Clearing up HD space

hello everybody!
got my macbook not too long ago and im loving it!
one small questino i have is about my HD space... i got a 60GB HD and ive only got 31.64 GB free (this is after about 7 gigs of programs have been installed including office etc as well as the basic ilife programs and some others) I was wondering is there a way that i can free up some space? is there like a huge chunk of uselessness that i can get rid of or do i just have to accept that with the programs and basics of tiger that it takes up about 25 gigs of memory?

There are several posts on this topic already. One of which is here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=533148
basically:
60Gb is never really 60GB, it formats to around 55GB (there's 5 GB gone already)
Lots of programs that come with OSX are massive, and if you don't use them, you may as well uninstall. Examples: Garageband, iDVD. (It is not the programs themselves that are massive but garagebands huge instrument library and iDVD's themes.) ~ 4-5GB
Also, OSX comes with printer drivers for huge numbers of printers, a lot of which you probably won't use. ~ 1GB
OSX comes with lots of different languages installed, if English is your only language you may as well remove them. ~1GB
Best way to remove: Fresh install of OSX. Click customize when reinstalling and you can select what to install.
You can of course search around your Hard Drive for printer drivers/garageband iDVD etc. (Most of the big stuff is in Users->Library or just Macintosh HD->Library). You can remove languages with a program called monolingual. But in my opinion it is easier to reinstall - but don't forget to backup first.

I deleted all my photos and videos and then delete the deleted files but the photo app is still taking up 12 GB of space and I have no room for new stuff.  How can I clear the memory space used by my deleted videos and photos?  I don't know why the photos are still taking up space and if I will have to reset my phone to get rid of the problem.

    Hey there TowneJ,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article linked below provides troubleshooting tips that’ll likely resolve the issue that you’ve described, where deleted files appear to be taking up space on your iPhone 5.

  • Are my photos on my iPad stored somewhere else, I'd like to clear up some space on my iPad 2

I need to clear up some space for a new upgrade, but my photos are taking up too much space. Are they also stored in iTunes?

Photos are not stored in iTunes.
If you use a computer to sync with your iPad, the photos in your camera roll on your iPad can easily be copied to the computer. Use what ever application you have on the computer for copying photos from a camera. When you start that application and connect your iPad to the computer the iPad will be recognized as a camera.

What can I get rid off to clear the most space on my iPhone 4?

Photos and videos usually take a lot of space. You can import them from the Camera Roll to a computer and delete them all from the phone or keep some if desired. If you delete and later decide you want some of them back on the phone you can sync them back via iTunes. • Clear empty disk space

When I use Disk Utility to Erase free space on my hard disk my whole mac grind to a holt with constant messages of 'your HD is almost full' - now it's obviously to do with how it clears the disk space but is there any way of stopping in grinding to a holt so early in the process and not alowing any apps to work?

Why are you erasing blank space?
If you are getting a hard drive full error, then you need to delete some files. You need ~10% of your hard drive free for the System and applications to work their behind the scenes magic.
Disk Utility is usually run to fix problems, if you have other applications open DU will very aggressively take control of your hard drive. Don't run it with other applications open!

    What's eating it up?

    WORD TO THE WISE
the OmniDiskSweeper was a very helpful download, because it laid out the HD and all the files on it in a "largest to smallest" fashion. When I did this I found that I had an inordinate amount of memory being taken up in my Mail Data folder, this did not make much sense so when I dug deeper I found that a 59MB scanned file that I had emailed 3 weeks ago had not been delivered, so the computer was retrying every minute and saving the history of what it was doing, so it was saving the 59MB file as well as the log about the 59MB file and hence for the last 3 weeks it's been chewing away at HD space recording the activity of the undeliverable file.
I deleted the Data record folders and removed the yahoo account from My Mail and reinstalled it with proper IMAP information and the HD is secure and holding at 331GB of free space. Like it ought to be.
I love the fact that if something very strange is happpening on your MAC there is a REASON....find it and fix it, and move on. In the PC world you would reboot 20 times, call some guy in India who will ony try to sell you a new subscription or warranty for $99 and never solve anything.
I am at rest once more, thanks for the tip

  • How to clear "other" storage space

How do you clear storage space taken up by "other"?

To do that you will need to restore your phone:
If You Are Locked Out, Have Forgotten Your Passcode, or Just Need to Restore Your Device
    1. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
    2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    3. iOS- Understanding passcodes
    4. What to Do If You've Forgotten Your iPhone's Passcode
    5. How to Recover Forgotten iPhone Restrictions Passcode | The iPhone and iPad
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the
Back Up option. If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary
              to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore or have forgotten your restrictions passcode, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.

  • How to clear hard drive space?

my hard drive is "full" i need a way to clear space or compress files, without taking them off of my computer, Ive already put all my photos and movies on an external hard drive all thats left is 25 gigs of music and applications really. hard drive is 80g. I cant have my external hard drive all the time and i need space on the laptop in general, thanks for any help

i said right there, that i didnt want to move any more stuff off of the computer, ill dump trash or compress files, but i need to make room.
Not being a smartass, but somtimes it doesn't matter what you want.
If you can't clear enough space you may have to move more files off, or buy a larger internal drive.

This is not tested on Tiger, but there may be an equivilent.

