Clicking a file during "save as" changes name to that filename

This is an old peeve about OS X.
Do a save as... on this page. In the save dialog box, make sure you're in a subfolder (navigate into one if necessary). Also make sure you're in icon view or list view. Now assume you don't want to save the page into this folder, but in its parent. So you navigate up a level using command-up arrow or by clicking in the drop-down menu at the top of the dialog box.
Now you are up a level but the selection is the subfolder you were in a moment ago.
If you click "save" you'll be back in the subfolder, which you don't want.
If you click on a different folder, you still can't click "save", or you'll be in that folder.
If you try to "click off" by clicking on a filename, the name of the file you're saving will be replaced by the name of that file.
If you have enough screen space, you can expand the dialog box until there's empty space in the file list, then click there. But this isn't always an option.
You may be able to go up another level, and then down again into the folder you want, which will eliminate the selection, but this is crazy.
What I'd really like to know is, does anyone find the italicized behavior above to be functional? If not, why does Mac OS still do this? (Note, it didn't do this prior to Mac OS X.) And is there a better approach than the ones I've given, to move up a level in the folder hierarchy when doing a save?

Kurt, Steve, thanks for your answers. I think I see the reason for the discrepancy. The behavior doesn't happen when you use the popup menu. It does happen if you use command-up arrow to navigate to the parent folder.
Again, if there aren't too many files in the parent folder, one workaround is to expand the save dialog box...but that requires you to take your hands off the keyboard. A lot of the time, I'm using command-s and would rather not pick up the mouse. And it may not even be an option, if the are a lot of files/folders in the parent folder.
The "foolproof" approach, which can be done entirely at the keyboard, is to do command-up arrow twice, then navigate back down. But this is pretty clumsy and unintuitive.
What bugs me about this isn't the danger of overwriting a file (somehow I've never fallen for that pitfall) but the annoyance of not being able save the file under the name provided, e.g. when saving a web page (or a PDF displayed in Safari) or doing right-click > save as (again, typically on a link to a PDF).
I've never had a need to pick up a name from the Save (As) dialog box. So for me this feature is completely anti-functional, and I really wish there was an option or hack to disable it and let "click off" just remove the folder selection. Even better, if I could remove the folder selection using a (non-kludgy) keyboard approach.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - PDF Optimizer fails when selecting overwrite file during save process

    Hello Everyone,
I am wondering if Acrobat 9 Pro has changed in the way it handles PDF Optimizing functioning when trying to overwrite the file you are attempting to optimize. In Acrobat 8 Professional, it overwrites the file just fine when it gets to the save process. It does work when you modify the name during the save process, however, it would be nice to know if this is "the way it works" or the "program has an issue".
    Thoughts?
Message received when trying to overwrite the file,
COnversion Warnings> "An error was encountered while saving the document."
Logically, it seems as though the application cannot save over an "opened" file thus dumping that message on me.

  • Using referenced files in Aperture and changing names of Master files

My Aperture library (masters) are stored on an external hard drive. The label for each image is simply the one that the camera supplied on the SD card. After importing the images into Aperture, I give them a more meaningful version name. Is there a way I can now add those version names to the masters stored on the external hard drive? (I would eliminate the numbers provided by the camera) Please give specific steps if this is possible. Thank you so very much!

You can change the name of the Master as it is imported into Aperture, have a look at the manual regarding Import Options:

  • IW51 - Badi during save to change item data

    Hello experts,
we are trying to modify on service notification the item data (classification data).
We are trying to do it via BAdI Interface IF_EX_NOTIF_EVENT_SAVE.
Once we reach that badi we want to update classification data using function BAPI_OBJCL_CHANGE.
We pass the document number we have to the object key of the bapi (qmnum + fenum).
But bapi returs us message that document xxxx does not exist.
When we test bapi vie SE37 it works .
But in the badi it seems failing cause the document is not yet commited.
Do you have an idea of how we could call the bapi to change item data with document number saved before ? (other badi, exit, other solution,...)
Or any other idea could be welcome.
    Thanks for the help.

  • When I save a file on Google Chrome the file saves as a Firefox File. How do change it so that the file saves as a Google Chrome file?

Recently i have updated my Google Chrome and this has never been an issue. Im using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
I have tried to Change Default settings in Google Chrome (did not work) also i have restarted my mac but the same problem still occurs.

