Click wheel unresponsive? Help :(

Hi, my name is Allie, i'm from Texas and just bought my iPod Nano (4gb) around Christmas.... it's been working fine up until yesterday when my Hold Switch quit working and my Click Wheel became inresponsive.... The ipod turns on when i reset it and plug it up to the computer (it will still update and everything) it's just not touch sensitive anymore.... I could possibly have gotten water damage to it but not much if any at all. Does anyone have any idea what happend or what I should do? *UPDATE- hold switch works, click wheel still inresponsive**.... any help would be greatly appreciated Thank you!

If you think you might have damaged your iPod with
water then that might be the reason why your click
wheel doesn't respond to your touch anymore.
Sending it back to Apple for repairs/replacement is
out of the question, warranty does not cover units
damaged by their owners.
You can try to restore it to factory settings using
iPod Updater.
is there an ecko?

  • Click Wheel Unresponsive and Center Button Problem

    Hey all,
I have 2 issues with my ipod nano 8GB (4th gen) that I'm thinking might be hardware, but I would like to ascertain if there's any quick/easy fixes possible.
    1. Sometimes I notice that half of my click wheel is unresponsive. I would be adjusting the volume and all of a sudden the volume would pause and then jump (since whatever software is controlling the clickwheel thinks I rapidly scrolled through that unresponsive portion). Note that this unresponsiveness occurs for any scrolling action (the volume is just an example).
    2. Recently, I noticed that if I hit the center button to play a song, it would sometimes immediately cycle to the next song or go back to the album if there was only one song.
I'd like to avoid sending the ipod in for repairs, so any help would be appreciated!

I have the same problem, only it's just my menu button.
It was on-and-off working for a while, but it just stopped all-together today.
No water damage, or serious drops, but I use it every day, and that might have possibly contributed to the issue.. Though you'd think they were built for frequent usage!
I'm just going to call in to apple, there isn't much online about how to help.. and you need the menu button to reset it, so that won't work to even bring me back to the original menu screen.

  • Lower click wheel unresponsive, reqind button is touch sensitive

I recently bought a 16GB nano from a guy i found on a local classified ad. I thought everything was good, until i started listening to music, and i could only use the upper side of the click wheel to turn up the volume, the lower side is unresponsive. also, when i was trying to turn up the volume, moving by the rewind button would restart the song... its like the rewind button is touch sensitive. the ipod is in warranty, so is it possible for me to go to the apple store and replace it?

    wow, someone help?

  • Click Wheel Unresponsive

I accidentally dropped my iPod Mini last week and now the click wheel is unresponsive. The screen will come on when you plug it in or move the hold switch, but nothing happens with the click wheel. I've tried to reset, but obviously this doesn't work because the click wheel is not working.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Try the Five R's.
If they do not work, then you will need to get your iPod serviced. However, Apple will not repair your iPod as you have voided the warranty.
You would have to have it repaired from a service like this...

  • Click wheel unresponsive. what do i do?? Got wet

I was in parking lot when it was raining, ipod nano was in hoodie pocket and fell out into puddle, didnt get very wett since it was in rubber case, after i dropped it, it worked fine , but next day when i turned it on the click wheel was unresponsive and couldnt scroll at all through music, although i can restart it, butt doesnt work i dont know what to do :'( also i did restore origional settings, im thinking i should jsut leave it alone for few days butt not sure.

hi there and welcome to Apple Discussions!
what you need to do is submerge the iPod in a bowl of uncooked rice. this gets rid of the moisture left in the iPod after it got wet.
that should clear up the problem.

  • Refurbished 4th gen. frozen and click wheel unresponsive.

    Hey all,
So I just got a "new" refurbished 4th Gen. ipod. (only one day!!)
My delima seems to be that it is frozen on the main menu.
I tried to do the unfrozen bit, and it has worked temporarily. However, I am unable to sroll through the click wheel to select songs.
Then, when I connect it to my AC power supply. It remains frozen and on top of that-- the screen turns dark black, so I can't seem to see what is going.
*The night before, I had it on ihome- to listen to on stereo speakers and this charges it it as well. Could it be related to this somehow?
It won't read on the computer either....
I really don't wanna do a restore, because I am away at college and my brother loaded the songs up for me, so I won't have a way to upload until I return home.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks.

