Cleaning Worm/Generic.GTD

Hello all,
I hope I have posted this in the right place, sorry if not.
I have recently returned from an overseas trip and have been storing my photos variously on a portable hard drive and sd cards. Whilst doing so I have picked up a worm that AVG virus software describes as Worm/Generic.GTD. The affect on my hard drive is that it still holds the approx. 10GB of photos, but the photo folders and files themselves are hidden and replaced with a folder with the same name but reading as holding only 220kb of info. Also, folders that I have delete reappear and I can't access any of the information in the the folders.
The reason that I am posting here is that whilst overseas I also purchased a Macbook. I am a new Apple user and am unsure of the vulnerability of Macs to viruses in general, and specifically Worm/Generic.GTD in this case.
I really want to sort my photos.
So my questions are, a) will this worm infect my Macbook if I plug it, and b) if yes, how can I plug in the affected hardware, clean it, access my photos + make sure the worm doesn't infect me all at the same time.

No, not unless you install Windows on your MacBook, and then only the Windows section would be affected.

Time to restore the hard drive to its original factory-new contents.
If you don't have the Toshiba recovery disc, you can order it by calling (800) 457-7777.
They will want your computer's serial number and a credit card number.

IPhone: Project tracking software for app authors?

I am moving from the Windows world to the iPhone world and wonder if there is any simple task tracking packages out for the Mac. On Windows interestingly enough I find the Task manager in Outlook nearly perfect for keeping a list of bugs and features and their current status for multiple applications. Not overly complicated, but quite powerful. So I am wondering if there are any similar applications for the Mac, as I am simply using the checklist feature in Buzzword right now.

Why not go for full-fledged bug tracking solution like Bugzila? The installation is very simple. Alternatively try Omnifocus - it's a generic GTD application (and very good one)

My firefox just auto upgrade but Kaspersky find that it contain virus "PDM.Worm.PSP.generic"

My firefox try automatic upgrade today and then I was warned by Kaspersky. My Kaspersky detected the file firefox.exe contained virus "PDM.Worm.PSP.generic" and deleted it automaticly.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Lenovo g550 can't use wifi or video card after clean install of windows 7 from generic iso

My hard disk crashed and I didn't have the restore cd, and windows doesn't see the WIFI or Video card now. I've updated the drivers from support but it still work see them. I haven't tried updating the bios version yet. Is there a step i'm missing?

Welcome to the forum. Please post a picture of device manager. That will give a much better idea of what's missing.
It is always best to install drivers in the following order. Chipset, Audio, Video, Ethernet, Energy Management and then the rest.

Win 8.1: Reset vs Install on partitioned drive (XP- upgrade 8- upgrade 8.1) now need clean install

This is a little complicated.
I have a Thinkpad T-60 (4GB) and a T-61p (8GB)
Both machines have SATA drives partitioned in 3 (System, Images, Data)
Originally, both had XP (the T-61p was RAM upgraded to 8 GB before upgrade (remember the $50 early-bird special?)
I upgraded the T60 without problem (as I recall).
I had to get the 64-bit physical upgrade as you could only download the version you already had (32-bit; remember that disaster?) for the T-61p.
Figuring I had 4 GB on the T-60, I used 64 bit as well, ending up with only 3 GB active. I take it this was a waste and should have just used the 32-bit, right?
I clean installed (as I recall) 8.1 using a generic 8 key (right?) and then an 8.1 key (right?, or is that an 8 key that will still activate 8.1?)
So here it is 3 years later +/- and both 8.1 installs are pretty trashed so...
I downloaded both the 8.1 32-bit and 64-bit .iso's
I have my serial #'s
I tried a Reset on my Server last night (whole disk, no partitions) - it worked, and gave me an option to wipe all disks, or just the C: system disk (which I did, others intact). It is fine, all settings gone, no trash.
Now the question is what will happen with my partitioned drives. I want a clean install on the C: partition, and D: and E: left alone.
Will Reset trash all the partitions and load the entire disk? (NOT what I want) .. or ..
Should I use the Install option? (which I assume will go through the partition manager) and allow me to clean install on C: only.
Lastly, if I have read correctly, there is no point in putting 64-bit on the T-60 (4 GB) as all you end up is 3 GB active anyway, so I should go back to 32-bit and avoid the 64-bit headaches?

Generic GRE not working (ver 4.1.3.55)

Hi everybody.
I'm testing in Lab a configuration for one customer.
It's a basic environment with :
DATA CENTER (wccp)
1 WAEs 7341 and 1 Cat6506 routers
BRANCH (inline)
1 WAE 574.
Optimization works with l2-redirect and gre return in DATA CENTER !!
It does not work with egress-method generic-gre inteception-method wccp.
This is the problem that i can see with " show wccp gre" on the 7341..
" Packets received on a disabled service: 667790".
I read some manuals but...
I don't understand .. The service 61 and 62 works !!
So any idea ?

Can I migrate data from "old" user account to new user after clean install?

