Clear the"air" Mini in 5Ghz only network (stock hardware)

I recent configured my network to 8012.11n only (5 Ghz) Given the Macbook Air, Mac Pro and Lenovo T60 were all equipped with 802.11n cards. however I also have an older Mac Mini 1.83 Ghz system that I believe has a b/g network card. I figured I would just find another method to connect the mini to the network.
To my surprise though the mini can find and connect to my network. Now speeds ate slow (about 54 Mbps) but it is connecting. I thought maybe it fell back to 802.11a but I'm stiff confused why this is happening.
Can someone explain this to me? thanks.

I was digging around, and I found the wireless chipset Apple used is the Atheros AR5006x.
Take a look at it's press release here
What do you see?
Quote:The chip integrates an entire 802.11a/b/g solution -- Media Access Controller (MAC), baseband processor, and a high-performance radio with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz capabilities
Yes, it does contains a 5 GHz radio. But how do I fully enable it? I can see the 5 GHz band only on my network list, but when when I select the network, nothing happens....
What security settings are you using?

  • I can't see my 802.11n, 5ghz-only network on XP SP2

    Hello everybody,
    here's the problem:
I can't see a 5GHz-only network on Windows XP SP2 with Boot Camp's drivers. The Atheros 5008 Wireless Network Adapter built inside my Macbook is well known for being capable of managing "n-draft" networks.
The XP's installed driver, the one provided by Boot Camp, actually is the latest available.
Obviously I don't have the smallest problem on Mac OS 10.5.2, so why the Atheros 5008 Wireless Network Adapter shouldn't work on Windows XP SP2 when its driver can handle 5 GHz band?
    Here's the proof:
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/NETWORK-CARD/OTHER-NETWORK-CARDS/Atheros-AR5008 -Series-Driver-60394.shtml
Everything is ok with "g" or "b" network (created or not by Airport, as I can see the entire neighbourhood's networks), so the connection goes fine.
I did the Microsoft's mid-2007 hotfix for WPA2 encryption too as suggested by Apple to Boot Camp 1.2 users. Nothing got better.
I've spent hours on the internet looking for people experiencing this very issue, without success: could you please help me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Luca

My MacBook is a Spring '07 model as well. I remember, when I got it, it only supported b/g. Then Apple offered up an update to n, through software update. I wonder if this update only works for OS X (Tiger or Leo shouldn't matter if it was a firmware update).
Just offering up my thoughts. Anyone else?

  • 802.11n (5Ghz only) network and Remote App.

I have a Time Capsule set up 802.11n (5Ghz only). iMac, MacBook & New Airport Express all connected to its network. Transmit rate is 270.
My question is, if my iPod Touch is g rated only, then how can the Remote App control my Airtunes if it cannot connect to my N network. Because it is.

    My Time Capsule
    Wireless Mode=Create a wireless network
    Radio Mode=802.11n only (5GHz)
My Time Capsule is connected to my Netgear (g only) router via ethernet.
I have the router broadcasting a g network for my iPod Touch. The Macs & AAE or all connected wirelessly to my Time Capsule N-only Network.
So the Touch should not be able to connect to my Airport Express as I understand it.

  • Does the iPad mini retina wifi only come with GPS?

I want to use the wifi mini retina with Garmin Pilot, an aviation app. Does the wifi only version come with GPS installed or do I have to get a 4G/LTE version?

You need the 4G/LTE version. The WiFi version does not have GPS.

  • Why is the AEXn Range @ pure 5GHz only 30 feet?

I recently went through the hassle of upgrading to wireless N twice - the first time not realizing the problems present in 2.4GHz channel bonding. After realizing this and upgrading all my hardware to 5GHz compliant hardware including the AEXn Gigabit Edition, I was pretty happy that I got 5GHz and 300Mbps connections.
However, I've always seen that N is touted as a faster and farther range alternative. However, in a space where there are no walls, my 5GHz signal range is only about 30 feet. After that, it drops off sharply - even more so when I move slowly up the stairs. Once I reach the top of my stairs, the signal is gone.
On 2.4GHz N only mode, I get range all over the house and consistently achieve a 13 to 30Mbps in the farthest reach of the house at well over 200 feet through walls and such. While within decent range of 50 feet or less, I achieve the maximum 130Mbps for 2.4GHz. Why is the signal degredation so ridiculously high when using 5GHz? I was trying to find the power output for the 5GHz antenna but have been unable to find it. Alternatively, is there a way to mod the AEXn to transmit both 5GHz and 2.4GHz simultaneously? Or is that a hardware limitation that cannot be adjusted?
As a side note, I've eliminated all 5GHz handsets and cell phones from the house while running my tests. In addition, I have also replaced all our house phones with 1.9GHz phones with the only 2.4GHz device being a baby monitor, which is off most of the time. There is also about 500 feet from my router to neighbors on both sides of my house - so it's hard to picture them causing 5GHz interference. any suggestions?

I pretty much have the same experience. To get 5GHz channel service on my third floor I had to "extend the network" with a second AEBSn, which drops the effective rate from 300 to 108. Still better than 54, but not as good as 300. On the first floor get 300.

  • I purchased the ipad mini wifi+cellular for att but i'm afraid that when i travel to egypt( i do it frequently) i won't be able to use cellular there, can i insert a local nano sim from egypt for a 3G network or GSM/Edge (Not LTE)?

Does the ipad mini Support Global 3G networks (Egypt's GSM band 900/1800 and 3G is 2100)?

Thanks James. I was hoping that was the case.
I've already updated the software, from a quick search that seems to be the network issue for imessage/FaceTime. Is there a fix for this? Ive no back up to go back to.

