Clearer capture preview window?

I would like to send a feed from my video mixer into final cut and use the capture preview window in final cut as my preview monitor. the problem is that the capture preview is staggered. Is there a way to get a higher quality capture preview?

Not sure if this will help, but instead of digitizing in FCP, try digitizing in Quicktime instead - Quicktime>File>New Movie Recording. You can set the codec in the preferences and the window seems to exhibit less artifacts than the capture window in FCP.
Once you are done, just import the quicktime you've made into FCP.

No Audio in Capture Preview Window

I don't have any audio while watching videos in the capture window BEFORE capturing them. I understand that FCE doesn't have audio DURING capture and the audio is there after it's captured, but I can't tell which video takes to capture without hearing the audio first before logging them for capture. When using FCP on my G5 I am able to hear the audio from the tapes prior to logging. Please advise. Thanks.

Capture preview window question.

With FCP 4.5 When you were capturing something you could switch to another program like after effects and all of Final cuts windows would be covered by the After Effects or whatever program you open. Now with FCP 5.0 The capture window is on top of everything. Is there a work around? This is a major slowdown to my workflow.

Is there a way to capture video of what you do in preview window

i find it fascinating to toggle rapidly forth on a scene in the preview window.
is there any way that i could capture this rapid backwards and forwards movement on video?

If you upgrade to iLife 09, you can have fast motion, slow motion, reverse motion without any third party tools. [See this link for a screenshot and description|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html#clip%20adjustments]
You could also use a screen capture application like Snapz Pro X, or similar.

Possible bug: After using page setup in print preview it clears the preview screen and locks up the window (no visible widgets). I have to close the window from the title bar and start the print over.

On any page, select "Print->Print Preview". Once in the preview window, use the menu to select "Print->Page Setup". In the setup dialog box, click on the "Margins & Header/Footer". Modify some headers and footers. Then click on OK.
The preview window will either be cleared or become unresponsive. The only way to proceed is to close the preview window using the Windows close button in the top right hand corner. I must then start my printing over.
I found that I can work around this by first changing the page setup BEFORE going to print preview. However, this looks like a bug and it should be investigated and fixed.

Preview window disabled when capturing FCP

A message comes up in the preview window saying 'preview disabled' even though the vtr os connected properly and can upload video: how do I enable it?

I use a XM-2. That is the European/PAL version of your camera. I have had this problem since a year. I use a LaCie external 500 GB drive. Sometimes I could work around the problem using the internal drive. But now I think I have solved the problem. At least for me. There are two problems. First see to that you only have Quick Time 7 and not anything left from previuos versions. Look in the Receipts folder where you can find traces of old versions. (There is Apple message about this somewhere). Then shut down the computer, not restart, shut it down completly. Shut down the camcorder. Wait a minut or two so everything is quiet. Then start the camcorder. Wait for a while and then start the computer. When everything is up and running start FCE and hopfully you will not see the message Preview Disabled.

the posting I was trying a screen capture software. Maybe the
settings there? I'll try it later.

Preview window

This is my first post so bear with me.
I use a HP8500 and run windows 7 and have Print Preview set to on.
It works very well but occassionally while waiting for the preview window to pop up I do something else and then the window disappears and I can't get it back. It's not behind any other windows and it's not an application so I can't kill it.
The printer thinks its printing but is really waiting for a click in the Preview window which I can't see.
When this happens the print files sit in the queue and even rebooting and turning the printer on and off doesn't clear the problem.
I've had to stop the spooler and delete the files but sometimes the printer is still "printing" and it takes a long time to get back to printing.
Is there a better way ?

Preview window gone

When I open preview the window never appears. The Preview menu is present. the four-finger swipe down will show me all the files I have opened previously. But when I select one, nothing happens. Every now and again, I can get a document to open but generally I give up. This has been going on for a while.
Anyone have any ideas?
I've tried menu file>open , option-click - file open with in finder, I've tried pdf documents etc.
The other thing that has been bugging me is the inability to close files. When I do actually get a preview window to display, the side bar includes a variety of files I have opened previously. Actually, I think it has kept every last file I have ever opened in preview....disconcerting actually.

I've been messing with this for hours now. I've tried many renaming, deleting plist files related to preview in various folders
(for example: ~Library/Containers ; ~Library/preferences; _Library/ApplicationSavedStates)
Also tried clear recent files, removed from dock etc.
Results have been the same, open a document (specific text file created today using automator) and every file I have ever previewed with "Preview" opens.
Number of windows depends on preview preferences selected (open group of files in one window or single window for each files.) You can imagine the horror, when the latter preference selected and "all" previous previewed files open!
Something is definitely wrong. I have long since trashed many of those files (and emptied trash as well.) Well over 82 files!!!!
I quit preview and then selected it from the dock - no window just preview toolbar appeared. File>open said text file. Result = Same...82 files open...

Premiere CS5 will not render video with titles on the fly in preview window

I am trying to use CS5 and notice if I add a title to the timeline overlapping any video and then attempt to play the video as soon as it hits the part with the title the video stops playing in the preview window. The background sound keeps going but video play back stops. In premiere CS4 it would render titles on the fly no problem. Why wont it do it in CS5? I should not have to render the timeline it should do at least a rough realtime playback without a full render. In CS4 it would play any and all effects on the fly depending on the resolution and the performence would vary depending on how many and what effects and transitions were applied to the clips but its very useful to get a quick idea how it will look. If I scrub, the titles playback while scrubbing no problem its only with actual playback it happens. Other effects and transitions I apply seem to render on the fly and play back in the preview window ok, it only seems to be the titles having the issues.
Any ideas?

