Clear recent items is broken in 10.8 (major privacy issue!)

Clearing recent items is now completely broken under Mountain Lion.
Try this experiment:
1. Open an image in Preview.app.
2. File > Open Recent > Clear Menu
So is it gone now? No!!! They are not gone. You can still see what somebody previous viewed in that app by going to one of 2 places:
1. Right-click the app's icon in the Dock and recent items are ALWAYS there, never cleared.
2. Use Mission Control to view Application Windows and you still see recent items at the bottom of your screen.
Previously in Lion, this occured, but there was a workaround that involved clearing recent items, quitting the app, then relaunching the app, then the recent stuff wouldn't be visible anywhere. This workaround no longer works.
If you need to be guarenteed privacy with certain images like confidential bussiness documents, any embaressing photos or dirty pictures, do NOT upgrade to Mountain Lion because it will show those to anyone who happens to be nearby when you use Expose / Mission Control and you will not be able to work around it anymore.
If by chance this is not a bug and was intended behavior, tell Apple to stop it (or find yourself a new operating sytem that doesn't violate privacy.)

First, in response to Adrian Clarke's suggesetion of clearing the system-wide recents and that didn't work for me, but thanks.
Regardless, I think I found a permenant solution for Preview (but not TextEdit).
1. Go into ~/Library/Preferences
2. Search the folder for the phrase "Preview"
3. The first time I did the search, I found 3 or 4 things related to Apple's Preview application. I deleted them all.
4. Go to Terminal and type "killall Dock"
NOTE: Under Mountain Lion it appears (to me at least) the old "killall Dock" command does not always make the Dock relaunch automatically as it did in previous versions of OS X, so you might have to logout/login as well.
Going back to look at them again hours later, not all the files have rebounded or been recreated. So I can't tell you all their names exactly. I can only tell you the names of the files that get remade, which again isn't all the files that I deleted.
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList .plist
Again, the paths of the other files are lost since I didn't note them before deleting them, but just search your Preferences folder for "Preview".
Now TextEdit was exhibiting the same undesierable behavior as well, so I tried doing the same for TextEdit: Search preferences and deleting anything related to it.
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.LSSharedFileList.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist.L2YUl2h
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist.lockfile
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileLis t.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileLis t.plist.lockfile
After deleting them all and using TextEdit for a bit, the only files that rebounded were:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.LSSharedFileList.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileLis t.plist
But does it work on TextEdit? Sorta but not really. It works until you perform a reboot, then the old problem returns, afflicting TextEdit again. But Preview continues to behave correctly after a reboot. Why these results are so inconsitent is truly confusing. I suspect there's a bug (or multiple bugs). If anybody can offer a solution for TextEdit, I'd be very appreciative. In the meantime, if this bug affects you, maybe consider switching from TextEdit to another app until this gets fixed.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• Clear Recent Items from the Dock

When I right click on Preview on the Dock, it shows a list of recently opened files. A friend of mine needs to remove those for some reason..... He tried clicking File>Recent Items>Clear Menu and clicking the Apple Icon>Recent Items>Clear Menu and restarting Preview. This removes Recent Items from the Menu Bar but not from the Dock. Another problem is the last picture that thats open appears when Preview is started. Is it possible to disable this or preferably the entire "Resume" feature of Lion?

This also happened to me and I was going crazy because the items might of been deleted or from a DVD that is no longer mounted. So this is how I solved it.
To summarize, you need to delete or rename some files in your local "Library" directory, ie ~/Library/Preferences directory.
For the iWork apps and Preview. Rename these following files with a "~" in the beginning or delete it or to be safe, copy to another location:
"com.apple.iWork.Keynote.LSSharedFileList.plist" to "~com.apple.iWork.Keynote.LSSharedFileList.plist"
do the same for these files
com.apple.iWork.Numbers.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.iWork.Pages.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
One way to do it through the GUI is open finder, go to the "Go" menu and press the "option" button.
Choose the Library menu item and open the "Preferences" directory.
Look for the files mentioned above either rename, delete, or move.
Close the application and see if the recent items still appear when you right mouse click the icon in the Dock.
If that doesn't work, then logout and log back in.
Hope this helps or solves your issue.
I just used this to delete the recenttly opened items on Quicktime that appeared on the dock even though the 'Recently Opened' folder frm the Menu was empty. It worked like a charm.
Now I still need to quit the Application after deleting the 'Recently Opened' on the Menu bar in order to make the dock recently opened disappear as well, but it works!

