Cleaning Trash Bin

I recently cleaned out a back up HD and I am trying to clear my trash bin. I was wondering if anyone knew how to delete files with this name "com.apple.SystenLoginItems.plist"

What error message are you getting when you attempt to delete then from Trash?

  • My Aperture trash always says I have 494 versions there?  How do I get a clean trash bin???

Everytime I go to empty the bin it says there are 494 versions being deleted and this cannot be undone.  I empty the trash... It should be zero but...I  throw one other version away... it says I still have 494 version plus one or two....  when the trash is visibly empty it says there is still.. 494 there??
How do I get this fixed and am I losing files if I empty this??

  • How to delete time machine backups from trash bin

    Hello,
I've got a little issue with time machine and doing something stupid on my part. I have seen different posts on this question, but it appears that most people haven't found a working solution, so I want to see if anybody has more insight.
A few weeks back I found that there were some files and folders that were getting backed up to time machine that I didn't want getting backed up for various reasons. Rather than wisely removing the individual folder and files like I've since learned, I removed the whole backup for that date to the trash bin. I know, bad choice.
I've tried to empty trash bin and delete the backups altogether, but error codes and permissions keep me from doing that. Space isn't an issue on the external drive I use for Time Machine, so I'd be fine with just getting the files OUT of trash and back into the folder with other backup dates-now that I know how to delete individual files. When I try and drag them back to TM folder from trash, get another error message saying something along the lines of the "drive not being able to be modified".
I've heard of some people using Terminal to remove files, while other folks say that that's dangerous and asking for bigger problems in the OS. So, what are my BEST options? Just want to get locked files out of the trash bin, don't care where they go at this point. I've tried the secure trash delete option and some other simple suggestions with no luck. Backups still sitting in trash.

    Hi DonnaR,
What's not good is to remove them via the Finder or any way other than within Time Machine
Unfortunately this is what I did, and I know better now, but I can't undo what foolish thing I did. I have tried the steps to a T that you included in earlier post from this page- http://pondini.org/TM/E6.html using the Terminal method. The files are still sitting in trash, no change. I have also done the "secure trash" thing holding down option key and that hasn't worked either. I have also done repeated REPAIR DISK operations of the external drive within Disk Utility and a freeware program called Maintenance, and unless there' some special reboot needed, I still see the files there. At this point, and after reading more on pondini.org, I'd rather figure out a way to "Put Back" deleted backups sitting in trash bin to their place in Time Machine folder via finder, if I could figure out a permissions way around the error message I get saying "The operation can’t be completed because backup items can’t be modified." Is there some way of tricking the Finder window into letting me copy back items somehow? Once I get them back in, I will go through and delete the files from INSIDE Time Machine Star Wars view like suggested.    Force deleting items from trash using TrashIt or OnyX is my very last resort. Once I get this figured out, I intend to upgrade to Mavericks, but I want to do it with everything working and clean.   Thanks again!

  • Files in my trash bin which I didn't put

I noticed there are file in my trash bin which I didn't put. Pictures folder files and sometime document files. Did I somehow got infected by virus....

No, you don't have a virus.
Are these items inside a folder called "Recovered files"? If so, they're just temporary files that were left in the temporary folder by some app and cleaned up to the trash on a restart. If you're seeing original files somehow being moved to the trash, you may be accidentally triggering the "move to trash" keystroke (command-delete).

  • !!! How do i retrieve images that by accident got in the trash-bin

When I wanted to delete 1 picture from a slideshow, i wasn't aware that i selected 890! images.
So when almost all my pics were gone i clicked 'undo' from the 'edit' menu. And then aperture crashed...
After starting it up again all these images are in aperture's own trash-bin. But I can't retrieve them, not by dragging them , not by ctrl-click, i can't do anything with the images.
    Please help!!!

Were you in the slide show album or the project when you deleted the images? What key stroke did you use, delete or ⌘-del?
When items are in the trash you can right click the item and select *put back*. The item is returned to from whence it came.

Why can't you do anything with the images? What is happening when you right click the image(s)?
Doing the database repair steps CorkyO2 suggested is a good idea anytime Aperture doesn't quit cleanly.

  • Password for trash bin

how do i set up a password for trash Bin before i clean  the bin?

The solution is to give your family restricted access to only those folders you wnat to, not to the whole computer. If kids are around, this is a total family adventure. I do not dare ask why should they access ALL your computer.

  • In photos: I have tried to select and delete some duplicate pictures that I transferred from my other iPhone 5S on this new iPhone 5S and when I select the only options available is moving the photos or email/text. I cannot put in trash bin

iPhone 5s photos/video,deleting duplicate photos and video transferred from other iPhone 5s & iPhone 4S
I have tried selecting photos and videos to throw them in trash bin, but the trash bin doesn't work when pressing and or clicking on it
I would like to know how to get rid of the unwanted and duplicate pictures that I've transferred from my other iPhones.
If someone could please help me, I would greatly appreciate it !!
    Thank you so much,
    Ginger

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

  • Downloads from Safari going to trash bin

    Hello,
Whenever I download files from Safari they go to the Trash bin. It's only with direct downloads using Safari as iTunes and other program downloads/updates go to the appropriate locations. I obviously messed something up (probably deleted some important download files or pathway) and I don't know how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the basic question.
    Thank you!