I've just done a clean install of Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro (I erased system drive before install). I've upgraded SL to 10.6.2 using a generic administrator account. And I have an exact bootable clone of my old data (SuperDuper backup on external drive).
I don't care about migrating all my old software; I'll reinstall it. But I would like to migrate system preferences, mail accounts, iCal calendars, and keychains etc. And some silly part of me wants to REname my username. (Also: I can't use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant because some part of the old image has Microsoft Entourage hooks in Mail and MobileMe that I want to get rid of.)
So here's my question: if I create a new account with the NEW user name I want to start using, can I STILL then copy over my old data? I don't know which of the below stuff has my old user name embedded in the data. Here's the list:
Your data in ~/Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
Also in ~/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)

what exactly do you mean by that? you can use Migration Assistant to migrate your user only (no applications). that should most likely suffice and i don't think Entourage will be a problem. you'll have to delete various entourage folders in your documents folder afterward if you don't plan on using it anymore.

yes, as bdmarsha said, your user name is not mentioned anywhere in your home directory.

Is it possible for multiple users to use a "generic" account simultaneously without screen sharing?

I am wondering if it is possible to have users use a generic account at the same time without any sort of screen sharing.
I have set up a generic user account (for example useraccount, password 1234) for users to use in the time before I can set up a custom user name for them. However, I have run into some issues with this.
When multiple users log on using this generic account, their applications seem to be shared on each screen. In the room with multiple Mac workstations, if someone starts working on Photoshop, Photoshop will open on every one elses screen who is logged on under that generic account.
Is it possible for users to log on using a generic network account and have their own isolated work environment or is this sort of sharing a feature? I am new to Mac servers and am not sure.

That shared-account approach seems impractical for the various reasons you've identified, as well as the inevitable issue of cleaning up the detritus that'll inevitably build up in a shared account, and for the lack of accountability for activities occuring under the shared account for both auditing and security, and sharing directories would tend to introduce obscure conflicts around which-file-version-wins file updates when the same file is used in several places, and would probably be contrary to any per-user application software licensing agreements that might be involved.
Put another way, get unique accounts created for folks, and work toward the ability to create accounts for arriving folks, and — if it's applicable here — talk to management about getting any per-user software licensing issues sorted out, whether that's having spare copies purchased and ahead or some advanced notice on accounts, or establishing group software licensing where that's available.
AFAIK, there are tools around which can automate account creation, too. Either generic, a tool such as Passenger, or it's certainly feasible to script the account creation sequence.
Trying this shared-access generic-account approach just looks like it can create more work and more hassles and more effort to me...

Proxy Settings Re-Appear after Reboot in Registry Post Malware Clean (Windows 8.1 x64)

Hey Guys -
My main system at home hosts many different things for me. Because I'm an idiot and had protection disabled, I caught some malware which I cleaned off soon
afterwards. The malware was listed as Trojan.Generic.KD or something similar. It had enabled Proxy and set it to 127.0.0.1:58054. I ran Malwarebytes, Spybot, then ExecuteIt to clean the malware off and currently the scans from all 3 apps
come back clean. I also had to manually disable proxy via IE settings.
I have one specific app which for whatever reason will use Proxy settings if they are there over anything else and doesn't offer and configuration to disable it.
Even though proxy is disabled (and cleared) in IE, this app still doesn't work and I still seemingly get redirected to ads in Chrome sometimes. The log file of the app showed it was trying to connect through 127.0.0.1:58054. The thing is,
IE Settings still show Proxy disabled!
The Issue
I checked many things are read a few articles to try to fix this including different Windows 8.1 settings, local Group Policy, startup items, checking Run keys
in HKLM and HKCU for "out of place" entries, and more. Finally, I opened the registry and did s keyword search for ":58054" and found one key with it. I cleared out all of the data and set the EnableProxy string from "1"
to "0", rebooted, and tried again but the app still failed with the same log message. I went back into the registry and found out that the strings I changed had all been changed back! Below is the key / strings I'm talking about which
are located in HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings. It's odd because I usually deal with HKLM and HKCU and don't think I've ever worked in ".DEFAULT" on any system ever before.
I know that a full OS re-install is suggested - and I actually do it every 3-4 months religiously - but - I currently don't have the time for the full day it
takes to perform due to how many things it hosts.
Any ideas on how I can get this to stop coming back after each restart until I can perform the re-install? Below are the system specs. Thanks!

