Cleaning up the iTunes Interface

Hello,
In the past I deleted old music files I didn't want on my hard drive anymore. Now I see they're still showing in the iTunes interface. What's the best practice for deleting 'ghost' listings in the iTunes interface once the files they linked to are gone?

If it's just a few items click on them once and hit delete. If it's a more general cleanup you can check scripts on Dougscripts web site that do things such as scanning your library and removing dead links.

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Note with iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show all your purchases with cloud icons that allow them to be streamed or downloaded from Apple's servers.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
If, for some inexplicable reason, the media has been removed from your computer see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

How can I sync selected books to my ipad via the itunes interface?

I have a lot of books and pdfs all neatly tagged in my itunes library, and I would like to be able to sync selected books to my ipad from the itunes 'books' library page. I cannot for the life of me find a way to do this!
I realise you can choose to sync either 'all books' or 'selected books' from the 'Devices' > 'ipad' > 'books' tab option; however this is not really feasible as all you can do here is select from the entire list of books (only options are to sort by title or author).
It is obviously much easy to find the set of books I'm interested in using the itunes search, and sorting based on the various tags I have in the metadata. I would assume there must be a way to highlight the relevant books in this view, and 'send to ipad'? There is an option to put a check mark next to a book, but this deosen't seem to do anything at all.
If anyone could help I would be grateful, the only other option I could think of would be to identify the relevant books in the itunes library view, write down thier titles, and then sift through the 'selected books' in my ipad 'books' tab and check them one by one!! Not fun

Oh, how I wish that would work!
I know the thread is over a year ago, but I came upon searching for a solution to the exact same problem. iMaestro, you've described what's needed exactly--a way of checking all of them, and then deselecting a certain limited subset.
Unfortunately, when you check Sync Books, All Books, the selection portion is then greyed out. Maybe this problem was introduced with the latest iTunes version!
I think I'll be stuck having to painstakingly check most of a set of books, rather than just uncheck the dozen or so that clutter up the list.
Oh, related to that. I'm assuming that there's a way of deleting the books entirely... maybe that's another solution.

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Featurs appin the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
- New cable and different USB port
- Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause

The iTunes notifier (exclamation point at the farthest left)

The iTunes notifier (exclamation point at the farthest left)of the iTunes interface...that indicates a broken string...What is it called (so I can find faqs about them)? And most importantly, how can I remove ALL of the hundreds that have grown there other than one by one??
The exclamation point does not show until I try to play the tue...so I don't know which tunes will play until I try to use them.
Can anybody help with this?

I don't know of a direct way to do this, but there is a very talented person on these boards who writes scripts for these things. (Unfortunately my link to his pot of gold is broken---google stepped in and squashed him! HMMMMM!)

Looking to move iTunes interface from one machine to another

I have a NAS server with about 1TB of music and movies on it, most of which I uploaded from my CD and DVD collection. I have a laptop that has all of that 1TB of data loaded into the iTunes interface, yet none of the data is actually stored on the laptop...all of it is on the server, and iTunes points to the server for access to the music and movies.
Is there any way to copy the iTunes interface from my outgoing laptop to my new laptop, so that I don't have to go through the painstakingly long process of adding all of the files and folders onto the new laptop from the server? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Copying the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new one will automatically put all of the files into my iTunes on my new computer?
The NAS is drive mapped on the old computer and is also already drive mapped on the on the new computer with the same letter.

Do PlayFile and AddFile still exist in the iTunes COM interface?

I'm playing around with the iTunes COM SDK on Windows. I'd like to come up with a script that causes iTunes to play a video file, and either the PlayFile (associated with the liTunes interface) or AddFile (IITUserPlaylist) methods ought to do the trick -- at least in theory.
Unfortunately, neither of them work. They're both still apparently valid method calls, since my Java -> COM bridge barfs when I feed it invalid method names. But neither of them actually does anything. By way of contrast, OpenURL and AddURL both work perfectly -- and they'd be viable workarounds, save that they both assume the input file is streaming audio and store it in the library as such.
Have these methods been deprecated? If so, what have they been replaced with? Or is it more likely that I'm running afoul of one gotcha or another?
Right now, the only workaround I can think of is to write code that edits "iTunes Music Library.xml" directly, and I'd rather avoid that for what should be bloody obvious reasons.

