Clearing Cache on Mac - Side Effects?

Hello again,
I'm on a Mac that was purchased by the University that I work for.  They've installed the Adobe Suite for me and when there are updates, I actually have to have them "push" them to me - which I've learned to live with.
I'm familiar with clearing the cache within each program themselves (and I've done that, and it helps a little).  But I'm curious about clearing the cache on my Mac completely.  The Adobe folder alone (in my ~/library/caches folder) has about 42gigs of stuff in it.
Does anyone know if this will affect any updates that were done to the programs?  I'm running the latest 2014 CC versions on the entire suite.   I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
Thanks!

    The operating system automatically clears most caches. Why do you think you need to take manual control of the caches?

    Yes. Always keep the default settings unless you have a specific reason not to.
    If you are a heavy user of Java programs or applets, you may need to clear the cache files after Java updates because the old caches may interfere.

  • Crashes on Mac side when running Win7 64 bit in bootcamp as VM in Parallels

    I got my MacBookPro mid April 2010. Microsoft store partitioned & set up bootcamp with Win7 64 bit. I then Purchased Parallels 5 & set it up using the bootcamp partition as the Virtual machine. Not knowing what I was doing at 1st, I accidentally created a 2nd VM the 1st time I tried to use it & didn't know how to get rid of it until a couple weeks ago.
    It was all working pretty well until about Feb 19 when I was at the office trying to take notes in Pages. I had just started when it started alternating between Pages, desktop & blue screen then pages quit. Same when I reopened pages so just shut down & an hr or so later was ok. Over a period of about a wk rapidly increasing # of crashes of Safari & Pages to where it was becoming hard to use. Went to Genius bar who told me to do archive & install after back up. Had to go research & buy back up HD & before I could back up it got so bad it wouldn't even boot. Apple care helped me do Archive & install over the phone. Much better but still problems. Fri he checked back & had me reset Safari & empty Safari & other caches. Then Parallels crashed. So shut down & booted into bootcamp. It was also messed up.
    Then remembered the old, if all else fails trick of shutting it down & leaving it for a bit to clear out the volatile memory. Came back & booted into bootcamp & opened Outlook etc. Ok. Then booted into Mac & then parallels & it was ok.
    But problems continued. Repaired preferences, etc. I also found out that i didn't have the latest build of Parallels 5 (from the Parallels user forums) even though the update process said I did. They seemed rather techie. I finally did figure out how to download & install the latest build of Parallels. Not sure if that helped or why the check update from the pull down menu acted like it was checking & then told me I had the latest one but mine was several builds older than the current 1.
    Along the way, I finally learned how to delete the duplicate VM & it worked better for awhile, but then was getting bad. I verified the disk in Disk utility & it stopped almost immediately & said it needed to be repaired. Genius bar did that.Erase & install was mentioned. then more crashes, more problems so again verified disk & it ran longer but again stopped & said repair needed. Went into Genius bar on 3-25 for erase & install. Got it back next day but I think maybe the genius (who I had asked to help set up bootcamp partition) restored more than just the users which is what the head genius had said was the only thing to restore. Not sure, but it appears my new settings are showing. & it appears that whatever was corrupted may have been restored as well, not sure. Made another appt for genius bar to help get things right.
    The tests that were run showed that the hardware was ok. Several people told me while this was going on that it was likely related to running Windows on a mac & especially as a VM, & then someone or 2 also mentioned that running in coherence mode could be an issue.
    This whole thing has been very frustrating & isn't what I expected after coming back to mac, but still needing to run windows for business software. My old macs never had problems. My brother said his macs are reliable & don't have problems.
    When it got so that I couldn't even boot on the mac side the 1st time, I was able to boot into bootcamp & had to do drag & drop backup of mac files to my windows external HD. But before & after that when Safari was crashing so much it wasn't very useful, I did better in IE running in Parallels.
    What I'm wondering is what might have caused this & more specifically, what can I do to avoid it happening again? A major reason that I use Parallels all the time is that I sync a windows mobile 6,5 phone with Outlook so its not very convenient to have to boot into bootcamp to check email.
    The fingers have been pointed at maybe the partition getting messed up but no real answers so far. So while I assume we will get it working ok again, I'm afraid the same thing could happen again. It was suggested that it may have been doing little things kind of behind the scenes where it was getting corrupted a little bit by little bit which didn't show up until the rapidly cascading events that lead to the erase & install. So I don't know if that was the case or if something happened around Feb 19 when I first really noticed the problems (although there may have been some unexpected quits before then, but not bad or repeated). Sorry this is so long.

