Clearing CMOS - Re-setting BIOS

Hi,
Would one of you moderator chaps please consider posting a sticky containing all the steps required to successfully re-set the BIOS. It would certainly save a lot of typing on this forum. Thanks.  )
I was also thinking that forum members should be encouraged to state their general location. It would seem to me that if any "Batch" problems exist on MSI products then we could narrow it down to areas of distribution across the globe. Many times on this forum I've seen exactly the same hardware used with completely different results - with exactly the same settings! Problems are usually down to user error, I know, but there's that odd occasion when we're all at a loss.
Mind you, I can already see the error in my reasoning. Todays computer building is by no means an exact science - there are just too many variables. I think I just shot myself in the foot  - well................. it was just a thought!  :D
Axel  :D

I don't wish to add any stickies ATM but I have posted comprehensive details several times. You could always search by clicking on my name, and search for posts by GlennVidia there is a Magnifying glass icon that will show all my posts consecutively. The last one was about a month or so ago, copy and save it to a notepad and save it in My Documents if you want... I will get around to something later..but it might take a while.

That is a fine example of a condition known as parametric differences, Bonz and I have explained this manufacturing limitation several times in this forum.
I manufacture circuit boards for a living so I see parametric differences on a larger scale. Many board designs have controlled impedence traces where a specified copper thickness, width, length are desired to stay within a tolerance dictated by the application of the circuit. The tolerance is specified by the engineer and there is a very small allowance for fluctuation within that tolerance spec.
It then becomes the PCB vendors challenge to make adjustments to allow for manufacturing processes, such as starting with a specified copper whieght and plating up to the desired thickness or starting with the actual desired copper thickness. Acid etching is how circuits are formed on conventional PCB's.
While the width of a trace can be maintained to within 20% or much better of it's original thickness from the original artwork, there will be an undercut of sorts.
When the board goes in the tank to be etched, it was previously coated by a etch resistant film that was exposed by UV light and a negative or positive image of the copper features such as traces, pads for SMD's (Surface Mount Devices).
The area under the resist film is protected from the acid. The other areas that are to be removed, simply rinse away. While the resist sits on top of a copper feature, the edges are unprotected, hence the term undercut. We could be at the low end or high end of the specified tolerance.
While we are still within tolerance it can have an effect when the board is assembled with other components that are manufactured with even tighter restrictions but again a given tolerance. Take a look inside your PC and you see the grand scale it becomes. We can build two or more PC's side by side and eachone witll behave differently, while unnoticable most times, voltage, leakage, response differences will often be negligable, it can often be bang up in your face odd behavior.
Then comes the game called swaporama when you can't quickly identify the peripheral or component causing the problem. That's what causes novice builders the most headaches because they do not have the overhead of additional parts to swap in and out.
Now we are very close to the pinnacle in design, manufacturing and performance and pushing new limits quarterly, things are much more sensitive to parametric differences than they ever where.

  • Do i have to clear cmos after updating bios?

hi im about to update my bios to 1.9 ... do i have to clear cmos after bios update finish? and also clearing cmos is as easy as removing the battery for a while then putting it back in right?

in my opinion Clear Cmos should be always done after flashing,
to ensure that new BIOS will operate as intended
if you need see here for guide:

  • Clear CMOS did not reset BIOS Password

OK please read my whole post before telling me to try something I already tried.
I have a somewhat unique problem.
    My system:
      MSI 870A-G54
      AMD Phenom II x6 1055T
      Windows 7
I have a system password setup through BIOS. Every time I reboot I enter the password. I have not forgotten my password.
I was having an issue getting into the BIOS, I would push Delete and on the POST screen it would say "Preparing to enter Setup" then the system password would prompt. I would enter it and then Windows would boot, no BIOS setup.
This happened over and over. I got fed up and decided to nuke the problem. I powered down, unplugged and set the clear CMOS jumper, waited about 20 seconds, reset the jumper, plugged in and powered up.
Then I pushed delete again, POST returned an error "CMOS not set, date and time wrong, press F1 for setup F2 to load defaults and boot.
I Press F1 and there is the password prompt. Only now my password doesn't work. Enter (blank) doesn't work.
So a clear CMOS again, only this time I pull the battery out too.
    Same result.
So I pull out the battery and set the clear jumper and wait 1 hour.
    Same result.
So I set the CMOS clear jumper and boot the system (yes I know the manual says not to do this) Obviously no post, 1 minute later I reset the jumper and reboot.
    Same result.
So I download the MSI HQ BIOS tool and flashed the most recent BIOS, clear CMOS.
    Same result.
My system works fine and I no longer have to enter a password to boot to Windows, but I am locked out of BIOS.
Please tell me there is a solution.
    Thank You

Got it! Was doing it wrong way leaving all spaces blank but it doesn't work because it always prompts you to enter your current password; so that's Current Password > "your current password"  hit enterNew Password > "leave blank" hit enterConfirm New Password> "leave blank" hit enter and it prompts you to "CONTINUE with save changes?" > hit enter and Password changes from <SET> to <CLEAR>; SAVE & Exit and it's done. Thank you!

