Clearing Down Time Capsule?

I was just wondering if there was anyway of clearing TC down and starting from scratch?
I have been backing up via ethernet cable for nearly 3 days now! It started off as backing up 70gb but the backups have failed 3 times! I am down to 280gb's now out of the 500 and still nothing has completed properly!
Why don't the back ups ever finish? It gets to the 'finishing backup' but that has been there for 8 hours now!
I must be doing something wrong! If not - then this is going back tomorrow!!

You have two options.  The first is to mount the Time Capsule's disk on your iMac and drag everything in it to the trash.  The other is to launch AirPort Utility, put the Time Capsule into "manual setup" mode, select the Disks panel and Disks tab, select the Time Capsule's disk in the list on the left, then click the "Erase" button.

  • Shutting Down Time Capsule Cleanly and Safely

Generally it's unwise to simply pull the plug on a hard drive, whether it contains boot volumes of a computer or it's functioning as a NAS unit or what have you. If the sudden shutdown occurs in the midst of a sensitive write operation, it could result in a compromise of data integrity.
Given the foregoing, I'm surprised to learn that Time Capsule has no provision for a safe (software-initiated) shutdown. Even wireless routers can often be powered down by means of a command accessed via an http interface. Why no such command available in the Airport Utility software which governs the Time Capsule device?
If anyone can correct me and point out a way to safely power down the Time Capsule, I would greatly appreciate it. Short of abruptly pulling the plug in the middle of its operations, how does one power down the Time Capsule?
    Jeff Mincey

Bob, I'm not aware of any hard disk which does not spin continuously -- irrespective of whether read or write operations are taking place -- UNLESS the drive is in a sleep mode. I don't think that simply to suspend all reads and writes to the Time Capsule hard disk will result in its cessation.
Just for the record, I don't make a practice of shutting down the Time Capsule unless I will not be using it for a significant period of time, (which I define as at least 48 hours and perhaps more). But moving parts do wear over time, and until solid state drive technology improves, I should think we would want a means whereby we can put Time Capsule's drive in sleep mode or shut it down altogether -- again, short of just pulling the plug.
I wouldn't raise the concern so much if my experience with all other network-based hard drives, (whether NAS or SAN) were not that they have a provision for software-initiated shutdown.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this.

  • Clearing out Time Capsule, how?

Hi all, I hope this will be an easy and quick question to deal with. I just got a new iMac, set it all up with setup assistant etc. all went smooth, except now my time machine wont back up because it's too full from all the other backups. How can I erase all the old stuff on TC, and start new with my new iMac?
Thanks for any all tips, suggestions.   Jeff

  • Matching UUIDs with Time Capsule

That's exactly what I want to do, if anyone knows how to do it.
I have already done the full reset of Time Machine/Time Capsule, i.e. shutting down Time Capsule, trashing Time Machine preferences, rebooting/restarting, turning Time Machine on. My backups are running, but each one for the last 22 hours has gone through this point:
May 23 09:25:44 soundtime-iMac /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[243]: Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    May 23 09:25:44 soundtime-iMac /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[243]: Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
The backups proceed without generating any failure, but theUUIDs never get matched. Is there any way to get these to match manually?
    TIA,
    -gg

Are the backups actually NOT working, just not showing any kind of failure?
Ah, a clue! That sounds like TM may have started a new set of backups. See if there are two sparse bundles on your Time Capsule.
Another long shot possibility: From a Finder window's menubar, select +Go > Go to Folder+ and type /volumes in the blank. You should see only aliases there, of either 4 kb or zero size. If you see anything else, that may be where the missing backups are.
Also see #C9 in Troubleshooting -- it's rather bizarre, but problems with those names can sometimes cause similar problems.
Sparse bundle and volume indications look A-Ok; I have one sparse bundle for the backup of this particular computer and I see that alias and the Time Capsule alias under volumes (two other computers get backed up to the same Time Capsule).
I had previously edited this computer's name in sharing (it was getting the mysterious (2) and (3) attached) to make sure it matched the original name from when backups began in 2008. Ditto for Time Capsule, which has the same name since the very first backup.
Current backup process has moved on and is updated as follows. Let me past more Console code:

I'm not sure what the 'narrative' is supposed to look like, but here's my interpretation: Time Machine has been going through a process of backups and clearing out old ones in order to make room for the latest backup. It is repeating the exact same steps, and those steps are configured so that it has to go through the Mismatched UUID/Deep Traversal EACH TIME it finds there is not enough space on the Time Capsule. It deletes an old backup, tries again, etc. Now, it has enough room to write this backup. Should I expect that when this completes I will have matched UUIDs? Is there any resources that breaks down the software's procedure in this detail?
    Thanks

