  • HP Pavillion model # p6654y System Recovery

I purchased a HP Pavillion model # p6654y about one year ago.  Recently, when my son was using the computer, the system became completely unresponsive. He uses gaming sites, so he may have caught a virus.  I don't know.   I ordered the recovery disks, followed directions, and the monitor just stays at "starting windows".   (I let it go overnight, just to make sure I was giving the disks enough time to work, but there was no change.)  Computer never gets to "system recovery" screen, just stays at "starting windows" .  Any suggestions?  The disks are new, clean and undamaged.  Thank you.

Hello NancyStLaurent, You might try using the hard drive for the HP Recovery Resore of your system instead of the HP Recovery Restore disk set.
If can attempt this by pressing the F-11 key when the HP Logo appears. If you manage to enter the HP Recovery Restore Utility, select the destructive procedure and the hard drive will be reformatted and wiped clean of all the software on the hard drive.
After this process completes, the system should reboot and start as it did when you first booted the system.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.

  • HP Pavillion Model #: 20-b086in PC moves at snails pace

    Model #: 20-b086in Product #: H3W32AA#ACJ Serial #: (Personal information removed) Software Build #: 12AP3AR8603#SACJ#DACJ Service ID #: 20130609 PCBRAND #: HP OS #: SL
I purchased this PC on 7th November 2014 from a dealer in Pune,India. The specs are Intel Pentium Processor CPU- G645, RAM 2GB, HDD- 500GB. OS- Windows 8.1
Quite apart from the challange of learning Windows all over again ( because it is a far cry from a seamless transision from all earlier versions of Windows) , my frustration majorly stems from the fact that this PC is slower even than a snail. I simply couldn't believe my eyes. My previous PC was also a HP Pavillion and even that was slow, despite having a 2GBRAM and a 500GB hard disk).
But the slowness displayed by THIS masterpiece of a PC takes the cake. I can't even shut it down without going through several steps of trials and errors....trying it first this way and then that way....till something works.
ALL programs and apps (  including the MS Office that I purchased along with this PC ) run slow on this PC.
It has nothing to do with the speed of my internet connection, by the way. Even MS Office runs abysmally slow on this PC.
I cleaned up all temp files and wiped all the blank spaces in the hard disk.  I removed as many programs and apps as realistically possible from the Start Menu. But to no avail. Even Google Chrome has become extra slow.

I went back to the dealer who shrugged and told me to get in touch with the HP service centre.
From past experience with my earlier HP PC I know that the servicing in INDIA is outsourced by HP to some small companies, including a company called Reddington who are notorious and infamous for their bad service.
I cannot get the PC checked by an outsider because that would effectively void the warranty...
    So what do I do?

  • Problem after cleaning keyboard on a T410

Hi, I just cleaned a T410 with a spray foam, as I always have done with the fluid proof thinkpad keyboard. But this the left button of the trackpoint mouse does not work anymore. Y removed the button and can see there is dust or dirty there. Also, when I apply compressed air I can see both transparent film separating from each other. There is nothing different from the right button that works fine. Does anyone what else can I try in order to fix this problem? Also, I would to understand why this had happened. Thanks Oliver

    Hello everyone,
One thing to remember is that the keyboard is not "fluid proof" it is "spill resistant" these are two very different distinctions and I would not use a foam cleaner to clean a Thinkpad unless its specifically recommended. Drying it out is the best option, I would prefer using a hairdryer on a low setting rather than making a thinkpad cake in the oven.  That's just my personal opinion though.
    Cheers,
    Ed.

  • Keyboard keys different between models?

I replaced the top case on a black Macbook 2.16 Core 2 Duo model, as the keyboard and trackpad were not being recognized and were not working. I had a white top case from a broken Macbook 2.0 Core 2 Duo which works okay. Finally a working keyboard and trackpad!
I gave this Macbook to my wife, who wants to use a non-English keyboard layout. I've swapped keys on lots of different Apple portables, so it's something I'm familiar with.
The problem, though, is that I've found that they keys on 3 different Macbook keyboards snap on in a different way than on the keyboard that is now installed on my wife's Macbook.
Specifically, there are 2 small hooks on the back of the keys that hook onto the scissor mechanism under the keys. On the 3 different Macbook keyboards, these 2 small hooks are on the LEFT side of the keys (as you look at the keyboard), whereas on the keyboard on my wife's Macbook, the 2 small hooks are at the TOP of the keys.
In order to install the keys on the keyboard, I have to place them SIDEWAYS. Which makes using the keyboard a bit strange, to say the least.
Any idea when Apple started changing how the keys are installed on the keyboards on Macbooks?

  • How to clean keyboard?

How can I lightly clean my keyboard. It only has grease on it from typing.

    LeaperBP wrote:
Well, the wipes seem like a good option because they're pre-moistened. There's a couple of threads in this forum where people thought their cloths weren't too damp, only to have their computers die soon after. So I'd rather be able to sue a manufacturer.
The difference between moist and dripping wet seems pretty simple to me, but for those who find this distinction too subtle, pre-moistened wipes are probably a good idea.

  • After cleaning keyboard, everything disappeared from desktop

After cleaning the keyboard, everything has disappeared from my desktop, including the hard drive disk image. I heard a "clunk" like the sound of something being sent to the Trash, but it's not there.
I know the files still exist, because when I open a finder window all the screen shots I had on the desktop are still listed under "Desktop". But they aren't visible on the desktop itself. But the hard drive disk image isn't anywhere to be seen, although it's also visible in a Finder window!
I've now moved all the files into a folder inside "Documents" (yes, I know they should have been there all along).

