The "Everything Mac" book that came with my iMac says to clean the display with water only using the cloth that came with the machine or another clean, soft lint-free cloth. An Apple Reseller in this area suggested using a micro-fiber cloth; I have one but haven't tried it yet.

  • Clean your imac

What is a good program to run on the imac for cleaning your imac ?.
The imac works with the latest Snow Leopard, and it looks like its slow !

The usual advice on here is to avoid all programs that promise to 'clean your Mac' - they can do more harm than good, occasionally deleting vital system files. The possible exceptions are OnyX and Cocktail which seem to safely run some maintenance processes.
If your Mac is running slowly there is likely another cause. Do you have any anti-virus software running (often a cause of poor performance)?
Sometimes a Safe Boot can help improve performance:

  • Cleaning Your iMac Screen

I have tried things that immediately came to mind, and nothing quite worked like this... So simple!
    1. Take a fluffly washcloth (not a scratchy, worn out one), wet it with warm tap water, and ring it out.
    2. Have handy a fluffly white cotton T-shirt (again, not an old, scratchy, worn out one), neatly folded with no seams or stitching on the wiping surface.
    3. Wipe the screen with the damp washcloth in circular buffing motion.
    4. Immediately dry off the screen with the smooth side of the folded cotton T-shirt.
Note: You will need to position your hand behind the screen in order to steady the monitor as you buff the front firmly.
Makes my screen look like brand new everytime!

And then there is Apple's way:

  • What's best to clean your iMac?

i use iKlear for the monitor, but wha about the actual case, I use brasso for my ipod, but the case is made from different materials isn't it?

I'm a big fan of iKlear for all the bits & pieces of the iMac. YMMV.

  • What do you use to clean your iMac screen?

I bought a bottle of 'screen cleaner'(for computers and cameras.) I spread it on the screen (it looks like hair mousse) and wiped it with soft cloth.... It left marks! I tried it many times but couldn't make it spotless ...
Should I use window cleaner instead ... since the outer screen is made of glass?

Yes ... 'rub gently' ... that might be the key ...

  • Cleaning the iMac

    Hello!
I'm just curious how often you all dust/clean your iMac? I've noticed that my iMac gets pretty dust (new house), and I was just wondering how often I should be dusting it.
Also, what is the best way to clean dirt off the keyboard keys (wireless keyboard)?
Lastly, is it worth opening up my iMac to clean the dust out of it?
    Thanks much!

As per page 67 of your User's Guide, slightly dampen the little micro fiber cloth and wipe it off.

If you periodically shut down (stopping the fans) and vacuum the air intakes (the bottom grill and small vent on the back under the stand) you should not need to open it up for years. The trick is to not touch or disturb any dust that builds up on the grills when the fans are running.
Do not blow air into the intakes, all that will do is blow dust deeper into the iMac.....
I have vacuumed the air intakes on my iMac every three months sense Jan of 2006 and it runs as cool as the day I bought it. I opened it up in Jan of 2009 to upgrade the Hard Drive and there was almost no dust collected on the fans or anywhere on the inside.

  • How to clean up imac to run faster osx 10.6.8

Hi I have an i mac about 2 years old os x 10.6.8, how to make it run faster and clean up hard drive. how do i check speed

How full is your hard drive?
How much RAM is installed in your iMac?
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in OS X Dock, lately?
Apple Mail and iPhoto have its own Trash that needs to be emptied, have you emptied these, lately?
Do you run any anti-virus software or hard drive "cleaning" software?
How many apps do you run concurrently on your iMac?

What products do you use to clean the screen on an iMac so it doesn't have streaks on it?

  • I keep getting offers to clean my imac, Mackeeper its called is it a good idea to use this or not?

Ikeep getting offers to clean my imac, the offer is from mackeeper,  one should a person clean the mac, and if so is this the product to use or not.

If it were that good, every-other post here would be recommending it. (None do.)
Instead, it is like online SPAM -- in your face, trying to sell you garbage.
Everything you have to have to keep your Mac working right is already installed at the factory. In certain unusual situations, you may need another program or two. Nothing is needed to clean your Mac -- it does not get filthy.

  • Non-technical: cleaning your display and kit

Nowhere have I found advice on this topic. After much effort, I thought I'd share my experiences. If you're like me, a bit OCD about your kit and its appearance, this is for you.
This works for glass/synthetic displays, as well as aluminium housings.
Your iMac display (perhaps your Cinema display) suffers marks from fingertips, drinks and food. It's an unavoidable hazard. My 2013 iMac is a case in point.
The iMac has a glass bezel, the Cinema display is synthetic. It's my experience that both will benefit from the same treatment.
I've used glass cleaners, (non-abrasive) polishes and proprietary solutions such as iKlear. No matter the solution, and the cloth used, streaking and smudging are the result.
    My solution is:
    a clean duster, wet, wrung out - if you use a new duster, it's too soft, try to get an old one;
    a microfibre cloth, dry.
Use the wet duster to remove all filth, then dry with the cloth. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat...
This might seem obvious, but if you Goggle for this solution you'll find very little guidance.

