Click wheel frozen

Hi folks,
I have a nano chromatic, which has been fine for a while but today the click wheel is not responding.
It responds as normal if I shake it (ie it shuffles and starts playing a random song), however none of the buttons work. I can't even turn it off!
I have managed to reset it a few times using menu+select but it doesn't make a difference (at least I know the buttons are physically fine).
I charged it overnight on a Logitech ipod speaker system which I don't use very often. When I discovered the problem I docked it back into the speakers and it responded fine to the speakers' remote control, but still refused to respond to its own controls.
I have tried plugging it into my work computer (no itunes) and properly disconnecting it, but that made no difference as well.
caveat: because I own an ancient ibook G4, I have only managed to update my ipod once through an old windows PC at home which I haven't convinced to boot up for a while. It was an epic effort since all my music is on a mac formatted external HD. As a result, I usually charge my Ipod by plugging it into my work computer (windows) which does not have itunes (and I cannot install itunes on it). I bought the speakers mostly so I could charge it during the christmas holidays. Accordingly, the remaining steps in the "5 rs" are not open to me.
Any suggestions?

hi! i have mostly the same problem. I use my ipod quite a bit but one day i turned it on and started listening to music and the wheel froze so then the battery went dead. but the next morning i charged it and it worked fine. i listened to 3 songs and the wheel froze again. i tried wipeing it off but it still didnt work i wish there would be some solution. my warrenty expieres on december 17,09 but i dont know if i should send it in or if there is just away to get it to work fine. i really need help.
thanks, katelynn

  • Click wheel frozen while docked

All of a sudden, after 7 mos of no problems, my 3rd gen nano click wheel will no longer work while docked to my dock at home or in the car. I have been using it with both for at least 4 months and have never had this problem. I have tried both types of resets, have downloaded the most recent software, have made sure the lock switch is not engaged, and its still having the problem. After resetting it, the click wheel works fine with the earbuds (always has), but as soon as I plug it into either dock, no longer. It will still play, but can't use the click wheel. Anyone have this problem? Any solutions?? Please help!!

The screen freezes on whatever is playing (a podcast, song, etc..). It freezes at the point the song or podcast is at when I put it in the dock. Even if the podcast or song finishes, the screen is still completetly stuck at the point it was when I put the ipod in the dock.

  • Old 20 gb ipod (click wheel) frozen in restore... HELP PLEASE!!!!!

it worked just fine when i first plugged it into my conputer on i tunes. i restored it, worked just fine, then it told me to unplug it from the computer and plug it into a wall charger. so i did, and it just shows a screen that is a wall charger going into a wall outlet. it wont do anything else but that picture. i dont know if it just isnt finished restoring or what the deal is. its starting to **** me off. any ideas on how to resolve this problem without me throwing it into the ocean?????

Same iPod, about 5 yrs old. Will be working, then stop. Doesn't seem to recognize that it is plugged into wall - tells me that it is out of batt life.
Why would it not recognize that it is plugged in to wall? Why does it not recharge?
Is it possible that it simply is dying a slow death due to long term use?
I was told by someone (not a mac user) that they have a shelf life and that eventually they will stop running.
Since when does House current not charge the batt?

  • The infamous problem of the Click Wheel getting frozen

Since I've read a lot of stuff on the internet about this very common problem, and that nobody has found a solution, I wanted to start this topic in order to solve it through different experiences in the community.
I live in Spain, but bought my iPod nano in Canada last October, and I noticed the click wheel problem since the very beginning. Sometimes it got frozen, so I used the Hold Button to “reset” it and it worked again, but I have to say that it was very annoying to get this stuff stucked from time to time.
But in December, it started to get frozen more frequently, and now it happens every time I turn the iPod on. It responds to shaking, so I shake it and start listening to it in random play, and after some minutes (may be an hour, or may be never), and after many “Hold Switch slides”, I get it back working properly again. It normally keeps working fine for a while, but suddenly it can get frozen again.
Here is a list of observations I’ve made, despite the problem seems to be very randomly (sometimes it fixes 2 min before turning on, sometimes it gets an hour, sometimes it never unfreeze):
-Some people have said that it’s a moisture problem. Well, it is happening here, where humidity is high, but I was in a very dry place for Xmas and it happened the same way. But the fact that it works when it is hot rather than when it is cold is in support of this hypothesis.
-Some people say it’s some dirt between the wheel and the contacts. I tried cleaning the borders of the wheel and it didn’t worked.
-If I charge it full, it works immediately, but for a while
-Sometimes I turn it on and immediately touch the wheel and it works, but 1 sec latter it isn’t working again. Sometimes I turn it on and it doesn´t work at all.
-Of course I tried the “5 R’s” and a full restore. Reinstallation and updates of iPod software doesn’t work either.
    SO:
    1- Any suggestions?
2- Is Apple going to do something with this? (the problem is here since iPod Nano 2G). I’ve read somewhere that their policy is to tell you that the iPod is so cheap that you can buy another one (but it seems that is a serial problem so that irrational answers will not work)

