Clearing the entire screen to see the desktop

I just upgraded to Lion (10.7.3) this evening and am disappointed that one of my most used features is missing. In OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), I had the ability to do a four-finger swipe upward and clear all windows to see the desktop. I tried that in Lion but it only minimizes the windows (much like Exposé). Is there a feature in Lion that allows me to see the entire desktop with all windows "pushed aside"?

Make sure your screen resolution is 1024x768 through your control panel.

  • How to zoom in the icons on the desktop?

    Hello,
    With snow leopard I could zoom in the icons on the desktoop easily with a gesture on the trackpad, but now it doesn´t work?

    This Applescript I threw together will toggle desktop icons. For best results launch from the Applescript menu. If you don't have it enabled you shuld save this script "As Application", then doubleclick it.
    be aware that if you recompile this script while it has stored desktop icon positions it will forget all those positions.
    Click here to launch Script Editor.
    -- http://gnarlodious.com/Apple/AppleScript/Scripts/
    -- run this script once to clear the desktop
    -- run it again to replace all the icons in their ooriginal positions
    property everyItem : missing value
    set screenWidth to word 3 of (do shell script "defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver | sed '/ Width/q' | tail -1") as integer
    set screenHeight to word 3 of (do shell script "defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver | sed '/ Height/q' | tail -1") as integer
    tell application "Finder"
    if everyItem is missing value then
    set everyItem to {name, desktop position} of every item of the desktop
    set everyFile to item 1 of everyItem
    repeat with loopVar from 1 to count of everyFile
    set thisIcon to item loopVar of everyFile
    set desktop position of item thisIcon to {screenWidth, screenHeight + 10}
    end repeat
    else
    set everyFile to item 1 of everyItem
    set everyPosition to item 2 of everyItem
    repeat with loopVar from 1 to count of everyFile
    set thisIcon to item loopVar of everyFile
    set desktop position of item thisIcon to (get item loopVar of everyPosition)
    end repeat
    set everyItem to missing value
    end if
    end tell

    It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
    I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
    So what to do, what to do.
    Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
    I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
    When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
    Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
    The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
    It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
    So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
    The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
    So what you will have to do is this:
    Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
    or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.

  • How do I recover a "complete" folder and place it back onto the desktop screen.

    This has to be a common problem experienced by all Mac desktop users.  I placed
    an entire blue "file folder" (the common blue folders with tab) into the "trash" and
    cannot take it out or delete it.  I did it by accident because I wanted to "delete" a small
    file, within the "entire blue folder".  Apparently I put the "whole folder" in the "trash" instead
    and now cannot take it out.
    I have an exact copy on my desktop already, but I don't want to delete this folder that I
    placed in the "trash".  For now, I just want to recover it and put it back onto the desktop.
    I don't mind having two copies for now.
    To be extra clear, this is the usual blue "file folder" that contains "favorites", "shared", and "devices".
    Within these are "all my files", "desktop", "your personal files", "applications", etc., etc.
    Within these are "photos", "albums", "pictures", "video", and miscellaneous subsets of files.
    This "entire" folder containing all these items are now in the trash.
    I need to know a simple "step by step" process or instructions on how to take all this
    out of the trash and to put it back on the desktop where I can see it on my computer screen
    as a blue "file folder".
    I'm not very computer knowledgeable except to use the internet and knowing how to use
    data entry software.
    So it would be important to explain to me "step by step".  Any small detail left out and I might mess up.
    I know there must be a simple way of doing this.  All I see now is a pile of papers in the "trash" bin and
    no way to get out my "file folder"
    I appreciate all your help.
    Thank you very much.

    You cannot take a folder out of the Trash to your Desktop without erasing the one on the Desktop. You need to first change the name of the folder on the Desktop. Or you can open the folder that's in the Trash and drag the files onto the Desktop assuming there aren't too many of them.
    But if you have a duplicate on the Desktop why do you need to remove the one that's in the Trash?
    If you feel you must take the folder out of the Trash, then you need to rename the duplicate that's on your Desktop.
    If you wish to put the folder back where it was when you deleted it, then open the Trash window, select the folder, then CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select "Put Back" from the context menu.

  • I need my website to span the entire screen but need it to be responsive???

    Ok, i've been looking for a long time for the answer to this but to no avail.... probably because i'm wording it worngly or something.
    I'm building a website for my new home business and i'm using the fluid grid layouts that are native to DW but for the life of me, i can't get my site to fill the entire screen real estate as the grids in DW only seem to allow my site to go so wide.
    How do you make a website responsive the acts like this Adobe site for instance...... fills from one side of my screen to the other... no screen wastage???  I have no idea why i ca't get any info on this, i was sure it would be a common thing people wanted to know in web design???  Granted i'm not a pro web developer (yet hehe) but i'm not dumb and can take on any challenge so feel free to answer in any way that is helpful.
    I need to get this done rather rapidly as we are hoping to go live in 2 months time haha....... thank you all very much well in advance =]

    Just to clarify, you want all content to be flush left with the browser?  This can be difficult to see on some people's devices which is why FGLayouts have a wee bit of wiggle room around the viewport.
    /* Mobile Layout: 480px and below. */
    .gridContainer {
    margin:0 auto;
    padding:0;
    width:99%; /**adjust width as desired**/
    /* Tablet Layout: 481px to 768px. Inherits styles from Mobile Layout. */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 481px) {
    .gridContainer {width: 98%; /**adjust as desired**/}
    /* Desktop Layout: 769px & higher.  Inherits styles from Mobile and Tablet. */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 769px) {
    .gridContainer {width: 92%; /**adjust as desired**/}

    Probably not, since user-caused damage isn't covered by the warranty. But you can take the iPhone to an Apple Store and see if there's anything they can do for you. A phone company store will not service your iPhone at all, to the best of my knowledge.
    Regards.

    Unfortunately, what you describe isn't a common problem. It is pretty surprising, but hopefully it's a simple as clicking or pressing the wrong thing. So, to find this out we need to know, step by step, at the most basic level, what you click or type EXACTLY and what you see. That should let us get to the cause.

    Just updated to 7.1 and now open some apps and cannot see the entire screen because the iPad, time n battery icons are covering top of screen.

    I tried what you said but it still didn't help.
    It only affects some of my apps other apps are fine.
    For some reason in some of my apps the iPad, time and battery icons get bigger on the top of my screen so I can't see the top of the app page which effects some of the games and applications.
    Is there any way to turn these icons off on the top of the screen?

    What do you mean by you "cleaned" it?
    Try booting into Safe Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    If you can boot into Safe Mode, try clearing off some space while booted there.

  • When I make a mis-stroke screen images balloon up to fill the entire screen. how can I return them to normal?

    I don't know what I do to make the image blow up. They don;t fill the entire screen, but fill up the normal-sized screen. This has happened on two sites. How can I get them back to normal.

    Is this on Android or on the desktop? On Android, try double-tapping to zoom back out. On the desktop, to reset zoom, try Ctrl+0 (that's a zero).
