Apparently my FF is slow as a bastard child because of my cache. However, I have loads of user/passwords saved and DO NOT wish to seem them go buh-bye.

I know how to remove addons, but 'Open with Photoshop' is not removing itself:
I installed version 1.2 of 'Open with Photoshop', then i updated firefox, but the addon didn't work. There have been many updates for both firefox and 'Open with Photoshop' since then, but I can't upgrade or remove the addon to install the latest version and use it. how should i do this?
I have ended up with version 1.2 that wont remove, and version 2.2 floating between the list of installed and uninst6alled addons in the addons manager. Help please?!!!
It won't uninstall on nightly 13 (04/03/12) and firefox 10.0.2

  • Is there a way to clean the javascript cache of files in layouts folder?

Is there a way to clean the javascript cache of files in layouts folder?
If I deploy a new version of the solution after some changes in javascript file which is deployed to the layouts folder the old version is used. The only fix I have found so far is to change the URL of the javascript file with some fake querystring like
"?v=2". But this requires another deployment. So I am asking for an alternative approach.

    hi Nikolay,
there is no clean solution for your problem. Browsers cache files by url, you can avoid caching appending in query string unique value per deployment. For example
_layouts/my_js_file.js?v=<current date> - will be refreshed from cache when day changes
_layouts/my_js_file.js?v=<GUID> - if guid is generated on every request, this file should never cache
_layouts/my_js_file.js?v=<product version> - more preferable solution, browser will update cache on every new version that was deployed
Actually, ScriptLink should take care about this, internally it has a method that appends unique id into query string based on js file content, if content changed, hash is also changed and new unique id is generated.

  • How can I remove any addons after I have uninstalled Firefox?

A few months age Firefox decided it did not want to play any more after an update. It had something to do with the addons, I submitted a comprehensive error report at the time and didn't hear of any fixes since then. I removed Firefox with revo-uninstaller and reinstalled it at least 3 times since and still got the same error message.
So what I want to do now is remove any addons and remnants from Firefox. How should I go about this? I was going to just go through Program Files and delete anything that remotely looked like an addon folder and then I was going to go and butcher the registry. But I think that might be a bad idea.
So "How should I go about this" in the most effective and safe way?
Cheers in advance for any help.

If you want to completely remove Firefox, including user profile data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, installed extensions, etc.) you can follow the directions here:
This may not remove add-ons that have been globally installed, such as extensions or plugins that are located outside of the Firefox program or profile folder. It would help if you let us know what add-on you are trying to remove.

  • Cache Removing Help and Programs etc

I have a month old iMac and it's also my first Mac:)
I was told that Macs don't need as much maintaince as a Windows PC, but I guess there is some maintiance that I need to do.
I've heard there are a few programs to help clean cache and cookies etc.
The programs I know of are MainMenu and OnyX. I think MainMenu looks pretty good for my needs. http://www.santasw.com/
1: Is removing all the cache files safe to do and how often? I've looked in my cache folder and it has a loot of sub folders and files.
2: Also are there two cache folders on the iMac?
3: The other options in MainMenu: which one's should I use? like weekly/monthly
I don't want to get into the position where I have removed important files via MainMenu (if this happens) So is there a manual way of removing cache files? if so please give me step-by-step-guide
4: What does 'Repairing disk Premissions' actually do?
Sorry about all the questions:P Any help is appreciated
    thanks

    1. Removing cache files is a troubleshooting procedure, not a maintenance chore. It is safe because if a cache is deleted the operating system or program that created it will simply re-create it.
    2. There are multiple cache files and folders on the Mac.
    3. Read the program's documentation or Help.
    4. All files have certain privileges associated with them that determine whether a user can read, write, delete, or execute a file or folder. In other words they determine access. In some cases badly designed program installers or a software error may alter the permissions on specific system files. Sometimes the effect of this is innocuous, but in other cases it could render a file unusable thus causing a system error. Repairing permissions fixes the permissions that have been altered. Repairing permissions has no impact on files or folders in the user's account. It only affects specific system files and folders. However, some third-party software may install the means by which repairing permissions will also check and repair permissions for that software.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • How can I clean a mailbox and remove all but the latest message in thread, and more...

I am using Thunderbird version 24.6.0, for years I have been saving every email into a mailbox folder of a technical email alias I subscribe to.
The folder now has over 12,000 emails and I am exceeding 700 MB. Is there an Addon or tool of any kind that allows me to automatically in one fell swoop delete all but the last message in a thread assuming all prior messages included all prior messages in thread, BUT here's the hitch, if someone responded out of order to a thread or did not include prior messages, their message should be saved since it will not appear in the prior string of messages.
I can draw it out better than explain it, I want to save all responses to a thread, except those that are captured by the final message in a thread, or....

