Click wheel stuck

My iPod nano 5th gen click wheel doesn't work. I think I spilled a small amount of something sticky (like coke) and it got through the crack and beneath the wheel. I can scroll by circling my finger but the iPod doesn't respond when i press the buttons (click wheel). I can still use the iPod by tilting it horizontally and using album scroll, but the inability to use the click wheel and access the main menu is very annoying. Is there a way to safely remove the wheel and clean it out? Anyone else have this problem and know of a solution that doesn't involve buying a new device or paying apple $80 for a phone call? Ay help is much appreciated!

Thanks, Chris. I can't even get the iPod to reset, as the menu button no longer functions, nor does the select button. The only ones that work are previous, next and play/pause. I have no scrolling ability. I had problems with this before but had always been able to at least reset it, but no longer. I am still under warranty and so I am going to see if they can fix it. It's very annoying! I haven't done anything with the iPod outside of listening to it in the house, I've kept up to date with all the updates for the thing and for iTunes. Given how many people are having the same problem (and oddly enough, at around the same time!), it looks like it's a fault with Apple. I hope they fix/replace it, although since it's an iPod mini, I am wondering what they will do now that it's discontinued! Very, very frustrating as I use it everyday.
Thanks for pointing me to the other thread though.

Mine does that too! It's so annoying and makes me want to break things. So far, the only quick fix that I've found it to keep it out of heat and cold. In the wintertime, I typically carry it in my pocket and that seems to work, but now in the summer I'm having more difficulty. Sometimes sticking it in front of the A/C seems to work, but that's only temporary. If anyone can find a better solution, I'd love to hear it.

  • IPod with click wheel stuck

I have a iPod with click wheel 30gb. The screen froze on the apple logo. I can reset it, and the screen would go blank for one second. Then, it'd go back to the frozen. HELP

UPDATE: It finally decided to start working again, but it's been rather wonky for quite some time now. I'm not at all happy, especially considering I can't afford a new one.

  • 5G click wheel MIDDLE BUTTON STUCK!!!

WOW. i mean i just got my new 60GB black video ipod from the store.
i played with it a bit after transfering all my data onto it.
then the middle button got stuck inside!
its surrounded by the click wheel, and its sunken in.
i have tried to push it back up anyway i could find, but using needles is hard. and it's screwing my brand new ipod, which looks bad right now.
i am too **** far to go back to the store now... [really far!]
never heard of this problem... any ideas ???

Actually you are not the first. The same thing happened to my 4th generation 20gig. About 7 months after I got it. The middle button still worked but was stuck down. It caused some stange behaviors when I would navigate the iPod and when I finally got tired of dealing with it I took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it on the spot. As long as it's still covered don't mess with it, just bring it back.

  • Click Wheel button stuck

I have a problem keeping my iPod charged. When I looked at the click wheel, it appears to be stuck with the reverse & pause/play buttons recessed. When I attempt to click on the Menu button, it responds as if I clicked on the scroll button. I'm in a quandry as to what I can do to fix it. The warranty has expired and I'm not willing to pay Apple to fix it when I can replace it for less. I would like to fix it myself if possible in lieu of replacing it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

If you have not Restored it in iTunes, try it, but that is a long shot.
It probably needs service, if you are in warranty send it to Apple or take it to an Apple Store and make a Genius bar appointment. If not, you might try a 3rd party repair site, such as http://www.iresq.com or Google for more.

  • When I click on "App Store", the loader gets stuck on "Contacting iTunes Store..." I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else.

I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else. Any suggestions?

I was having this problem. The settings on my wireless router was set to hide my IP address so it wouldn't connect. When I changed that, I connected no problem. While this is annoying since I don't want my IP address to be out there, I just switch my router when I need to connect to the App/iTunes Store. Hope this helps. It worked for me.

