  • Clear RAM/temp files on system SSD disk

    Hi!
6 months ago I installed OS X 10.8.5 on a faster SSD disk on my Mac Pro from 2008. PhotoShop and other heavy applications became much faster with the new flash drive, initially. Now, it's even slower than before, for some reason. Can I clear RAM cash, temp files or something?
On this 120 GB disk I've only installed the operative system along with applications. It seems to me that I have temporary files taking up space or something because the memory scan shows 76.83% of memory being used for "other" stuff than photos and apps. (se attached images)
I keep all files that I work on, on a different disk. In other words, the SSD disk should not be running out of memory like this - right?
Happy for any help with this!
    Cheers!
    Angela

CS6 uses the boot disk for scratch and can put 100's of GB on there if there is room, and can cause trouble and overload the SSD.
So yes you need to find another location for scratch.
PCIe lets you leave your drive bays as they are and allow you to add two SSDs that will run faster and not impact performance.
I would aim for keeping the boot drive to 60GB free.
I would also want to see the 500GB drive upgraded to 1TB or larger (use the 500GB for backup clone of the system for one thing).
Your 2TB is where I like to see: 50% free area.
You need to make a backup system image of the SSD with CCC and then restore from and booted from the clone and restore back to the SSD at some point soon. Use this SSD for scratch or another seeing you have a free hard drive bay #4 still open until you can get a PCIe Sonnet card (US$150-300).
Install TRIM Enabler 3.0 now and use Onyx after that.
There are more options today but the basic ideas, from MPG:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshop-Intro.html
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Benchmarks.html
MPG LLoyd's site, is a graphic photographer and edit.
Eventuially a newer even a 2009 Mac Pro and better GPU and more cheaper RAM would make sense if you want to as would 10.8.5.
Or save up for Mac Pro 6,1 or to buy a used Mac Pro 2012 even. Some things you can take with you and re-use.
    Look at your 8800GT.
It has one power cable. There are two thumb screws holding a bracket bar in place. So you can remove or upgrade or clean.
Small, 512MB VRAM, can run hot, can get dust clogged inside and need to be cleaned out. And could fail from heat and weak solder joints (take apart, bake in oven for 15 minutes at 350*F actually works, is documented how to do on Youtube). 10.6.8 does not provide as many options in graphic cards.
It seems like upgrade to 10.8.5 $19 might be worthwhile some point (another reason to 'clone' your system or start fresh with a new SSD for system, so you can if needed continue to boot and run 10.6.8).

  • MacPro does not react to Clear RAM Preview

In order to see the movie fluently I make a RAM Preview. That works fine. But I cannot erase the RAM-Preview. Only after restart of motion, the RAM is free again. When I check with "istat pro"-Widget, I can see that the RAM is full and clicking on "clear RAM preview" has no effect. Anybody knows what the reason for this behaviour could be?
    Thanks for help or advice.

Have you done all the updates? Have you tried trashing your prefs?

  • Clearing Ram Technical Question

The source of my recent bother has been an apparent lack of RAM
Now it seems that for some reason my imac is not clearing RAM when I quit software
Only a restart seem to help ...which is a pain cos one would expect the OS to manage the RAM properly
I'm trying some software called iFreemem which makes a big difference
Anyone have any sulotions to this cos if there is one then I'm back in the happy L9 camp again

Make it a habit to start Logic first after booting, before any other program. RAM can get fragmented if you have several apps running and then quit , (Web browser, PDF viewer, etc).
However, a restart should not be too much of a chore, an Imac should be able to reboot within a minute. If it takes much longer, you need to unleash some maintenance utilities, or take a hard look via activity monitor on what apps are actually running (in the background).

  • Clearing RAM after rendering

I find that, after I've exported a complex project from Motion, my entire system is extremely sluggish. I can tell that this is because Motion has used up every bit of RAM it has and is needing to seek everything it needs for other programs from the hard drive once again.
Is there an easy way to "clear" all the Motion stuff from the RAM? The only way I know of to get things running smoothly again is to just reboot the computer.
I've looked at pricing for upgrading my memory, and that just isn't in my budget at this point.

Well, I had just got around to a similar project. I exported another complex clip then cleared the RAM. It doesn't seem that there was any improvement to the sluggish system. I'll need to reboot.

  • Clearing RAM without restarting computer?

My little Ram chips start to get cloggy on a regular basis. Is there a way I can clear the RAM without doing a restart?

  • Plenty of RAM, but RAM preview clears itself?...