    Chris,
    Thanks for the info/suggestions. I had already done the "clean install" without knowing it. I also had uninstalled Firefox and Chrome and was looking at dumping Safari, but I found the culprit file "_Flash Player.plugin" (version10.2.151.49) on a search for "Flash Player" under Spotlight.
    Strange thing was the file did not appear when just browsing through the various directories or searching with finder. Removed it and all is good.

  • Command line to clear cache?

    JRE 1.4.2_04
    I need to clear the cache on about 2000 machines and would prefer not to visit each one physically. Is there a command line parameter I can feed to jpicpl32.exe to trigger the cache clear? I've seen several threads asking about this but it does not seem to have been addressed as other solutions were found. However, I have no access to the server side of the application, so my only option is to clear the cache.
    can this be done?

    Hi,
    OBIEE Cursor Cache clear from Dashboard Java Script
    OBIEE Cursor cache is normally cleared from the Administration - Manage Sessions Screen...
    Here is a way that a piece of java can be embedded into a dashboard and call an xframe so you cant see it being called and clear the OBIEE Cursor cache - Presentation cache in effect.
    1. Just insert a text box into Dashboard - Tick the "Contains HTML Markup"
    2. Paste the script below into the text box
    <script language="javascript">
    document.write(
    "<iframe width=0px height=0px src=" +
    document.location.href.match(/^[^?]+/) +
    "?ManageSessions" +
    document.location.href.match(/&_scid=[^&]+/) +
    "&Action=CloseAllCursors&Done=saw.dll%3fSessions',{ensureFreshUrl:true});return false;')></iframe>"
    </script>
    Voila - when ever you click on the dashboard or refresh it the cursor cache will get cleared.

  • ApEx Development Team: tab clear cache - new feature?

    Hi ApEx Development Team!
    I searched the forum and found, that many have (had) the same problem like me:
    Why isn't it possible to clear the cache by clicking on a tab? Why is it only possible for parent tabs?
    Wouldn't it be a nice feature for the next version of ApEx? This feature exists already, only not for the standard tabs...
    Regards,

There are thousands of threads in this forum that are unanswered, or contain solutions that are suboptimal or that have been superseded. They can't all be updated "for search engine"...
    1) Edit the tab property where you want your page's cached removed. In My case it I had a tab pointing to page 6 and I needed page 6's cache cleared when I clicked on it.
    2) Edit the condition for the tab deisplay --> Function returning boolean.
    3) In the function body put the following code:
    begin
    if :APP_PAGE_ID != 6 THEN
    apex_application.clear_page_cache(6);
    END IF;
    RETURN TRUE;
    end; The expression will always evaluate to true, and will clear cache from page 6 if clicked from any other page that is not page 6.
    However if you want to apply condition to the page as well. (say and admin page based on :APP_USER property) then wrap the return true in another If-statement as well.I subscribe to the old-school idea that state-changing side-effects in functions are evil. Using Condition code in this unexpected way will make an application much harder to debug and maintain. If I came across this in an application I was working on I'd refactor it.
    Scott posted the correct way to do this above (post of 26-Mar-2008 23:00&mdash;not marked as helpful/correct as this was before the forum had this feature): Clear cache using an On-Submit Application Process that is conditional on the <tt>:REQUEST</tt> value set by the relevant tab(s).

