Cleaning up iMac in Finder

Hi, I've had an iPhone/iPad for a long time and am pretty familiar with Apple products but just got an iMac and I'm very confused when going to clean it up through Finder for the first time. Apparantly when I click on "All My Files" I have over 3000+ images/downloads saved. Most of them are labeled as "Portable ICS Images" or "Apple Icons". It gives me the ability to delete them but I'm not sure I should? Also, it has been auto saving every single image in every email I've opened, including attachements. Why does it do this automatically and can you stop it? Wouldn't the computer be smart enough to know that if I want to save an image I will do so manually? I want to be able to clean up my computer efficiently and without much time, and this really seems like a hassle. Very confused, please help.

Thank you, I appreciate the help. My only concern is that through my email I have received spam messages from Craigslist ad's I've posted, and if anyone has ever received these spam messages from Craigslist they contain images/photos that are not always appropriate and are soliciting. Turns out by just veiwing these emails, because I don't know they are spam until I open them, it automatically saves a copy of the images under "All My Files" - subfolder - "Images". They show up here even after I've deleted the emails. I just don't understand why the Mac stores a copy of these images from emails. Even when I recieve emails from bills I've paid online, the company logo from the email is stored the same way. I just don't understand why it does this because for obvious reasons I do not want some of these images stored on my computer, anywhere. And to my understanding, if even a copy of these images are being stored it will eventually eat a way at the storage capacity and thus I will have to constantly go into Finder and delete these manually. Not to dig any deeper into this, but it's a huge hassle because these images are mixed in with other pre-existing images that my Mac already came with, the "Apple Icons", etc, that I mentioned previously. So therefor when I'm going through and deleting the unwanted images it's auto saved, I do not want to delete anything I shouldn't by accident that the Mac needs to operate. Sorry for the shpeel, stuff like this just bothers me. Should I just take your advice and turn off the All My Files and not worry about it?

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

Yes. You can use iTunes 11.
As noted, you need 10.7.5 to use iCloud though.

  • Cleaning the iMac screen

    I have a new iMac.
It seems that it has some kind of screen cover , I don't succeed to clean the screen from marks with any product.
Is there  a solution please ?
    Thanks.

Spit Shine with the "Provided" Micro Fibre Cloth is the best way.
    In Detail:
I had my iMac for a few months now (purchased 1qtr 2014) and I have wondered about cleaning the screen for some time.  The thing is, I to tried a non-abrasive cleaning product but it did not work.  All that did was clean off the dust but left some insanely annoying smudge marks.  I wondered for sometime and inquired a far and wide about cleaning the iMac but no one really had an answer that actually worked.
Frustrated, I went back to the original box the product and pulled out the manual but also pulled out a black micro fibre cleaning cloth still sealed inside of the box where the keyboard was. I thought, "sure why not".
I continued to perform a really light strokes with the provided cloth and surprisingly all the smudges and streaks started to disappear. I felt as though I was Kratos killing a Titan or something at this point but beauty is the details.
There were some fine peaces of dirt specs stuck on the screen that the cloth would not get off.  I figured I came this far so I wasn't going to give up.
For some odd reason, I thought, "maybe a spit shine D?" .  LOL, no not hocking at the monitor, that would be silly but then again ... Anyways, I did dap a little salvia off my tongue, on to my finger, and then directly on those tough spots where specs were, and wiped it away with the micro fibre cloth with ease.  This was by far the best way I have ever cleaned the d*am* thing since purchase.

Not sure why it would default to IMAP?  But any how, start the account anew, fill in the first page of info, but before clicking on the Create button, hold down the Option key until the Create button changes to read Continue.  Click continue, and proceed in a more manual process during which you can set the account type as POP.

  • Imac not finding external drive after reinstall

    Hi there
I have recently downgraded from Mavericks to Mountain Lion.  I have had an external hard drive running time machine since I got my imac.
When I downgraded it found the drive but it did refuse to restore any of the backups.  (Which were all done on Mountain Lion as I had not backed up on Maverick) I had to repeat the install process due to another issue and when I tried to remount the drives it could only find two.
Now this drive has worked perfectly for Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and on Maverick as I upgraded to each.
It runs on the firewire port. Swapping the port is not an option as the drive doesnt have a USB slot and I dont have a free USB port or a hub.
I have 3 in total 2 WD and one LaCie. The original one which my imac wont find is a WD.
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I dont want to reload anything onto my machine incase I have to try erasing and reinstalling again.

i'm using a 1,5 TB WD external hd and 2 others with 320 GB and 160 GB ... formatted on NTFS and it doesn't  mount. it shows up at disk utility but i can't mount it ... and i have all of my life in there

  • Imac cannot find external drive

My Imac cannot find the external drive I have attached.  I have used it many times before, but now it does not recognize that it is attached.  I have replaced the usb cable with not luck and changed ports.  Still no success.  I am backing up to the cloud, and would like to also back up to this hard drive.  Is this a setting issue with my Mac or do I have a bad hard drive?

In Preferences set the loaction of the library that should do the trick.
I have about 1TB of content on an external drive and it works sweetly ( drive needs to be turned on before launching iTunes ).

  • Bluetooth problems: iMac cannot find iPhone

I am trying to set up a bluetooth internet connection between iPhone (iOS 8.1.2.) and iMac (OS X Yosemite). However, the iMac cannot find the iPhone.
    So visited this website:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18559
The website suggests that I shd enter the information you received from your wireless service provider. This information usually includes an access phone number and an account name and password.
Firstly, what is a wireless service provider, my mobile operator?
Secondly, what is an access phone number, an account name and password? Access phone number, is it my mobile number? What is an account name and password, I do not have those?

    Hello 5480,
It sounds like you’ve found a general Bluetooth Internet connection article which your using as a guide to use to share the cellular data connection from your iPhone to your iMac, but it’s requesting information that you don’t have. I suggest taking a look at the article linked below instead, it’ll show you how to quickly and easily setup a Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, which will allow you to share your cellular data connection with your iMac.

I'm trying to figure out how to change the name of my iMac in Find My iPhone. I know how to change the name of the iMac in the sharing preferences but this is not the name that shows up in Find My iPhone, it is getting the name from somewhere else. Anyone know how to fix this?

The "Everything Mac" book that came with my iMac says to clean the display with water only using the cloth that came with the machine or another clean, soft lint-free cloth. An Apple Reseller in this area suggested using a micro-fiber cloth; I have one but haven't tried it yet.

  • I keep getting offers to clean my imac, Mackeeper its called is it a good idea to use this or not?

Ikeep getting offers to clean my imac, the offer is from mackeeper,  one should a person clean the mac, and if so is this the product to use or not.

If it were that good, every-other post here would be recommending it. (None do.)
Instead, it is like online SPAM -- in your face, trying to sell you garbage.
Everything you have to have to keep your Mac working right is already installed at the factory. In certain unusual situations, you may need another program or two. Nothing is needed to clean your Mac -- it does not get filthy.