If I want to create a Download folder on the desktop that Safari will download to, I'm thinking I should create it at the Macintosh HD level so that it would be at the same level as the Applications and Documents folders, right?
No. That level is for system-wide folders. There shouldn't be a Documents folder there. Documents should be in your home folder, along with a Downloads folder. If you really want the Downloads folder on the desktop, Command-Option-Drag it there. That will create an alias to it on the desktop but leave the folder in its normal location.
Instead of putting it on the desktop, why not drag it to the dock (to the right of the divider bar) or to the Finder sidebar (lower section)?

  • I am using iPhoto 2009.  If I empty the trash bin, will it delete those pictures from albums I have created?  I noticed some of the pictures appear to be the same in both the trash and album.

I have a lot of photos in my trash bin and was thinking about emptying the trash.  However, I got a message that said that if emptied, I would not be able to recover them.  I chickened out.  I looked at several pictures in the trash and noticed that they were the same pictures in albums that I had created.  I compared the numbers shown on those pictures in the trash and found that they were the same as the numbers shown in on the pictures in the albums that I had created.  I would like to delete the pictures to create more space, but I don't want to lose pictures that I can't replace.

yes - albums are not copies or places - they are pointers in the databae pointing to the photo in the library - you can see it in an album, under photos or under events - but it is all the same photo - if you delete it it is gone everyplace - and no additiponal space is used for an album (or many albums - a photo can be in many albums without using any additional space
Only put photos that you do not want to keep in the trash
How much free space do you have on the disk volume that the iPhoto library is on?

  • I have sent a file to the trash bin. When I come to empty the trash bin everything goes out except this one particular file and I get a note saying the file is 'in use' but it is not. How can I delete this file from trash?

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?

First just try logging out and back in.  Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.
You might also try Trash It!

Unable to delete email from trash bin.  How do I do this?  If I select and chose delete, it doesn't.  What am I doing wrong?  My grand daughte is using my iPad and I don't want her to see some of the mail there.

There are two ways that should work. When you are in the trash folder, you can swipe on the email in the list - left to right - and a red Delete button should pop up. Or you can select - Edit - at the top of the list of messages and then select the message and tap delete.
Not sure exactly how this works - but if you have restrictions enabled - especially since you let your grandchild use the device - that may be restricting what you can do in the mail app. Go to Settings>General>Restrictions. If you have it set to on - turn it off or see if you have mail restricted.

  • Cannot see items in my trash bin sice upgrading to mountain lion

cannot see deleted items in my trash bin, since upgrading to mountain lion,it seems to delete items straight away.

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Slow after upgrading to Mavericks and cannot delete items in trash bin

I recently upgraded my iMac running Intel Core i5 to Mavericks. Once I did that I noticed that my computer was extremely slow. It never used to be slow until this update. Also I cannot delete anything in my trash bin. It will tell me how many items are in there and says that it is "safely removing items" but does not. Are there any software updates or solutions to making my iMac faster and helping with my trash bin??
    Thanks!

Hold down the Option key while emptying the Trash.
As for your Mac running slower... make sure there's enough free disk space.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

I have dragged 2 files to the trash bin but I cannot delete them from the trash bin. It keeps telling me these files are in use when they are not. How do I delete these files? One is a txt file and the other is an xls file

From the Finder menu select 'Secure Empty Trash'. If this or the suggestion above doesn't resolve the problem take a look at the various suggestions in this link:

  • How do I restore files to their original location from the trash bin?

I accidentally deleted a large number of files. I was trying to delete a certain type of file from a specific folder, but ended up deleting all of the files of that type from the computer and, worse, from the external hard drive docked on my desktop. We are talking about 6000+ files. I could not in five years manually copy these files back into their original locations. I deleted additional files after this before I realized what was happening, so I've used up my one undo. Is there no way in Mac OS X to automatically restore these files back to their original locations? It's worth noting that I have not emptied the trash bin; the files are all still there, and this is a brand new computer, so Time Machine hasn't been configured (even if it had been, the external hard drive I would have used for back up is the one I would need to be restoring these files to). You would think something like spotlight, so proficient at finding the file types I was looking for, would also be able to put them back to their original locations.

That is a feature available in Windows but not on you Mac. Your only slender hope is Undo, but it only has one go, and you say you've used it.
If the task of relocating them seems impossible, and you say the machine is brand new, then the quickest thing would be to reinstall the OS and start again, as you would not have personalised/changed it much, so soon.
