Clear Menu

Ive been trying to Clear Menu in Windows Media Player Open Recent option in File, but the option is not offered. Other players, Quick Time & Real Player both have the option. How to I Clear Menu in Open Recent [Files]. Also, I am unable to Delete the individual files that appear in Open Recent. Thank you!

I dont think you can. Just need to open projects manually until they show up in the open recents menu.
In the Apple Menu, you can try Recent items to see if they are sitting there.

Use a tool such as the Property List Editor or TextWrangler to check that application's plist file.

  • Recovering applications lost after choosing "clear menu"

To get rid of some documents I chose "clear menu" but it didn't expect to lose applications also listed. It was late and I was tired. Now I have question marks for Safari, Mail, and Microsoft Word and cannot use any of them. How do I get them back?
I think I was either in "Recent folders" or in "Yesterday" under "Go" in the Finder.
Help! I'm using my wife's iBook to post this question.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*"I have question marks for Safari, Mail, and Microsoft Word and cannot use any of them"*
Do you mean there are ? marks in your Dock where the applications icon used to be? If so, just drag those ? marks off the Dock. Then go to your Applications folder and launch Safari. With Safari open, click the Safari icon in the Dock and then click; Keep In Dock. Do that for Mail and Microsoft Word also.
Hopefully you didn't delete the application from the hard drive. If you did you need to reinstall those apps.
Reinstalling applications that came with your Mac
If you delete an application that came with your Mac, and then need to reinstall it, try any of the following suggestions.
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the package that installs bundled software or additional software. A package has an icon that looks like an opened box.
Follow the onscreen instructions. If you see a pane with a Customize button, click Customize and select the application you want to install. If you see a pane that lets you choose what to install, click the disclosure triangle beside Applications and select the application you want to install.
You will have to reinstall MWord from the install disk. Hopefully, that won't be necessary.

  • How do I remove items Clear Menu doesn't

QuickTime Player and TextEdit (maybe others) do Clear the menu Like TextEdit>File>Open Recent>ClearMenu. HOWEVER, when I right click on Text Edit and QuickTime Player the recent listed items still exist! The QuickTime Player movies may not play, but the TextEdit did open. I'd like to totally remove the "cleared items" any ideas?
    Thanks

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Actually there's a public beta if you look around the site. Honestly all that kind of stuff does nothing to help you computer's stability. I can't tell you how many times someone has some weird quirk that can't be explained until they realize they're running some hack. Especially one that works so deep in the system.

  • How can I clear the Quicktime menu cache?

My quicktime player has 10 old file names cached. They show up when I right click a running QuickTime.app ; and they show up when I choose "Show recents". They are not connected to any actual file (I've removed the files), but I cannot make them go away. The help page says to use File | Open Recent | Clear Menu, but the "Clear Menu" choice is grayed out (and no recent files appear there). Clear Menu did seem to work, exactly once, though I cannot recall if the movies were the same names or some other set.
This appears to be a bug which has two components:
Clear Menu should just work; and doesn't
QuickTimePlayer should have a preferences pane that allows me to choose a reasonable number of prior file names to cache (say 0 to 20). Somewhat amazingly, it has no preferences pane at all.

This only seems to work before you delete/remove the referenced files. I.e., it appears the "Clear" routine may actually check the link(s) for validity and if no longer valid, aborts the "Clear" routine. Be advised that you get similar results if you have an active RSS reference, deleted the sourced web site, and then try to clear the RSS reference entry.
That is pretty much what I had decided. This is still a bug, though: Clear Menu should just work.

The preference already exists. Check out "System Preferences > General > Number of Recent items > Documents" option allows settings of None, 5, 10 (default), 15, 20, 30, and 50. Similar opts arew available for recent "Applications" and recent "Servers" settings. This area also controls the "Resore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option.
This too is a bug. I do not want the same number of "recent" items for all my apps. KISS principle should be "Keep It Simple, Stupid, But Only As Simple As Possible." My usual technique is to provide an adjustable global default for such things, with added individual adjustments. That way folks who have no issue never touch it, folks with a plain vanilla requirement touch one thing and folks who have complex requirements have a complete set of valves and switches under the red cover.

