Clearing Documents in App's Dock Icon

When I right click an app's icon in the dock, I get a list of previously opened documents.
How do I clear this list?

Open the application on any document; most applications will have an entry "clear menu" in the  file menu:
File -> open recent -> clear menu
If the application does not have this menu item, it might be necessary to delete the preference files.

  • OSX Lion Server app hangs; dock icon shows incrementing counter

I'm running OSX Lion (10.7.3) on a MacMini.
since yesterday, the following concistenly happens: when I start the server app, it says "connecting to the server" next to the spinning wheel at the bottom right corner of the app window. After a few seconds, the app's dock icon shows a red counter (akin to the "unread counter" of the mail app) which is continuously being incrememted, and the (in)famous colored spinning wheel comes up as well: the server app hangs, and shows up as "Not Responding" in the Activity Monitor.
I've checked the System Diagnostic Reports on the Console window, and it reports the Server app as hanging, followed by a few thousand lines of messages ...
Does anybody know what goes wrong, or better, how to resolve this problem??

I have the exact same issue. I can see from Console.app, that
    opendirectoryd: got error 1100
    Can somebody please help?

  • App Store dock icon not displaying updates

I keep the App Store icon in my dock but when there is an application update I never see the red badge on the edge of the icon to tell me if I have any updates.  I did have this before I upgraded to Lion.  If I go the App Store itself, the number does display on the "Updates" icon at the top of the page.  What good is even having the dock icon if it doesn't work.  That would be like not having Mail display the number of new message in my inbox.

    Larry...
    MIght be corrupted Dock preferences.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
Move the com.apple.dock.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. See if that helped.
FYI.. when you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks!

  • Low Res Safari and App Store Dock Icons

After upgrading Safari to v5.1.4 earlier today I've noticed that the Safari and App Store icons on the dock are pixelated, i.e., low resolution.  Has anyone else seen this problem?  The Disk Utility icon also shows the same behavior.

    Hi Ray ..
    Might be corrupted preferences...
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.dock.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • My app store dock icon has an indicator like Mails' .

There is a 1 in the indicator. What does this mean and how do I dismiss it?
I've tried opening App Store and clicking on the new offerings. This doesn't help
    Thanks ~

iLife apps that came preinstalled are Mac App Store (MAS) apps and need to be updated through the MAS. They will not update through Software Update. The preinstalled apps need to be accepted into your MAS account for you to be able to update them.
First go to System Preferences/Users & Groups/Password and make sure that your MAS Apple ID is correctly entered in the location in the center of the pane. Then open the MAS and sign into your account. Go to the Purchases pane and the iLife apps are supposed to be listed there with an Accept button. After you have accepted them into your MAS account they should be eligible for any available updates.

  • Updated apps break links with dock icons (Mac OS)

When apps are updated via the CC desktop app, they sometimes (not always) come down with a new name which causes the link in the dock to break.
This would be a nuisance with one or two apps, but when a CC user has (like I do) a dozen icons in their dock it means that every major update requires several broken dock icons to be replaced. And if (like me) the user has more than one login on their machine (for separate personal and business workspaces) then the nuisance is doubled.
For example, I have just downloaded "Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014.1", which has removed the earlier version leaving an orphaned dock icon ("Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014"), for the sake of adding ".1" to the file name.
As a general principle, version numbers do not belong in an application name; there is a perfectly good field in the file info window for version number which is where practically every other vendor puts theirs.
This comes on top of the muddle of versions which has meant there are three "current" versions of some apps, for instance Photoshop (CS6, CC and CC 2014).
The other problem with your system is that in a few short months "CC 2014" apps will be outdated, if not in practise, certainly in name.
Some creative brains need to be exercised on this, don’t leave it to the nerds.

If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • How to eliminate default Document, Downloads Dock icons

    As I have 5 partitions, that's 10 Dock icons I don't use.
    Thanks,
    humanengr

Thanks -- that does most of it -- the Document and Downloads icons for all but the startup partition have not reappeared. Is there a way to permanently delete the D&D icons that belong to the startup partition?
Also, can someone please point me to detailed instructions online anywhere on Leopard? Or at least detailed instructions on new features introduced in Leopard?

  • Dock icons disappear when quitting apps

This is a brand new 1.9 GHz 17" iMac G5 with iSight built-in.
Software is up to date with OS 10.4.3 and all patches.
While working with the owner today, I quit Safari, and watched the Safari icon disappear from the dock. No smoke no nothing--when the App closed, the icon vanished.
Then I tried to demo iChat--and had the same experience.
It isn't a problem to drag the apps back to the Dock, but it shouldn't have to be done.
I finally wound up launching/quitting all Apps - all finally behaved properly, at least today.
Ideas on what's happening and how to prevent?

