Clearin data from my old G4 onto my new computer so I can donate it
How do I transfer all the data from my old G4 onto my new power mac? I want to donate the old one but wnat everything on it to be moved onto my new computer.
Is there a way to then clear the old one before donating it?
What model is your new Mac? Migration assistant is usually the standard means for going from one computer to another, but there are a few caveats.

It Copies your Home Directory onto the New Computer, so the new one will start up with all your old data in its rightful place.
Mail data transfers, Documents, Preferences, etc...stuff like that. It wont delete them from the old computer.

To clear the old drive you should boot to the installer disc and run Disk Utility. Erase the drive with write zeros once selected in the security options. This overwrites the data and makes it hard to recover without very special and costly drive analysis. You can write more than once but unless you have very secret data once should be enough. More times takes much, much longer and I believe the highest option might take days, depending upon the drive size.
Make sure you include the discs that came with the computer to the seller. They will need them to install the OS and for computer hardware testing. If you intend to give them a newer operating system you should give them the newer discs as well. Any operating system on the computer should come with a set of discs for licensing purposes and for use in repairing the drive should problems arise.

Tunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later. Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid. Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases. -
how do i get my songs and data from my old mac onto my pc so that i can copy it onto my new ipod touch

When I plugged in my new one it cleared all my song and apps out of my current itunes.
Are you sure of that? Check in the Library. Click on the Apps icon to see all apps. Similarly click on the Music icon to see the songs. -
A week or so ago, the screen on the Macbook Pro I've had for 5 years went permanently black. The screen itself still works, but it's just all black. Went from flickering/flashing to black. I didn't have any kind of warranty on it or anything, and in addition to all of the other things about it that needed fixing, it seemed like it'd just be cheaper to get a new Macbook Pro.
My question is: How do I get all the stuff from the old laptop to the new laptop without having to use the old laptop's display? Is there a cable I can use to connect the two, and I can just access the old one from the new one?FireWire between the two (get appropriate 800-800 or 400-800), Target Disk Mode on the old one, appears as an external disk on the new one. Drag everything over, or use Setup Assistant if first start of new one, or plain old Migration Assistant. You really don't need a display to see a prancing FireWire icon, do you?

(with the added advantage that since you ain't booting anything off the drive, can turn the Mac on or off at will without risking data corruption on the drive) -
I want to give my old iphone 4 to my daughter and need to get all her info from her old iphone 3 onto a new computer. The PC she synced with is dead and she does not want to loose all her contacts and music. How can I do this?
To effectively transfer ownership of the iPhone requires that it be "restored" as a new device.
... The PC she synced with is dead
The iPhone is not a backup device. Your computer backs up the iPhone, not the other way around. What you use to back up your computer is up to you - Macs use Time Machine. I assume PCs use something similar.
If her PC backup is dead you will have difficulty extracting content from the iPhone since it is not designed to work that way.
All her Apple purchases can easily be transferred to another iPhone. However, her contacts will be gone, as will any music or other contact obtained from sources other than Apple.
There are a number of third party utilities that claim to be able to extract content from an iPhone. See wjosten's procedure here:

I just got a brand new iPhone 4S on a contract from my local Three store. When I used the cloud restore to put the data from my old 3GS onto the device, it's prompting me for an Apple ID login with an email address (hotmail) that isn't mine! My old phone has NEVER had any Apple ID other than mine log into it, and the new one's a sealed box that I've opened and set up from scratch. Can anyone please explain this? I'm worried there's some kind of problem with my iCloud data being mixed with someone else's or something... Since I logged in with my own ID, it's downloaded the data perfectly fine, but I just got the Apple ID prompt again a moment ago with this same hotmail address in it... I'd be very grateful for any explanation!
In iTunes on your computer, select the Purchased section under STORE in the left column. Click on the first track and choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu.
In the "Summary" tab you'll see details of the purchaser of the track. Click Next to go through all your purchased music one by one until you find the ones you need to get rid of.
Unfortunately, there are no smart playlist rules that can filter tracks by the purchaser that I know of. -

I have burned numerous cd's onto my old computer. Many of these songs cannot be purchased on Itunes (Garth Brooks for example). My old computer died and now I can't transfer these songs from my ipod onto my new computer. How can I retreive my data?
What options do you have enabled from under your iPod's Summary and Music tabs for syncing preferences?

I just purchased a new iPad air and need to transfer the data from my old iPad to the new one. I have to return my old iPad to my company on Mon 2/17/14
Connect the old iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy your purchases off it and over to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, then take a backup of it (File > Devices > Back Up) and restore that backup onto the new iPad (restoring a backup onto a different device won't copy passwords, so you will need to enter your email account passwords, router password, and any passwords stored on Safari on your new iPad).

I would like to transfer all data from my iPod classic to my new computer with windows 8.1. My old computer's cpu died. Utilizing iTunes which only allows iTunes albums purchased at iTunes store. The cd's were loaded via iTunes originally.
Install disk drive from old computer in an external enclosure.
Then copy the complete iTunes library from the disk drive to the disk drive in the new computer. -

How can I migrate data from an old MBA to a new one without having access to the screen of the old one? The screen of the old MBA is damaged !
If your "older" MBA has a Thunderbolt port then it isn't that old. See Target Disk Mode about how it's used. Note that without a monitor you won't be able to tell from the screen when it has fully started, and if it succeeded in starting in TDM. If it did, then the hard drive should appear on the Desktop of your new computer. You can then access it to transfer your files. You can even use Migration Assistant or any backup utility to transfer data. Just don't try to transfer system files.

If I copy the Itunes folder from my old pc onto my new one in the music folder will I be able to sync just as if it were the old one? This is from a Widows Vista machine to Windows 7.
I suspect design rather than a bug, it's too useful. The behaviour seems to have been consistent for quite a long time on both Windows and Mac machines...
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library will be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another, or even between Windows & Mac computers, without breaking the links between the library and the media, and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?). Anything that isn't stored inside the media folder must stay put or be restored to precisely the same path on a new machine or iTunes won't know where to find it. Within the media folder the relative paths from the library to the media remain unchanged and iTunes can cope even when the absolute paths are updated.
Should your library not be in the usual layout I've written some general posts on how to make a split library portable or I can give specific instructions on request.
