Cleaning up PhotoStream

i have about 2500 photostream project images on the laptop and 3000 photostream project images on the desktop with no correlation between any of the Months in terms of their being the same number of images in each monthly project on both respective databases.
i would like to get rid of these images in these monthly dated projects as the whole thing is way too confusing.
1. is it possible that there are in fact images in one of these monthly dated project folders that are NOT in a project in my normal aperture database?
2. is it possible that there are images from my Camera Roll on my iPhone that i have been importing to the database on my MAC PRO desktop machine that were imported into one of these monthly dated PhotoStream Projects and which are NOT in a project in my normal database - where i have been importing images via a wired cable connection for four years?
3. if the answer is "Yes" to both of the above is it possible there is an automated Duplicate Detector that will let me delete images from the Aperture database - say, leaving only ORIGINALS in the PhotoStream Project or in a Project that i manually move all my PhotoSteam images into? this way i can be sure not to lose any images?
TIA for any help
cleaning up PhotoStream

not even the Aperture experts seem to know the answer to this one. it's like a card trick almost.
i wonder if any of the developers or mac forum folks know the answer to this one?
losing my data (which happens to be a record of construction for business purposes) is not an inconseqential outcome of getting this wrong...

  • Recommendation needed for duplicate clean-up and photostream settings

Good day. We have 2 iphones and macbook and an iMac. The iMac is our main photo repository.  However, it has become overpopulated with photos. In iPhoto, I have the automatic import selected, so I have all kinds of duplicate photos now.  I also imported all my wife's photos from her iPhone too.  Now I'm going through 1 by 1 to sort, move photos to events, remove duplicates, etc.
I think I'm good on the settings moving forward, but I'm looking for a way to efficiently review and remove photos.  Any recommendations on this?
The other question I have is once IOS photos are imported and tagged with 'photostream' on my iMac - I assume I must delete these to remove them permanently, ie - they are not part of my 1,000.  Once they are imported to the iMac from photostream - they are on there until I delete them correct?

You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when one library has been imported into another with iPhoto 8 and earlier.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.

  • More than 1,000 photos in Photostream, Events as well?

I made a clean install of Lion and recuperated about 5,000 photos in a regular folder structure. Never opened iPhoto after the clean install.
Yesterday, I upgraded iPhoto on all devices, including my MBP and opened iPhoto for the first time. I activated Photostream and now I have the advertised 1,000 photos in Photostream but overall, I find now 2,300 photos and 79 events. I did not import anything in iPhoto, did not open iTunes and have never synced iPhone and iPad over iTunes with this machine. How is that possible?
I had my 5,000 photos still on my iPhone and iPad where I installed yesterday also iPhoto for iOS. Did Photostream recuperate all of those photos? Did it sync them back from my mobile devices?
    Anybody any ideas?

You're talking about photo stream (up to 1000 photos for up to 30 days).  Photo stream is not a photo storage service, in fact, icloud doesn't provide a photo storage; the only other thing it does is perform backups of the Camera Roll, if you have set that up correctly.  You should be syncing photos to your computer for archiving, don't trust the pics to icloud!
Aside from storing on your computer, there are other services that provide storage - like Dropbox.

    Thanks, Peter.
The "link related" and "text related" crashes were what I interpretted here, too, though I'm at a loss on how to proceed given that this is a fresh system and applications.  This is happening with multiple InDesign projects in a design office environment where many others work on the same files and none of the other computers are having problems with these files.  I've removed the same files listed (thank you for those) before and did so effectively with creating the new user account to test with, but it had no effect.  I just tried again though, as these files could easily have becone corrupt again if they were being written to when InDesign crashed.  Will let you know if that makes any difference.  I've also gone through and completely cleaned out the fonts again and once more cleared the font caches.  If need be I'll reboot this system into safe mode and try that way.

  • Some pictures from My Photostream not showing up in Photos

I noticed that something strange is going on in the new Photo App. As you may know there are two choices for viewing photos: Photos and Albums.
The first (Photos) shows my pictures ordered by date and location. The second (Albums) show it all in the old fashioned way.
Today I was cleaning up my Photoroll since all my pictures are also in My Photostream and I want to gain some more free space on my iPhone. The strange thing I noticed after that was that on the Photos overview some pictures from My Photostream are shown, but a lot of pictures are not. If I place those pictures back into my Photoroll from My Photostream, they appear in the Photos overview again. But that's not what I want since they arte stored twice on my device this way...
Can someone please help me understand how the new photo app works? Why are some pictures shown, and some not?

Do the choice items match up in the form to the options available in the list?

  • Photostream sync

I have no photos in Photostream in iPhoto '11 ver 9.4. I have 1000 photos in Photostream that my iPad and iPhone see but the stream has not been updated lately. I turned on all of the preference to sync but nothing is happening. How do I fix this?

Thanks and I agree about photostream being iffy.
But is there any way to delete all your photo's on photostream so that ipad, iphone and apple tv's have a clean slate too?
I have delete all of the photostream photo's in iphoto (via desktop) and yet my idevices and apple tv still have the old stream.
I tried turning it off and on on my ipad and the photo just reload!

  • Unwanted images in PhotoStream

What if I delete recent photos from my Mac or iPhone? Will they stay in PhotoStream then?