  • Clear Recents in Show Recents Dock Menu

    Hello,
Its probably been there for ever but I have only just noticed the "show recents" after right clicking a Dock menu item, this is brillaint, but how can I clear them?
I've tried clicking them while holding down modifier keys but I can't seem to get rid of them, I have also tried using the clear menu command under the Apps File menu Open Recent, but this does not work, and there does not seem to be anything in the Dock- System Preferences, so any ideas?
    Cheers.

The number of "recents" is determined in System Preferences > General tab > Number of recent items:
You can clear them on the menubar,   > Recent Items > clear menu

  • Managing Menu Bar Items

I've tried to limit the number of apps that have a menu bar presence, and when I work on my home machine with a 20" monitor, I don't have too many problems, but working with my 13" MB at work, most of my menu bar items disappear under the menus of most programs. Even the Finder's menu is beginning to cover up some menu bar icons.
My question is: is there an aggregation app that lets me "stuff" menu bar icons in it, much like (say) Overflow does for the dock? I'd like a single menu bar icon that, when clicked, allows me to access other icons that used to reside on the menu bar, but now don't have to, leaving me with a clearer menu bar and all my menu bar icons accessible.
If something like this isn't available, are there any tricks for dealing with this problem of having too many menu bar icons to access in all programs?
    Thanks!

The first trick is to get rid of the 'enhancer' that allows applications to add their own menu bar items to Apple's, if you have any such applications. (See my last post in Seemingly random freezes and general sluggishness for more about the difference between menu & status items & why you should try to avoid non-Apple menu bar items.) This would include any aggregation app -- Apple does not provide this capability for much the same reasons it doesn't provide support for third party menu items.
Aside from that, all you can do without potentially affecting the stability & security of the OS is to turn off the menu icon display for selected Apple-provided menu bar items, & perhaps to use the smallest format for the date & time icon you can live with.

  • Hi I need to clear all history on my Imac ,everthing I look at website its all in documents.

HI,need some help in how to clear all history from my Imac,it seems to store all items I browse in documents ,when I check what to delete IM not sure as there could be something important.
    many thanks elaine

It's not clear what you want to remove.
If you intend Recent Items under the Apple menu, you can safely remove what's in there by choosing Clear Menu
You can do the same with Recent Folders in Go menu
That's only a history of the items and folders you used. You don't delete anything.

  • Clearing Documents in App's Dock Icon

When I right click an app's icon in the dock, I get a list of previously opened documents.
How do I clear this list?

Open the application on any document; most applications will have an entry "clear menu" in the  file menu:
File -> open recent -> clear menu
If the application does not have this menu item, it might be necessary to delete the preference files.

  • Problem with DIV "clearing both"

I am in the process of building a template for my website. I
have built my Spry menu bar and have designated a div for to become
my "editable area." This area to become the editable area is a DIV
called "main content." It placed directly following the Spry menu
bar. I have set a CSS rule for the "main content" div as: BOX =
    Float: left and Clear: both.
Why is the content (text) for the "main content" div still

Luke, a few problems in your code, don't use spaces in CSS
    div names. Also
you don't need to place float and clear inside the same
    division.
    Try this instead.

  • How do i clear history in quick time

i need to clear all the history from quick time, preview and recents

I've had exactly the same questions and the answer "Goto: File > Open Recent > Clear Menu and Quit the application" did not solve my problem until i've opened a new MP4 file. Somehow, with opening a new file, the history gets cleared. If you simple clear the menu and restart quicktime the old history will still be in the dock.
    To summarize:
Goto: File > Open Recent > Clear Menu and Quit the application
Open a MP4 or other file and see, after opening, if this solved your problem
    In my case it did.

  • How do I clear windows in quicktime?

