Click wheel and buttons on ipod dont respond

After not using my Ipod for a few months i recently got it out and put new music on it only to find out that click/wheel and buttons dont respond. The button lock works but that is all. The ipod sits at the language select screen until the screen fades.

Yeah i have the exact same problem! i dont know what to do! My closest apple shop is birmingham and from what the other guy said it made no sense. if you have it sorted please let me know on what to do.
thanks george

  • Click wheel and button malfunction!!

The play/pause button on my click wheel seems to be unleveled compared to the rest of the wheel. When I look at it lengthwise, the play/pause area is lower than the rest. I noticed today that I had trouble turning off my nano because of the button.
Also the center button moves around and so it seems that there is wiggle space. Does anyone else have these problems?

Sorry I must apologize about my last post, I realized the issue with the centre button and it may not be a design flaw. I looked at another iPod, an iPod mini, and saw that the same issue existed. Then realized that if there was no give then the two components, the click wheel and center button would constantly be rubbing against each other and this would cause bigger problems.

  • IPod 4 Buttons - A1040 model number - Click wheel and buttons faulty

I have this old iPod which seemed to have a dodgy battery. I had the battery changed but it turns out that it seems to be the four buttons and click wheel that is faulty. I can occassionally use the 4 buttons but they are temperamental and the click wheel does not work at all. Anyone else experienced this or know a fix?

Since no one here or on any website I've searched has had a good fix for the hang at the language selection screen I thought I'd update this post. I just received and installed a new main board for my 5g ipod. That fixed the problem. It now works as designed.

  • Click wheel and buttons don't work on 5th gen.

I have had my iPod for about half a year and for some reason my iPod buttons don't work. If I move the hold button it turns on but none of the other buttons work. It charges and everything. Does anyone know what to do?

There isn't any problem with your ipod, theres just a different way of going about when you put video games on your ipod. First, plug in your ipod. when your ipod icon appears on the left side where it usually does, click on it. Look at the top on the ipod screen that appears. The screen should give u info about your ipod. At the top look for an icon that says games. Pictures and a few other things are there but click on games. Once that screen appears click on the check mark that say sync games. After that it is pretty self explanatory. GoodLuck

I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!

You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

  • TS1382 4th gen iPod nano wheel and buttons still non-responsive after all t-shooting suggestions performed.

    Hello all,
My beautiful 1 year old daughter pull my nano off a Bose speaker dock and ever since the wheel and buttons have been non-responsive.  I've tried a rest and all troubleshooting steps with no luck.  Does anyone out there have any other suggestions?  Thanks.
    Mike

Mine is no longer responding to anything but when it's connected to the computer, it will restore and sync, but I cannot turn it off, play music or anything else and I would really like to know a solution for this as well!

  • Touch wheel and buttons don't work

Touch wheel and buttons dont work. Ipod works with my Alpine car stereo, while using the stereos selector wheel. Sometimes the Ipod tries to work normally, but the buttons still won't work.

You might want to try the five R's
    iPod Issues?
These five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    1. Reset your iPod.
    2. Retry with a different USB port.
    3. Restart your computer.
    4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
    5. Restore your iPod.
If none of these work, the easiest thing to do is go to the "great" Apple store they know everything overthere.

  • 5G click wheel MIDDLE BUTTON STUCK!!!

WOW. i mean i just got my new 60GB black video ipod from the store.
i played with it a bit after transfering all my data onto it.
then the middle button got stuck inside!
its surrounded by the click wheel, and its sunken in.
i have tried to push it back up anyway i could find, but using needles is hard. and it's screwing my brand new ipod, which looks bad right now.
i am too **** far to go back to the store now... [really far!]
never heard of this problem... any ideas ???

Actually you are not the first. The same thing happened to my 4th generation 20gig. About 7 months after I got it. The middle button still worked but was stuck down. It caused some stange behaviors when I would navigate the iPod and when I finally got tired of dealing with it I took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it on the spot. As long as it's still covered don't mess with it, just bring it back.

  • Loose click-wheel centre button?