Yes I think that is your best option. Auto Import not normally selected anywhere.
I don't have a small iDevice. I think for an iPhone you don't have a choice the images get sent to Photo Stream automatically. What I would do would be to let that happen, forget about it, then at your recieving computer only lift out of PhotoStream those images you want to keep.  Photostream does not use any of your storage, yes delete all or any images from your iPhone. Once you have recieved and selected the ones you want at your desktop, clear the Stream and re populate it with any images you may like *available* on the iPhone. You could keep a folder of images 'for the iPhone' .You don't have to import them to the iPhone to view them.
This is one of the advantages ot Photo Stream. It allows you to free up memory in iDevices or... buy iDevices with lower memory yet get still have more available storage.
Regarding DSLR I have tested with Nikon NEF (RAW) images and altough it's a bit slow uploading, I have sent NEF's home and they are good to read in Adobe Cs5 Photoshop as though they were just lifted off the card. Just for fun I tried uploading a 100Meg TIFF file. Photo Stream swallowed it without complaint.
I don't use iPhoto routinely, I normally use Lightroom and Photoshop, I have been using iPhoto for testing recently. I never allow any software to import straight from the card (or camera) I always simply lift the image files into a new dated folder in my Pictures folder. That way I have a clean, untouched version of every image which is backed up to Time Machine and elsewhere. I then ingest a copy of them to Lightroom (or iPhoto).
We are at the beginning of a very interesting journey and Photo Stream, the iCloud and Lion will evolve over the next few months to become a versatile tool.

  • Cleaning up my iPhoto Library

I am having difficulty cleaning up my iPhoto Library before I switch to Aperture.  In particular:
        1.  How do I process the multitude of monthly photostream events (i.e. "October 2013 Photostream") so that I can maintain the original photos in events that better describe them, e.g moving family photos to an event called "Family" (which I will later divide into appropriate "albums"?
         2.  It appears that I have many duplicates in my library.  Am I safe in using a program such as "Duplicate Annihilator" to remove the duplicates to "Trash"?
    TIA

You may have a damaged database file. To rebuild the library launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions. Select the first three options. It will be recreated when you next launch iPhoto and you'll have to reset the preferences as you had them before.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • 10.7.2 clean install, cannot install iPhoto 9.2

So 3 days ago I bought a new MBA 13" base model and after 24 hours of attempts, I couldn't get iPhoto to update to 9.2. So after 2 days (additional) of trying the Lion Recovery thing (didn't work), I went to my Late 2011 Mac mini to the App store and force downloaded a fresh, up-to-date, copy ot Lion. Copied this to a USB drive, erased the MBA internal disk, Fresh Clean Install of Lion (15 minutes btw). Lion boots fine, asked me to sign into iCloud and told me that to turn on photostream that I needed to download iPhoto. Went to the App store, logged in, went to Purchased, downloaded iPhoto 9.2. The download went through almost the entire way and then, "An Error Occurred" appears in place of the download progress bar in the Purchased tab. A few moments later my screen goes Gray and 3/4 of the way down in the center I get the Spinning Bar. Now it's stuck there, spinning (for atleast the last half hour).

What version do you have now?
Upgrading from iPhoto 09 or earlier requires a purchase.

  • Ios 5 loaded on all but cannot open on the mac with no photostream

cannot change from Mobileme to Icloud. Don't get the screen i'm supposed to see - just Find my phone. Cannot therefore get Photostream on iPhoto.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • Why does only a few of the photos in my camera roll download to photostream

Not all my pictures from my camera roll go to my photostream so I can download to my pictures on my pc.

Have you synched your phone to iTunes lately?   Maybe there is a corrupted sync that needs to be cleaned up.

  • How to wipe iCloud clean?

Well, how you do this? Is it even possible? I see no way of deleting back ups and photostream. You can delete contacts from adres book by selecting them individually or cma+a them and then delete all together, you can delete all BUT ONE calendar rom calendar app, and then this bloody calendar syncs back to my devices. Is there a way to reset iCloud clean?
...ok found photostream reset option...why isn't there a complete wipe right in the advanced right next to photostream or at least a separate wite buttom for all the features?

I don't believe so. I have (or I believe I have) some corrupt data on my iCloud storage, I've been in contact with the engineers who are investigating, if wiping my storage clean was something I could do myself, I'm almost certain I'd have been told about it by now.

  • Does anyone know how to delete duplicate photographs will it affect photostream

Does anyone know how to delete duplicate photographs I seem to have so many, is this anything to do with photostream as I have an ipad as well. I have over 7000 photos and find it impossible to find them all. When I first got Apple 9 years ago there was a drop down menu that found all duplicates which you could then delete but that was taken off at some point. I would be really gratful for some help i am not savvy with the technical side of computing.

For dealing with duplicates in iPhoto check out Duplicate Annihilator or Decloner or iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner or  iPhoto Library Manager

  • How to transfer photostream folders from old to new PC

I just got a new PC and have set up the iCloud control panel.   My photostream photos are currently being synced between my old PC, iphone, and ipad.  The previously synced photos are stored in the "My Photo Stream" folder on my old PC.  I would like to transfer them to my new PC -- what is the best way to do that?  Can I simply copy the folder from the old to new PC using an external drive?  In that case, will they still be synced between all of my devices?
    Thanks very much!

    Martin,
I would recommend starting over this time using Setup Assistant. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when  you turned on the new iMac for the first time.
