Cleaning up my Mac before migration

I'm about to migrate my mid2009 MBP to a new MBP Retina, but before migrationg (using the TimeMachine backup), I'd like to tidy up my current mid2009 MBP, in order to avoid "leftovers" from uninstalled apps. I've noticed in System Preferences, that some apps I (might) have had installed at some point still reside here, even though I think I have removed them earlier from "Applications".
I find "Akami", "Cineform", "DivX", "Flip4MacWMV" and "MacFUSE". Will these apps appear after migration on the new MBP or? - I have cleaned unwanted apps from "Applications".
Any help appreciated.

If you still have enties in System Preferences for some Apps you have supposedly uninstalled then you have not completely uninstalled them.
Just like with Windows programs most OS X apps now place files all over the hard drive in many different folders the app creates or in actual OS X System folders. Just Deleting the .APP file from the Applications folder does not uninstall tha app completely.
You will need to Search out where those files and or folders are and get ride of them.
But if you are going to use a Time Machine backup as a Migration source doing all the removing of those folder and files won't change that TM backup unles you create a new backup.
Also don't use Migration Assistant. Use the Setup Assistant system when you first start your new Mac to import User Accounts, Files, Settings and Apps.
Also note that any PowerPC apps you are now using will not work under the newer versions of OS X.

  • Help--I used Adobe cleaner on my Mac before trying to uninstall it.

Now there doesn't seem to be an option to uninstall. The Adobe Installer folder has an installer option, but no "uninstall" option.  When I click on the install option that is there, it says I can't open it because it's an alias.  How do I completely remove CS6 from my Mac??  I need to do it so that I can start using CS6 on a different computer.

Unfortunately, this IS the second machine.  I want to uninstall the second machine, and install it on a third machine.
But the problem is solved:  I had to chat with an Adobe agent, who reset it for me, and walked me through what to do and now it's working fine. Thanks for the help.

  • Hi, I migrated from PC to Mac, but I can't find some files I had in the PC, this files were invisible but just before migrating I switched off the "hidden" option, ¿Does this files migrated as hidden files or they didn't migrated?

Hi, I migrated from PC to Mac, but I can't find some files I had in the PC, this files were invisible because I had them as hidden but just before migrating I switched off the "hidden" option, ¿Does this files migrated as hidden files or they didn't migrated?

If the filename starts with a dot (.thisfile), then it will be hidden on the Mac.
You can use a 3rd party App, such as EasyFind to search for the file on your Mac, and then re-name (remove the dot)

  • How do I find camera roll photos after backing up my iPad in iTunes before migrating to iOS8 then back to iOS7?

I recently, mistakenly, migrated my iPad to iOS8. In less than a day I concluded iOS8 was not for me, I migrated back to IOS 7.  I backed up the iPad in iOS8 using iTunes before migrating back and now find that my camera roll has gone.  I realise that iOS8 put the photos somewhere else (witness the posts here and in other Mac forums complaining that their camera rolls are 'gone') but shouldn't they have been backed up in iTunes?
I was able to retrieve all the apps from the backup but there was no camera roll.  Where in the iOS8 backup should they be now?  I'm afraid that I haven't figured out a connection from posts describing where the camera roll pictures went in iOS8 to be able to work backwards and restore them.
Can anyone please describe how I might be able to retrieve the Camera Roll?

    You cannot.
You should be importing them regularly as you would with any digital camera.
Did you not import them before restoring?

  • How do i clean up my mac

I am in need of some help with my mac pro this is my first mac and it seems to be doing things I've never seen it do before like not being able to view a pdf file HELP!

Open the Date & Time system preference.  Set the time zone if necessary (shouldn't have to though) and in the Date&Time tab I recommend you keep the checkbox "Set date and time automatically" checked.
...and after rereading the original post...
Note, if all that was wrong was your date and time, asking how to clean up your mac as a title is misleading.  Also I don't understand why you having a problem opening a pdf file has anything to do with date and time?  It just may be that that particular pdf file cannot be handled properly with Preview.  So download Adobe Reader and see if it can handle it.