  • Clear net connectivity with time capsule/home network

So Chicago has a new ISP - Clear. It is a wireless provider that boasts download speeds up to 12mbps. I have been using ATT DSL elite pro with time capsule as my wireless hub. I have extended my network via airport express and have two that power speakers/home entertainment system.
I have it up and running and connected directly from their router to my iMac. I would like to attach the motorola wireless router to my current home network that runs between the timecapsule and two airport expresses.
Any help would be appreciated. As well your opinions on choice of wireless ISPs vs home dsl line.
    Thanks
    Jenn

From your description, it sounds like you could swap the Clear modem and the AT&T modem/router. Power down your entire network for a moment. Then start the Clear modem first and let it run for 3-4 minutes, then start the Time Capsule, then Expresses and computers.
If you get a blinking amber light on the Time Capsule, check your settings as follows using AirPort Utility. It's located as follows: Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup and then click the Internet icon at top of the setup page
At the bottom of the next page, look for the Connection Sharing setting. If I understand the Clear info correctly, you would set this to "Share a public IP address"
I notice that Clear has online tech support, so you make need to refer to them as well. Please post back on your progress.

  • Clear Wireless Modem not communicating with Time Capsule

I have a clear wireless home modem and am having connection issues with my time capsule. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it? I know the modem is working because when I connect the ethernet directly into my computer it works. Help!?

    Is this a new TC?
Most important.. did you power cycle the modem. If this is a cable network pure modem ie no router function.. did you power down the modem for say 20min at least?? Then power up modem wait a couple of min for it to stabilize then power up the TC.
If the TC is bridged this is not necessary.. ie your cable modem is also a router.
Here is a bit of detail about checking the wireless is ok.. but IMHO the likely issue is not wireless per se.
Did you use identical wireless names? If so try deleting all the old names in the computer under the wifi network preferences.
Select each one and use the minus to delete it.
Then redo the configuration for the TC.
No luck start over .. factory reset the TC use all new names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric will give you much less problems in the future.
Still no luck make sure you have ipv6 set correctly.. ie link local only and check the gateway (router in applespeak) and dns values are correct.. dns is not on the main page.. it has a separate tab.

  • Lost connection with Time Capsule (Office for Mac programmes run down)

My colleague and I work at the office with 2 Macbooks. Both are connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule, which we use as a shared hard disk. We use Office 2008 for Mac. Now Word and Excel run down often after of little things like doing a search or cutting and pasting. I get the spinning ball can only do a forced quit to end the program. This is frustrating and time consuming!
A friend told me to change my UID, cause my colleague and I both have the same UID (501) at our Macbooks. He downloaded Server Admin Tools to change my UID into 1001 with Work Group Manager. But when I arrived at the office this morning I didn't have a connection with the Time Capsule. To be able to work I changed the UID back to 501 again (but now I can't open excel document inless I drag them to the hard disk of my Macbook).
The friend is not a Apple professional so he doens’t know how to help me anymore. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

Temporarily, try connecting an Ethenret cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open AirPort Utility and Click Manual Setup
Click on the word "Status" (2nd Line) and a window will open to with information about why the light is flashing amber

  • Time Capsule appears twice in Airport drop down menu

Menu Bar > Airport drop-down menu: My Time Capsule's wireless name shows up twice in my list of wifi sources. Once in the group with all the other routers and again in a group called "Devices".
    Long story short…
I start with a perfectly functional, WPA/WPA2 password-protected Time Capsule: Over a year old. Two MbP's using it for Time Machine backup. Connected to a 1.5TB MyBook external HD via usb. Doubles as my wifi router. Everything's connected to it, including my wifi-enabled printer. Works great. No issues.
I get this idea in my head that I need to hide my wifi signal. I figure it out and ¡Viola! Hidden. Then I try to add my wifi-enabled printer to the list of allowed devices in "Access Control". I hit a big snag and can't figure out how to get it to connect (btw, don't buy a Brother printer. Pure crap). So, I give up and revert permissions back to visible, password-protected state.
Skipping irrelevant issues that I already resolved, I now have the wireless name of my Time Capsule appearing twice in the airport drop down menu. It appears with all the other wifi sources my machine detects AND appears at the bottom under a new category called "Devices".
All I want is to have things back the way they were and this anomaly in the drop down menu is a constant reminder that I #1 failed and #2 bought a crap printer.
(Long story long, I guess. Sorry.) How do I delete this "Devices" group from the airport drop down menu?