    Some points to ponder:
It is very difficult to determine from Internet reports how common a problem really is for any product with a very high sales volume. If millions are sold, hundreds of reports still just represent a tiny fraction of them. Generally, if a problem really is inherent in its design or manufacture, a very high return rate follows & the maker is forced to correct it to stay in business.
Internet reports also suffer from the problem of not always providing enough info to determine if the issue is exactly the same in each report, or if it has the same cause. Quite often there are a number of "me too" reports that list no details or are too vague to determine much. Sometimes a follow up reveals that user error, abuse, or post-manufacturing damage is involved in some of the reports.
This is not meant to imply that real problems in design or manufacture don't exist, only that it isn't a good idea to make overly broad assumptions about commonality without sufficient information.
You have provided a lot of useful info about your own experience, enough to rule out some of the theories & to make others seem much less likely. But it is still important to consider that those theories may explain some of the reports & that the same symptom does not mean the same cause must always be involved.
With that out of the way, here is what I see as a synopsis of the symptoms you observe:
    • The frozen scroll wheel problem was intermittent but occurred from day one of ownership
    • It got worse over time & now occurs every time the iPod (Nano?) is powered up
    • Toggling the Hold switch repeatedly seems to temporarily cure the problem
    • Performing the 5 R's has no effect
    • Cleaning the borders of the wheel has no effect (details?)
    • The problem doesn't occur if the iPod is fully charged (details?)
    • Weather effects may be involved somehow but not in an obvious way
If this is accurate, it would be useful to know how many other users see any of the same things, or if they see something substantially different.
Also, note that the participants in this forum are just users & cannot know what if anything Apple will do about this issue. The terms of use prohibit our discussing Apple policy so all we can do here is try to uncover as many facts as we can about when the symptoms occur & what does & doesn't work to resolve them.

  • Refurbished 4th gen. frozen and click wheel unresponsive.

    Hey all,
So I just got a "new" refurbished 4th Gen. ipod. (only one day!!)
My delima seems to be that it is frozen on the main menu.
I tried to do the unfrozen bit, and it has worked temporarily. However, I am unable to sroll through the click wheel to select songs.
Then, when I connect it to my AC power supply. It remains frozen and on top of that-- the screen turns dark black, so I can't seem to see what is going.
*The night before, I had it on ihome- to listen to on stereo speakers and this charges it it as well. Could it be related to this somehow?
It won't read on the computer either....
I really don't wanna do a restore, because I am away at college and my brother loaded the songs up for me, so I won't have a way to upload until I return home.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks.

    To clarify my issue.
It seems as though, my ipod only works when plugged into a power source.
After unplugging it-- even though with full power it will freeze and not play songs.
Any clue on what's going on?

  • Frozen click wheel

My IPOD has a frozen click wheel which is stuck on the language screen. I have done the "unfreeze" method, restart, and restore, all of which get me right back to the frozen language screen. Is there anything else I can try or should I buy a new IPOD. Mine is about 4 years old?

ok, so my dad and I played around with it and after restoring it about 5 times and rebooting it like 20 times, we finally got it to work, but i'm not sure how long it will last. has anyone else experienced this problem?

  • Frozen iPod 10Gb Click Wheel

    Hi,
I have a faithful iPod 10GB click wheel, which is about 4 and 1/2 years old. It has never crashed or been troublesome until today. I plugged it in to my PowerBook to charge it (it wasn't flat, but has a poor battery storage ability). iTunes wasn't open (never been a problem before, sometimes it opens sometimes not, tis a fickle thing) and I was using Firefox. I glanced down at it and it is frozen with Do Not Disconnect, 2 battery bars lit up and the updating wheel in the corner stuck.
I have tried the 5 Rs to no avail. I have the latest iTunes software (updated yesterday), but the thing wont unfreeze.
Other than letting it go flat have you any ideas?

