Click wheel ipod freezes up windows explorer/delayed write error

Sorry for the length of this, but I have been dealing with this for a while.
I have two 5G 20GB iPod's that I can't sync to either of my computers.
I usually sync it on my desktop, which is a P4 2.4Ghz, 512MB, XP PRO, MoBo is Asus P4C800, I would connect them with the firewire connection directly from the back of the motherboard.
My iPod's Hard Drive failed. So I replaced it with another Toshiba Drive (MKGAL2006). It didn't have the apple logo on it, but I read that it really didn't matter. When I plugged it in, it immediately detected at first, but when it was auto-updating music, it would get to about 2/3rds of my music library (13 G's) and then I would get an unknown error -124 from iTunes. I would then eject the ipod from itunes, and eject it from the windows menu. When I would check to see what music made it onto my ipod, none would be listed. When I reconnected it, it showed in itunes that I had 9 Gigs of "Other" data on it, but none of it was music. I would then set the ipod to manual update. This locked up the computer, and wouldn't unlock until I unplugged the ipod from the firewire cable. The ipod would then lock up the computer the second I plugged it in, so I put it in disk mode. I would then need to restore my ipod when I plugged it back in. I was then able to upload music to it, however, I couldn't transfer more than 25 songs at a time without getting a "Unknown error -124" from itunes or "Delayed write failure" from windows. I was getting pretty far along with this system, until I finally got a BSOD, with a memory failure error, and memory dump. But there was no program specified. Now, when I plug it in, it shows as removable drive (E:), autoplay will run for 10 minutes, and itunes becomes unresponsive, as will my computer. When I right click on the ipod in my computer, it says the drive cannot be accessed or is unresponsive.
I tried my girlfriends ipod after this on her profile in windows. It followed the same process, during auto sync it would get to a 2 GB's of data, and then get error -124 in itunes. It was showing up as the name of her ipod, however in my computer. When I ejected, switched to manual, then reconnected, it now shows as removable disk in My computer.
I then tried it on my TOSHIBA laptop (1.5 Ghz Celeron, xp home, 504 MB memory,) through the USB cable and fresh install of itunes (7.41).
Mine made a connection, I had to restore it, and it began to sync up music, it got to 2.5 Gigs, and then I got a windows explorer message saying there is no disc in the drive, please insert one. I was able to eject the IPOD (as it was listed in itunes, but I named it something else when I restored it)from itunes, but ejecting it from windows froze up the system tray, and after waiting 15 minutes, I eventually just unplugged it.
I tried my girlfriends ipod, and it was able to install in windows, but won't get listed in itunes, but itunes is responsive.
I am very frustrated with this. Please let me know if there is any vital information with this that I am missing
Thanks in advance.

Allright,
So I tried sticking my girlfriends ipod back into the laptop through USB for a couple hours. iTunes locked up, and the iPod got hot. So I disconnected it manually, and I got a unhappy face, that wouldn't reset no matter what. In frustration, I just left everything alone for a couple days.
I found out online that people were having success with these unhappy ipod faces by slapping the back of the case after they hard reset the ipod (press menu and select). So I did just that. And it worked. The ipod was back up and running. I plugged it into the laptop, and it updated itself. iTunes warned me that it was preselected for another library, so to add any music, it would go into another playlist as a secondary library. However, it only added music that wasn't on there before. So Boom, I got one iPod working.
The one I had, whose HDD I replaced, wasn't so lucky. I was still getting stuck restoring it, then hooking it up, and it updated several gigs of music (very slowly) and then would freeze up itunes, and I would have to disconnect. After having read on some forums (I highly recommend you read http://www.notpopular.com/blogs/josh/2005/12/24/replacing-the-hardrive-of-an-ipo d, the comments taught me a lot) that reconnecting the IDE cable on their hard drives got rid of the unhappy faces and folder icons. So I cracked open my ipod, and replaced the replacement hard drive with the original one from apple. SOB actually worked. I put the ipod back together, and hooked it into the USB. It updated about 3000 songs, and showed that sync was complete. I unhooked it, but found there was no music listed under songs. Weird. So I set it into disk mode (reset with menu and select, and at the apple logo hold play and select) and plugged back in, I ejected after 30 or so songs, and found that those 30 songs were listed. I know that disk mode works. So I hook it back in, and I am happy to say that my ipod is working with the original hard drive. I didn't even have to pay the $54 bucks it cost for another drive. I also learned about diagnostic mode ,that isn't written about in the official boards (http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml)
I can check my hard drive, and memory, all sort of groovy tests on there.
And at this point, I am checking out my 3rd generation ipod that I long ago gave up as a hard drive problem. I reseated the hard drive connection and put it into diagnostic mode, which verified my hard drive was fine. So we'll see how that goes.

