Clearing "Other" storage on Macintosh HD
My storage shows over 130 GB of "Other". What is it and how do I clear it out? I have almost as much "Other" as I do regular files. I've emptied my trash, that has been the only thing that has effected the total amount of "Other".

How to clear "other" storage space
How do you clear storage space taken up by "other"?
To do that you will need to restore your phone:
If You Are Locked Out, Have Forgotten Your Passcode, or Just Need to Restore Your Device
1. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
3. iOS- Understanding passcodes
4. What to Do If You've Forgotten Your iPhone's Passcode
5. How to Recover Forgotten iPhone Restrictions Passcode | The iPhone and iPad
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
2. Connect your device to your computer.
3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
4. Select the Summary tab.
5. Select the Restore option.
6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the
Back Up option. If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary
to create another.
7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
you see "iPhone is activated."
9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore or have forgotten your restrictions passcode, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New. -
How to clear other storage?
can anyone suggest me better app than storage cleaner?
there is no other app in the Store mate. they perform exactly the same function. you can try deleting your browser cache in Internet Explorer too.

After syncing and installing ios, I lost all my music and my other storage space is over 9gb. How do I get rid of this?
You need to restore your iPhone from a backup to clear the "other" data. If that does not work you must restore it as new.

How delete other storage from ipad air?
How delete other storage from ipad air?
The iOS will NOT automatically delete "other" if the device gets full. That is totally incorrect.
"Other" is basically all of the data and stuff that does not fit into any of the other categories on the device, like apps, photos, music, videos, and so on. It contains Safari Bookmarks and History, Notes, Contacts, Email messages, Text Messages, photos assigned to contacts, cached app data (but not documents themselves) etc. When "other" becomes too large, it can take up a lot of space and cause problems. It should not be more than a few GB at most and for most people it would probably be around 400MB - 2 GB.
IF something gets corrupted on the iPad and "other" grows out of control, you may have to restore the device in order to clear that data. One starting point troubleshooting step for dealing with the problem is to backup your iPad, restore to factory settings and then restore the backup. There are also other less invasive things that you can try first.
A Google search will turn up many articles that talk about how to reduce "other" on an iOS device.

WP8 Nokia Lumia 810 "Other" Storage!
I purchased two Nokia Lumia 810 WP8 phones on 12/31/2013. As of Monday, February 18, 2013 I can no longer install updates, take photos & videos; therefore playing games is also not an option since the phone cannot be updated because it continues to state it's "full" no available space. It does ask if I want to change the setting to save to my SD card which I've configured since day 1. I have a 16gb SD card with 9gb available which I cannot do anything with. I haven't even started paying for our phones and can't even use it. I've deleted many apps leaving me with pretty much the basics, turned off my back up since I ead the back up is saved to the phone, deleted Internet history/browsing, messages, call logs, I have no music and 100 photos...no vidie....seriously, haven't had the phoneslong enough to load up on pics as I typically do. I have 1,600 photos in my iPhone with 6gb available. Has anyone taken this any higher...media, Facebook, Twitter etc?? This is totally unacceptable.
You simply cannot resist it can you? No, you were not “merely stating my experience and reporting what I found”; for if you had done so, I would have no cause to respond the way I did. You added, “Spending a few minutes researching it instead of going off on a rant is usually much more productive”; which implies the questioner does not have a problem, but merely a lack of understanding. Moreover, there is no way that this could be construed, by anyone, as you “not saying others do not have an issue or that there could not be an issue, just that I am not seeing in my case.” By stating that he could have avoided the complaint by doing some research, you are virtually stating that he only requires ‘educating’; and you definitely stated that his complaint was a “rant”. I detect nothing that is overly declamatory, angry or vehement in his original question; though I’m sure he would have some justification for feeling frustrated.
Furthermore, you do not ‘merely state’ your position in reply to me; because you add the phrases, “hampered by any prejudice or negativism” and “someone feels the need to hijack a thread for his own personal baseless vindication”. This clearly implies my judgment is hampered by baseless prejudice, does it not? I have been a Nokia user, non-stop, for over 20 years; and a Microsoft one (and ardent supporter) for nearly as long. There is no-one, I suggest, less prejudiced against either organisation than me; except those who are so ‘prejudiced’ as to see any justifiable criticism as ‘ranting’.
In any event, it seems like "this behaviour makes perfect sense" is not something with which even Microsoft’s Windows Phone Design Manager, Joe Belfiore, would agree.
http://wmpoweruser.com/microsoft-acknowledges-promises-fixes-for-other-storage-issue/
The fact that he is recommending turning off Sky Drive Auto-upload indicates this is not a “baseless” problem; but one based on reasoned, ‘unprejudiced’ observation.
Like many others, it took me only a few days to recognise a looming problem; and we didn't have anyone pointing it out to us. You seem to remain oblivious to it, even with literally hundreds of people pointing it out to you, and right up until Microsoft acknowledged it; though perhaps you feel Joe Belfiore has taken to ranting? -
Getting rid of "other" storage category
hello I have a 32GB iPhone 5S. Currently my iTunes is showing that I have 18.23 GB of "other" storage. However, when I look under Settings-->General-->Usage, it says my Photos & Camera are only using 1GB. The rest is apps and the biggest one is 439MB.
This is preventing me from syncing as much music as I would like. I'm not sure why, but this issue started happening yesterday when I upgraded to iOS 7.1.2
Before this, I was able to hold MUCH more music on my device. I have done the following to try to clear out "other":
1) deleted photos, videos
2) deleted text messages
3) cleared out voicemails
4) restarted ipWhat is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?
If your other is 18.23 GB that means you have some corrupted files.
A restore as new will minimize the others.
Not sure what the other data is, maybe corrupted music. -