  • How to Reset BIOS/Clear CMOS of an HP Pavilion 500-111ea

    Hello,
I was trying to change my computers boot logo because i dont like the HP one, and now when i try to enter my bios i get beeping, can anyone tell me how to reset the BIOS/Clear CMOS, this will be much apreciated. The computer still works fine, i just cant enter the BIOS or the UEFI Firmware Settings thing. When pressing F10 at boot up the computer beeps 8 times
My computer is a HP Pavilion 500-111ea

    Hi,
Please explain in detail what changes you made in an attempt to change the boot logo.
HP did not post a clear CMOS procedure for your model PC.  Review the below image.  Unplug your PC, hold down the power button for 1 minute. Now open up your PC and move the jumper blocks over to the left per the image for 30 seconds and then move the jumper blocks back. Plug the PC back in and give it go.  If you still get the eight (8) beeps then you could try a ROM image recovery.
Eight (8) beeps in an invalid ROM image.  Review this HP posted article for trying a BIOS recovery.
You might try this HP tools software.  Download the software to a different PC and create the USB 2 bootable tools flash drive. If you can get the flash drive to boot up then look for a firmware management selection.  There is not any documentation available on how to use this function so you are on your own.  HP Support might be able to assist you with a BIOS recovery and/or you might be faced with sending in your PC to an authorized HP repair facility to have the BIOS reflashed.

  • K7n2 delta2 platinum - changed FSB and can't boot or clear CMOS

    Hi all,
    specs first:
    KnN2 Delta2 Platinum board
    Athalon Barton 2800 XP
2 sticks of 256 pc 3200 ram and one stick of 512 pc3200
Last night I went into the bios of my new board, and unthinkingly set to CELL settings to manual and jacked up the FSB way up. Shouldn't have been working on my computer after a 12 hour shift. :( Anyway, it didn't boot when I reset. I tried clearing my CMOS and have unplugged the power, taken out the battery and the whole shabang in the CMOS clearing faq, but its still not giving me any beep codes or anything at all. I suspect my CMOS isin't clearing, however I'm wondering if its possible I've fried my new barton 2800 XP, my board, my ram, or all of the above. :( :(. I've read a ton of other delta boards having a safe mode jumper, j10, which will reset the fsb setting to 100 mhz, but can't find it anywhere for the delta2 platinum.
It was booting and getting into my OS before this, can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, this worked, however it was an acident. To test my chip I threw in my 1800 xp chip, cleared the CMOS again (which apparently was working fine) and suddenly it started posting beep codes. I assumed that meant I had burned my 2800 and returned it to the place of purchase. They threw it on a board and said it was posting fine, but I got my money back anyway. Going to go pick up another 2800 this weekend probably.
Anyway, I havn't actually tried the insert method. Oh, and yea, I jacked the FSB up to 300 or so... I think I'm somewhat confused, as I've got a 333 chip in a 2800 so I think I've mistaken something fundamental here.

I suspect my CMOS isin't clearing
Actually, it probably is clearing. On earlier K7N2, when the CMOS is cleared everything is set to default EXCEPT the FSB setting, that's why it's usually necessary when the FSB has been pushed too high by the user, to use the FSB Jumper (SAFE/USER) to reset the FSB to default.
I fail to see the wisdom of removing this jumper from later boards!
You should also try substituting your CPU with another - just to make sure it isn't the CPU that's at fault.
Sorry I wasn't of more help.

