Click Wheel Unresponsive and Center Button Problem

Hey all,
I have 2 issues with my ipod nano 8GB (4th gen) that I'm thinking might be hardware, but I would like to ascertain if there's any quick/easy fixes possible.
1. Sometimes I notice that half of my click wheel is unresponsive. I would be adjusting the volume and all of a sudden the volume would pause and then jump (since whatever software is controlling the clickwheel thinks I rapidly scrolled through that unresponsive portion). Note that this unresponsiveness occurs for any scrolling action (the volume is just an example).
2. Recently, I noticed that if I hit the center button to play a song, it would sometimes immediately cycle to the next song or go back to the album if there was only one song.
I'd like to avoid sending the ipod in for repairs, so any help would be appreciated!

I have the same problem, only it's just my menu button.
It was on-and-off working for a while, but it just stopped all-together today.
No water damage, or serious drops, but I use it every day, and that might have possibly contributed to the issue.. Though you'd think they were built for frequent usage!
I'm just going to call in to apple, there isn't much online about how to help.. and you need the menu button to reset it, so that won't work to even bring me back to the original menu screen.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Non-functioning wheel and center button

i'm stuck on the main screen, but it seems to work fine since it displays the cover albums normally
    i've tried the following:
    [ ] restored
[ ] updated to current iTunes
    [ ] fully charged
[ ] toggled btwn lock/unlock then held down the menu and center button
[ ] plugged into other usb
is this problem because while i use a mac at home to restore/add songs/etc, i charge it at work on a pc?

i would love to know how to fix this as well. its happened twice to mine now, and i fixed it the first time by resetting the iPod, but it isn't working this time

  • My classic is stuck on a blank screen and it won't connect to any device or reset when I hold the menu and center buttons. Any ideas what's up and how to fix it?

I know click hold on and off then hold the menu and center button until the apple logo appears. I have tried this so many times and my iPod Classic is still unresponsive! I've tried plugging my iPod into my Mac, my wall charger, my ihome, everything, but nothing works. It won't connect to iTunes to restore or anything. I've tried leaving it unplugged long enough to let the battery die and then tried plugging it in, a method I've utilized successfully with other iPods but that didn't work either. I really just starting to lose faith in the quality of this product. The first classic I bought didn't work at all and I had to exchange it. This one I bought to replace my 5 year old nano and it hasn't even lasted 7 months! Somebody please offer me a solution and assure me that I didn't waste $250 on a crap piece of technology. I'm desperate!

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.
Let us know how you get on.

  • When I click on "App Store", the loader gets stuck on "Contacting iTunes Store..." I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else.

I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else. Any suggestions?

I was having this problem. The settings on my wireless router was set to hide my IP address so it wouldn't connect. When I changed that, I connected no problem. While this is annoying since I don't want my IP address to be out there, I just switch my router when I need to connect to the App/iTunes Store. Hope this helps. It worked for me.

  • Classic: will not recharge; apple logo flashes every few seconds then fades away; have tried the 'reboot' advice i.e. move hold switch on and off, hold menu and center button, no success.  have tried this many times and kept connected for several hours.

I have a classic, several years old.
It will not recharge; the Apple logo flashes every few seconds then disappears.
I have tried the 'reboot' advice i.e. move the Hold switch on and off, hold the Menu and Center buttons, no success.
I have tried this many times and kept the ipod connected for several hours.  And I have tried two different cords, one connected to the desktop computer, one connected to electrical outlet.

  • Actions menu wheel image and Go button image

    Hello ,
In APEX 4 Interactive Reports, the actions menu wheel image and the go button are coming as html buttons instead of the wheel image and go button image.
Is there a way I can rever to the old wheel img and go button .
    Thanks,
    Dippy

Within the IR, under Search Bar, you can set Actions Menu Image to '/i/ws/action_32x24.gif' - this is the green wheel but does not have little arrow. I will contact our image guru and see if the old one is sitting somewhere. As for 'Go', this does not support an image but you can change the word if you need to (using Search Button Label) and set a button template to match your application.