• How do I clear recent items from Preview in Lion?

I hate this new version of Preview, the screensaver won't loop, you can't clear the recent images... It is piece of crap software! Go back to Snow Leopard version please!!!

I agree with you guys this is a really irritating feature, can we please revert to the former versions mode of operation or have the option to select it.
Same goes for other apps. If Windoze can give the option to select "classic" Windoze why doesnt Apple provide the same for its clients?

• Clearing recently opened files

How does one clear an application's recently opened files when control-clicking on an application? Clicking on the mac at the top left corner and clearing recently items only clears that menu, there still remains individual menus for say, preview or quicktime, that I wish to clear and I can't seem to find a way to. Cheers.

It would be located in a directory with a path similar to the one below, replacing "ric" with your windows username.
C:\Documents and Settings\ric\Application Data\JDeveloper\system11.1.1.0.22.47.32\o.ide
--Ric

• Customise the Recent Items submenu?

Yes, I realise you can choose how many items you want displayed in these menus. But I'd like to go further. I'd like to list the documents first and I'd like to see them in order of when I opened them last, as most applications list them. I don't suppose this is possible just with the options in the Finder.
So is there an app that will allow me to do that? Or failing that, a hack using Terminal? I want loads of items in the menu but I don't want to have to wait for the most useful part of it to load and scrolling down to it past all the applications, which have easier methods of quick retrieval.
In the old days of OS9 I used to put links to the recent items folders, arranged by date modified, into popup folder tabs at the bottom of my screen. It was incredibly useful. I'm still waiting for something similar, fourteen years later!

I was looking at this again, a couple of hours ago and could not find a direct way, but tried the following and it worked:
Open "User Preferences" and set the # of Recent Items to 1 ( a 0 setting is not possible ).
This will leave the last item used in the list. Click any item in your new project to overwrite the last item. Slug or Bars will do if you haven't started importing yet. Reset # of Recent items to whatever you usually use.
Yes, it is convoluted and a simple "Clear Recent Items" button would do the job. But it's all we have for now. Maybe in the next version.

• How to clear recents on menu items?

When I right click on menu items, such as on pages or numbers, how can I clear recents for that menu?

Hey, rskern, thought I'd just share the solution I finally discovered while posting on another thread about this issue. This worked for me, at least in Mountain Lion:
If you clear the offending application from the Dock, as in drag it out of the dock, it seems to clear whatever weird cache is kept there. If you then reopen the app, and drag it in the dock so it stays there, it will update dynamically again, so when you use the "Clear Recents" menubar item, it will clear it in the Dock's menu (and Mission Control) too, even while the app is still open. Again, I just found this, so I don't know how long it'll take before that Dock menu seems to "get stuck" again, but it seems to clear it at least temporarily when you do that.
Hope this helps!

• App to completely clear all History (Recent Items and Folders)

It easy to clear the Recent Items list in the Apple Menu and also the Recent Folders in the Finder.
What is a good Snow Leopard app that will do both and all the clean-up for you, totally erase history on all fronts?
Thanks.

I don't see as you would need an app for that. Just go to Recent Items and select Clear Menu. For folders do the same, Go>Recent Folders>Clear Menu. How simple is that?
I prefer one that will completely vanish all footprints on all fronts in one stroke including Internet history, Open Recent items list in apps and every possible traces of recent activities using only one client.

• Recent items are missing when I do a four finger expose swipe or two finger tap on icon

Hi,
I used to be able to do a four finger down swipe when in an app which would show any app windows open plus recent items underneath. I'm currently getting the windows showing but no recent items. This goes for any app. I haven't changed anything. I haven't cleared the list either. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hello Toraishikuru,
That feature you are describing is called Spaces. What the does is help you organize your workflow. For instance, my workflow is that have Safari in one space and then I have Mail in another so that they are not on top of each other. If you want to remove spaces that you are not using, then open Mission Control and you will see a section towards the top, move you mouse over one of them and click on the X that shows up in the right hand corner of that window. Take a look at the article below for more information.

