No; try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

What exactly does this mean? Your iMac doesn't authorize anything. Are you getting an error message or what message are you getting with regard to authorizing? The iPad is not authorized? What?
    No do not restore yet.

  • Time machine tried to clear my hard drive and I chose "NO" yet hard drive is now showing no files but shows space is still used?

yesterday morning I was working and a window randomly popped up for time machine. I don't have the exact wording that was on the pop up window because I assumed it wasn't spam as it was asking me to choose a place to store my time machine backup. I've never seen this window before but just a couple week ago I was having storage problems and hae tried to fix them by clearing some files. So I assumed this window was about helping clear some space on the computer. So I chose my silver hard drive to use for the backup for time machine. 20 min later I get another pop up that is asking me if I'm sure I want to choose my silver hard drive as it will erase anything that is currently on the drive - I immediately panicked and chose "NO" for it to not use the hard drive. I assumed I was in the clear at this point. But I didn't check the drive until later yestsrday evening and now the folder is empty when I open the drive. Yet when I check the space available on the drive it shows over 400G that's taken and 600+G that's available which means the files I had on there are still there but I can't see them? Where have they gone? And was this time machine pop up window spam? I opened my time machine and it was turned off?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path.

  • Any suggestions? Looking to clear my hard drive prior to donating my iMac.

I'm ready to donate the old purple iMac that is too slow for even the youngest in the family, and I've heard that you should clear any identifying information/passwords/account #'s etc. so that someone else can't tap into them and steal our identity. I tried to use the start-up disc, but my CD drive doesn't read CD's anymore. Any suggestions? Am I worried for nothing?
iMac   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

    Am I worried for nothing?
No, you are right. It is absolutely not a good idea to give away a computer without having erased the hard disk first. Merely emptying the Trash is not enough.
I tried to use the start-up disc
That would have been the best method. Does the disc look OK? Do you hear anything from the drive? Perhaps you could try again. Start with the CD in the CD-ROM drive. Press the C key at startup. Locate and launch the Drive Setup utility on the CD. Select the hard drive. Choose Initialization Options from the Functions menu. Check Zero all data. Initialise. Reinstall an operating system.
    Any suggestions?
If the computer can access the Internet, you may want to try a freeware program called Burn 2.5 (try a Google search). Decode the downloaded file. Alternatively, you could download on another computer, and carry out a transfer via Ethernet or a USB flash drive. If everything seems to be OK, move all files on the hard disk (except the System Folder and the Burn program) to the Trash. Then, open the Preferences folder (inside the System Folder) and move all files there to the Trash. Look for any other application-related folders with personal files in the System Folder; move the files to the Trash. You can in fact throw away many items in the System Folder; the main thing is that the computer still runs for the subsequent steps. Empty the Trash (the Special menu). Finally, launch the Burn program, and choose to Erase Free Space (you can set a higher level of security by changing the number of passes et cetera under Preferences). Please note that this method will erase all applications from the hard disk. Unless the CD-ROM drive can be made to work, the next user will face some difficulties with new installations.

  • Trying to clear a hard drive and clicking doesn't work

Am trying to clear an 1999 strawberry iMac hard drive for someone before sell or dispose of it. It is running OS 9.
The computer has not been turned on for 11 months. It will boot and the mouse cursor will move around the screen. If I double click on the hard drive icon, nothing happens. If a dialog pops up that has an accept that is return sensitive, that will work. So it not the mouse or keyboard.
The menu line nor any dialogs are clickable or openable.
I get a network time error dialog saying that the Mac clock is set to a year before 1973 and need to manually reset the date and time control panel (which I can't open). The clock on the menu bar says it is a Monday morning time.
I have booted hold down return and nothing is clickable.
I zapped pram with no effect.
Would a bad battery let it boot but not operate?
Short of tearing open the iMac and sledging the hard drive, any other options? A family might want to have an inexpensive but old computer for a child (once I take off the person's data files). I have to clear or destroy the hard drive if it is junked.

I replaced the battery and the problem was still there. After a few minutes the computer shut down and nothing since.
To clear the data on the hard drive, I opened the drive and bent the crap out of the discs. The computer is headed for recycle

  • HT4527 I just had to clear the hard drive on my computer - now I want to transfer all the music and pictures from my ipad back onto my computer.  'Sync' doesn't do it.  What do I do?