Ohairy, I'd guess that it was a corrupt plist. ~/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how the Dock icons work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
If the Dock icons function normally in the new user, I'd delete the plist and rebuild the Dock icons.
If other "odd" issues begin to show up it may indicate hardware problems with added ram, cpu or hard disk. Run Disk Repair & AHT (Apple Hardware Test).

  • No dock icon for app made with Automator

No section on here for Automator?
I've made an app with Automator. It runs OK and has the same icon as Automator when saved to the Applications folder but when I run it, no icon appears in the dock. Is that normal or have I missed something? There's a rotating cog in the menu bar to show that the app is running (so I can stop it from there) and I can see its actions taking place but I was expecting a dock icon like all other apps.

    macfan7 wrote:
baltwo - I'd already left it on the dock but there's no "indicator light" to show it's running and no "quit" on the dock menu. It's no problem it's just not standard app behaviour.
Interesting, since AppleScript apps do show the indicator light.

  • Dock icons start missingas i scroll and stacks documents are invisable

    Hiya
Got an i mac (which i adore) but after a few hours the dock icons have lines through them as i skim over them and some dissapear all together. Also the stacks fan out to show just shadows where the documents should be. Also having some programmes shut unexpectidly. Any ideas whats wrong? Its got a 1gb memory in it and i have got photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver etc on it, do i need more memory?

Boot from your install dvd & from the utility menu run repair disk & repair permissions. Restart your computer afterwards.
If you are using photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver etc you should be repairing permissions once in a while. Have you been doing that?
    You definitely need more ram.

  • Why does the iTunes dock icon bounce when quitting the app?

ITunes 11.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.6.8.
Every time I shut down iTunes, the dock icon bounces. This never happens with any other application. Dock icons are supposed to bounce when you start up an app, not when you quit it, Right?
    Thanks.

    Hello there, ocsimple.
The following Knowledge Base article clarifies what it means when an icon bounces on your dock:
About the Dock (Mac OS X)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1779
    Particularly:
    Bouncing icon in the Dock
An application's icon may bounce in the Dock to request your attention.
When you close iTunes, is it prompting you with a window or some other message when you click the bouncing icon?
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Does Mail display # of new messages in the dock icon even when app is off?

I'm not sure if it does or not. I like how the new iCal icon in the dock displays the date even when the app isn't open.
I'd love if Mail would display the # of new messages in the dock icon without having to leave the application open all the time.
Otherwise, I just have to stick with Gmail Notifier.
    Thanks for any insight!
    - Jeff

you would have to leave the application opened.
    hope this helps

  • Why doesn't the dock icon update after I update my apps?

When I have app updates available, the dock icon shows the number pending. After I perform the updates via the App Store, the dock icon still shows the previous number. Even after a week!

I don't have any problem with the actual update process: it works like a charm on both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. Being able to install my purchased apps on both computers is great, and the App Store applications on the two computers always know what has been updated on each. It's just that darned Dock icon! Here's hoping that the bug gets fixed sooner rather than later.

  • How can I make a new Dock Icon which when clicked has apps inside

I just seen a Youtube video for something and on the video it had a dock icon of iLife 09, and when clicked it had all the iLife 09 apps, iPhoto, imovie etc in the icon like stacks. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahiXGtP3bGA, about 22secs in he click its)
i would like to do this and then I'd be able to remove the individual iLife 09 apps from my dock for space.
Can someone help me on this please. I have leopard v10.5.8
    cheers

Create a folder anywhere convenient. Place in it aliases to the iLife programs. Drag it to the Dock.
If you want it to show with an icon rather than the generic folder icon, do this before dragging it to the dock:
Select the program which has the icon you want to use, e.g. GarageBand. Hit command-i. In the top left-hand corner of the info pane which opens is the icon for Pages. Click this to select it and hit command-c. Close the pane.
Select your folder: hit command-i. At the top left of the pane you will see the folder icon: click this to select it and his command-v. Now you can drag your folder to the Dock.

  • Why ... dock icons no longer display lights below most running apps

and there is no op-tion to quit a running app in right-click dock menu. Dock icons for some of the running apps have lights, but quitting the app from the dock is initially unsuccessful.  Icon either initially, or after quitting the app disiplays 'force qut', which, when clicked, doesn't work, either.  Left-clicking the icon (thats the 3rd click) finaly kills the app and removes the icon from the dock.

Command + Q is the quickest way to quit a running Application. Click its icon in the Dock to give it focus, then press Command Q keys and its gone. No need to mess about with right clicking and selecting.