When you right click the QT icon, a list of the last movies watched shows up. How do I clear this list of windows? "Open Recent- clear menu" doesn't do it. Clearing recent items in the system menu doesn't do it either. I seem to recall a way to push something and right click on the QT icon that then gives you a choice to clear windows in the popup menu, but I can't remember what it is.

don't do it.  It will make your mac slower.  If you insist:
    Clear cache in Lion
Open a finder window and select “Go to Folder” in the Go menu
    Type in ~/Library/Caches
This is optional, but you can highlight & copy everything to a different folder in case anything goes wrong.
Highlight everything and press CMD and Backspace
    Restart your machine

  • Open Recent Menu failure

There was one reference to my problem in the past but an explanation for how to repair or correct the problem was not included in the posting. As well, I've read back a few hundred discussion items and have not been able to find any other references to this problem. I'll understand if it is uncommon.
For some time now I've been unable to see a list of items in my "Open Recent" menu item. The grey "Clear Menu" item appears but none of the recent items I was working on ever appear in the list. I can't remember when I first saw this but I haven't acted on it until today.
I'm using Pages 3.01 on a MacBook Pro and I usually run Parallels at the same time. But I have this problem whether I'm running other software or not.
Now I do rely on CopyPaste to be running when I startup and I have Default Folder set to load on startup because I rely on these so much during my writing. But they are separate applications and don't patch the system, really. So I don't suspect either of these being a culprit.
I've trashed preferences found in the user library without solving the problem.
I'm not a power use of my MacBook Pro so I don't know much about where to see more. Anyone who might be able to either identify my problem and point me to a solution or examine my problem with me and help me diagnose it for other readers would be able to reply to this.
I'm still in 10.4.11 so it's not a Leopard thing yet. Everything else I do on this Mac is pretty normal (except for a flakey copy and paste with Photoshop Elements).
Why this would have worked some time ago and fail in recent months is part of the mystery as well. And for those who might suggest I send in a comment to Apple -- I already have (with little hope for their response).
If I'm the only person having this problem I'll accept the silence.
    Cheers

I have to give special thanks for this to the MacFixit "Be Your Own Mac Troubleshooting Guru" and especially pages 26 and 27.
Essentially the guide states you can drag your User Library folder to the desktop and disable everything at once. Then log out and log back in.
Then launch Pages and find the Recent Menu is working fine.
Then you put back folder after folder until it breaks. I went through all of them and came down to the last two (Application Support and Preferences) with no problem. I then put the Support folder in and expected it to fail - but it did not. So after one more log out and log in I was down to going through all the Preferences files and folders.
Most of them were easy but there were a few which already existed and I did not replace those (about 16 files). None of the ones I left out had anything to do with iWork or Pages (and that's what people were suggesting here).
So, now I have a fully working system with no real changes to the way I had it before. Now there was ONE thing which did not work the way it did before. My two finger hold and click usually brought up the contextual menu (a right click substitute) and this didn't work any more.
I went to System Preferences and turned it back on (Keyboard and Mouse) and things are still working fine with Pages. So, I think I'll say the problem is solved and thank everyone for their support through this process.
The making of a new user was the clue and the use of MacFixit's diagnostic steps helped me work this out over about 2 hours. I know many of you might wonder why I didn't just move everything over to a new user - but those who know will understand the process I used was pretty much the same. Any problem I had in the Preferences folder of the Library would have copied across and I would not have been the wiser.
For Yvan: Yes, I'm waiting with Leopard. I have a couple of utilities which I need in my work and they haven't released Leopard updates yet. When those are in the bag I'll be going up to Leopard.
Thanks everyone. Now I have a process I can use for future problems if I have them in some other area.
    Cheers.

    Hi!
I cleared "Menu Module" property (DEFAULT&SMARTBAR) in my form module, but I still have "Window" menu. Is there way to disable menu at all?
    Thank you.

The default menu is DEFAULT&SMARTBAR (Menu Module property on module level). If you remove SMARTBAR, you will have no smartbar at all.