No.. sorry.. it does not seem possible effect .. if you can write you must be able to read..
Are you using the TC with user profiles?
What security are you using for disk access?
What happens if you do turn on full guest access to read and write.. ?
When the Mac that can save but cannot read does drop the file onto the TC,, can the other Mac's see that file? In other words is the file really there.. has it copied correctly. I still think if it has copied and you cannot read it back there is some permissions issues.
Try creating a new user on the Mac that has issues.. and see if the new user and read and write correctly. Make sure the new user has at least equal rights as the users on the Mac's that can read and write without issues.
Your intial question suggested this problem was spread over more than computer.. your second reply has reduced the issue to just one computer.. logically the issue is not the TC.. it is that computer. Ironically I have found logic for computer troubleshooting falls well behind voodoo.

  • My SUID File has apparently been changed, what does that mean? Seems to affect my speed.

My SUID file, whatever that is , has been changed and is not fixed when I use Disc utilities to correct permissions. seem to be slowing things down.

That change is not the issue, does not need "fixing", and is not the source of your slowdowns. If it were a real issue, Apple would be providing a fix for it every time (else the genius Bar would be swamped with visits to fix that).
Please describe the SYMPTOMS you see in the greatest detail you can so that others can help you determine exactly what might be happening to your Mac. Slowdowns happen for dozens of different reasons.

  • Illustrator CS5 crashes every time the destination is changed during save & save as

I have a new Macbook Pro Retina with OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.1.
Every time I try to change the destination folder for a file during "Save" or "Save As" in Illustrator CS5 the program crashes & I get an extensive error message. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling Illustrator 3 times but the issue persists. I have tried installing it both with the original Creative Suite disk I purchased in 2010 and with the download from Adobe's website, and neither made a difference. I have not experienced any problems with the Photoshop or InDesign programs from the same Creative Suite package.
Please advise on how to fix this issue.

  • File type changing during "Save As" - Help!

Good Morning!  I have a set of tif files converted from RAW that I'm resizing for an order for a client and every time I do a "Save As", the file gets changes to an extension of $CB, then Adobe and nothing else will recognize it.
    The history;
Converted RAW to Tif in Bridge CS3
Opened in PSCS3 extended - cropped to size - do the Save As, still shows the file as a Tif in file type - reopened the original to make another size and noticed that file I just created is not there.  No, I didn't save the file with the same name, thus Save As.
My normal file naming, I just add a designated letter at the end of my file name to indicate the finished size ie.. legion post 576_001D.tif (D = 8 x 10)  The original file would be    legion post 576_013.tif.  I did this on 3 different computers, using PS 7.01, CS2, CS3 and CS4, all the same results.
Also, I can view the original tif in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - as I normally am able to, however, this new one comes up with the error and unrecognizable file.
Now I'm wondering did the RAW conversion did something.
Help, I need to get these off to my printing service!
    thanks,
    Jan

    Never mind!  Found the problem!
For some reason, there was a check on the “Hide Extensions for Known file Types”.
I had to Go to Tools – Folder Options – View and uncheck “Hide Extensions for Known file Types”.  Would have never guessed that one!
You know one of those places your always changing things in!!!!! NOT!
    Anyway, it works!

I keep getting a warning stating that the document could not be auto saved in pages. The file has been changed by another application. Then it says click save any way to keep your changes and save the changes made by the other application as a version, or click revert to keep the changes from the other application and save your changes to a version.
What in the heck does all that mean, and why are they trying to behave like a Windows product or a Microsoft office product. I just don't get it.
Why is another application changing my documents? It's like they've created a virus within their own programs. It's a pain in the neck and makes no sense.

I am also having the issue of a warning saying "could not be auto-saved in Pages. The file has been changed in another application. I then hit "save anyway", the warning will go away for a time, sometimes minutes, sometimes hourr, but then the warming reapprears saying the same thing. This is not the case with all Pages documents but it is the case with many.

  • How do I get a "Details" display--as the default--when downloading a file, in the "Enter name of file to save to..." dialog box?

When I receive an attachment to an email, and I click it and select "Download", I get the "Enter name of file to save to..." dialog box (because I already set the option to "Always ask me where to save files." But the file display always defaults to a "List". At least recently. I don't recall it always doing that. In any case, I want it to default to a "Details" display, in ascending order, as I can then find things sooo much faster that way. (I often use the "Date Modified" tab to bring to the top the most recent version of a file.) I know that I can go to the "View Menu" icon and select "Details", but each time I go into a sub folder while in this dialog box, I have to do that all over again and it wastes a lot of time and attention.
I did some internet searches but didn't find a way to fix this.