My wifi goes down at least once a day and I have to unplug the time capsule and reboot it and then it works fine.  Any idea why this is happening/what I can do to fix it?

I was having this problem while still using Mavericks -- it started after a Mavericks update last spring.  During the initial Yosemite beta runs over the summer, it seemed to be fixed, but after the official launch in October, I had all sorts of problems keeping connected.  Its gotten a little better, but still happens to at least one of my devices every day.  Weird that we still cannot figure out why the connection keeps dropping on some devices, but not others, and then the next day, one of the devices that didn't disconnect the previous day will disconnect, but the ones that did disconnect, stay connected.  It's just sloppy, poorly written software for technology that isn't working the way it should.  If you turn off Continuity and Handoff on all your devices, you will probably see that everything stays connected.  With those turned off on all devices, TC stayed connected to everything for over a month.  The day I turned Continuity back on, all the problems started again.  It had something to do with the bluetooth version being used, the wifi routine, and Apple's AirPlay technology not quite getting along with each other.

  • I have a 1st generation time capsule and an extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down

I have a 1st generation time capsule and an appe extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down? Should I dump it an get the new n version?

yes it is likely to be slowing down the network because you are using 802.11b/g
from what i recall with b/g a slow client can slow down the entire network to that clients speed.
this was the major improvement with 802.11n and Mimo. each client can be connected to the access point without affecting your speed to the rest of the network
its reccomended to get all new "N" equipment if you have the budget for it. some of those old airports and time capsules can still be worth something on amazon marketplace so you might be able to sell them
if you want to create / join / extend a netwowrk your going to probably need all "n" based equipment.
buy the new 4th generation time capsule or the new 5th generation airport they have better stronger radios
in the mean time configure your base station router to a high multicast rate, so it will prevent devices connecting to it at 1-2 mbps speeds and slowing down your network
if you have an apple care covered mac remember the airport / time capsule rule. all airports and time capsules purchased 2 years before you bought your mac to the 3 years of apple care covers them. if you do not have apple care then the standard warranty applies

  • HT201250 Can I shut down my mac in the middle of a time capsule backup?

If I shut down my mac when time capsule is processing a backup, will it cause any problems?

Only a minor problem.  The backup will be cancelled, so after you start your Mac up, the next backup will have to do a "deep scan" to figure out what's changed since the last (completed) backup.   That will take somewhat longer than usual.

  • Time Capsule and Windows 7 clear approach

    Hello all,
I tried now for one month to install the Time Capsule (with Airport and Bonjour software) with Windows 7 WIRED.
First I had to turn on the Net-Bios, which is difficult to find. I did.
The Time Capsule was visible in the Windows File system, now it is gone. The green button is burning. It's 4th generation.
The help-desk of Apple Holland can not help me and they say that it will not work with Windows because the Windows file system is different than the Mac system. Then they say that I have to make the same IP adres on the Time Capsule and the Windows file system, which is impossible as they said also.
I bought the Macbook Air. I want to put all my files from the Windows PC to the Time Capsule in order, after that,  to reach the MacBook Air with the Time Capsule. The shop told me that this is possible. I tried some advises from the web, but seems to be difficult for me. The help-desK isn't able to help me anymore.
Please who can help with a clear step-by-step approch?

doesnt work for me, its a real dealbreaker.
I've tried manually adding and editing the lmcompatability registry key, mapping via explorer, mapping via net use, browsing via unc, tried with airport config software and without, mapped via IP and mapped via hostname.
The thing is just flakey and doesnt work.
    I've tried firmware 7.4, 7.41 and 7.42. As you say, 7.3 is no-go with a dualband.
The problem for me isn't mapping the drive, but using it once it's mapped. files and folders fail to copy, stuff doesn't always delete, drive sometimes becomes unavailable. The TC is solid otherwise.
There has to be another registry setting to change somewhere though hopefully. Either that or they've tightened the security within win7 to the point of no return for some legacy stuff.

  • When shutting down all devices at days end is it advisable to pull the power plug daily on the Time Capsule.

When shutting down all devices at days end is it advisable to pull the power plug daily on the Time Capsule.

It is up to you to decide.
My opinion would be that if Apple wanted you to power down the Time Capsule on a regular basis, they would have included an "Off" switch, or a means to power off the Time Capsule from your computer.