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

IPad "Other" Storage is Huge - Blame iTunes in the Cloud Streaming?
I have almost 6GB of "other" storage, according to iTunes. My iPad keep prompting me that my storage is almost full. My "other" storage seems to keep increasing every time I stream a purchased movie or TV show from iTunes in the Cloud. It seems like iOS 7 is downloading the file for me to watch, but then once I finish watching it, the file stays on my iPad. I have gone into Settings>Usage and my iPad says my Videos app is empty (which is true, because I was only streaming the movie or TV show). This problem caused me to already have to do a fresh install of iOS 7 once on my iPad, and I'm quickly approaching the point where I'm going to have to do a fresh install again. This bug is annoying. Does anyone else have a solution for this? I'm going to report the bug to Apple.
Go into your settings app and make sure you haven't accidentally switched the "show all songs" setting off. Even if you're reasonably sure you didn't do that it won't hurt to check, or turn it off and then back on again to see if changes anything. If that setting is turned off, the phone hides songs that have the "cloud" option (but you can still find them if you search by pulling down to reveal the "search" box above the top of your song list).
Other things that might help:
- "force quit" your music app by double-clicking the home button, then touch the music app in the bottom row until it squiggles, then tap the "x". When you start the music app back up again, it will reload the icloud data.
- shut itunes match off in the settings app, then open the music app, then turn match on again, and open the music app again - this should wipe out the icloud information on your phone and force the phone to get a fresh copy (you may want to do the "force quit" too, but just to hurry it up since the music app doesn't always realize it needs to update right away)
But these are all guesses, I haven't seen this problem myself. It could also be a temporary glitch on the apple servers, and may clear itself up without you needing to do anything. -
i am desperate now i have 21gb in other storage on ly lumia 920, Have tried the aps in the market place that fill you phne with junk then delete it. All nokia said was hard reset your phone THAT IS NOT A SOLUTION
If you are asking to minimize all these items from 1 to 13, what's the point of having a smartphone, especially one as good as the Lumia 920?
I have had my 920 for almost 10 months and have lots of apps, games, photos, and videos. I watch on-line videos and browse quite a bit every day, not to mention use news apps such the ones from NBC and BBC. I have never had to reset my phone. Any the Storage Check shows that my System Files are at 1.6 GB and my Other files are at 1.5 GB. So, clearly the 21 GB issue has some other causes.
One possiblity is "excessive" SMS messages. I usually average around a few hundred a month, whereas my daughter is closer to 5000 a month. And her Other files are almost 6 GB.
uehluap wrote:
@kaw203,
Sorry to hear that your Other storage has reached 21GB. I'm afraid there is nothing you can do except to hard reset your phone, re-install all your apps and re-do your settings and customization. Yes, I'm sure you have pressed the clear button in Storage checker, not that I will insult you with this question.
I'm afraid this is something you may have to repeat further down the road. In order to increase the time between hard resets you should minimize the following activities:
1) installing new apps to try and uninstalling them
2) installing any unnecessary apps
3) playing games
4) taking photos and video using your phone
5) uploading photos or documents to Skydrive
6) file transfer using bluetooth
7) copying large numbers of photos or music to your phone
8) attaching photos to email messages
9) receiving email messages with attachments
10) uploading files via social media like Whatsapp, facebook and twitter
11) installing maps
12) web browsing
13) any activity which require moving files between your phone and another device/cloud.
If you are really careful you may be able to maintain your Other folder at 0.5GB to 1GB like cjlim here.
Good luck! -
IPad 3 7GB of "Other" storage out of 16GB
Hi guys,
I only have 3GB's of audio and apps on my iPad yet it's showing 7GB of "Other" preventing me from loading a movie. I've read quite a bit on the forums about this, seems quite common and I've tried the following:
1. Cleared Safari history + cache
2. Reset all settings
3. Held down the sleep + home button until the Apple logo appears (multiple times)
5. Deleted all text messages
6. Deleted all notes & reminders
7. Deleted all apps and only re-installed the ones I really need (I have 6 apps)
None of the above has worked. I still have 7GB of "Other" storage. I currently have IOS 7 running, I can't update because I need 7GB of free space - ironic! The download via my Mac/iTunes is taking ~3hrs (South African bandwidth is slow!) and I don't think downloading the new software will fix the problem.
My guess is it has something to do with a movie that hasn't downloaded correctly and it's sitting somewhere on the device. That guess is based purely on something I saw in a thread but the explanation was too technical for me to follow. Interrupted/ failed downloads happen quite frequently in South Africa, our bandwidth isn't particularly fast.
