Cleaning my mac book.

When browsing I am getting windows coming up I have not searched for including mac keeper and thesmartsearch.net. How do I clean it up?
My Imac is fine at work just at home. My daughter and wife have been using it but think it might just be no real firewall.
Can anyone suggest the best way to get rid of the rubbish?
Cheers Kevin

  • I want to clean my mac book pro 15inch 2008! what should i do?

i want to clean my mac book pro 15inch 2008((inside)) ! what should i do?

You can get a small screwdriver and take off the bottom case and see if any dust has accumulated in the fans.  But Apple provides no official directions on how to clean the inside of a mac, so I would leave it as is.

  • Cleaning up mac book air for sale

Having upgraded to a new Mac Book Air, I'm preparing to sell my old one.  There are various places that advertise selling used Macs.  Some of them are advertised by Mac Life Magazine.  I'm going to check out these places.
But next comes the question, how do I prepare it to turn over to the buyer?  The only mass storage going with it is the SSD that is built in.
One approach that seems obvious to me is to wipe off all my files.  By this I mean deleting everything under my Home directory and all the applications not part of OS X.  Disk Util has a feature to erase free space.  So if I delete the personal files and the applications I bought and then empty the trash, all the sectors which might contain the files in question should be in the free space.  Disk Utils erase free space should do a good job of cleaning up the remnants.
Any comments or suggestions about this.  Doing this instead of using a Secure Empty trash means that the remnants of files I deleted months ago are also cleaned out.
Now what else do I need to clean out?
How can I clean out securely things on my Keychain?
How do I get the system to forget my Apple ID?  That is no one else's business.  Obviously it needs a password but not letting them have the ID is one more step to being secure.
What else is on my system such as user related settings that are not stored in the home directory but in some system directory that I need to consider.
I guess I'm being a bit paranoid but there are people out there who do remarkable and scary data recovery stuff.
    Thanks for your help.

  • What is the best hard drive cleaner for mac book pro

I am wanting to clean up my hard drive , any suggestions as to what is the best product for this . I read reviews about ccleaner , which is in the app store but there was some really scary stories ... any suggestions .Thanks

AppStore software has restrictions on what it can do.
If you don't like CCleaner for OS X downloaded from their site (not AppStore), then OnyX for OS X at MacUpdate.com has been a long time favorite to clean the caches, log files and what not for privacy and troubleshooting corrupted caches. Followed by a reboot.
Then a Disk Utility > Erase Free Space with Zero is recommended afterwards to scrub deleted files off the hard drive if that level of privacy cleaning is necessary as deleted files remain on hard drives until overwritten.
If your having performance problems with your computer then look at this for solutions

  • Cleaning my mac book to make it run like brand new.

Want to restore macbook late 2008 to factory settings but cannot find discs. I just want the feel of a brand new macbook, but keep the other apps that I have purchased. How can I do it without restoring to factory settings.

Thank you..I called Apple Support and they were gracious enough to resend me the original disc. Problem now is it needs to be brought back to original state, which is leopard, then snow leopard, then lion....  Oh well, 1 disc down...I just need to find the other ones. Thanks again!

how to clean a mac book pro for sale

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps listed in this support article, take these steps:
    1. Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
    2. Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
    3. If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
    4. If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
    5. If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
    6. If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
    7. If the machine has an internal hard drive, erase the one remaining data partition with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by starting up in Internet Recovery mode (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer to the buyer.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either. The buyer will have to purchase them.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • Crooked Mac book pro Key on keyboard

    Hey guys,
Just today when i was cleaning my Mac book Pro i noticed that 2 of the ks on the keyboard were out of alignment, its not a problem because its working fine but i dont want it to come out in the future or something just to be on the safe side does any one know how to fix it? It would be nice if you guys could give some how to's before going to the Bestbuy store or Apple store.

Sounds like you need a Mac Chiropractor...the keys are designed to snap into place--it can be fixed in a matter of seconds. Having said that, if you don't know how to do it, then bring it to Apple. I second the opinion of Best Buy's Geek Squad. You may find a winner, but you may not. At Apple, they are all competent.

  • My Mac Book Pro changes the saved home page each time I start Safari.  I also get new tabs that randomly open asking to clean up my Apple

My Mac Book Pro changes the saved home page each time I open Safari.  I am also getting random tabs opening with various "cleaning up" my computer junk.
How do I get rid of this?  I tried some of the fixes listed but they don't seem to work or I am doing something wrong.
    THanks

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • How to clean the surface of my mac book pro?

Howdy. I have a retina mac book pro (I think model doesn't matter).  My question is how to clean the surface when it gets dirty. Like to use what kind of cloth and maybe some special cleaners and etc. Someone if you are experienced could you please answer me?
    Thanks in advance!

Special MicroFiberTM cloth gently polishes your display without scratching it.
Contains a special polymer to protect your display, while reducing static electricity that attracts dust.
Liquid gel will not drip into delicate electronics.
Alcohol-free, ammonia-free formula removes dust, dirt, and fingerprints without damaging your display’s protective coating.

  • I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and somehow it crashes the mac side peridoically.  I am told I need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the recovery drive.  will that delete the windows partition too??

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto.  I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system.  My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too.  If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

Buy an external USB hard drive and copy your data to it.  Either that or burn them all to single or double layer DVDs (depending on amount of data you have).  Or if it's really a small amount, consider putting it all on a USB memory stick.