    Hello:
I've got a 20 second motion project that I'm selecting a 5 second portion of (using the timeline in and out markers). I clear ram preview (just to be safe), then do a RAM preview.
I watch my memory fill up partially in activity monitory. It only uses about 1.5 G out of a total of 4G RAM.
Then, I play the project... it chokes. I've got a replicator and a mask or 2, with some graphics. The project is HD, but I've got an X1900 card.
I also notice that as I scrub through the short burst I'm trying to preview the RAM preview (Green on the timeline) indicator disappears, reappears, get's chopped up, comes back.
Is this normal behavior? Seems like I should be cooking with oil at this point....
    Thanks for any input!

    Fun fact:
(Motion notes below) Final Cut Pro can only use a maximum of about 2.5GB of the 4GB maximum RAM it can allocate from the system.
Final Cut Pro is a 32 bit application, which means it can address up to 4GB of RAM. Of that 4GB, Final Cut Pro uses about 1.5GB for libraries, drivers, and so on.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93844
Doesn't matter how much RAM you've got, that's the limit.
Motion is going to encounter similar issues, but I don't have the numbers. You won't be able to use a large chunk of the 4GB it can allocate. (Also, if you've only got 4GB RAM total, a chunk of that will be allocated to the actual operating system)

  • Ram slots not working after CMOS reset

Im using MSI K9N Neo V2 mb, and it was doing fine until i reseted CMOS. Now 3 out of 4 ram slots are not recognized by BIOS nor Windows. Im sure that ram memory is ok, cause ive checked all of it by replacing it between ram slots, and they're only working in slot nr 4.
I know that the MB is old, but everything was working fine, and suddenly went wrong after CMOS reset
    Things i did to fix:
    Updated BIOS
    Msconfig memory uncheck box
    Cleared CMOS with jumper
    Replaced CMOS BAT
Checked if smth's wrong with cpu
Cleared RAM slots with rubbing alcohol
System wont even boot without memory in DIMM 4 (ram slot 4), and BIOS only recognizes memory in DIMM 4
This is really frustrating, because there is no reason for smth to not work all of a sudden
    Any help? Tnx

There is a known issue with Powerbooks with the lower memory slot failing, and it sounds like yours may be starting to fail. At one point there was an Apple recall for a small sliver of Powerbook systems to fix that.
The alternatives are to run with 1GB in the upper slot, try one of the internet vendors that say they can fix that (check references), or install a used logic board. I don't believe Apple is repairing Powerbooks anymore, so if you want to buy a used logic board, you'll need to install it yourself, or perhaps an Apple Authorized Service Provider would be willing to do the work.

  • How do you erase and reinstall a hard drive without a disc? I bought this mac book pro under a year ago and am pretty sure i downloaded mountain lion from the app store. Basically Im having startup issues and this is the final step Ive reached

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • 40+ processes running with no apps open; automatic reboot at least once a day post 4.4.2 update. What is going on?

Ever since I went through the update process for my Galaxy S4 to Kit Kat, 4.4.2, my phone is constantly running 40+ invisible processes that eat up most of the 2GB of ram. Needless to say, this is also causing my battery to drain 3 times faster or more than it used to prior to the update. I have Powersaving Mode turned on, constantly clear RAM and always double check to make sure I am not accidentally leaving any apps open. Additionally, my phone reboots itself at least once per day. NONE of this occurred before the 4.4.2 update. I am hoping someone here or from Verizon can possibly shed some light on the matter.

        Hello CharlesDW,
Help is just a posting away! Let's get your device working properly. May I ask have you completed a reset after the update? I suggest this to resolve a the initial issues with the update. Here's a link on how to do so. As always, we suggest backing up your info before the factory reset.

  • Tiff previously edited in ACR will not open in Camera RAW from Bridge

Yes, I have googled this and found instances going back to 2010 with no satisfactory answer. I have Photoshop 5.1 and the latest ACR and Bridge that work with it. 2011 MAC Mini 10.8.2.
I scanned a landscape oriented printed email image at 800 spi as a portrait orientation and saved it as a tiff. I opened this tiff in Preview and decided it needed more than minor tweaks so I opened it in ACR from Bridge, made a few adjustments and saved it. I thought I could see what I was doing better if it was in landscape orientation again so I opened it in Preview and rotated 90 deg CCW, saved it as a tiff. Going to Bridge I found Open in Camera Raw greyed out. I went back to Preview to see if I could get what I needed in its Tools while viewing it in landscape. Adjustments took forever this time, so I gave up and took a look at the image characteristics. Rotating in Preview had changed the image size to 3.3333...... times larger at 240 ppi still aRGB, still a tiff. This has never happened before, including slow adjustments
I duplicated the rotated file and changed it back to 800 ppi and normal size, went to Bridge, Camera Raw still greyed out. Original unrotated image
that had been edited in ACR and saved will still open in ACR.
All kinds of strange things have happened since updating to 10.8.2, but I don't think this is one of them because of the complaints I have seen that date back to 2010. I did a full maintenance routine, i e cleared RAM, reboot in single user with fsck -fy, repaired permissions, back up with SuperDuper which repairs permissions again. Then I tried Bridge again, original will open, rotated won't.
    Anyone know the answe?