Usualy capture video from a canon HV30 using Cineform Neoscene capture software, this is 1440x1080 HD 24p clips. (issue with the titles happens on any imported video in any format though, even with no clips but on a matt background)

I want to use the built in premiere title function to place titles along with fades and what not and then play back clips in the preview windows with the titles applied rendering on the fly. This works perfectly in CS4, just not in CS5. When I try it in CS5 after you hit the play button it will play the clip but as soon as you get to the part of the clip where the title is the video playback will freeze, mind you the clip is still playing in the sense that audio is still going just the video playback stops in the preview window. As a note if you scrub the video on the timeline the video clips will display with the titles applied it should, it is only when you hit the play button the problem happens.
I have tried adjusing the quality settings in the preview window, updated my gfx card drivers and system drivers along with directx. Premiere is updated. I have tested other effects and transitions and they display fine, including super imposures such as chroma key or ultra key. I have adjust playback settings not that there was much to adjust there.
I will say again in CS4 never had this issue, I am surprised to see it here.

Issues with displaying vision in preview window in FCP

Hello ALl,
I need some serious help. I have had to re-install all my mac software and now I am having issues when trying to capture and log vision. I am using FCP and my camera is a Sony 1080i HVR-Z1P. It was working fine with an older version of quicktime but now that I have downloaded QT 7.3.0 is seems to be having issues.
I can click on 'capture and log' and the preview window displays 'Preview Disabled' all features work the camera (play, rewind, fastforward) but the vision will not display.
I called mac support and was basically fobbed off by Sean (Canadian I think he was). Last time I had this issue was due to quicktime software update and spoke with a man who sounded Switz and he was a great help giving me an older version of quicktime to resolve my issue. So far I have tried un-installing quicktime many times which hasn't helped.
Any suggestions would be well received.

You can fix this by enabling "Always show scrollbar" under "General" in "System Preferences"

Playback in Preview window stops after about 1 second

Hi,
When I hit the spacebar to view the clip in the preview window, the playback stops after about one second each time. It goes smoothly, then after one second, it stops. I can however drag the slider across the time line and there seems to be no problems.
I'm sure I have a powerful enough computer, so I don't think it's something to do with ram (I have 6 gig ram, Vista, triple core processor, good graphics card... brand new computer bought yesterday)

I'm not sure what you mean... I am importing from a DV tape which was recorded onto by a MiniDV Camera. When I plug in the camera to my fire wire, Windows gives me the options of AVI and WMV format (I am not sure which one to go with by the way, but WMV format seems clearer and 5 times smaller too.. why is that?)
Any ideas?

Capture monitor window pixelated

When capturing SD footage via Firewire the capture monitor window has pixelated dropouts in a couple areas (usually the same places) during loading. This is a new dual quad core Dell precision machine nVidia,Quadro FX 5600, 1.5GB dual VGA or DVI, Graphics CardDell Precision T7400. Why would that drop out? Never did for years on my previous Dell dual processor machine which had a much lower power graphics card? Not a real problem, just looks terrible.

Just gave that a try with no success. Tried putting the capture window in either monitor and that did not change the effect. It's odd since the graphics card provides great performance in HDV playback, and multilayer previewing without rendering. Such a small thing, but annoying.
Anyone have any other thoughts? rg

Upgrade Problems - Worst is Choppy Capture Preview - Help!

I must have done an auto update recently because I'm having a whole bunch of problems with FCP since my last project. One of them is the "preview disabled" issue that a lot of people seem to be having. I did something to Quick Time, as suggested by this wonderful forum, and it seemed to help. I was also having dropped frames, so I just changed the settings rather than solving it the complicated way as suggested by this forum. That seems to help. But I have a final problem which I can't fix. Please help!
When I log and capture, the video I'm trying to capture appears choppy on the log and capture window. However, when I'm done capturing the clip and I look at it in the preview window, it seems to be fine. Many posts on this forum suggest that this isn't a big deal b/c you should worry only about how the final clip looks on an external monitor. But for me it's a problem because it makes editing very difficult. Plus, I'm worried that it will have other reprecussions that I'm not aware of at this moment.

If you are referring to the actual Capture Window inside FC, that shows you footage as you are capturing, it is what it is. Don't use that to monitor the quality of your footage as you capture. As you noted, that window really has nothing to do with the quality of the video coming into your puter.
Use your external video monitor/TV to judge the quality of the incoming video as you use it to monitor of the vid once in the puter

Capture Preview

I am using FCP 4.5HD with a Canon GL1 camera. Recently when I try to log and capture I can see no picture, it just says "preview disabled". I have had no problem before. The VTR is ok and I can see that the timecode counter is running, but I can't see any footage in the preview window. Any ideas how this can be fixed?

If I were you, I'd also hook up a video monitor to the deck or camcorder as you log and capture, as you edit and as you output. You will always be able to see your video there.
I rarely squint into the Log and Capture window as the Tab Key and Keyboard shortcuts make this a transparent interface for me. Better to rely upon your video monitor. Don't have one? Get one.