    Thanks for reaching out, glennr.
The dialog box you are describing is controlled by Windows, not Firefox, so unfortunately Firefox cannot change what you see by default.
I think your best bet would be to ask on the [http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp?auth=1 Windows support site].

  • "The file [name of file] may have been changed by another user since you last saved it." Issue affects both network and local files.

When a certain user saves a file in Excel 2010, she gets a message: "The file <name of file> may have been changed by another user since you last saved it."  She can choose to save as another file or overwrite with her changes.
This just started happening a week or so ago.  She was concerned that someone else was accessing her files, but we did several tests that opened, made a change and saved in a matter of seconds, and she still gets the message.  It happens on
most files, but not all – both network and local.
We already tried the QFE_Saskatchewan registry fix.  I also checked the file server for Services for Macintosh.

You may be confused by the error in Excel saying “another user”. Actually Excel cannot tell who (the real human) is editing the file. Based on my research the No.1 possibility of the error is KB2626998.
2626998  Connection to a network document is lost in the 2007 Office system or in Office 2010 after the computer resumes from standby
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2626998
For Excel 2010, follow these steps:
    a.  Click Start , click Run , type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK .
    b.  Locate and then select the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Options
    c.  On the Edit menu, point to New , and then click Dword Value .
    d.  Type NetworkAvailableTimeInSeconds , and then press Enter.
    e.  Right-click NetworkAvailableTimeInSeconds , and then click Modify .
    f.  In the Value data box, click Decimal , type a number value, and then click OK .
Note This registry subkey sets the time, in seconds, that Excel waits for the network to resume. For example, if you type 15 for the number value, Excel waits 15 seconds for the network to resume. You might have to do some tests in your own environment to
determine an appropriate value. You may have to try multiple numbers.
    g.  Locate and then select the following registry subkey.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\office\14.0\common\Internet
    h.  Repeat step 2C through step 2F again. Reuse the same value that you used previously.
    i.  Exit Registry Editor.
Feel free to post back. Thanks.

  • Acrobat 11 will never let me save changes to an existing file, only Save As

Every PDF file i try to mark up (highlights, comments, etc), I am unable to simply SAVE the changes.  Acrobat says "The file may be read-only, or another user may have it open.  Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder".  I have to use the Save-As function to save my work.  I need to be able to modify and existing file without creating a new instance of the same file.  This message appears regardless of the files location, the file, and no one else is using the document.
I have tried altering my set up in my preference, under document, to Never view documents in PDF/A  mode.  That did not help.  I uninstalled and then re-installed Acrobat.  I have tried the Repair Acrobat Installation function, I have checked for Errors, I have checked for updates, but nothing has helped.
The strange part is that just my user on the computer has this problem.  I set up a second user for guests and that log-in has no issues saving a PDF file after it has been modified.
I am Currently Using Adobe 11 on Windows 7 platform.  The computer is 1 month old.  But this problem has been present since the beginning.  I am set up as an administrator on the computer, so permissions are not an issue.
What do i have to do to fix this?

    Hi Jordan ,
It could be possible that somebody else is accessing the file as well as mentioned in the error message.
The second reason could be ,the creator of the file is someone else and the permissions have been set as read-only.
If possible please share the file with us so that we can have a look.

In Pages, In the past, I was able to edit a template and "save a version" to update the template. Now i have to rename the template to save the changes. Why is this happening? what happen to "save a version"? its no longer an option under "file". And I can no longer open the actual template, when template is clicked, it automaticaly opens an "untitled" version???

In your description you say the first document opens as the Title you gave it.
Templates always open as Untitled so it sounds like you have saved a regular document, perhaps into your templates folder which is possible.
Since you have already worked on it and it has been previously saved, Lion will now Save for you and Save a Version is available
The other document does open as Untitled so sounds like a real template and as Peggy has pointed out will not have either Revert nor Save a Version until you Save it and have changed something in it.
This is a classic example of just how Apple's supposedly "simplification" of the process, is leading to confusion of what has happened. That the conditions and resulting actions from those conditions is so convoluted says it all.
It all reminds me of the Monty Python Life of Brian sketch with the "simplified" John Cleese instructions to the class, as to if you have a brother in an older dorm whether to hang your hat and bag on the hooks provided. The trouble is Apple does not get the joke, that it is transforming itself into a frequently self contradictory bumbling bureacracy. The price of unchallenged self appointed geniushood.
The incoherent half baked stumbling juggernaut has reached new triumphs with its edict on enforced Sandboxing on developers when it is unable to follow even its own instructions.