    To clarify my issue.
It seems as though, my ipod only works when plugged into a power source.
After unplugging it-- even though with full power it will freeze and not play songs.
Any clue on what's going on?

  • I want a glass case with protection of click wheel -- plesae help? (80 gig)

I purchased the belkin case, which I LOVE, but it's made for the 60gig and it's a pain in the arse to take on and off. I also love it because it has a plastic covering that goes over the click wheel, making NO part of the ipod exposed. Is there a case like this made specifically for the 80 gig? Thank you!

    Check out eBay.
I just bought a Clear Plastic Case fo rmy 80GB iPod.
I paid.99cents for the Case & $7.00 S&H. It fits perfect and protects the entire iPod including the Click Wheel.
There are a lot of Cases on eBay so be sure to ask the seller if it will fit the 80GB.

  • Ipod Nano's Click Wheel Unresponsive.

After charging my Nano, I unplugged it and the click-wheel was not working. None of the buttons work either (including the center one). I tried to reset it, the center and menu buttons worked for this. After the reset, the wheel stopped working again.
    Any ideas?

Is the Hold button on or off?
Since resetting was a temporary fix, go to the Apple store. The staff there will let you know if you need a replacement or not as the iPod Nano is still under warranty.

  • Click-Wheel ipod help

I have an icon of an adapter to plug into a wall on my ipod, but i dont have any other power sources than my computer. My computer does not charge my ipod nor does it find my ipod when i plug it in anymore.
It's been doing that since my ipod has been "corrupted" and i that i've restored it. How can i recharge my ipod or at least have my computer locate it so i can re-add songs to it?

Plug the iPod into any of a 6-pin FireWire port on a computer, its power adaptor, or an AC adaptor to complete the restoration process; you may also be able to use this method to charge the iPod enough for the restoration to complete.

  • 160 GB Click Wheel Sensitivity

It seems like my new 160 GB Click wheel isn't as sensitive as my 80 GB was. Is anyone else having this problem? On my 80 GB I would barely touch it and it would scroll but on the 160 you have to keep your finger still for a couple seconds and then turn it and apply a little more pressure. Thanks for the help.

i am also having this same problem however with the 80gb ipod classic, i used to have an 80gb ipod video, i now have the 80gb classic and the click wheel hardly works compared to the old one, also it does not pick anything up throught ipod socks, unlike the video where it picked up every tiny movement, also when scrolling through menus it sometimes stops or never even starts. applying pressure to the click wheel does help but avoiding pressing the buttons while applying pressure is difficult and not pratical while on the move, the only advice i can give from experience is press on it harder and just hope that apple come through with the new firm ware sooner rather than later which will hopefully improve sensitivity. if anyone has any other solutions to get the click wheel working better than it is now i would be grateful. cheers.

  • Help!! Unresponsive Click Wheel!! nothing like i've ever seen...

Well, I recently got my iPod nano (2nd generation) back from my friend, who said "it wouldn't turn on anymore". I've restarted my iPod before, and i tried to when I got it, but it wouldn't turn on. So i waited about a week until he gave me my charger back. I connected it to my computer, and it had the Apple screen, and then started recharging. After a full charge, i disconnected it and tried listening to it, but the click wheel doesn't work!! I mean, i can roll the wheel around but when i try to click the center or even the sides it doesn't work!! Any ideas on what might be happening? Like I said, I can roll in the screen, like when you raise and lower the volume, but I cannot click. Oh, and I should mention that once in a while i get into my song's list, but without clicking any buttons. Then I press the "menu" button, and it works without fail. Help would be really appreciated!!

If you just got that nano under a year ago, say goodbye to your warranty before opening it up. You can also take it to an Apple Store to see if the Genius Bar can do something.

  • Unresponsive click wheel + Remote

    o have a 4g iPod that I bought almost a year ago.
Ok, I've noticed that many people have been having problems with their click wheels becoming unresponsive and having to reset their iPod, click the hold switch on and off. I've tried those things and SOMETIMES it works, but sometimes it doesn't.
So I was wondering...(if anybody has one) If I purchased one of the earphones with the remote would I still be able to raise and lower the volume even if the click wheel is being unresponsive to the touch of my finger? That's the only thing I get annoyed about when the click wheel becomes unresponsive, is not being able to raise or lower the volume when I need to.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Luis,
I've got the same problem you do. However I believe it's a bug in the software, since my backlight acts wierd when this "mysterious" effect takes place.
    I'm sorry I can't help you. I really which I could.