  • I am trying to play my digital music off a hard drive onto my home stereo.  I would like to know if the mac mini can just hook to my processor and play music through the processor(preamp) on my home stereo speakers?

I currently have a nice home stereo component system.  I also have a 500 GB external hard drive loaded with music.  I am looking for a way to play the music off this Hard Drive onto my home stereo system.  I currently have a WD home entertainment box that I can play movies that I download off the Internet on my TV, of course piped through my home stereo for the sound.  I would like to know if the mac-mini could be used in this form also.  Just have the HD hooked to it, the TV would become my monitor and the mac mini would play the music ... RANDOMLY ... with the use of iTunes.  This of course would be hooked up to the home system with an hdmi cable and the HD hooked up through a USB connection.
Just would like to know if this could work?

    Yes. Is the short answer.
You can directly connect the speaker out port of the Mac mini to an input on the AV Receiver which then feeds your speakers. This would be an audio only solution. If you use a TOS-Link connection this will be a pure digital connection ensuring the best quality (important for audiophiles).
You can if you wish connect the video from the Mac mini to the AV Receiver, and if you have a Mac mini with HDMI or a Mini Displayport you can run the audio and video via a single cable. (Older models would use two cables, the aforementioned TOS-Link pus a DVI to HDMI cable.)
If you do connect the video output from the Mac to the AV Receiver you can then display this on your TV, and have as one possibility iTunes displayed with perhaps one of the iTunes visualisers playing along with the music. Another possibility would be to use FrontRow on the Mac.
A different approach would be to have the Mac mini stream over a network to a device e.g. the Sonos Zoneplayer which is then connected to the AV Receiver. An AirPort Express is also able to do this.

In Firefox 4.0 beta 1, cannot drag a favicon to the bookmarks toolbar, then open "Properties" and clear the "Name" text so that only the favicon is displayed--it defaults to favicon + web address. This trick allowed me to fit in more favicons on the toolbar in previous versions of Firefox.

  • Mac Mini with Air Port & Mac Mini w/no Air Port - how do I network them?

I want to put in a wireless network so that my two Mac Minis can both access the internet. One Mac Mini (2007) has an airport built in - the other does not. I purchased an Air POrt station but doesn't seem to work with the Mini that has no Airport built in. Should I use a Router?

Can I connect my Mini with no Air Port to the new Airport Station and then connect the Airport station to my DSL Modem? That would the leave my other Mini with Airport free to connect wirelessly through the Air Port Station - correct?
Yes, that is correct. There are a number of different Airport base stations you could have, but unless it is an Airport Express (slightly larger than a cigarette packet in size) it will have a WAN port (which connects to the DSL modem) and at least one LAN port (to which you can connect a computer with a suitable ethernet 'patch' cable). The latest Airport Extreme base station has three LAN ports, you can use any of them.
If you have the Airport Express base station, it only has ONE ethernet connection, so it can't be used to connect upstream to the modem and downstream to the computer at the same time. However, you could then try your Buffalo wifi base station instead - it may not state that it is Mac compatible, but as long as it meets the standards laid down for wifi, it should work just fine.
I thought my Older Mini had to have the Air Port card installed in order to connect at all to the Station.
No, it only need an airport card inside for wifi connection. The ethernet port on the back works with or without airport installed.
I thought I tried this and it didn't work but perhaps I did it wrong.
Without familiarity with these devices and systems, it's very easy to 'get it wrong'... and very hard to figure out what the problem is! Reading the manual for the base station will help you, as will looking at the sort of article Neil linked to earlier.
If you connect everything up and it doesn't work, post back with details of how you have connected things, how you have configured them, and what is happening - the more detail the better since small things can make a big difference in whether networks work or not!!

  • How does the MacBook air 1.7ghz processor compare to the MacBook Pro 2.5ghz processor?

    Hello Hello!
I'm a soon to be Information Science major (similar to computer science) and am in the market for a laptop that will last me at least 3-4 years. I'm trying to be as cost effective as possible while still having a configuration that will get me through my college years. I've been looking at either the 11" MacBook Air upgraded to 8gb of ram and the 1.7ghz i7 processor OR the baseline MacBook Pro with the 2.5ghz i5 processor upgraded to 8gb of ram.
I'm leaning towards the MacBook Air because of the ssd and battery life, as well as the form factor. My only worry is that the processor won't be powerful enough to meet my needs as an information science major. I know I'll be learning programming and web development, among other things. I guess to sum up my question, will the 1.7ghz MacBook Air be powerful enough to use as a main machine as a student in this field?
Screen size isn't a problem as I own a decent 20" monitor that I can use whenever I'm at my desk.
    Any feedback is much appreciated!

Noticeably greater? Probably not. I have a MBP that I upgraded to 16 GB and a SSD and my MacBook Air seems at least as fast even though its CPU is slower and it has much less memory. They are both i7 models.
It depends on exactly what you're planning to do with it, for example image manipulation will be faster on the MBP with its dedicated GPU (15" model only though), but for software development and debugging you are not likely going to notice much difference. These Macs are so fast that comparing minute differences isn't worth the effort. Comparing them on the basis of weight and portability is a better idea. The MBA is lighter, but the MBP is expandable... so the choice is likely to be more subjective than quantitative.
We don't know what any future MBP changes will be implemented. Apple's product evolution is pointing in a direction away from expandability, and it's pretty clear disk drives (both optical and HD) are on the way out. If those considerations matter to you waiting for a future upgrade may not work in your favor.