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18, Consequently, settings in HKEY_USERS\.Default are used by programs and services that run as Local System.
In addition to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings, please also check HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings, make sure all proxy server disabled, then press F5 to refresh registry, check the application, if the issue disappears, the the registry entry is the culprit. Then please reboot the PC, if the issue appears again, the virus is not cleared in your
system. In this case, please try other virus clean program if possible, meanwhile, check if there're unknown software installed in your system.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

My laptop will no longer stay connected upstairs away from the modem..... what can i correct as it did proior to a worm issue

I was reading email.... and got a worm... avg and malware got it... I called microsoft and they also finished cleaning up the mess from the worm... But now the laptop will not hold the internet signal for more than a minute or two before it disconnects and i have to restart it.....What can i do

How to install clean win 7 32 bit in touchsmart 300

Hello, i buyed touchsmart 300 for work in add multitouch feature to my software MonoTouchLive
I own windows 7 ultimate 100% legally and i do clean instalation, i not really interested in all tools and softare provided by HP, really good pkg, but i really like clean install.
Im very suprised when after try installl widnows 7 ultima, system freeze with BSOD screen due some comflict and installation die.
Its not possible install win7 32 bit on touchsmart 300 due some conflict, i researcha little and discover way to install windows 7 without trouble:
Step 1, With the Windows 7 DVD in your DVD drive press any key when promped @ 'Press any key to boot from CD / DVD...', as soon as the message is gone, quickly press F8 to show the boot options list. Select Safe Mode and install 7. It will allow the initial stages & file copying.
Step 2, When 7 restarts for the first time, press F8 and select 'safe mode'. A dialog box will appear stating that windows cannot continue in safe mode 'ok' to restart.
WARNING don press ok !!!

Step 3, press SHIFT+F10 to open the command prompt and direct youself to x:\windows\system32

cd system32
then type CompMgmtLauncher (it takes a few seconds to load) you can then access device manager from this console.
Step 4, Select DEVICE MANAGER , and disable all yellow devices is the offending hardware & choose to disable it. JUST LEAVE ENABLE NETWORK ADAPTERS !
Close command window and click ok on the dialog box. Windows will use a standard driver (with less funtionality) when it restarts.
Once installation has finished enabel windows update, taht isntall video drivers and others, the go to device manager and select yelow device drivers, make right lick select update driver.
That fix and isntall missing drivers !! : )

This is usefull for windows 7 32 bits.
I tested with windows 64 and install perfectly without troubles !!
After clean install, this devices not work at 100% ot just not work:
Brighnes display selector not work correctly:
Only can setup bright from POWER OPTIONS ---> change plan settings
Then move the bright slider and press save changes, and newe bright value is configured.
The control volumen buttons in the left of the machine not work, i dontreally use so i not find how fix, probably somebody form HP can inform hoy fix this.

I have the solution to your problems and I will go ahead an explain it in detail so that no questions will be raised.
I have struggled to get WINDOWS 7 (32BIT) to run on the Touchsmart 300 PC now for three days (and nights) but I know how you can do it.
The problem lies within the VGA Adapter (Graphics Card) this little buddy has incompatible drivers with the inbuilt functions of the Touchsmart PC in its generic (Windows Preloaded) form. Therefore what you can do is the this.
Step 1: Insert Windows 7 (32Bit) disk and start the setup process and follow it until it hits the problem. (Millisecond of Bluescreen)
Step 2: Once the PC starts booting repeatedly press F8 (I mean it just keep on pressing that button until you can select "Safe Mode")
Step3: Once Windows Setup screen is back it will tell you an error! Which is good. INSTEAD of pressing "OK" (to restart) press SHIFT + F10 (opens the command prompt)
Step4: You should automatically be in \Windows\System32 now enter the following command: CompMgmtLauncher (This is the Device Manager).
(If the default directory is not System32 the navigate to it by entering "cd windows" and "cd system 32" (cd = change directory)
Step5: In the Device Manager (do not worry it will take some time to load) select navigate to "Display Adapters" - "ATI Radeon ..." RIGHT-CLICK on it and choose disable. (To be sure Windows will not have any other troubles you should do the same for all highlighted devices. the once with the yellow triangle)
Step6: Once this is done restart your system and let the install run into the normal mode and finish the install.
Step7: Once Windows starts for the first time. Use the provided ATI Radeon Driver from HP (NOT the original one) from the support download website to install the correct driver.
Step8: Resart and enjoy!

Help needed in cleaning raw data with odd delimiters in it

I am trying to write a sp, which adjust the number of columns based on the IN Parameter for the raw file.
Raw (Id Int,RawData varchar2(5000))
RawData has actual data with delimiter, this column has all the raw file imported as is.
e.g. data in RawData Column
A|B|C|D|E|F
X|B|C|D|E
Z
P|ABC|ZPD|BITX|E|ETC
Here above you can see the max number of delimiter are 5 for a 6 column table, however for some records there are less delimiter, here comes the problem
For such records I want to add the extra delimter and take values for missing column as NULL or best would be''
plz help me in writing Generic SP to clean this.
We can pass the source & target table name and column names as a parameter, and create a clean table dynamically by name CleanedRaw etc.
here the file is | delimited, actually It can have any single char delimiter or space or tab also. I am ok if we need to pass the delimiter also as a parameter to this sp

I mean padd extra delimiters to make up to the max of 6 for this file, it can vary for other file
e.g
A|B|C
x
would be some thing like
A|B|C
x||
such that target cleaned table will have values as below
Col1 Col2 Col3
A B C