  • Wont boot unless clearing cmos

    JBAT1
Ok here's the story in full.
    Received K8T Neo2-FIR - was completely DOA along with a working 3000 90nm.
Received working K8T Neo2-FIR, got system to post after 5 hours of work (including 1.30 hours to watch Open Range whilst angered).
Post Showed 'invalid bios checksum' etc, the board now has 3.31 bios and still it will not post, will not even boot to be precise. It won't kick in fans etc UNLESS the jbat1 is set to CLEAR CMOS. Then the system works fine other than not retaining any bios settings.
I have now installed Windows XP Pro 64bit along with the 64bit drivers, unfortunately cannot use any MSI tools. I am going to update to the latest RC1 of XP64 pro as soon as Microsoft sort out the error in the download page/server.
Anybody got any clue to solving my problem? Oh and i can't run my Kingmax 3700 in dual channel, infact i dont think i can run 2 sticks in single channel either. (2x512MB).

    550Watt PSU
    22A at 12v rail
    3000+ Winchester
    MSI K8T Neo2-FIR
    2x IDE HDD on IDE1
    1x DVDWRITER on IDE2
    9700Pro
    1GB Dual Channel 3700
The PSU is going to be my next purchase, i have witnessed 2 Tagan UO2's explode recently so am going to go with an Akasa 460W. To be honest the current PSU is crap quality but testing the rails and amperes output actually hits 530Watts, on load i doubt it can hit this but still has enough power to satisfty 3xmore drivers and 6case fans in another SocketA machine which takes a lot more power at the cpu.
The ram has been in all possible combinations provided by the book but i can only get it to run 1 stick. I cannot run the LIVE UPDATE tool as im using Windows 64Bit. I've got 1 hour 26mins left on the download for the latest beta so hopefully i can run the tools tomorrow.
I have tried booting the machine etc with all items unpluged and select ones etc but no luck, it will only work if the jumpers are set to clear cmos. Maybe a multimeter on the jbat would reveal whether any current is getting passed through pin 1. Long shot and hopeless i know. Theres probably a reasonabe explanation.
I've now had 3 different Bios errors on post, so i think its just screwed it with the first boot on jumper2-3.
Soft reboots work fine (it hasnt stopped to tell me bios errors) just 'NO BIOS INSTALLED' at the sata raid post screen.

  • Clear Cmos or other first

I have an 845PE Max2 Fir 2.53 proc. 2- 512 sticks Corsair 3200 ram. No oc just high performance setting by spd. When starting computer I get only the first screen then it stops  ( the screen with MSI logo and with the option to enter bios ) tried delete and tab keys =  nothing it just stops. If I use the restart button or ctl alt del it starts ok and everything seems to work ok. ( D bracket says initializing floppy drive controller when it stops - one red light at top right corner. ) This problem just started. System assembled 1 year ago and has always worked fine until now. I checked floppy controller in device manager and it says no problems. Is there anything to do before clearing cmos. Although I need to get into bios regardless. Just thought there may be something to do first. Thanks for any suggestions.

Assaf that was an excelent response. It made me remember when a printer I had on another comp. caused the same thing by having it on before starting the computer. It also made me remember that my scanner on this comp. was left on and had been since this has been happening. I turned off the scanner and comp. waited a couple of hours then turned it back on and everything works fine again. No problems using the scanner just don't have it on before startup. Thanks

  • Clear CMOS after every crash ?

After putting together a new system I have this problem.
When the PC freezes, and this happens instantly if I hit the "auto" button in the CoreCentre pannel it will refuse to boot up again. To unfreeze it I turn the main power off for a few seconds and upon turning it back on the MB comes to life for half a second and shuts down. This happens over and over, on its own. The CPU fan kicks in along with the blinky leds on the MB fan, and the power led on the front pannel comes up ..... only for half a second on, 1 second off, half second on etc.
Only way to cure is to clear CMOS ram and the system will fire up as norm.
    Ideas?
    Neo12SR
    P4 3.0
    Kingston Hyperx 500mhx 1g
    Powercolor 8900xt
No overclocking or performance tweaks used.

Do NOT use the Auto Overclock button on "Core-Center" , as this Feature Raises your FSB until your PC Fails , and this is supposedly the Highest that you can Set your FSB to Upon Reboot, I dont Recomend Using Core-Center for ANY Hardware Changes, as it is still a project that is in the Works......Use "Clock-Generator" for Raising your FSB or Use the BIOS, and for Monitoring your Temps and voltages use "Speed-Fan".........Sean REILLY875