In general:
- The best way to check if files are in a library is to drag the whole media folder to the library. If something was missed it will be added. If it is in the library is won't be added a second time.
- If you have a second copy of a file and iTunes does not currently list that specific file in its database then even if it is identical to one already in the database it will add it a second time. So if you have file xyz on the internal drive and the external drive and add them to iTunes you will end up with two entries for the same thing in iTunes because you really do have to copies of the files. While this can happen with two copies on a single drive, it will almost definitely be the case when you have a copy of a file on two drives because iTunes really sees them as two different things.
-Unless you know how iTunes works, avoid moving files yourself. Let the consolidate feature do all the file moving. Manually moving files can really mess up iTunes unless you know what you are doing and have iTunes set to not try to do it itself.
- There's no clean and easy way to delete duplicates. The best thing is to change practice so you don't create them. Here are references:

Hello can some one assit me please. I have purchased a new lap top and copied my old itunes files accross so i do not loose all my music, and have to start again. I can play and see allof my tunes and play these. However I am unable to access the Itunes store through my itunes files. It will not interface at all. I can access itunes store through the Web, but not through the my ituntes file. I have gone in and authorised the laptop through the various process. Highly frustrated already paided a computer person to fix this. However hed deleated all files and started again he had it work and then I turned computer on again and it will not interface from the itune file to itunes, So if I copy a CD it will not tell you the name of the track. I cannot asscess the itunes store to action anything. Please assit me

I am not an expert, but assuming that you have a Windows or Mac folder with music in it and want to move that to a new laptop, I think you have to import it into iTunes. iTunes needs to associate each file with a link, so copying it over will not associate a link.
Delete the files and try importing.

Where is the "apps" menu item in the new iTunes interface?

Where is the “apps” menu item in the new iTunes interface? I can no longer transfer files from my PC to my iPhone.
I just downloaded and installed the updated iTunes for my iPhone. I cannot find the “apps” menu item anywhere. How can I continue to download various types of files FROM my PC (Windows 7) TO my iPhone? I previously did this by clicking on the “apps” menu item and going from there. I cannot find the “apps” anywhere on the new iTunes. Thanks.

Tonefox, no it's not under "Music" but I did some more digging and found where Apple has "hidden" Apps on their latest iTunes for PC. You need to click on "iPhone" (upper right menu item) to display more menue items, of which Apps is one of them. When I had clicked on "iPhone" before, I mistakenly closed the the iPhone option from view because I clicked on the up arrow next to iPhone, instead of just iPhone. Once you click on iPhone, the options look similar to what they did in the earlier version of iTunes and you can easily find Apps.

I bought a new Sony Vaio Laptop running Windows 8, 64bit, i7 processor. This was extremely annoying for me, also. I started uninstalling unneeded Sony applications to try to narrow down the problem. It turned out not to be a Sony application... it is some functionality built into the bluetooth driver software package by Broadcom. Uninstalling the bluetooth package (via the control panel) takes care of the problem. Itunes also boots up way quicker. But uninstalling it will remove features related to bluetooth and nfc. For me, that isn't an issue, since I don't use them. Since you said you're "computer challenged" I would probably just send an email to sony complaining about the problem. They'll get in touch with Broadcom eventually (the manufacture of the drivers) and get the problem fixed.
Side note: the Broadcom package is huge... nearly 1GB in size. Which is crazy. I can't imagine what it does considering the size of it. Entire operating systems can take up less storage. Also, I have no idea how it starts an itunes plugin without placing it into the standard plugin directories.