  • Trying to clear up disk space

I'm trying to clear space on my hard drive, i´m using what size to find large files. It´s found in my home directory a temporary files folder containing around 4gigs of audio/video ts files, however i can't find these using a regular search. Why is this

If the files or the folder start with a dot, then OS X will skip over them. If that's not the case, then it may just be that search is flaky. If you search the forums, you'll find other posts where people have had issues with it. I use EasyFind myself.

  • Deleting iTunes files to clear up HD space

My HD was full, so I deleted 25GB of music by dragging the  "itunes" folder and all of its contents into the trash.  I then emptied the trash, but no disk space freed up on my HD.  Before I deleted the files, I copied them to an external HD.  Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I'd like to clear up that 25GB....any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Did you delete the correct iTunes folder from your user account?
Restart the computer and see if the HD space gets corrected. You can also direct your iTunes to point the the Library on the external drive through the iTunes preferences/Advanced.

  • Backing up to external drive, and questions about "clearing up" hd space..?

    iPhoto 6. Specs are below.
I have about 7,000 photos, and I have to clear out my hd to create more space.
I have "backed-up" my hd using "super duper" and an external firewire seagate pro drive and now need to clear out space on the internal drive on my G4.
    Here are my questions/concerns:
How do I go about deleting my photos off of my internal hd?
I want to continue to use iphoto, but need to delete my current photos from it, in order to free up space.
Will I be able to get access to this drive in, say 10 years from now?
Will it be safe to store in the closet?
When I go to back-up iphoto, will it add my "new" pictures to the old pictures I saved?
My concerns are longevity, and to be able to access these in the future.
Should I be looking at another process? Back-up to DVD?
    Thanks for your help!!!!
Feel free to ask me questions as well. These are very important photos, actually ANYONE'S photos are important......just want them safe for the future.

You can run an entire library from that external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Now, when you add new pics, that's where they will go - obviously, as long as the disk is attached to your Mac and not in the closet
The longevity of storage is a matter of some debate. Optical media (CD & DVD) are rated in years, but none have been around long enough to know if those ratings are accurate. My solution to that problem is to burn a copy of my library to DVD twice a year, so that gets renewed every six months or so. I also upload my library to FLICKR.
I guess the point of backing up is that it's an ongoing process, not a single event.

  • Clearing up storage space

    Hi-
I have been working on a large film project on my new MacBook (OS 10.5.1) that has put a lot of temporary information in my storage. Now it is so full I cannot continue burning the project until I clear it up. Can someone walk me through so that I can get to the temporary file where I can find previous film that I have burned and is now clogging up my system? I used iMovie and iDVD to create the previous project. Thanks!
    Anne

    Hello there rsylviana,
It sounds like you are unable to use your phone because settings keeps indicating that you have 0 space available on it. If settings is misreporting the space, I would start by quitting all the running apps on the device:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If that does not resolve the issue I would use the steps in the following article for further assist you:
iOS: "Not enough free space" alert when trying to sync
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How do I clear the blank space between content and footer?

In the process of revising a Muse website, I deleted some content from one of the pages and revised the content that remained on the page. Now I have a blank area between the bottom of the revised content and the top of the footer, and I can't seem to get rid of the blank space. It doesn't appear that there are any text blocks or other images in that area, so I can't find any objects to delete. Help?
The website is currently published in a draft mode for client review. You can examine it at: http://page7creative.com/clients/coremove_jun2012draft/retreats.html. The page in question is the Retreats page. Restarting Muse made no difference. I work on the Mac platform.
Before I sent this post, I decided to try creating a new page, then copy/paste the content onto the new page, and save the Muse site under a different name. Lo and behold, the page (and the site) works like it should...without any extra space above the footer on that page. It would appear that something went astray when I deleted content on that page. I can use the new page to get the site working properly, but decided to go ahead and send this post so that you can look at the page code and perhaps see what is wrong that is causing the blank space...in case I ever run into this again.
    Thank you.
    pyxis83

    Thanks for sending your file.
There is a graphic at the bottom of the content area of the Retreats page that's been cropped to a size of zero width and 2 pixels in width.
Unfortunately, there's a bug with pointer tool drag selection (aka marque selection) that prevents it from selecting an item that has zero width or zero height. Therefore the easiest way to select this item to delete it is to select any other item on the page, then hit the tab key repeatedly to cycle through every item on the page. When you get to this item you should see a little pile of selection handles at the left edge of the third column and right at the bottom of the content area. The width and height will display as zero and 2. Delete this item and the page will resize to fit the remaining content.

No clue what you're talking about. What's "face library"?
    any suggestion would be helpful
Get an external hard drive. (Better than regrets when you've deleted pics and video clips you want, but you'll never get back.)

My (shared) iMessages are taking up almost all my iPhone storage. Is there a way to remove them to free up space on my phone?

Thx - the videos are on my Ipad - that is the problem - they are taking up all the storage and there is no room for anything else. Is there any place I can store them so that I can access them from time to time, but not have they use up all the space on the IPad? Sounds like the cloud is out...

  • Suggestions for clearing up disc space?

I'm runnning low on disc space on my MacBook Pro and it's starting to run pretty slow. Aside from the obvious deleting files, what can I do to get my MacBook running like new again?

John Hammer makes an excellent point. You can get rid of unneeded applications, for example, but the size of applications is relatively small compared to media files.
I save my "excess" files on two Seagate portable drives. One 500GB drive is about $50, on a good price. They can last a long time.
Post here if you have any questions or comments.