  • Clearing cmos

    Hi,
my K7T266 PRO (ms-6380) went dead after installing a new cpu; four red led's are shown and the old and new cpu won't do a thing... I understand by clearing the cmos there would be a chance that everything will work again. I read the user's manual and understand how to clear cmos but I don't know what this mean. Can anyone tell me about it ? Which information will be deleted ? ?(

    look again into your manual,
just at the first pages with the layouts of YOUR board.
i have a k7t266 pro2 and the jumper is under the battery and above the sys-fan-header.
the way of resetting CMOS (BIOS):
    shut down Windows/system,
turn off the mainpower switch (behind the power supply),
then take out THAT jumper AND place that one pin higher.
(jumper will cover the 1st and the 2nd pin)
    after 2 minutes,
put the jumper back to his ORIGINAL position.
(jumper will cover the 2nd and the 3rd pin)
then turn on the mainpower switch and power on your system.
PLEASE look into the manual FIRST!
P.S. after doing that, you will be prompt to go to the BIOS or load the BIOS defaults.
choose the option to go to the BIOS, because you will have to set up the settings for cpu and RAM, AGP etc...

  • Pls help! I cleared CMOS now I've lost RAID: P35 platinum

    Hi all,
Last night I had a problem with my PC not reading a CD. I read on another forum that it may be a problem with my CD drive not being recognised and it recommended pressing the 'clear CMOS' button then rebooting the system.
However, I have now lost RAID. It boots fine on one drive but lists the other as simply another drive. I went back into the BIOS and re-activated RAID, but when I do this the operating system fails to boot and gives me an error message saying:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root> system32\config\system
I have backed everything up while the machine is good, but would dearly not want to have to re-install everything again!
Is there any way I can recover it to the way it was before?
I did a search a found this thread, not entirely sure if it's the same problem:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=35930.0
    Cheers,
    Zap
    Details of my system:
Mobo: MSI P35 Platinum 1333MHZ FSB, Processor: Intel Q6600 2.4GHZ, 4GB ram, HDD: 2 x 500GB Samsung in RAID (mirrored)
    Operating System:XP SP3

Ok guys, here are the further details: (BTW triangle, it's RAID1).
In the BIOS here are some of the settings i've applied:
    On chip ATA devices:
    PCI IDE busmaster = Enabled
    RAID mode = RAID
The boot sequence is set to:
    1. CD ROM
    2. One of the HDD's (2 are listed as being available)
    3. Disabled
Now, it boots OK to the Intel Storage Manager page. If I press CTRL-I to open the configuration utility I get the following details:
    RAID 1
    ID = 0
    Name = Volume 0
    Status = Normal
    Bootable = Yes
So if I exit, it goes to attempt to boot XP. However before I get any sign of life from XP I get this error message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
Now if I set RAID mode = IDE in the BIOS the system will boot normally on one HDD. At the moment I can open explorer and see that the 2 HDDs are listed as Local Disc (C:) and Local Disc (E:)'.
I checked the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM on both the HDD's and found a difference in the file size between the two- I'm guessing because I'm currently using one disc and ignoring the other.
    SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file sizes:
    Local Disc (C:) = 40.9MB (41.1MB size on disc)
    Local Disc (E:) = 40.6MB (40.8MB size on disc)
So I assume because the two files don't match XP treats them as being corrupt when in RAID 1 mode.
Can I simply copy the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file from one disc to the other? What about the other items on the disc that don't match considering that other files have changed aside from this one?
Should I attempt to copy the entire C drive to the E drive....?????
    Thanks again guys,
    Cheers Zap.

  • 970 GAMING black screen when boot on cold start, have to clear CMOS everytime

I have 970 GAMING w/ FX8320, it shows black screen when boot on cold start, have to clear CMOS everytime to enter default.
I have updated it to the up to date M11 bios. Once it boot up, it functions OK no matter whether you reboot or reset it. But after turned off a few hours (cooled down), it shows on black screen again on boot, all LED lights up OK, but I can hear the fan like keep rebooting, any idea?
    PSU seasonic 430W, GPU HD7750.

In what DIMM slots did you insert your memory?  I just got and at this moment building a new computer with a 970.
A horrible experience I had with my last build reminded me of it.  My board was am MSI A88XM-E45.  DIMM1 is blue, DIMM2 is black, DIMM3 is blue, & DIMM4 is black.  When using two sticks of RAM, it says to install one on DIMM1 & the other in DIMM3 (Makes sense... After all, it's color colored that way).
Well it would not boot.  I reseated every component and for HOURS tried almost everything.  Finally I decided to place my two sticks of RAM in the first two DIMMS and viola!
I think I will begin this build the same way.