  • IPod click wheel not recognised in Windows/iTunes and glitchy

I appear to have an iPod software related problem - no problems connecting my partner's iPod and iTunes is working fine with that one, I have reinstalled iTunes anyway just in case. The problem iPod is not showing any error symbols and I can get it into disk mode but the hard drive is constantly rebooting and playback is glitchy (sticks and skips tracks). I can't see this iPod in iTunes, it is showing in Windows Explorer but freezes the computer if you click on it. Is there any other way I can restore the iPod?

The most common failure on iPods with hard drives is the hard drive. It is quite possible that your iPod has a faulty hard drive. If so, there is no way to Restore it, because there is a physical problem with the hard drive.
If you have connected another iPod to YOUR computer using YOUR docking cable, you have eliminated three other possibilities (a bad cable, a bad USB port, and software-related issues).
The problem may not be the hard drive; it may be a faulty logic board, or the internal connection between the logic board and hard drive. But if you cannot use iTunes to Restore the iPod, and you cannot click on the iPod in a Windows Explorer window to manually reformat it, there not much more you can do, other than opening it up to see if there is something obviously wrong inside.

  • Click Wheel iPod not recognized by Vista Retail

I have a 20gb click wheel ipod that Vista v6.0 does not recognize in device manager. iTunes does not recognize the unit either.
I'm surprised that Apple has not addressed the problem comprehesively but rather suggests generic fixes for all their products such as the 5r's. Particularly given the number of customers with the same issue. Hope was dashed with the promise of a fix in the latest version of iTunes. End user fixes are innovative but I had hope that Apple would use its resources to address the issue with a retooled and workable driver (presuming this is where the issue is).
After searching the forums and trying every conceivable fix from formatting, usb ports, older versions of iTunes and Windows drivers, I'm in need of a fresh perspective.
The most noteworthy link to an article from end users I've attempted which unfortunately did not resolved the problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2001067#2001067 (Thanks to Buegie for the comprehensive approach).
Is anyone aware of ongoing efforts from Apple to address the issue with a software fix or have they abandoned support of older models?

    Ken,
UAC was disabled on the machine from the first day Vista was installed and long before any other software was installed. I suspect that it would have been disabled in safe mode regardless although I've never tested that theory.
I was surprised to read that Adobe would not install for you unless UAC was on. I installed Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 yesterday without UAC on and without incident.
Above you describe you are trying to resolve problems similar to my own. If your ipod was not recognized by Windows or iTunes, I encourage you to disconnect your cable from the pc, boot it in safe mode and then connect the cable. There are a number of different issues and fixes revolving around this issue but surely this would be one of the simple ones to try. I tried them all and I really mean all so I was nothing short of stunned to see this work. Good luck.

  • Click wheel iPods trigger error message

let me just start this off by saying I'm on my 2nd click wheel iPod right now. my first one, as well as it's replacement, kept triggering this error in iTunes whenever transferring songs to them.
my replacement one did this right out of the box, at least with my original I got a few months out of it before it started throwing errors at me and freezing my G5. just a few days ago, the replacement one totally restored itself. it kept skipping & freezing between tracks, so I did a "soft reset", turns out it was a reformat with a nice little error icon that told me to visit Apple's support site.
as a test, I plugged my sister's iPod nano in and dropped a bunch of music onto it, works perfectly. I also have not had any issues with my Shuffle. I recently asked my friend who has a PowerBook and a 5th gen iPod and he's never had any problems. is it just me, or does anyone else have a click wheel iPod that doesn't play well with a newer system?
I've done all that I think I possibly can without actually taking the thing apart. I have all the latest software, updaters, etc. I've restored with DU, so what's the deal Apple? why is the death toll on these click wheel units so high? what causes them to completely lock up your dual-core dream machines?
anyone who's experienced anything similar, or would just like to vent, please feel free.

yes I have, and thank you for the suggestion. I have all the latest software on both...the iPod itself has been restored, and my machine has been updated via SU. I can't think of any program on my machine that would interfere with iTunes. I do not run any antivirus or spyware programs. I also repair disk permissions regularly on my machine, especially after any software update.
what leads me to believe that the replacement iPod is bad is that my iPod Shuffle and sister's iPod Nano both worked flawlessly when I tested them. my original iPod that I sent back never acted up, I was able to add 3000 songs to it without any freezing or errors of any kind. it was about a year into having it that I started experiencing problems with it freezing my machine and spewing error messages. then the dreaded "grinding" noise that you never want to hear come from any drive began to become an everyday occurrence. this replacement iPod isn't even 6 months old, which leads me to believe that Apple slapped me with a refurb. if that's the case I am very disappointed.