Why my iphone 5 still cannot install this update? I've clicked the download and install button but it do nothing, im using wifi and the baterry is 100% but still, it do nothing when i've clicked! Help!

Reset the phone (no data loss): Press both the home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.  After the phone restarts, try updating again.

  • Click wheel and center button

for the last few weeks my click wheel will periodically not respond. sometimes it works, and sometimes it wont work. the centerbutton is the same way. the lower portion of the click wheel is slightly indented, i thought initally that it was a heat problem. here in savannah GA it gets really hot and i thought that it wouldnt recognize the heat difference or something. i am really hoping someone helps me out.

Well I have THREE 1st gen iPod nanos that ignore the click wheel. I am beginning to speculate that there is a quality issue with these because when I gently flex the PCB near the click wheel connector then the click wheel will function. I am wondering if anyone successfully fixed this. You need a TINY soldering iron and a microscope to see the tiny components. I conjecture that there is a lousy solder joint on one of the tiny components causing an intermittent connection. If I get super lucky, I will then post my results!!!!

  • Still having click wheel and center button difficulties...

    My first topic-http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2115001&tstart=0
So now, basically I can use the center button to turn the iPod on, and that's it. After that, nothing works.
HOWEVER!, when I have my iPod docked in my speaker, everything works fine. Then I thought, oh, well it would probably work if it was plugged into the computer, right? Wrong. It only works right now when i have it in my speaker. So, I'm thoroughly confused ?_?
    Thanks

Try to restore it using iTunes.

  • Lower click wheel unresponsive, reqind button is touch sensitive

I recently bought a 16GB nano from a guy i found on a local classified ad. I thought everything was good, until i started listening to music, and i could only use the upper side of the click wheel to turn up the volume, the lower side is unresponsive. also, when i was trying to turn up the volume, moving by the rewind button would restart the song... its like the rewind button is touch sensitive. the ipod is in warranty, so is it possible for me to go to the apple store and replace it?

    wow, someone help?

  • Refurbished 4th gen. frozen and click wheel unresponsive.

    Hey all,
So I just got a "new" refurbished 4th Gen. ipod. (only one day!!)
My delima seems to be that it is frozen on the main menu.
I tried to do the unfrozen bit, and it has worked temporarily. However, I am unable to sroll through the click wheel to select songs.
Then, when I connect it to my AC power supply. It remains frozen and on top of that-- the screen turns dark black, so I can't seem to see what is going.
*The night before, I had it on ihome- to listen to on stereo speakers and this charges it it as well. Could it be related to this somehow?
It won't read on the computer either....
I really don't wanna do a restore, because I am away at college and my brother loaded the songs up for me, so I won't have a way to upload until I return home.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks.

    To clarify my issue.
It seems as though, my ipod only works when plugged into a power source.
After unplugging it-- even though with full power it will freeze and not play songs.
Any clue on what's going on?

  • Click wheel unresponsive. what do i do?? Got wet

I was in parking lot when it was raining, ipod nano was in hoodie pocket and fell out into puddle, didnt get very wett since it was in rubber case, after i dropped it, it worked fine , but next day when i turned it on the click wheel was unresponsive and couldnt scroll at all through music, although i can restart it, butt doesnt work i dont know what to do :'( also i did restore origional settings, im thinking i should jsut leave it alone for few days butt not sure.

hi there and welcome to Apple Discussions!
what you need to do is submerge the iPod in a bowl of uncooked rice. this gets rid of the moisture left in the iPod after it got wet.
that should clear up the problem.

  • Ipod Nano's Click Wheel Unresponsive.

After charging my Nano, I unplugged it and the click-wheel was not working. None of the buttons work either (including the center one). I tried to reset it, the center and menu buttons worked for this. After the reset, the wheel stopped working again.
    Any ideas?

Is the Hold button on or off?
Since resetting was a temporary fix, go to the Apple store. The staff there will let you know if you need a replacement or not as the iPod Nano is still under warranty.