  • No signal after clearing CMOS

    Hey,
I was having problems and so chose to clear the cmos (using the jumper). Now there is no signal on monitor!
Just to make sure that it was cuz of clearing cmos, I had another computer with the problem so I did it to that one too lol. And that one also now shows NO signal on monitor. The monitor is working I've tested it with other comps. The picture was showing until i cleared cmos.
the two motherboards I have the problem on are:
    MS-7267 Ver: 3.0
    PM8M3-V H
Any help is appreciated. Everything is powering up, only thing is that nothing shows up on the monitor, and the monitor is in the "stand by" "yellow light" state.
    Thank You

sorry to hear you got double wammy  from your mobo  but be frank with us did you turn the power off before changing the jumpers setting or 240volt to power supply was still connected on both occasions?? if  power was connected you might have caused some damage to your mobo?? lets hope not.
try this if you have time and patient.
    1-unplug the pc.
2-Remove all memory and insert only one in the slot1 which is closest to cpu. if you can try to interchange the memory if they fit.
3-change the jumper setting to position where it clears the cmos and please leave it for at least 30 second and not ten. then after 30 second put the jumpers  in the original position  (make sure you get this right).
4-then plug the pc and power it.
there are occasions where static charges do prevent mobo from working. it has happened to me,  and i thought that i had lost the mobo yet it worked a few days later??
lets hope this gets you going.
    good luck
p.s do make sure you connect the speakers to mobo, from bip bip sound you may be able to tell the kind of fault you have .

  • X58 Platinum does not post unless I clear CMOS

I have to hit the 'clear CMOS' button from a cold start (unplugged power cable) on the back of the motherboard in order for it to boot. It restarts just fine.
Once it is booted, everything runs fine. It is just weird that I have to clear the CMOS every time, and reset the clock. Running default settings in the BIOS, no OC. I have changed batteries and it still will not boot or remember what time it is. I have seen some other posts about this but the usual answer is memory swap or memory put into the first black slot, etc., etc. Do I really need to RMA this board or is it just a BIOS fix?

  • Black screen Presario CQ62-219WM Clear CMOS jumper pins

About 2 years ago I bought my son the laptop for school from Walmart new. 6 months later, he brought it back to me from his Mom's and said it quit working. At that time, to check it out first, it booted to the HP screen only. Tried to get into the BIos with F2 but it was unsuccessful. Did the usual hard rested sequence with battery out,->unplug adapter-> Hold power button down 1 minute -> reboot with battery only and then with adapter plugged in. No change. Removing the RAM modules didn't make a difference. I replaced both Memory card to 2 GB X2 . Still wouldn't boot. Removed the HDD and replaced it with a known working drive from another 64 bit Wndows 7 OS and that didn't work. The original HDD is readable because it worked in the exchange. As a last resort, I built an Ubuntu live USB put that into the USB port on the presario (32 bit Ubuntu) and no success either. Can't reflash the BIOS. I decided that before I do anything more I would just take it back to Walmart as it was less than a year old and was directed to do so by HP (return it to where it was purchased). When I did, I was informed that because I was concerned of a motherboard problem, it was not covered under warranty and I was essentially stuck. I was recently unemployed so that was it. Went home, read some more and looked at the board and the capacitors visually and nothing grossly abnormal. I tried clearing the CMOS only by removing the battery and cold storing it for 24 hrs. Replaced it and still nothing. Read about the jumpers to CLRCMOS but I have looked on both sides of the board And there are no free pins, and nothing that Identifies anything to say clr CMOS or a variation of that. He wants to have his own back even though it has been a valuable learning tool. So .... Do you have a final suggestion other than go on eBay, buy a new board for $90, and quit trying to fix an unrepairable problem? He's going back to school and I still am out of work. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

There are no clear CMOS jumpers on the board. My best suggestion is to use one of the motherboard repair services on eBay. They can identify and repair defective chips on the board using advanced equipment. If you can remove the board and ship them just that, I have seen the service for as little as $70. Obviously you can handle removing the motherboard.

I have no affiliation with this person and there are several other similar ones on eBay. Most of the used motherboards you get on eBay have had a procedure like this done to them anyway.

now i know it because with my other main board
i got the same situation but there i could clear the
    cmos with the jumpers.....
    thanks for your replies ! ! !
(sorry for the bad englsih......) )

ok i'll try it tomorrow evening !
but i had the same problem with another mb and there i could solve it by clearing the bios
i ones let me tell that you can do it by sorting someting
wrong at the battery that would give me bad cmos check
but i don't know anymore how since the jumper for clearing cmos doens't work anymore
i even going to try the proposal of wonkanoby
one to success ? ? . . .i hop so almost one month and the board worked 1 day