  • Click Wheel iPod appears in Finder; not iTunes.

I've had my click wheel iPod for more than 2 years now, and with the exception of all out dying on me about a year ago (the problem has been resolved), it has worked fine.
However now, all of a sudden after updating to iTunes 6.0.4, my iPod is not being mounted in the iTunes Source list. It appears in the Finder fine.
I have tried all USB ports, all Firewire ports, the 5Rs, running an older version of iTunes (6.0.2) and have tried the multiple tutorials located on the support page. NOTHING.
Does anyone have any ideas? Or will I have to bite the bullet and wait for Apple to get their act back together, and release a working 6.0.5 in the near (hopefully) future?

    Hi Ryan,

You may want to first try "The Five Rs".

  • How do i get the music from my click wheel ipod into my itunes

How do i get the music from my click wheel ipod into my itunes library.

You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store. However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, you can add them to your iTunes library.

  • Strange display when charging Gen. 4 Click-wheel iPod

This just began to happen. I'm original owner of my gen. 4 click-wheel iPod.
When I connect my iPod to my iMac to charge battery and update songs all works as usual until it is connected for an hour or so. They the display on the iPod shows a battery icon that looks as if it is 1/3 charged and a ! . What does the battery symbol and ! mean?
When I plug the ipod into a wall socket (Using the Apple connector and AC adapter that came with the ipod) it seems to charge just fine.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

I just had a power supply go dead on my iMac G5. See the thread here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1360445&tstart=0
I did also replace the internal back up battery inside myself. But once the Apple tech replaced the internal power supply (see above link) now my iPod charges just like new.

  • 4th gen click-wheel iPod not syncing

I have a 40GB 4th Gen click-wheel iPod that although works fine will not sync with my iTunes. I have done all normal troubleshooting items (5R's, restored factory settings, etc.). I am running it on an HP computer and have all software versions up-to-date. Specifically when I place the iPod into the docking station the connection begins, but then a loud whirring occurs and then the "Do Not Connect" message does not go away and I can't eject it. I have no warranty on the unit anymore and need to know if there is a fix or should I just take it to Apple store for troubleshooting.

Its a problem with iTunes 7. Many people are experiencing the same problems.

  • New iTunes syncing with older click wheel iPod

I have an older 20 GB 1st gen. click wheel iPod. I'm wondering if I will have syncing problems upgrading to iTunes 10.2.2. Has anyone done this without problem? Please let me know.

Can I use the new versions of iTunes on an old iPod
Yes. I have iTunes 9.0.x working just fine with an iPod that's a generation older than yours.

  • ITunes Match and Click-wheel iPod.

I want to activate iTunes match. However I have a click-wheel ipod and I want to make sure I can still update it through iTunes. I had read somewhere that you can no longer set up playlists in iTunes match. I still need to be able to update my 80gb iPod. Anyone know?

  • My Mac crashes when I connect my click-wheel iPod

I have a click-wheel iPod connected to my Mac (see my hardware and software in my details below).
It has worked faithfully since I bought it new. Over the past weekend however a problem has developed. When I connect it to my Mac using the same cable and dock, after a few minutes the Mac just shuts down. Completely. I have to disconnect the iPod and then turn my Mac on again.
I've tried doing a restore on the iPod but it does not seem to 'restore'.
Any thoughts on what might be the problem and if it is fixable?
For the record, I also have an iPod Touch and when I connect it there is no problem.
I am running iTunes 8 and have had no issues with it.
    Thank you.

iMac had a bad power supply. All is fixed now.

  • I have a click wheel iPod from 2006 and want a new armband for it.  Where can I order one that I can be certain is the correct size? OR, how can I tell if the ones I see online will fit this older model?

I have a click wheel iPod from '06 and want a new armband for it.  Where can I order one that I can be certain will fit this very outdated model??

I lost equipment due to lightening strike several years ago, which also had old equipment and was not available. I gave insurance images and provided original receipts (my purchases were made on Apple.com), and Apple provided electronic copies of the receipts. You may want to contact Apple and check, if they can provide a copy. Insurance may depreciate the original value. I was offered residual value which i used to buy newer replacements, and provided the receipts for replacements back to insurance.
