Cleaning Imac memory and set up

I want to give my imac g4 flat screen to my son. How can I reset it/ clean it back down to put him as admin and basically start again?

No not really. The version on the disk is the version that is installed.
To avoid re-downloading updates in the future rather than using Apple's Software Update you can download the 10.2.8, 10.3.9 or 10.4.8 'combo' update this will take you from 10.2, 10.3 or 10.4 up to the latest version. You can burn this combo update to CD for re-application later without the need to download. Downloading the Combo will also allow you to update numerous Macs with a single download. The transition to Intel does complicate this somewhat as the Intel and PPC combos are different.
The retail version of Tiger I bought was 10.4.3; you may find yours is an older or newer version. Either way you have a 149Mb download to do.

  • How Can i clean my memory and make my imac more faster ?

I am new user in mac i have imac 4 g ram  and need a way to clean the memory and make my imac more faster ...

You can't "clean" RAM. If the "storage" space on your hard drive isn't enough then put in a larger hard drive or delete any of your data you no longer need or can store on an external drive. Beyond this I cannot say because you have not provided enough information such as the amount of installed RAM, Capacity of your hard drive and the amount of available space on the hard drive, the specific iMac model you have.
    You can try reinstalling Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
However, if your computer doesn't have enough RAM or your hard drive is full, then reinstalling won't help.

  • IMac, Airport, and setting up wireless blu-ray player

I'm trying to hook up an LG BD570 wireless network blu-ray player and was hoping to create the wireless network using Airport on my iMac. I used these instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh336.html
When I set up the network settings through the blu-ray, it recognizes my network, but it can't connect to it. Can I not use the iMac as a wireless router? The blu-ray is a couple rooms away from the computer, I don't know if that's too far.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

missuswayne, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes you can use your Mac that way. Unfortunately the Mac does not offer the flexibility nor robustness of a dedicated wireless router. Therefore if you have problems there is very little you can do to try to remedy them.
I suggest that you purchase an inexpensive wireless router instead of using your Mac.

  • I just purchased my I MAC, and set up my aol and gmail to the desktop icon.  After deleting some messages tonight, I tried to shut down from the menu and received the message "Shutdown canceled because mail application is still open"--icon not working.

I just purchased this IMac yesterday, and set up my two email accounts to the mail icon today.   This evening, after deleting some messages, I was not able to open the mail icon nor shutdown, restart, or log off the computer from the menu.  I keep receiving the message "shutdown canceled by mail application".  Really frustrating.

Press Alt, Command and Esc keys to open Force Quit. Then, on the window that will show up, choose Mail and close it. Finally, you will be able to turn off your iMac

  • Terminal Commands to clean Open Directory and Profile Manager

    Hi,
So I've made the fun decision to move to ML Server as we are just getting services up and we should be on the most recent software to start. I have had interment luck with Open Directory and Profile Manager and was looking for a way to wipe the data bases and start clean.
I have tried getting to the  ( usr/share/devicemgr/backend and running wipDB.sh. however the database doesnot exist.
It would be nice to clean the databases and setting instead of doing a full reinstall of MT Lion.
    Thanks!

Boot from your Mac OS X installer DVD.  After selecting a language, choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
When Disk Utility launches, use the "Zero Out Data" option under the Erase tab.  Erase the entire disk, not only the free space.
One pass of zeros is secure enough for normal use.  One pass will take a couple of hours, so plan some time.

  • I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Upgraded my iMac 2011's Memory and now it won't boot properly

    Hi,
So, today i upgraded the memory of my 27" 2011 edition iMac, the ram i used is two sticks of 1333mhz DDR3 4GB ram, to upgrade from the conventional 4GB to 12 GB as my iMac was struggling due to lack of memory when loading certain programmes. I installed the Ram fine and had no issues with that, I then booted my iMac up and the ram had registered fine, no problem. I then opened up google and this also worked fine but when i opened other programmes or at least, I tried to, the unit just crashed and restarted itself, well.. attempted to. Now, whenever I try to turn the unit on it gets to the apple and the loading bar, loads 3/4 of the way and then doesn't boot and restarts the process. I have tried to remove the RAM and just use the original but the problem still persists which i'm presuming is due to the iMac believing its running 12gb when I put the original 4GB back in as obviously that's what previously registered. I've seen one of these posts from a couple of years ago but it didn't get answered so if anyone has any thoughts as to how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
    Sam

Do you have a link to Amazon RAM?
Macs are very, VERY PICKY about the RAM specs they need.
Most common electronics retailers and wholesalers do not usually have the correct RAM and specs Mac computers need.
Here are the correct specs for RAM your 2011 Mac needs.
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Also, the timing latency has to be low...9ms or less.
Here is known good and compatible RAM from OWC (macsales.com)

Are you wanting to import iCal to the MacBook Air. Since iCloud doesn't work with 10.6 OSX you probably don't have any data in iCloud yet?

  • HT1423 How do I add more memory to my imac 5.1. Lion is requiring 2gb of memory and it only comes with 1 gb of memory

    I already have snow leopard.

Hello, Sadly you have to pull those & install bigger ones.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_2006
And go for at least the 3 or 4 GB kit, & that while satisfying the minimum, isn't really enough for 10.6.x

  • How do I add more memory to my Imac, I only have 1GB of memory and need 2GB to download Yosemite!

How do I add more memory to my Imac, I only have 1GB of memory and need 2GB to download Yosemite?

    Janet,
This is why the question rkaufmann87 asked about your model is so important:
[click chart to enlarge if needed]
The list covers the early iMacs with Intel processors that shipped with either OS 10.4 or 10.5 and have only two RAM slots. As you can see, some have limits to what version of OSX you can install. If the step rkaufmann requests does not narrow down your model, you can do one more thing.
While the "About this Mac" window is open, click the "More Info..." button at the bottom of that window to get this (assuming you are really running OS 10.5.8 as shown in your profile):
The code I've indicated with the red arrow corresponds to the codes in the second column on the chart. Post the code your computer reports--again don't post a serial number.
If your iMac shipped with only 1GB RAM, I fear it is one of the earliest models that cannot be upgraded all the way to Yosemite.

  • I bought my 20" iMac in Nov of 2007 and when I try to purchase the upgrade for lion I'm told I need 2GB of memory and I only have 1GB.  How can I get more?  I am currently running snow leopard

Trying to upgrade to Lion on my 20" iMac that I bought in Nov. 2007.  Currently I'm running on MAC OS X version 10.6.8.  When I tried to buy the upgrade I got a response that Lion requires 2 GB of memory and I only have 1 GB.  How can I get more memory and will my computer be compatible with Lion when I do get more memory?

Yes you can install more RAM. Up to 6 GBs. Two - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs. For the maximum use one 4 GB and one 2 GB. Otherwise install a pair of 2 GB modules for a total of 4 GBs.
You can purchase suitable RAM at DataMem or OWC. OWC also has video tutorials on installation.