    Seems self-explanatory to me.
    Displays
Disconnect the display from power, from its connection to a computer, and from any external devices. Next use the cloth that came with your display or another soft, dry cloth to wipe dust from the screen. If additional cleaning of the display panel or case is required use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the display.
Warning: Don't clean the screen with a cleaner containing alcohol or acetone. Use a cleaner intended for use with a screen or display. Never spray cleaner directly on the screen. It may drip inside the display and cause damage.

  • Software to clean my imac

What is the best software to clean an iMac?
I bought 'MacKeeper' and installed it, and it promptly screwed up my iMac so badly that I had to re-format and reload S/ Leopard from scratch. What a serious waste of money - be warned!

Third party maintenance utilities are unnecessary.
Leave your Mac on one night a month, (not in Sleep mode), and the maintenance tasks will be run for you between 03:15 to 05:30.
Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks
This advice is also (mostly) unnecessary, on any Mac with Snow Leopard. From the same article linked above:
In Mac OS X v10.6 and later, background maintenance tasks that do not run when the computer is asleep are run after it wakes from sleep mode.
No need to leave the computer on, just sleep it.
Also, it is important to understand that the overnight "maintenance tasks" have very little, if any, actual impact on performance. They do a few things, but they don't really do very much. The more important types of maintenance are fully automatic and out of our hands, such as the way OS X allocates and cleans up disk space (e.g. auto-defragmenting), RAM, and the file system. Those happen constantly.
I've run Macs for many years and under the current OS X there is just about no user-driven maintenance left to do, compared to earlier versions of the system. I have no maintenance software. I used to buy it, but as OS X has advanced, I no longer have to. I have software for when something goes wrong, like advanced disk utilities, but that's not maintenance, that's for recovery.
Why did you feel it was necessary to "clean" the iMac? That's something many Mac users, including myself, never do.
I rarely even clean out caches, and here's why: The entire point of caches is to speed things up by making frequently accessed data more rapidly accessible. By throwing out the caches, you guarantee that the Mac will be slower for a period of time until the caches are fully rebuilt. So I never throw out caches unless there is a problem. Doing it regularly...as "maintenance"...only guarantees that you slow down your Mac on a regular basis.

  • How do you get your iMac to show video (or mirroring) with Apple Tv...please help!

I have searched this forum, read the articles here and on Google and I still can't figure this out. Perhaps what I'm wanting isn't possible.
All I want to do is watch my CBS show from www.cbs.com on Apple Tv via my iMac. The Apple TV moniker is next to the volume in iTunes, and I can play music through Apple Tv via I-tunes and have it play on my TV. Thus, I know it is connected and working. I thought I could do a mirror screen like I do with the iPad, but for the life of me I can't find anyone who has covered the subject online.
Can someone tell me, step-by-step, how to show video from my iMac onto my Apple TV. Thanks so much!
    Confused in the Lou

If the specs you included about your iMac model are correct, it will not support AirPlay mirroring. See About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X - Apple Support for more about this, including the list of supported models & required OS X versions.

  • Is it possible to change iWork files on your iMac without having to upload the modified version to iCloud and downloading it again for the next use ?

Recently I am getting more and more familiar with Numbers, Pages, KeyNote and I have to acknowledge they look smart in many aspects compared to Office for Mac programs ( ..only a bit of time to learn some minor things..). But what really surprises me is that while shifting from MobileMe to ICloud, Apple is not providing a real , full-service, cloud-computing platform for those who , like me, makes use of it mostly for work or business purposes.. I mean, you can do whatever from your Ipad or Iphone ( besides clearly ignoring the necessity one may build up folders with any kind of file in it, not just one categoory..) and every file you manage from these mobile devices, get saved and stored in the new modified version.. But try doing the same form your Imac or McBook Air and you wil have to download from Icloud your file, work on it and having to re-upload onto Icloud back again ==> syncing is not authomatic as it used to be by Idisk in MobileMe  !!.. A real nightmare for those who work with Apple, in my opinion.
One last thing.. I am having trouble at dragging and dropping PDF files onto Icloud, doesn't accept its format.. Although PDF files are mentioned as acceptable at Pages , for example...
I can't see the reasons for all this.. At first I thought this was all being done in order to move more and more users from Windows office to IWork programs, if it were for this, I'd be keen on changing, also because I love Iworks programs.. But I found out it's not !.. Unless people at Apple think that all business driven users of former MobileMe should quit their Imac and start working 8-10 hrs a day with the Ipad   :-) !!
No fear, I know there are plenty of cloud-computing services doing the same as IDisk, but I can't understand why Apple has given so little attention to such needs, that , I guess, are probably the same by many other Mac users..
Thankful for any help-support-opinion on this,
    Maurizio

    m,
You can submit Feedback to Apple from the Numbers menu. That's the official channel for comments about the app and suggestions for improvement. The Apple officials don't visit these discussions except to maintain the decorum.