• "clear recent history" is not lit up, can't activate; I have an extra blank line under all these editing icons which I do not want?????Yahoo says it is your issue; also when I copy for instance a screenshot (see below)

1)trying to clear cache: when I click tools, options, "clear recent history" is not lit, I do not know what else to say. I tried to copy the screenshot sample, but it wouldn't let me.
2) On a page: the items appear in this order -
a)Header line:Firefox symbol Ask question or whatever I am seeking
b)2nd line: the words: File, Edit, View, etc.
c) 3rd line:arrows then 7 icons for editing which appeared one day, a small window that tells where I am with a star and then a window with
google's symbol and a small window with a magnifying glass.
d)4th line: a wide empty line
e)5th line: a small window telling what I am doing ie Ask a Question etc. then a plus sign in a gray box and then nothing follows.
Yahoo says that the blank line and the icons are Firefox's issue.
I never chose to have icons for editing instead of the words. I do not know how they got there. I had some problems for a number of weeks (1/4/11 to 2/5/11 because all of the 2nd line had disappeared and I had no bookmarks. Yahoo was completely ineffective and I got disparate yesterday and started click all over the screen and suddenly the words of that line appeared again as well as all my bookmarks were back.?????odd. So all this maybe related. I just would rather not have that blank line as it lowers my screen.
3) cont'd: to my desktop I cannot retrieve from my desktop. I click to open it and the page opens, but it keeps opening and opening and on and on and won't stop, so I have to close the tab and sign in again. This has happened about ten times recently. I guess that is it.

• Is this normal to find Servers in "Recent Items"?

While I have been trying to save data on a crashed computer – the Desktop has disappeared and the Finder can't be found – I found something I have never noticed before.
On the menu at the top of the screen, when I click on "Recent Items" I find "Servers". Under "Servers", I find two blue colored drives called "Scan" and "SharedDocs".
I am doing file sharing at the moment but I don't use the names "Scan" or "SharedDocs".
Before my Desktop disappeared and the hard drive got corrupted, I wasn't doing any file sharing. All I was doing was backing up my computer. The backup failed though because the external drive got disconnected from the computer when the lid of the Macbook Air suddenly opened to 180 degrees (the hinge is broken).
I restarted the computer and attempted to backup the computer again but that failed and then the hard drive filled up all of a sudden. I did Disk Repair using the installation disc but that was when the Desktop and Finder disappeared. This is to give some background to what happened. I don't think anyone is spying on me but I don't remember seeing the Servers before under "Recent Items". Maybe they have been there all along but I haven't noticed them.

If I can help set your mind at rest, this is normal. If you look in the Finder preferences (if you can find them -- see below) they are fourth in the list of items to show on the desktop, and I would guess that this may be related.
The names you are seeing my be partitions on the disks you have been connecting to.
It sounds as if you have major disk corruption and the fact that it filled up suddenly suggests the Finder was unable to report the data correctly. If you have the data off (backed up) then you will lose nothing by trying to erase and then reinstalling the OS. If there are any problems during that process, it would indicate a defective hard disk and replacement is the best option.

• Why does my "recent items" show recent applications in duplicate?

Why does this happen?
Just applications show up in duplicate, not recent documents. All I can do is to clear the recent items list. I'm not sure when this development began, and I can't bring it on at will either.

I was revisiting this situation again and explored into one of the Links that "Limnos"
posted, namely, "X Lab Resetting Launch Services".
Thanks-Limnos.
It suggested:
1. Use a third-party utility, such as Cocktail or Yasu, to rebuild or reset, respectively, the Launch Services database. Be sure to employ a version of the utility that is compatible with the version of Mac OS X you are using.
OR
2. Reset Launch Services manually: follow the steps in the order specified for the version of Mac OS X you are using.
I tried the easy way out.
I have had "Cocktail" for a long time (v. 4.4-current for Tiger 10.4.11) and let it rebuild the Launch Services database.
Then after a restart The problem seemed to be cured.
Cleaned it all up nicely
So far so good.
No duplicates at all.
I was afraid I would have to re-associate everything in my system all over again, but no, it seems to be behaving nicely.
I'll re-post if the problem re-occures , thanks.