  • Click Wheel iPod Stuck At Frowny iPod

My friend has a very old iPod, one of the first click-wheels. The iPod never makes it past the frowny iPod and error with the link to apple.com/support/ipod. When i try to set it into disk mode, the error still occurs. does anyone know how to fix this?

I don't think it will do any harm, but I don't think it will help in this case. The 4th gen iPod existed before Intel Macs existed, so +Apple Partition Map+ was the only choice when they were new (unless they were formatted for Windows). So I think +Apple Partition Map+ is the better choice. Intel Macs can use either +Apple Partition Map+ or +GUID Partition Table+ equally well. I have a 3G iPod and a 4G iPod, and they use +Apple Partition Map+, and they work just fine with my Intel Mac.

  • The infamous problem of the Click Wheel getting frozen

Since I've read a lot of stuff on the internet about this very common problem, and that nobody has found a solution, I wanted to start this topic in order to solve it through different experiences in the community.
I live in Spain, but bought my iPod nano in Canada last October, and I noticed the click wheel problem since the very beginning. Sometimes it got frozen, so I used the Hold Button to “reset” it and it worked again, but I have to say that it was very annoying to get this stuff stucked from time to time.
But in December, it started to get frozen more frequently, and now it happens every time I turn the iPod on. It responds to shaking, so I shake it and start listening to it in random play, and after some minutes (may be an hour, or may be never), and after many “Hold Switch slides”, I get it back working properly again. It normally keeps working fine for a while, but suddenly it can get frozen again.
Here is a list of observations I’ve made, despite the problem seems to be very randomly (sometimes it fixes 2 min before turning on, sometimes it gets an hour, sometimes it never unfreeze):
-Some people have said that it’s a moisture problem. Well, it is happening here, where humidity is high, but I was in a very dry place for Xmas and it happened the same way. But the fact that it works when it is hot rather than when it is cold is in support of this hypothesis.
-Some people say it’s some dirt between the wheel and the contacts. I tried cleaning the borders of the wheel and it didn’t worked.
-If I charge it full, it works immediately, but for a while
-Sometimes I turn it on and immediately touch the wheel and it works, but 1 sec latter it isn’t working again. Sometimes I turn it on and it doesn´t work at all.
-Of course I tried the “5 R’s” and a full restore. Reinstallation and updates of iPod software doesn’t work either.
    SO:
    1- Any suggestions?
2- Is Apple going to do something with this? (the problem is here since iPod Nano 2G). I’ve read somewhere that their policy is to tell you that the iPod is so cheap that you can buy another one (but it seems that is a serial problem so that irrational answers will not work)

    Some points to ponder:
It is very difficult to determine from Internet reports how common a problem really is for any product with a very high sales volume. If millions are sold, hundreds of reports still just represent a tiny fraction of them. Generally, if a problem really is inherent in its design or manufacture, a very high return rate follows & the maker is forced to correct it to stay in business.
Internet reports also suffer from the problem of not always providing enough info to determine if the issue is exactly the same in each report, or if it has the same cause. Quite often there are a number of "me too" reports that list no details or are too vague to determine much. Sometimes a follow up reveals that user error, abuse, or post-manufacturing damage is involved in some of the reports.
This is not meant to imply that real problems in design or manufacture don't exist, only that it isn't a good idea to make overly broad assumptions about commonality without sufficient information.
You have provided a lot of useful info about your own experience, enough to rule out some of the theories & to make others seem much less likely. But it is still important to consider that those theories may explain some of the reports & that the same symptom does not mean the same cause must always be involved.
With that out of the way, here is what I see as a synopsis of the symptoms you observe:
    • The frozen scroll wheel problem was intermittent but occurred from day one of ownership
    • It got worse over time & now occurs every time the iPod (Nano?) is powered up
    • Toggling the Hold switch repeatedly seems to temporarily cure the problem
    • Performing the 5 R's has no effect
    • Cleaning the borders of the wheel has no effect (details?)
    • The problem doesn't occur if the iPod is fully charged (details?)
    • Weather effects may be involved somehow but not in an obvious way
If this is accurate, it would be useful to know how many other users see any of the same things, or if they see something substantially different.
Also, note that the participants in this forum are just users & cannot know what if anything Apple will do about this issue. The terms of use prohibit our discussing Apple policy so all we can do here is try to uncover as many facts as we can about when the symptoms occur & what does & doesn't work to resolve them.