    EDIT: RESOLVED
    For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
    Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
    Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

    As a last resort I will try uninstalling the Adobe Reader XI and install Adobe Reader 10 instead. It seems to work ok. But when I try to install version 10 the Adobe site tries to install XI.  Any ideas?

  • Applications disabled after clearing caches, etc.

    My computer had begun to run slowly, so I followed advice in these pages and installed and ran an application called Cocktail: I ran the daily, weekly and monthly service operations and cleared caches and logs. Now my computer runs much better, but two applications that I have had for some time no longer work. One is an RSS news reader called PluckyX, the other is CarbonErrors. In each case the application's icon has changed.
    In the case of PluckyX, it now tries to open using Script Editor, resulting in error messages, and I cannot find any other application to open it with. PluckyX is no longer made and its creator cannot be contacted, but I downloaded another copy from VersionTracker, with the same negative result. I have not yet tried to find a new copy of CarbonErrors.
    Can anyone please suggest a solution? It is PluckyX in particular that I should like to revive.

    If you are updating Safari (or just have):
    Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
    So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
    Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard widgets etc also rely.
    Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.
    In your case PluckyX and Finale are the suspects.
    You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, as well as the latest Java update.

  • Fire fox loads some websites and not others. Clearing cache and history doesn't help.

    Fire fox loads some websites and not others. Pages that don't load in Firefox do load in other browsers. Clearing cache and history doesn't help.
    One of the websites that doesn't load is google.com! It loads some of the page, just some menu items at the top of the page. Then, it hangs and remains in the Loading state (with the spinning wheel and "Loading" in the tab) indefinitely.
    The problem started after 3.6.11 was installed. I'm on Mac OS 10.6.4.
    I would be happy if you just showed me where I can download 3.6.10. Also, is there anything special I have to do if installing an older version?

    I ended up going into the clear history settings and setting it to clear history when Firefox closes and chosing it to clear history and cooking and browsing history when Firefox closes. Now the links work fine and the last page I was looking at before I closed Firefox is no longer there when it opens again. Problem solved!

  • I'm having to clear cache and cookies daily to have certain favorite websites appear normally - why does that intervention only work for a short period?

    I'm having to clear cache and cookies from the tools menu sometimes 2-3 times daily in order to make certain websites appear normally. The websites will have mostly script, which will be placed in columns, and very little in the way of graphics, maybe just a still picture of two. After I clear the cache and cookies, the sites go back to normal, but maybe after a few hours when I go back to the website it will re-appear as described above. The url below is the most commonly affected but it also happens on others like Yahoo news.

    In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
    #From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
    #Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
    #You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
    #To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button on PDF Viewer (what is this?). You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
    #Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.

    Install VMware Fusion and then you'll be able to save to the Mac side from Windows. That's the way my MacPro is configured and even though I'm a Mac newbie, I've had no problems so far.
    Note that this is very different than the MacDrive solution. If you are currently running BootCamp, that means you restart the Mac in Windows and OS X is not running, and you are using MacDrive to see the Mac disk. On the other hand if you are running VMWare Fusion, you are actually running the Mac in OS X the whole time and running Windows in virtualization within it, using a folder sharing feature to see the contents of the other operating system. It takes a lot more RAM to use virtualization because you are running 2 operating systems at the same time.
    I do something similar to VMWare Fusion. I run Parallels Desktop because I want simultaneous access to both Mac OS X and Windows, and I use Parallels' Folder Sharing feature to see Mac folders.
    Virtualization (running Windows inside OS X) is slightly slower and less compatible than Boot Camp (running Windows exclusively), so be aware that if you use the VMWare or Parallels solution, you are implementing a more radical workflow change than just reading Mac disks.

    Any page that requires a username and password will not open, this started last Thursday and at that time I was able to reinstate by clearing cache, disabling extension and deleting cookies. Subsequently that fix failed and now doing all those things has no effect.