If you don't want to wait for it to go flat, you could open it up (carefully) and disconnect the battery.
For details on this, see The iPod Battery Unplugged.

  • My click wheel has frozen on my nano

I have had my nano for two days and the click wheel froze randomly when I put a song on pause....I reset it a billion times and nothing happened so I am now restoring it but it is taking forever how long is it supposed to take?
Is there anything else I could do?

When I restored my iPod it literally took like 15 seconds. But I think it should take a lot longer.
If you are restoring your iPod it should fix it. If it doesn't then you should take it into apple.

  • Click wheel is frozen and resetting doesn't help.

The click wheel on my wife's ipod nano is not working. I've reset the iPod several times but the wheel doesn't respond at all. Any ideas? Thanks!

also i think i may have been half way through installing a updated firmware when my PC crashed. I had to resttart and i think its happened ever since then.

  • Ipod Mini Frozen...Click wheel inoperable.

I've taken on the task of getting my Niece's Ipod back into working condition. I've tried everything as suggested, still not working. I started by changing the battery myself, easy enough. Then fully charges unit. I then attempted resets as suggested. I then reset to original defaults. I'm able to connect through itunes and download ect... . I do not think the "wheel is working. I haven't located any problems such as this anywhere. Is there anybody who can help me??

I quick note. The above problem was that because I did not make sure the click wheel plug wasn't in the proper position to accept the "guts", with the new battery, I damaged the plug on the main board. Having found out that APPLE would indeed repair this for 185usd I attempted this repair as well. I was able to resolder this plug to the main board. After reassembly Ipod back in working order. It was fun to do. Thanks to all on this board to posting their own experiences for my review. I will now attempt other repairs.

  • Click wheel ipod and vista question

Hello, I have a 4G click wheel 40 gig ipod (updater version 3.1.1) and I have been using my mothers computer which has windows xp and i haven't upgraded itunes to the version 8. I was given a new computer (32 bit) which is running windows vista basic. My question is am I going to have problems with using vista basic and my older ipod? I have heard that it was turning older ipods into bricks and have been scared to transfer everything over to the new computer.
Also, I am using it with an Alpine KCA-420i (got it the same time as the ipod) in the truck, and it worked great for a while and for the past two years it freezes up, skips songs or just won't work and was wandering if it was due to upgrading itunes? The last time the ipod was updated was for the version it is running now.
I am trying to be careful with my ipod since it got frozen during an ice storm (no electricity for nine days) and left in the truck in bellow freezing temps for a couple of hours. The hard drive didn't appreciate it and is now not really working all that great. clicking, whirling ,grinding noises ya give it a couple good whacks on the back or sides it starts to work again. I read some post on reformatting the disk, last time i tried it the ipod froze but now i am going to try again. I did the diagnostic mode solution and it keeps getting frozen in the HDD scan.
Sorry this is long, but if anybody has any suggestions or answers that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Cinamon

