Cleaning of MacBook

What is the best way to clean your Macbook? My keys have gotten dirty, as well as my screen, but I don't want to use any products that could be harmful for the system.
Thank you.

I use iKlear. It comes with 2 microfiber clothes, and does not hurt your screen. You can use it on glossy or matte displays, and will also clean the keyboard and mouse. Another option, is to use a magic eraser on the keyboard.

  • How to "clean" my Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I'm interested in completely cleaning my Macbook Pro. I've no idea where to start so let me begin by detailing what's going on:
Some specs on the machine fist:
Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk Macintosh HD.
    1) Im getting pop-ups like crazy. Every time I click a new pop-up annoyingly clutters my screen. I've gone to safari>preferences> extensions and removed all plug-ins, but still they persist. And yes, the "block pop ups" box is checked as well.
    2) My machine is running slowly. I see the "rainbow wheel of death" much too often. Does this just happen when Macs get old? (Bought in 2010)
    3) I want to purge my machine of all old junk that may be cloggin' 'er pipes. Basically, I want to get rid of everything I don't need. Old files: gone. Old, unused programs: gone. That thing I don't know the function of, but sits uselessly in the recondite depths of my memory: GONE.
    4) Is there anyway to get my computer running "optimally". Certainly the current state is not even close to good. It's miserably slow.
Can anyone help me out? I imagine there are probably specific fixes for each of these issues, but is there a program out there (or combination of free ones) that will do more than one thing? Would Mac Keeper do these things? What's your advice?

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.
When you fix the above problem backup your data, erase your computer, reinstall OS X:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • What is the best way to clean my Macbook Pro screen?

Everytime I have had my Mac in at Vertical IT in St Kilda they clean my screen and my machine which is a brilliant service but I always forget to ask them what they use to do it? I have heard windex may do the trick but doesn't it have chemicals in it that could damage the screen? Thanks!

    Cleaning Your MacBook Display
Follow these general rules when cleaning the screen.
Shut down your MacBook, detach the power adapter, and remove the battery.
Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth or paper with water only and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.

  • Using Sears Optical Lens Cleaner to clean my MacBook's screen

Is it alright to be using Sears Optical Lens Cleaner to clean my MacBook's screen? I spray it on a micro-fiber cloth first, of course.

Hi jsnlvy, welcome to macbook forum.
well,.. apple recommend to use slightly water damped micro fiber soft cloth to clean the screen.
I sometimes sprayed lightly water based glass cleaner to that dampen fabric to get rid of stubborn smudge, and after that I use dry cotton ball in circular stroke motion to get rid the streak mark.
I am afraid that the Optical lens solvent is to strong for your screen and might damage your screen. But if you want to try it, dampen the cloth with water first as I did and applied at a small area and check it is safe.
    Good Luck.

  • I spray cleaned my macbook air wig

i spray cleaned by macbook air with a hoyshold cleanjng liquid, and looks like i damaged the display. i have a broad vertical band of lines running through the middle of the screen
also, the machine connects to the net, but safari does not log on to google, and outlook hangs as well as crashes the system
i am reaslnably certain i wont be covered under warranty (my mac's only a month old), and hence tge anxiety to estimate the dxtent and cost of damage
any guess on the extent of damage and the cost i'll have to bear?

I would never spray and sort of house hold cleaning product on any computer screen let alone a MBA.
Looking at cost of around $200 to buy a monitor then charges on top to fit it, or just take it into Apple and get them to tell you how much it would cost to replace... i would say in the region of around $400-500 i could be wrong!

What is the best way to clean my Macbook Pro anti glare screen

I have used WINDEX ELECTRONICS for about the past 6+ months:
    http://www.windex.com/en-US/Products/Pages/electronic-cleaner-and-wipes.aspx
I apply it with a small damp microfiber cloth and wipe the excess off with a large microfiber cloth.  The display looks the same when it came out of the box.
THIS IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ORDINARY WINDEX GLASS CLEANER.
    Ciao.

  • Why do my mouse and my trackpad not react after a few minutes? I always have to reboot after a few minutes. And I just cleaned the Macbook, so just a fresh Mountain Lion is on the computer.

I had problem with my Macbook (End 2008). It grabbed everything, when I was moving over it with the mouse. And left stuff somewhere else.
So I decided to clean the MacBook and I just put a new system on it, after a new Mountain Lion. Nothing else.
Now the external mouse and the trackpad work after a restart.
But after minutes the trackpad is still moving the mouse over the screen, but I can´t click anything.
    Not even with my mouse.
    What is wrong?

Try going to Starbucks and connect thru their WiFi and see if you experience same issue. If not, it may be your wireless router not compatible to wireless-N built in the macbook pro. It could be your router cycling on and off its connection without even noticing it.  Do you have any other wifi at home that doesn't experience this issue?
You need to do process of elimination. Keep us posted. Thanks!

Drink the Irish, and as for the cleaning Vodka, buy the absolute cheapest one in the store, the one you wouldn't want to drink.
They all meet FDA standards for human consumption unlike alcohol in the drug store.

  • How often physically clean my macbook pro?

How often physically clean my macbook?.

When cleaning the keyboard and trackpad, be VERY CAREFUL not to get any fluid under the keys or around the edge of the trackpad. It will be impossible to remove and over time can lead to serious corrosion issues, like those in these photos (double-click on the image for an up-close-and-gory look at the damage): https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3875300
Alternately, you can try and keep dirt away from the Mac by using protective shells and keyboard covers. I use a hard transparent shell from Speck that has saved the aluminum on the lid from several nasty scratches already. Some people prefer their black matte shells, which feature a grippy non-slip rubberized finish.

  • What application to use to clean a macbook pro? I heard that some will give you viruses?

I am trying to clean my MacBook Pro since I only have 114.6 GB left in HD. I tried installing that robo icon that cleans your mac but was told it could give me viruses. I am super confused. Can someone help me just clean it without giving me the run around?? Thank you

"Only" 114 GB left? That is plenty.
Whatever you do, do not download or install any product claiming to magically "clean up" or "speed up" or "optimize" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite. If you already did, you found the problem. Fix it.
If you installed MacKeeper, get rid of it now. It is junk that will cause only misery. Follow the instructions to delete it with care.
Do not install such junk on a Mac. OS X already includes all the utilities it needs for you to delete unnecessary files.
General Mac maintenance: Tips to keep your Mac in top form
That is all the maintenance a Mac requires. Really.
If you have been accustomed to using Windows, this will come as a shock to you. Get over it.
