Click syndrome

Anyone old enough to remember the click syndrome in the mid 90's that the Iomega Jaz drives had?
I think it's back in the G-RAID's
The syndrome was a click, hang, click, hang the system.
If you then took that drive or media to another system, you would just pass the click syndrome on to that system.
I had the same problem with my 500gig G-RAID from g- technologies (used to be owned by Medea)
I have gone through three replacement drives thinking it was a bad disc. Then I took the drive and put it on my home machine to test it out. At first It worked fine and then Click, hang, click hang. The new drive starts clicking again.
So far I can't find anyone old enough or in the business long enough to know what I'm talking about.

I got my G-Raid for free so I'm not complaining...
My wife won it at Macworld SF last month and handed right over to me. It works great and yes I hear the clicking too but it's not the same click of death that Jaz and Zip drives had in the old days. I do remember that, the difference with the G-Raid is "that it still works" regardless of the clicking. I think that's the hardware RAID controller putting the drives to sleep, you have no control over that. I'll take a hardware RAID over a software one any day of the week. I think G-Technologies makes some really nice products, I just wish their newest toy (G-Raid Pro) had a eSATA interface instead of a Firewire 800. If it wasn't for that, I'd be all over that one.
Now back to the clicking, I can hardly hear it with my other 12 hard drives whirring up a storm next to the G-Raid.

• When will Apple address their Right Click syndrome?

Do a search for "Right Click" on the Apple forum and you will find 2741 entrys on this subject. People are actually wondering how to right click? On the web you can find entire articles on the subject, like "4 ways to right click on the Mac" http://www.wikihow.com/Right-Click-on-a-Mac.
The "right click" function differs between softwares, it may be CTRL, CMD, ALT or two fingers on the trackpad.
How did we get here? Why are there even different ways to right click??
I mean its fine that there are ways to get context menus, but there is no coherency here. I know that Mac is all about design, but this is really bad design. (Yes, I admit it looks clean.)
It reminds me about one time I wanted to use a shower at a hotel. There was a faucet and a shower head and no matter what I did, I could only get water in the faucet, not the shower. This was a single knob solution, turn it to get water, turn more to get warmer water. I later found out that you could also pull it to get the shower working, but I think you got my point. That was just bad design.
It took decades to get rid of the Chooser, which incidentally was also bad design. How many decades will we wait for another mouse button on a mac laptop?

"Right click" - a PC invention, has always been control-click.  You can adjust trackpad preferences to use two fingers to get the same thiing.   It doesn't seem very complicated to me.

• How to disable the print "ALL" feature for users?

Is there a way to limit the user from printing an entire Adobe Acrobat  document by accident.  We have many documents that are 50 pages and more  and often times, the user only needs to print several pages but because  of CCS (Continual Clicking Syndrome), they blast right through the  print menu and send the whole document to the printer.
The easiest way would be to disable the "ALL" feature (radio button) in  the "Print Range" field.  However, I do not know if that is available or  if there is code I can enter in each document.

It's not possible.
However, you can create buttons on your document that "help" the user print
just a part of the document: a certain page range, just the current page,
etc.

• H.D. Clicks When Booting But Disk Utility Says "No Problems"

My friend installed a new 300 gig Seagate on his G4 a couple of months ago. It has worked fine until now. Suddenly, it won't boot up from the HD -- just clicks. He gets the spinning ball and it freezes up. HOWEVER: (1) The icon does appear on the desktop and (2) When he starts up from the CD and runs Disk Utility, D.U. recognizes the H.D., checks it successfully, and reports "No Problems Found." He can hear it spin up and everything just fine when he is checking it with Disk Utility.
So, it seems to go into the "clicking and spinning ball syndrome" only when he is trying to boot up from it. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Clicking noise, power LED flickers

I'm troubleshooting a friend's 17" PowerBook G4. The orange LED on the power adapter plug flickers when plugged into the PowerBook. It also makes a clicking noise, dead center inbetween the 2 fans, on the bottom side of the motherboard, closest to the screen. The battery charges but quickly discharges, the fans keep running, and the clicking noise persists at a lower level than when on A/C power.
I've disassembled the PowerBook but have not removed the motherboard (thought I'd post here first before wasting my time). What are the possible problems, and do they involve replacing the motherboard? What would be the cheapest source? Thanks in advance.

Dear John,
Just letting you know that I am experiencing the same problem. The symptoms are slightly more complex though. It seems that it is related to the battery, or switching between battery power and adapter. The battery is fully charged, yet I can not run the laptop from the battery. With one of my power adapters the led will start flashing and the comp won't boot. It will start correctly from the power adapter only if I first remove the battery. With another adapter it doesn't flicker and only starts with the battery installed. I doubt that replacing the battery will solve the problem. Until very recently it worked perfectly, the led indicators show a full battery and the computer diagnoses its state correctly.
I'm afraid the problem is in the motherboard. Replacing it is expensive and probably not worth the money for a two year old machine. Given the large number of related and other reported problems (check e.g. for narcoleptic syndrome) it is likely to generate new problems quite soon anyhow. I'll have the machine checked one of these days and let you know what the diagnosis is.
Keep us informed,
Thanks

1. What's the difference between private mode in Safari which i have to turn on every time again when opening safari.
It's a two click activity which i would love to be able to set in the preference as default. It's tyering when have to do it everyday a few times. (Yes, i'm one of many who have the "i like safari but since the update crash everyday a few times" syndrome...
Yes, i have updated my system.
Yes, i have repared disk permissions with disk utility.
Am open for any other help in both cases. Thank you upfront
2. and the "tell websites not to track me" under Safari - Preference - Privacy.

