Cleaning off the HD before resale

Cleaning off the HD before resale - How do I do it properly?

Best way is to use the start up disc/k and disk utils in the install menu and zero drive once or more.
The more times it zero's the drive the harder it will be to reciver data. Once is good enough most of the time but 3 is very effective.
Remeber this will likely take 0 - 8 hours depending on how you go.

  • I synced to move all to a new computer but after I moved successfully, when I cleaned off the old one and forgot to undo sync it cleaned off my new one.

I successfully moved my info, favorites etc., to a new laptop with the sync feature, but when I cleaned off all my info from my old internet computer and forgot to undo the sync, it then synced and cleaned off my new one. Help! Can I get my favorites and other stuff back???

I can very well empathize and it hard for me to say it, but you can not get anything back - because there's nothing left anymore, at least not on Mozilla servers.

  • Everytime I get online I have to manually go to tools and turn off the proxy before I can load any webpages. Is there anyway I can keep it off permanetly?

  • How do I clean off mac mini for resale

I recently bought an iMac and am going to sell my Mac mini. The only thing on there are my pics and iTunes. Is there anything special I need to do when it comes to deleting those items before getting rid of the computer?
    thanks.

You can actually just shut down your system safely when you get to that point. Hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds and the system will power down/shut off.
When the new owner boots the machine it'll proceed directly to the system setup as if the machine was turned on for the first time. Presuming you performed an erase and install.
We all at some point upgrade from our present Macs to newer state of the art Macs. For example upgrading from a 17" PowerBook G4 to a 17" MacBook Pro.
Macs have a high resale value and people are always looking for a second system, a system for their children, or looking for a bargain. Remember to include the restore disks, user manuals, accessories, etc., that came with your system when you first bought it.
One of the things that make a Mac special is the high resale value. It is also how many new users, "switchers" experience their first Mac. 9 out of 10 those buyers will purchase a new Mac down the road obviously because of the Mac itself but also because of their buying experience.
They always remember their first Mac and their actual buying experience, so make it as if you were buying the system. What would you consider when buying from a complete stranger and what would you want and how would you want to be treated?
    Good Luck!

  • What can I clean off the drive?

I'm doing some hard drive cleanup. I found sequnces of files of the form:
    applemobiledevicesupport #.#.#.#
    itunes #.#.#.#
    quicktime #.#.#.#
Can I safely delete the early versions of these files leaving the most current?
    Thanks

What do you mean "about covers"?  The apple article says you should use a lint free cloth that is damp with water.  It says never apply the water directly to the device apply it to the cloth first.
I use monster screen clean to clean all my electronics.  I use it on the cases of my electronics, the keyboards, trackpads, screens, body, etc.  Works well, never damaged my devices.

  • Have iphone want to clean up the infor before downloading to new iphone?

I have synced my iphone and would now llike to access my contacts and photos to delete or move to another location. trying to get ready for a new iphone but want to clean everything up first. I have so many duplicates from the priior syncs. Can I do this on my itunes desktop or must I do it from my iphone?

You are syncing contacts with which supported address book application on your computer?
You can access your contacts there - where your contacts should be with or without an iPhone or any cell phone which can be lost or stolen.
Photos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. The app I use for importing photos/videos from the Camera Roll includes an option to delete the photos/videos from the Camera Roll after the import process is complete as when importing photos from any other digital camera.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process should remain on your computer.

  • Knuckleheads at apple turn off the download before more people brick iphone

To Apple.. If you try to check for updates via the menu, it still downloads the update just fine.. and then of course, bricks our phones.. Maybe you knuckleheads should take this off, so your problem doesn't get worse.. And for those that are about to tell me that apple doesnt read the forums.. yes they do.. they just don't respond...

This is what is killing me! The fact that they continue to ignore this major problem! People are getting up or home from work or whatever, and seeing they can update their iPhone software (totally un-aware of the problems)and ending up with a dead phone!
This update should have been pulled hours ago until they sorted out the server issues!
This is an incredible joke. And Apple just ignore it!

  • Msi 790gx-g65 wont post after shtting off the night before

Tried turning it on this morning only to find out it wont post. Symptoms are....
    1. Everything powers on, Fans. and all. but you cannot shut it off while holding the powerswitch in 4sec's.
    only by unplugging the powersupply
    2. All phase lights come on except for the #2 from the left #X###.
Only thing I can think of is it could either be the CPU of motherboard. I have already ruled out PSU Video And Memory since I took out the memory and didn't get any error codes at all, I have already done the out of the case test and reseated the CPU along with only using one stick of memory with the same exact results. this CPU worked alright but seemed to be a little on the hot side since I got it. could this be a dead CPU? HM.. I Don't know? you're opinions are greatly appreciated..thank you.