Apologies if this has been posted before.
I received my Black 4GB Nano yesterday, and the click-wheel centre button seems a little dodgy.
Whilst it functions fine, its loose, by this I mean it turns about 2-3 degrees in each direction, giving a horrible "feel" to the clicking action.
I just wanted to know if this was the norm amongst iPod's (this being my first) of if I should contact apple and get it replaced.
    Many thanks for any advice

Looks like it is the norm, phoned Apple and they replaced it, received my replacement today and it's the same, if just a little bit better than the last one. I will not be returning it!
Incidently, I was massively immpressed with Apple's level of customer service, absolutely first class.

Can one tell me if the games for iPod with Click Wheel with the 6G iPod compatible?

No, the clickwheel games are for certain clickwheel only generations. There are no games for the nano 6 (yet)!

  • My click wheel and select button are unresponsive

    hi
I've had my iPod mini for just over a year now and I've had one or two problems in the past. However, I've been able to reset it by holding the select button and menu button. However, today my iPod's click wheel will not respond (and doesn't make it's usual noise) and my select button is unresponsive so I can't reset. Plus my almost full battery has just drained in less than 20 minutes. Are there any tips for restoring my iPod?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try connecting it to the AC adapter after the battery is drained and resetting it. Also, is it turning on?
Finally, does it connect to your computer? Try resetting it while it is connected to the computer.

  • I updated my 20G iPod with click wheel and now it wont turn on all the way

Ok so I updated my 20G iPod with click wheel with the latest version (three point something), and now when i try to turn it on, it shows the apple logo and then has a pic of an ipod being plugged into a power adapter being plugged into a wall socket. i have reset it about 40 times and it always does the same thing. i have tried to charge the ipod with my computer but it does absolutely nothing (i dont have a power adapter). Also, when i reset my ipod WHEN IT IS PLUGGED INTO THE COMPUTER, it shows the "Very low battery" picture. Also, my computer does not see the iPod in "my computer" or iTunes. I have another iPod, which works perfectly on my computer. I thank anyone who tries to help me.
    Windows XP

You must have a charge of your iPod with an ac charger, in order to complete the Restore process.
You can also charge your iPod with
    1. iPod car charger
    2. iPod speaker dock system e.g. iPod HiFi or Bose soundstage

  • Click wheel and center button

for the last few weeks my click wheel will periodically not respond. sometimes it works, and sometimes it wont work. the centerbutton is the same way. the lower portion of the click wheel is slightly indented, i thought initally that it was a heat problem. here in savannah GA it gets really hot and i thought that it wouldnt recognize the heat difference or something. i am really hoping someone helps me out.

Well I have THREE 1st gen iPod nanos that ignore the click wheel. I am beginning to speculate that there is a quality issue with these because when I gently flex the PCB near the click wheel connector then the click wheel will function. I am wondering if anyone successfully fixed this. You need a TINY soldering iron and a microscope to see the tiny components. I conjecture that there is a lousy solder joint on one of the tiny components causing an intermittent connection. If I get super lucky, I will then post my results!!!!

  • Click Wheel Problem on 4G Ipod

    Hi,
Recently my 4G Ipod scroll wheel has stopped responding to touch scroll-buttons work fine. Reviewed posts to see this is a common problem. I have had some success but need more advice.
    This is what I did
    1. Reset, Restore etc- did not make wheel scroll
    2. Opened up Ipod, lifted up battery and cleaned areas on back of click wheel including tape like connector. Also used compressed air. In general not dirty at all.
--At this point my click wheel now responds to touch but after drilling down on a choice and then back up to main menu it stops responding.
--However if i toggle hold switch it "fixes" it for a short while--previously this did nothing to fix it so a bit better.
    3. I do not have the proper screwdrive to remove circuit board so don't want to do that just yet. BTW where do i get one?
    4. Put Ipod into diagnostic and ran WHEEL test. The numbers move from 0 to 95 suggesting that the click wheel is not broken however this works intermittently also. But if i toggle hold in diagnostic mode then the click wheel works for a short while.
Should I bother trying to further breakdown the ipod to clean the wheel etc?
Any other contact points I should clean?
Why does the toggle switch fix it for a short time?
Would changing out the click wheel fix the problem?
    Please help!

If this isn't a hardware issue, I would recommend toggling the hold switch back and forth then trying the reset again. If that doesn't resolve it, I would try restoring the iPod to make sure it's not software.
If none of that resolves it, though, it will likely be an issue with the hardware and you'd want to set it up for service if you're still in warranty (but from what I know, this model is probably out of warranty).