That box should prevent websites using trackers to log your movements on the Web to benefit advertisers. I have no idea if it does.
Safari can keep your browsing history private. When you turn on private browsing, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information, so your partner cannot see where you have been, but you must also remember to also turn off acceptance of cookies.
In all other respects Private Browsing is not as private as you might think:
http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/how-to-make-safaris-private-browsing-fea ture-actually-private/
http://www.insanely-great.com/news.php?id=9054
and then Apple's own advice from here: http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/privacy_safari.html
"Note that the Private Browsing option does not prevent Safari from collecting cookies (the preference files automatically generated by many websites). The Reset Safari option clears all cookies. If you want to delete only certain ones, choose Preferences from the Safari menu, click the Security tab, and then click Show Cookies. You can select and delete individual cookies from the list that appears. Careful, though — if you’re a frequent web user, this list can be very, very long."
which is itself incomplete, the relevant part being 'If you want to delete only certain ones.
To that end it is useful to have Safari Cookies installed, which is the only cookie manager available for Safari:
http://sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/
which automatically deletes all cookies not marked as 'favourites' when closing Safari. It does the same for Flash Cookies, but they are subject for themselves:
From this website:
http://machacks.tv/2009/01/27/flushapp-flash-cookie-removal-tool-for-os-x/
For those who do not know about Flash cookies, more properly referred to as Local Shared Objects (LSO), they operate in a similar way to regular browser cookies but are stored outside the purview of your browser, meaning you cannot delete them from within your browser, whether Safari, Firefox, Opera or any other. Typically they are issued from sites or 3rd party sites that contain Adobe Flash content. Since virtually all internet advertising is  delivered in Flash, Google/Doudleclick and all other internet advertising companies are sure to be tracking your browsing behavior with Flash cookies. These companies can see you traverse the Internet as you come upon the plethora of sites that contain their embedded advertising. Check out the Wikipedia entry here.
In Mac OS X they are stored in the following location:
/User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects
The settings for the Flash cookies are stored in:
/User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys
In OS X Local Shared Objects, or Flash Cookies, are appended with a .sol suffix. Flush deletes all the Flash cookies (.sol) and their settings.
Flush can be downloaded from that page.
If you want to retain certain Flash cookies but not others, the excellent add-on for Safari called SafariCookies now includes a setting for automatically deleting flash cookies you don't want to retain, when Safari is shut down, in the same as it deals with ordinary cookies:
http://www.sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/index.htm
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff!
This article covers the issue in more depth:
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/08/you-deleted-your-cookies-think-again/
Flash cookies are also known as 'Zombie Cookies' and are used by a number of firms, including Hulu, MTV, and Myspace. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at the internet security firm Sophos, told BBC News that the source of the trouble was Adobe Flash itself, which he called "one of the weirdest programs on the planet".
"I think it's highly unlikely that these large companies have abused Flash cookies - which are different from browser cookies - with malicious intent," he said.
"I think it's much more likely that the vast majority of users are simply oblivious to the bizarre way in which Adobe allows them to configure the software."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10787882
And a more recent article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/technology/21cookie.html?_r=3&scp=1&sq=flash&s t=cse
Tracker cookies and the invisible web:
– tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons that are included on web pages in order to get an idea of your online behavior.
Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.
http://www.ghostery.com/about
This provides an extension to Safari (also available for other browsers) that shows you what data tracking is active on each web page you visit, and enables you to block them.

• Clicking on Year view to get Week view in iCal

In the  Lion version, is there any way I can double click a date and get to the 'week view' rather than the 'day view'?

CaptainStarwars,
Try using (⌘+C) and then (⌘+V). That action retains the event in the original, while also placing a duplicate in the new location.
If you want to remove the event from the original time, use (⌘+X), then (⌘+V) in the new time frame.

Did you check the Zoom setting?
Have you tried a reset (reboot)? Hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears.
If it isn't Zoom and a reboot doesn't help try Settings/General/Reset - Reset all settings

You've probably found an answer to this by now, but I think this has been addressed in another forum -- The link below suggested using a button and adding the tooltip to the button.

• Just installed Firefox 4. It hangs when I open any website and type in, for example, an ID, or even just click on something, for example, "Compose", in my webmail site.

Here's the detail of what happens.
1. Turn on computer and then click on Firefox icon on desktop.
2. Firefox opens. Everything looks OK. Mr Bunsen's graphic is working fine.
3. Click on any webpage link. For example, a newspaper or an online webmail page. All looks OK until
4. Click on anything or type anything, such as in ID in a box, and bingo, the top line of Firefox goes from dark blue to very pale blue and the computer is hung. You cannot get out of Firefox or get Firefox to work.
5. Switch off computer.
Is this perhaps due to a clash of Add-ons. I run Avast anti-virus. McAfee came with Firefox 4 and I did not reject it. Is it conflicting wth something in my system and causing it to hang?