  • IPod model A1059, freezes, unresponsive to all click wheel entries.  Reset does not work.  Does not show up in ITunes or on windows explorer.  What is the problem and how do I fix it?

IPOD model A1059 appears frozen and is unresponsive to all click wheel entries. Reset does not work.  Does not show up in ITunes or in Windows Explorer.  What is the problem and is there a fix?

If you are unable to reset the iPod (assuming the hold switch is not in the On position either), then you'll have to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then connect it to a charger and leave it to charge for a couple of hours.

  • IPod 20GB 'Click Wheel' / Uninstalling iTunes 11. Wont Recognize. PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi everyone.
    Ok here's my situation.
Im using a MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5)
    iTunes 11.4 (64Bit)
    iPod 4th Gen. (White 20GB 'Click-Wheel')
After doing a system restore on my ancient dinosaur ipod 4th gen. (the white 20GB 'Click Wheel') and 'upgrading' to iTunes 11 i've had nothing but problems.
So now when i plug in my ipod it charges fine and even say's "Do Not Disconnect" *BUT* there is no 'on my ipod' button. I cant see my playlists, add songs, delete songs or anything! I just want to 'DOWNGRADE' my itunes and have everything how it was before. I find this to be a science project in itself and no amount of searching youtube videos gave me a clear answer, it only made me more afraid and confused of going forward with this.
I tried downloading 'sharepod' for MacBook Pro but this is pointless because it needs itunes to recognize the ipod for it to recognize the ipod. Ehh.
I did a 'system restore' on the ipod but when i went home where all my music is (on a windows PC) it said i have to do the restore again because it was restored on a MAC. So i did the restore again on my Windows PC (put all my music on it) and now i want to add songs from my MACBOOK Pro and its not even recognizing my ipod. Arrrgh the frustration i tell you!
Im done doing the system restore and i just want to add playlists now. Why is this soo difficult? Someone please help a newbie out. Im great with computers and feel like i honestly should have never upgraded the itunes in the first place because i feel this is what is causing my problem. I've heard the older gen. ipods dont work as well with the newer versions of itunes although im not sure if there is any truth to that or is it just rumors. Either way can somebody please take me on a step by step of what to do next? Please with a cherry on top?

I guess nobody else has had this problem?
Does anybody know if you can e-mail apple direct to express how useless their services are or even to try to get an explanation from them of how to correct the problem before i throw their ipod in the bin?

  • IPod Nano (4th Generation) switches on when connected to USB power - shows Menu & hangs (unresponsive to click wheel) - deems off after 5-sec - Switches off after disconnecting from USB Power - syncs with iTunes - Tried 5R's - Problem still persists

    1. The iPod Nano (4th Generation - 8GB) switches on, only when connected to USB power by showing apple logo and displays Menu options thereafter..
    2. However, I can not access Menu as it is unresponsive to click wheel. As a result it is inaccessible to any further use,
    3. NOTE: it displays "Battery Fully charged" icon on the screen without any "Lock" icon.
    4. After  5-sec to 10-secs the screen deems off.. i.e. goes to sleep mode.. And thereafter would probably remain like that (sleeeping) for eternity!!!!
    5. It Switches off after WITHOUT DISPLAYING any Apple Logo immediately after disconnecting from USB Power.
    6. In other words, it can be switched on only through USB power in spite of battery being fully charged.
    7. Interestingly, it syncs with iTunes. It is recognised in iTunes (Latest version 11+).. Displays on screen all commands Like.. syncronising, connecting, connected,
    8. Allows to add Music, videos like a normal ipod & displays all status information in iTunes.
    9. Read Trobleshooting & Tried all 5R's. Registered, Resetted, updated & Restored to iOS 1.0.2
    10. It is now displaying to select Language in place of Menu options, with no access through click wheel, centre button whatsoever... Problem still persists
KINDLY GUIDE ME THE SOLUTION. APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE in advance...

"I get the feeling that this is a software issue that could probably be solved quite easily"
Since you have already tried all the normal troubleshooting solutions, take the iPod to your nearest Apple Store for a *proper diagnosis.* The staff there will be able to confirm if your problem is software or hardware _*at no cost to you.*_