Sorry, everyone, I restarted and the hard drive is back on the desktop.

  • Greek letters instead of English after cleaning keyboard

After cleaning my keyboard, I can only type with Greek-looking letters. I have no idea what I did. Can anyone help me get the English letters back?

    Two suggestions:
    1. Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Language & Text . Select "Language". Make sure English is set as the first language in the list of available languages.
    2. You may have caused the Option, Command, or Control key to become stuck. First, if you have another keyboard available, see if you can repeat your problem with it. If the problem goes away, you know the first keyboard is responsible. Second, if you have a non-Aluminum keyboard (i.e. white or beige plastic) you can try gently prying up each of the keys mentioned above and seeing if there is anything causing the keys to malfunction.

  • Cleaned keyboard of my imac and now it doesn't work

My keyboard had gotten pretty dirty over the years. After doing some research, I read that you can pull of the keys, clean them and then put them back on which is what I did. They were working while I was putting them on because I was playing music on itunes and when I hit the arrow button, the music would skip tracks. Also, I saw the "CAPS LOCK" key light up when I placed the button back on.
But after I completed replacing the cleaned buttons and tried typing, it doesn't work. I rebooted and it still doesn't work.
The mouse is plugged via the keyboard and that does work.
Is it broken now? I thought it was safe to clean with this method. I basically just took cleaning wipes and qtips to clean inside the keyboard and the actual buttons.
    Any help is appreciated.

I have no Idea where you found out about pulling off keys. My "Everything Mac" booklet says nothing about cleaning the keyboard. I would have called Apple first before doing any keyboard cleaning. You may have to get a new keyboard.

  • Part found while cleaning keyboard. What could it be?

Cleaning my keyboard, I removed it as usual to check for dust and when I put it back there was a bulge at the top center. Removing it again, I found a tiny circular part ca. 3mm in diameter loose underneath. Looks like a hearing-aid battery but probably isn't. What is this and do I have to worry about it being loose? I checked all around the area and can't for the life of me see where it belongs. Thanks for advice!

    Hi again,
Ah yes I see what you mean, I re-read my post, sorry.
What I ment was when you lit the keyboard look at the top part of the laptop case where the keyboard came from not the the underside of the keyboard, you should then see in the top middle a little hole to replace the magnet.
hope this is clearer for you ?

  • Best way to clean keyboard

Hello, I was wondering what the best way to clean the keyboard on my black book is. Thanks for the help.

The absolute best and least harmful method, is going to be a soft cloth lightly dampened with plain ordinary water.
That will be quite sufficient for almost everything. And, it is not going to hurt the computer.
Make sure the computer is off.
And, make sure that the cloth is only slightly damp. You don't want to drip any water inside the computer. So, wring that cloth out good.
As for removing dust under the keys, you could hold the computer upside down, and blow the dust out with a can of compressed air.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to clean Keyboard for  iMac G4

Have an old iMac (dome shape) G4 and white keyboard. Right now, I have some dirt lodged below the keys inside the keyboard.
Question: can I clean this up? take apart the keyboard?

    Hi Joseph,
Apparently dismantling these keyboards is not for the fainthearted. If you're feeling brave have a look at: these instructions.
We have had some success cleaning our Apple Pro keyboard by disconnecting it (obviously!) and just gently tapping it around upsidedown, blowing into it, and using the vacuum cleaner crevice tool.
You have inadvertently posted your query in the iBook forum. You might get more constructive advice over in the iMac Flat Panel Forum. Not that you're not welcome here, you understand…

  • Portege R700 - how to clean keyboard keys?

    Hi
I have a Toshiba Portege R700 - and I have spilt some coke onto a small section of the keyboard.
Unsurprisingly, two or three keys are now "sticky".
Is this as simple as getting access to the keyboard and cleaning the relevant keys?
Or is it not as simple as that?
If I can do this, is there a pictorial guide on how to access the keyboard?
I am loathe to open it without a look at the tech manual first.
    Thanks

    Hello
In my opinion you will not be able to clean it properly. Coke is full of sugar. It can be complicated but you can try it.
In worst case you must exchange he keyboard.
So what you must do is to remove key cap for each critical button. It is fixed with small plastic holders. Just take something like credit card but more stabile, put under the key cap and try to remove it. Under the key cap is small key mechanism. Try to clean it up with wet cloth. Be very careful and clean it without much pressure.
When you think it is OK place the key cap in the place and press it down, very gently of course.
You will hear click noise and the key cp should be in place again.
I hope you will be able to get it work again.
    Please post some feedback.

  • Cleaning keyboard Satellite A50

I spilled a drop of lemonade onto my cursor keys, and now the down and right arrow key-contacts are stuck. This causes some of the other keys to malfunction too. When I press 'em I hear a soft "beep", which indicates something like "busy, no more keystrokes possible". So I need to clean those contacts.
How can I safely remove the keyboard to clean it?

    Hi Vincento,
Rather than remove your keyboard I would suggest that you remove the keytops from the stuck keys (carefully, they are easy to break), and then spray a very small amount of electrical contact cleaner on them. You can then manipulate the key mechanism to try to free the stuck contacts. Once they are free replace the key-tops.
Do not power on your notebook until the contact cleaner has fully evaporated.