I don't have a guide or anything, but it is almost as easy as replacing it with another hard drive, and there are online guides for doing that, for example
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/iPod4th_Generation_orPhoto
Be sure to use those plastic tools. If you use metal ones, you will damage the iPod's case.
And it's a Compact Flash card that I used, not an SD card (which is smaller). Compact Flash cards 16GB and below are getting affordable (if you shop around online), although 32GB and higher ones are still expensive. 4GB cards are very cheap, so you may want to try it with one of those, to confirm it works, since it is always possible there are other problems with your iPod.
    1. Get one of these adapters, or equivalent. It's $5 with shipping included.
    [CF Compact-Flash SSD To Toshiba IPod 1.8 inch Adapter|http://cgi.ebay.com/CF-Compact-Flash-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapt erW0QQitemZ180303249125QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Cables_Adapters?hash=item29fae93ee5& _trksid=p3911.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1240%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A2% 7C294%3A50]
The listing above on eBay is the same item from the same seller as the one I bought.
    2. It fits in the iPod case with only one minor mod. There is a pair of jumper pins, used for the master/slave setting; you can see it on the image in the listing (on the left side). You want it with the jumper ON, for the master setting. It sticks out too much, so I just bent the pins 90 degrees with needle nose pliers, and the jumper still fits. If your 4G iPod is the 40GB model, it has the thicker drive and case, so it may fit fine without bending it over.
    3. Connect the Compact Flash card to the adapter and connect the adapter where the 1.8-inch hard drive was connected. You need to put something non-conducting between the logic board and the adapter/CF card. A stiff piece of paper (like a business card) would work; I cut a piece of clear plastic from the +impossible to open without hurting yourself+ packaging material that most tech products come packed in these days. Cut it to the right rectangle shape to fit between the logic board and adapter/CF card without sliding around.
    4. The adapter plus CF Card is much smaller than the hard drive, so you need to fill that space to avoid it rattling around. Cardboard pieces would work, but if you want to take advantage of the lighter weight, get something light. I used some of that flexible foamy packing sheets that are used to wrap around delicate items for shipping. I cut appropriate size pieces to take up the extra space. I put one layer between the adapter/CF card and the logic board and the rest between the adapter/CF card and the metal half of the case.
Then, you just connect the iPod and run a Restore, as if it was a regular 4G iPod. The three key advantages are better shock resistance, lighter weight, and no drive spin-up delay. The only real disadvantage is lower capacity, unless you get a more expensive CF card with higher capacity.
Note to other readers: I also tried this retrofit with an older 3rd gen iPod. It did not work for me and the parts I used; I could not get the iPod to format or restore with the Compact Flash card inside.

  • Ipod 20gb click wheel Cannot reformat

I bought a used ipod 20 gb click wheel and I have only been able to get it to work by letting the battery run down and recharging through the outlet . Then it works just fine. If I hook it up to the computer not only does the computer not reconize it, but the ipod freezes, shows the file, or does other unhappy things. Right now it is frozen in 5in 1 . (It passed everything I think). I want to reformat but if Ican't get the computer to reconize it how can I do that. Itunes doesn't show it, ipod updater doesn't show it. I don't have the disc.Going crazy!!!Any info needs to be detailed- I saw one that talked about reformatiing with the disc from my computer refomatting discs- but how do I do that if my computer is not showing this thing! HELP AND THANKS

The folder with an exclamation point is often a software issue on the iPod. The best troubleshooting step for this error is to restore the iPod.

If it still is not working after the restore, you'll probably need to set up a dispatch at the following website.

IPOD model A1059 appears frozen and is unresponsive to all click wheel entries. Reset does not work.  Does not show up in ITunes or in Windows Explorer.  What is the problem and is there a fix?

If you are unable to reset the iPod (assuming the hold switch is not in the On position either), then you'll have to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then connect it to a charger and leave it to charge for a couple of hours.

  • Ipod 1st generation click wheel not responding - won't reset - apple icon

My ipod won't reset or show up in itunes when connected.  Apple icon seems to be frozen on screen.  How can I reset it?  Help!

This is really the 1st gen iPod from 2001, with a non-touch non-click wheel that physically turns, and connects with a FireWire cable?
Make sure the Hold switch is not in the ON position?
The older iPods did a reset differently from more recent iPod that have a click wheel.  Be sure you are following the appropriate reset steps in this document, based on the actual iPod model.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If it's a 1st gen iPod, it would be How to reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector).  The buttons to press and hold are different from later iPods.

  • Click wheel no longer works

    Hey guys,
The other day, my click wheel just completely stopped working. I got it for Christmas '04 (Suffice to say, I'm disappointed that it hasn't even lasted two years yet). It is a 4th-gen 40GB black/white display. Prior to it completely not working, only the bottom right "quarter" of the click wheel would not work (play/pause and ff worked, sliding my thumb around did not move the cursor). However, now I cannot scroll around at all. It appears to work somewhat, as when I move it sometimes, the volume on a song will go up, though at a rate that would probably get to full in 50-60 years.
I know for a fact it is not frozen (or on hold ;p) because it will turn off and on. Furthermore, anything that requires a press works.
I've tried everything except for restore it, and if that's all I can do aside from send it into Apple, I may end up doing that, since it's useless to me if I can only play track 1 of 6500. ;p
Any ideas? Is this something apple can fix/replace?
Thanks so much for any help,
    Ted