I have no idea on how, but your file needs to exceed 4Gb before there will be any kind of issue (and the guys think they have removed that limit not anyway)
Thunderbird will not move slowly or anything with lots of messages.

  • Permissions on Android AT200 removable SD card set to read only

Recently the removale SD card on my at200 has been set to read only for all but a few applications. This mean that when editing or trying to save, copy docs on the SD card I get the "not enough permissions" message. Any editing by these applications requires shifting files to onboard SD card and back again.
Toshiba file manager is able to rw OK, but my other file manager fails, as does ezy PDF.
Reading the attributes of the SD card show that it is set to rw for data.p (permissions XML). But looking at info from file manager shows sdcard directories and files set to dr- or -r-.
Is there some way of getting this changed to allow access for all my installed apps? Or even some?
    Cheers
    rabel

    MisterX,
Found this note from zc2 on the xda forum dealing with the same issue December 2011.
"The owners of Honeycomb-powered tablets experience a problem writing to the external SD card, because since v3.2 the permissions for the files there were changed from sdcard_rw to media_rw.
According the file /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml, any application with declared permission "android.permission.WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE" should be included to that media_rw group.
    But that won't happen.
I made a test application to show the group membership (it just executes the "id" command), and according to its output, the application is not member of the media_rw group, despite the "android.permission.WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE" permission is mentioned in its manifest.xml"
This is somewhat confirmed by a comment returned to me from the AntTek File Explorer developers on an interum work around for this problem (a common one since 3.2)
"While waiting, the simple solution, if your device is rooted, is as follows:
    1. Using AntTek File Explorer, active Native mode from application preference.
    2. Navigate to /system/etc/permissions.
    3. Open platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
    4. Add an additional group definition for this permission: <group gid="media_rw" />. It will grant AntTek Explorer (and other applications) permission to writing to removable SD Card. After edited, it will look like:
    <permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE">
    <group gid="sdcard_rw" />
    <group gid="media_rw" />
    </permission>
    5. Save the changes to the file.
    6. Restart your tablet."
My tablet is not rooted so this was not available to me, but it appears this is a major issue for Honeycomb, including the version on the AT200. Is there any plans to fix this bug do you think? Or is there a date for the promised update to ICS for the AT200, another prime selling point.
    Cheers

  • Application cache removed with Clear Data

I'm developping a tool on ipad which I want to run with application cache only according Safari's "Storing Data on the Client".
and: "Safari Client-Side Storage and Offline Applications Programming Guide"
But I observed that the app cache is deleted with " Clear Cookie and Data" in the "Settings".
That's not what I expected from the app cache but from "normal" caching only.
What sense does it make if the app cache is removed the same way?
Is there someone who has other experience with app cache and Clear Data ?
    Thanks

O, I'm sorry, I thought this was the forum for questions like that one.
Still I'm not an enrolled apple developer. So I think I cant' ask their forum.
Forums there are closed like a castle at midnight.
But the problem does not belong to iOS.
It's simply HTML + javascript performed by Safari. Runs on any other modern browser too.
Hm, frustrating. I have an ipad, use Safari and cannot ask the Safari folk this question.
    Thanks

There are some addons/extensions which are not compatible with my current version of mozilla. I am seeing the "type error: components.classes[cid]" evry time while starting the firefox. So, i want to remove those incompatible addons. Those are google gears 0.5.36.0,speed boat video downloader2.2.9,widgi toolbar flatform4.4,you tube downloader toolbar 4.4. I went to tools>options>manage addons. But i cant see remove option for above mentioned addons, only disable option i am seeing. What should i do then?

Those extensions were probably installed like plug-ins and since you see them as extensions you will probably have to uninstall each of them through the Control Panel, see directions for various systems in

  • How about a script to clean up /var/cache/pacman/pkg

/var/cache/pacman/pkg can get filled up with packages that you intalled once, just to try out, but then uninstalled and never plan to install again. I am thinking of a script that removes pkg.tar.gz's that are not installed, which will clear up some truly "dead" space on your hard drive. What do you think?

    thank you.
Sometimes a package will cause trouble, which is easily escaped by downgrading.  If you have trouble that brakes your internet connection it is so easy to fix by referring to your /var/log/pacman.log (if you have to) & downgrading, using the following method from the Arch Wiki:
You may be able to downgrade the package trivially by visiting /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ on your system and seeing if the older version of the package is stored there. (If you haven't run pacman -Scc recently, it should be there). If the package is there, you can install that version using pacman -U pkgname-olderpkgver.pkg.tar.gz. If pacman complains about file conflicts, you could force it to do the installation anyway with pacman -Uf pkgname-olderpkgver.pkg.tar.gz.