  • My 4th gen nano has locked up and the click wheel doesn't function, is it dead?

Hi my 4th gen nano stopped working, the screens ok with no error messages but the click wheel no longer functions other than reseting. I've set it back to default ok but still no good as it's stuck on the language page. Is it dead??

  • Click wheel frozen while docked

All of a sudden, after 7 mos of no problems, my 3rd gen nano click wheel will no longer work while docked to my dock at home or in the car. I have been using it with both for at least 4 months and have never had this problem. I have tried both types of resets, have downloaded the most recent software, have made sure the lock switch is not engaged, and its still having the problem. After resetting it, the click wheel works fine with the earbuds (always has), but as soon as I plug it into either dock, no longer. It will still play, but can't use the click wheel. Anyone have this problem? Any solutions?? Please help!!

The screen freezes on whatever is playing (a podcast, song, etc..). It freezes at the point the song or podcast is at when I put it in the dock. Even if the podcast or song finishes, the screen is still completetly stuck at the point it was when I put the ipod in the dock.

  • Click wheel doesnot work...

So basically I took apart my ipod video 30 gig(no warranty left on it anyways) because the centre button on the click wheel was stuck. I followed all precautions and put it back together properly. Next thing I know I turn on the iPod by clicking on the centre button, it powers up fine and goes to the list of options i.e."music, videos, settings, etc. But when I go to scroll or click on the center button again none of these work, the iPod doesn't respond, and after 15 seconds the backlight fades as usual. The only way I can get the backlight back on is to flick the hold switch on and off. When the iPod goes to sleep I can wake it with the center button, but that is the only time the center button works.
I took apart my iPod to recheck everything. Everything is where it should be. I used a anti-static wristband.
I don't understand. someone have the same problem?

If it scrolls, but not clicks, then you have damaged the buttons on the motherboard. The iPod's buttons are on there, so to fix you'd need to totally replace it. The click-wheel works on a separate circuit to the buttons, so would remain unaffected.
    Thanks

I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!

You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

  • Click wheel won't work and battery discharges

My iPod is about two years old, so way past the warranty. Neither the click wheel nor the button will respond anymore.
It does still respond to the hold switch, as toggling it will cause the icon on the display to change and turn on the backlighting. I can also connect it to my computer, charge it, and sync it. I've tried all the suggestions the manual, support, and various web searches have suggested.
I can't actually reset it because that requires use of the menu and center buttons, which are nonresponsive, like the other buttons and click wheel.
I have restored it but it is stuck now on the language selection screen which requires use of the buttons to proceed.
Another issue that I have had recently and doesn't seem related, but perhaps it is, is that the battery will discharge when not used in a day or two from a full charge. The battery life when playing is still normal around 13-14 hours, which suggest the battery is still good.
Has anyone else had this or these problems and had a resolution or have a suggestion? I fear my iPod may be no more for this world. If this is so, its replacement won't be another iPod.

Since you have posted in the Classic forum, you are unlikely to find anyone else with the same problem.
First, identify the actual model that you have, here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 and then start a new thread in that appropriate forum.

  • Oh, my click wheel does not click anymore.

    Hi.
It appears the click wheel is stuck. I know the 5 R's, but is restoring the iPod going to unlock the locked click wheel?
    Suggestions?

Okay, I'm still confused. Click-wheels are not supposed to rotate. They only sense your finger's rotation. Are you saying the wheel is not responding to your finger movements?
If so, I would try basic things like rebooting and switching Hold on and then off. You could also try restoring if that doesn't work, but honestly this is starting to sound like a hardware issue.