The answer is that making edits in ACR and saving it creates layers in the tiff and Bridge will then not open it again in ACR unless you flatten it. I still don't know why Preview increased the image size by 3.333.....x or why ACR increased the tiff file size by 2.6x and why the flattened tiff is 2x the file size of the original scan but the image dimensions are the same. This stuff apparently is above the pay grade of anyone in google, too.

  • "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory" error?

I've searched the web high and low to resolve this issue, tried many different approaches, and have not been able to resolve it. I'm really looking for help at this point.
I'm trying to export a 5 minute video that I've put together using FCPX 10.0.8. I export "master file" to an external hard drive and at some point in the export process I get the following popup:
    System information:
    13" mid-2011 Macbook Air
Processor  1.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (2GB x2)
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
Hard drive: 256 SSD (107 GB available)
    FCPX project information:
FCPX media is stored on SSD system drive and exporting to external drive
Media is 1080p 24 frame footage shot using a Canon T2i
Total Length of project is 5:13
    Background rendering is off
Proxy media is created for all media but I am exporting original media
    I've tried the following:
Freeing up more hard drive space - I've anywhere from 25 GB to 107 GB free and it does not seem to matter how much free space I have, I still get the error
Repairing system drive - I've repaired permissions with Disk Utility and I've even performed a drive Rebuild using DiskWarrior
Cleaning up FCPX project - I've gone through and deleted all unused media, deleted project and event render files, etc
Cleared RAM - During export I've repeatedly ran MemoryKeeper to clear RAM and free up more memory
System restart before attempting the export and I also boot up holding 'shift' which blocks unnecessary background tasks, dropbox, etc from starting
    Considerations/Observations:
I've exported longer and more complex projects using the same setup with no problem, also with less free disk space
I've never seen this error in any other situation
The error will pop up anywhere from the export being 35% to 98% completed
    Activity Monitor during export:
The only processes that are taking up any considerable memory are FCPX and kernal_task
'% CPU' on FCPX jumps around from 60% or less to 250% or more
    FCPX usually has 83 threads
'Real Memory' for FCPX can be anywhere from 300 MB to 2 GB
It seems that when the export is at about 25% or 30% that is when the computer starts slowing down, 'Free' system memory goes down to mere megabytes, and a ton of swapfiles start to generate in .../var/vm folder which will build up until I'm out of disk space
Sometimes the error will pop up even before I run out of disk space due to the swapfiles. Last time it came up when I still had 40 GB free
Screenshot of Activity Monitor 'System Memory' during a previous attempt to export, taken right as the error popped up:
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me figure this one out!

Like Russ said, your system specs are pretty marginal - especially the 4GB of RAM. As you are experiencing this sometimes gets rapidly depleted, so the system starts to use swap on the system drive - the internal SSD. You have written about freeing hard drive space - do you mean in the external? You really need room in the internal SSD: not for your export, but for system stuff like sleepimage, swap space etc. The error message is pretty clear: you reached a situation where there is not enough space in the SSD for your system to work properly.

  • Burn tool effect still happens when painting with low opacity/flow

i posted this before, and it wasnt resolved. i figured i'd wait for an update for it to be fixed. i'm using a samsung galaxy note 10.1, and i just downloaded the 14.2 andrioid update, and the problem still occurs. please fix this issue. photoshop touch could be the most useful app i own, but, as it is, it is completely unusable for me. when will the next update happen, and will it attempt to fix the brush opacity/ flow burn issue? The more time the paint brush remains unusable, the less familiar i become with photoshop, and the more familiar i become with autodesk sketchbook. I want to like photoshop better, but for now i just could not recommend it to anyone seeking to use it for digital painting.
the dark spots on this image were made without any change in my brush color. i simply made a lighter touch, with the pressure related opacity control on.

So, I realize I'm answering my own post, but just in case anybody else has this issue, this might be helpful. Tonight, I went into task manager (using a galaxy note 10.1...which, in turn, is running on android 4.0.4), touched the RAM manager tab, and pressed the "clear ram" button. i started up photoshop, opened a project that's been pending for some time, and the burn effect was no longer happening. At very least, it was no longer happening at a very noticeable level. So that's my solution. Clear your RAM every time you're about to open Photoshop.