I had toclear the hard drive of my computer and reinstall Windows 7.  Now I want to transfer all the music and photos from my iPad back onto my computer.  I authorized the computer (it is the ONLY computer authorized on this account - and this is the ONLY account on this iPad).  ITunes then downloaded my purchases...or at least it tried - out of the hundreds of tracks I have purchased, it managed one album that I bought over a year ago and NOTHING else.  So I tried to Sync - since on older versions of iTunes (that were SO MUCH MORE user friendly) that would do the job -transferring things that were only on the iPad onto the computer and vice versa.  It doesn't do that anymore.  So I went from my iPad's summary to the Music tab - the box for Music was not checked but when I checked it said the only thing it could do was erase EVERYTHING from my iPad and replace it with what was on my computer (that ONE album).  What is going on?
Why hasn't iTunes downloaded my other purchases since I authorized the computer? (there are over 3,000 tracks...not 18)
How can I download my iPad to my computer?

-Me again - it also won't upload the few new pictures I have on the computer onto the iPad without deleting all the photos that are already there....

  • How can I clear my hard drive, and still keep lion?

I really don't want to have to buy OS X Lion again, and I really need to erase my hard drive...is there a way that I can accomplish both? I cannot find the files to create a bootable hard drive or DVD, where are they supposed to be? Thanks

Is there a way to have lion, and sell the computer to someone so they dont have to buy it when they get it? I need to erase my harddrive, but I'd like the buyer to be running lion when they get it.
No that is a violation of the Lion License agreement. When you sell a Mac that has had Lion installed on it the new owner has to buy their own license of Lion. The reason being is the license of Lion you purchased is tied to YOUR AppleID!
If you have promised the buyer the machine would come with Lion then you will need to refund them $29.99 which is the cost of Lion. In addition if you sell the machine with any application software you must surrender the original DVD's and/or license keys for that software so the new owner isn't stealing the software.

  • How do I clear my hard drive?

I want to clean off my hard drive before selling. How do I make this happen?

Boot your Mac mini from the original installation CD/DVD and as part of the options where it asks you where you want to install the new operating system change it to "Erase and install".
If you really want to be paranoid, as soon as you have access to the menus open Disk Utility and erase the drive there with a write of zeros a number of times.

  • Archiving movie files to clear up hard drive space...how?

    Hello,
I have noticed that my hard drive space is significantly reduced by the movies, slideshows, idvd's etc. that I have created.
I have about 100GB of files to archive and I am asking what is the best and quickest way to do this?
I would prefer to backup the files onto a DVD that I can reload onto a mac later on if I need to. I could make a dvd that is playable in any dvd player but I'd like a data backup that I can load and edit at anytime.
Is this possible and how do I do this?

    a single-layered dvd-r fits 4.7GB... <math> ~22 DVDs.... phphewww...-
plus, most iM projects are much larger than to fit on one dvd...- you need a 3rd party Tool as toast7, which allows socalled spanning (=automatic segmenting and, much more important: rejoining these segments to one, single file...)...
how about investing into any external firewire harddrive, ~200Gigs are for <150€ (some offer<100€)... reliable, fast, convenient (drag'n drop).
don't forget to format with DiskUtility as MacOsExtended/hfs BEFORE usage
I do have 3 (4?) ext. hds here in use, just for my homevideos in edit, websites under construction, backups (4600 titles in iT... I don't want to rip all my CDs never again again!!), etc....

  • Clearing My Hard Drive

I am going to be selling my old iBook G4, since I have the new Mac Book, and I wanted to clean out my hard-drive. NOW... here is the problem... the Combo Drive on my iBook is dead. I know I know, I won't get a lot of money for it, but I figure I can sell it for parts or something. Anyway, do you guys have any recommendations as to how I can completely wipe out the hard-drive without running the disk installer? I researched this earlier, and saw that's the way to do it. I have a feeling I'm going to have to take it to the Apple Store and have them do it there.
    Thank you all in advance.

If you've got another Mac with a Firewire drive, you can put the Installer DVD in its drive and start it up in Target Mode.
    1. Connect both Macs with a Firewire-to-Firewire cable.
    2. Put the Install DVD in the Mac with the good drive.
    3. Restart that same Mac (w/ the DVD), holding down the "T" key during reboot.
    4. The Mac with the Install DVD should mount as a removable drive on the desktop of the iBook. Double-click the drive icon to open it.
    5. Manuever through the folders until you find the Install DVD.
    6. When you run the Install DVDs erase functions, make sure you have the iBook selected.