You used too much compound....only a tiny drop is enough....in fact so much that you hardly see it...
It has to be that little, as without it could function better, no joke.
Only about a grain of rice give or take. Im buying a new motherboard. since the onboard video will not even work, I am confident that its the board. I have always bought MSI Motherboards but all were intel untill now. Seems that i may have gotten a faulty board. Its also been more than 30 days and I would have to send it back to msi and I doubt they would even take it back since I have put afterarket cooler on it. I'm sure they would blame me for it going bad. From the first day I seen high temps on this board, its not MSI's fault either.Thats just how things go. Maybe ill have more luck with the next board.

  • Will it damage my Deskjet 4500n if I turn off the power before shut down?

    please see subject above
    [text removed for privacy]

    HI,
If you are referring to just diconnecting the power supply, or using a button on the powersocket, then yes. If you will do this as normal shutdown routine it will most likely damage the printer. Its ok to do it like that a few times, for troubleshooting reasons, but it should not be done all the time.

  • Is it bad for my battery if I take it off the charger before it's fully charged?

    Can I do this?

You can charge it as much or as little as you like, as often or as rarely as you like.
Apple simply recommends allowing it to discharge once permonteh followed by a complete charge.

  • Cleaning a schmotz off the iBook screen... and HD and Optical drivequestion

FIRST: I was hoping to find this info in a FAQ somewhere, but couldn't come up with it. I have an iBook G4 (14-inch Late 2004)/1.33GHz/768 MB RAM/ATA 40GB HD/Slot-loading combo -- NOT Super -- drive) that I bought second-hand from some leased-computer salvage yard. The price was right and it works fine, but in its former apparently corporate life, it looks like somebody blew their nose on the screen, then made a half-hearted attempt to wipe it off with a dirty sock. There's a schmotz almost dead center in the screen (that you can really see when the Book is on) as a maybe 1 mm gray smudge, and when the Book is off, you can see a larger, streaked area where someone apparently tried to clean off the original blemish, whatever it is. Could someone suggest the safest, least screen-threatening method of cleaning this muck off the display?
SECOND: I have a couple Aluminum (I think, though the ports arranged at the rear -- not the sides -- make them look like TiBooks) 15" PBG4s. One has a 40GB, and the other has a 60GB 4200-rpm Ultra ATA/66 HD (though I thought the bigger one was 80GB or 100GB -- is this possible?). Both PBG4s are in full working order, except their displays are dead (one from me dropping one of the 'Books on a tile floor from a height of about 4 feet, the other from the dreaded display-cable-through-the-left-hinge-flex-and-finally-break syndrome. Since the HDs in the PBG4 are Ultra ATA/66/4200 rpm, and the iBook G4 HD is a 40GB ATA/100 4200 rpm, is it possible to swap one of the PBG4 Ultra ATA HDs for the plain old ATA HD in the iBook G4?
THIRD: Is it possible, or even worthwhile, to replace the iBook G4's Combo Drive for one of the PBG4 SuperDrives?
    Thanks for your help!
    Bart Brown

    Bart:
The HDDs from the PBs should work fine if they are still functional. Any 2.5" ATA/IDE drive should work.
In terms of the smudge, try a damp lint-free cloth. You may need repeated applications. Wipe in circular motions. You can probably try a mild soap like ivory, but wipe it off with a damp cloth immediately. Soaps other than ivory may have caustic substances that can hurt the display.
In terms of swapping the optical drive for a SuperDrive it may work, although I am not sure if they both need to be the same make. Try it and let us know.

  • Format and clean off Hard Drive

    Hi,
I want to totally clean off my HD on my G3, dual USB ibook. I want to format it (or whatever), so that anything that may be on there is gone. Once I do this, I want to re-load Tiger back on. Will everything work again or are there drivers, like with windows that I'll have to reload again?
    My main question is:
How do I format and totally clean off the internal HD and how do I reload Tiger and make it a bare bones computer again? What is the best way of doing this and do I need other software to do this?

The only sure way to know that your data is unrecoverable is to remove the hard disk and destroy it.
Here is the link to Apple's Knowledge Base article on zeroing the hard drive using Tiger's Disk Utility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1011.html
This should be good enough security for you unless you plan on turning it over to computer specialists who know how to do data recovery.
If you want to have the applications that came with the iBook back on it, you will need to use the Restore CDs that came with it before installing Tiger. Choose the appropriate link to the method of restoring you need from this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802
Once you have the iBook restored to its like-new condition, you can upgrade to Tiger and you will have all the original applications, too.
    Good luck!