  • A PRAYER BEFORE MIGRATING

I just opened a present from my beloved, which happens to be a MacBook Pro.
Is there anything I should know/consider/do/think about, etc. that is NOT mentioned in the instruction manual, setup instructions, Mac Website, etc. before migrating data from my old iBook to the new MacBook? Anything? Special considerations? I will hold off migrating for now, and hope to get some good suggestions from y'all out there.
Thank you in advance, to those who reply, for your comments to this post.

    Congratulations!
Don't use the mac migration assistant utility. Start with the note S.U. posted. This one also has some good tips too: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2195685&tstart=0

My mac is running super slow.  I keep seeing ads for "clean up my mac" and "clean up my mac 2".  Should I use these programs? Is there something else that is recommended? I have deleted my download folder, but that didn't help much.

  • What is the best software to clean up your mac?

What is the best software to clean up your Mac?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says this user needs attention before migrating. My e-mail does not migrate in the process. this never happened before i updated to Maverick

When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says "this user needs attention before migrating". My e-mail does not migrate in the process. This never happened before I updated to Maverick. I have repaired user permissions but this not make any difference

Just a Follow-up - the migration went fine. The migration did not import Little Snitch, Flip4Mac and DivX, stating they were incompatible.  It also reported that Intego Back up Assistant has improper security setting (which I have not yet investigated).
I am encountering small problems.  Safari would not open embedded pdf documents and instead showed a black screen.  This was fixed with instructions found at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html and it now works fine.
Importing 17 years of old mail from Eudora to Apple Mail was time consuming. mostly because of the pre-migration preening i did, but using Eudora file cleaner before the migrtaion helped a lot.
I amy find some more glitches, but so far everything seems to be working.

  • I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored my music I had to rename all those songs again. How do I get itunes to remember all of those names?

I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. I do this every once in a while because it seems to improve performance. I backup everything to an external drive and then I restore only what I want from my backup drive. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored/reloaded my music I had to rename all those songs again. It took me about 2 weeks to reorganize my music. How do I get iTunes to remember all of those names and keep everything exactly the same when I restore/reload the music into iTunes?

It may seem like it does but it really doesn't.
Just delete stuff you don't want.

Use Time Machine, backup everything, do the reinstall (I recommend you don't do it) then restore your user folder with Time Machine.

  • I just bought a new Mac and migrated my CS6 over.  Now when I open it, I'm told I'm running a trial version of Cloud.  Why can't I use my CS6 version that I purchased?  I don't want to pay for something I've already bought.

Here's how to convert the Trail to Permanent:
    On receiving Trial/Trial Expired screen
Make sure that you are online
    Click on license this software
Perpetual product owners: Log in with adobe ID and enter product serial number
    Product should be licensed successfully

  • I want to upgrade to Mavericks. Will I need to reinstall all of my apps and copy my files back to the hard drive?  I have not installed an OS on a Mac before and I'm wondering whether it is as involved as on a PC.

I want to upgrade to Mavericks. Will I need to reinstall all of my apps and copy my files back to the hard drive?  I have not installed an OS on a Mac before and I'm wondering whether it is as involved as on a PC.

Short answer: You do NOT have to reinstall all your apps and copy your files back.
Longer answer: Upgrading the OS does not touch any user files. Upgrading the OS should not interfere with any applications which are compatible with Mavericks.  In my experience non-Apple apps are generally left unchanged by the upgrade.  It is possible that some apps may need to be upgraded. One good resource for checking application compatibility is RoaringApps.
Finally, it is always wise to backup everything, just in case.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install

I have an iMac Model M5521, circa 2000, which I must wipe the hard drive clean to DOD specs before donating it.
I have the DOD software on another non-apple computer.  I need to remove the hard disk drive from the iMac to do this.
How do I get to the hard drive?  I find only two screws on the back of the monitor/case and they do not help.  What am I missing?
    Thanks

It's not too hard but you have to take off the bottom cover of the case. These instructions shoudl show what yo uneed to do.

I pulled the original 10G hard drive from our M5521 and replaced it with a larger one. The whole thing took under 45 minutes, including the 15 minutes it took me to recover a screw that fell into the works.
