Clicking anywhere on one monitor loses the active window in the other monitor

Windows XP Pro, two monitor setup which has worked without issue for well over a year. Still works, with the following quirk: Suppose I am sending an email and I wish to attach pix which I am selecting from Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) on the left side and my email front end on the right side. I have a few other windows open on the right side, in the background. I am just picking photos shown on the left monitor to attach to the email I am working on in the right monitor. Simple.
The email front end is on top of any open windows on the right. When I click on the left screen, the right screen (apparently) reverts to whichever window it thinks is "most important"...but in any event, the desired target window goes away so there is no place to drag & drop the pic to. UNLESS, of course, my target window (the email front end in this case) is the "most important" window but there is no way (that I know of) to achieve that or to know in advance whether it is or is not....>>THAT<< being able to "pin" a particular window as "topmost" or "topmost until I change it" would solve the problem as far as I'm concerned. Yet I have never had to do anything like this before. Got something going on the right hand screen? Go to the left screen? Why should anything I do on the left influence what I am doing or what I am seeing on the right? It shouldn't. When I leave one screen, it should stay just how I left it.
Likewise, if I have a piece of stock tracking software running in a window on the right and Excel on the left side, when I click anywhere on Excel, the stock-tracking window goes away and reverts to some other window which (I guess) must be "more important". I would somehow need to be able to designate whatever window I am working on on the right screen as "most important"....this would fix the problem. But again, I have never had to do this before. Go work on the other screen, and the screen you left remains as it was. (How could you work if it was different??)
And by the way, it appears to work the other way (excel on right, stock-screener on left, or....WDOs Explorer on right, email on left.)
Frustrating and non-productive. It never did this in the year or more I've been using the same hardware. Dumb 5-year old hp desktop. I recently replaced my hard drive. I know I updated FF some months ago but this problem is much newer than "months ago"...it just started to occur about a week or so ago! It's quite the PITA.

I FIXED this problem: DEinstall Firefox, REinstall Firefox. Done.

  • Where's The Activity Window in Safari 6?

    ?

    I tried re-installing 5.1.7 but it immediately crashes now. Switching the Safari 6 file for the 5.17 file isn't enough; there are probably other files that need to be downgraded also but I didnt want to play around with that. I have found a weird, obtuse work-around, though.
    1.      Enable the Developer menu under Preference...Advanced.
    2.      Open the Web Inspector BEFORE you get to the page with the movie you want to save. You can actually go to the page first, then open the inspector, then hit back then forward to reload the movie page. Just hitting reload may also work.
    3.      In the left-most pane there will be a list of folders; one should be titled "Other". Reload the page to get this folder if it's not there. I don't know what to tell you if there is no "Other" folder.
    4.      Click the triangle to open the Other folder.
    5.      One of the things listed in Other should be the movie file; click on it.
    6.      In the right-most pane the full url of the movie willl be listed. Copy this URL just like you would've from the activity window.
    This has worked for me. I'd rather have the Activity window back.

  • Labview as the active window disables 1 or 2 concurrent while loops

    I am trying to get familiar with new mutltifunction DAQ hardware from IOtech - a DAQborad/2000.
    I have a simple vi consisting of two while loops which should be running in parallel. One acquires analog input data, the other handles DAC outputs.
    When I run the vi, the analog acquisition while loop runs fine, but the DAC while loop will not run if labview is the active window on the pc (frontpanel or diagram). If I make another window active, both loops will update as they should.
    I can resize a windows explorer window to make it small, run my vi, make windows explorer the active window and see the vi running both loops and updating as it should in the background. If I use the "Highlight Executi
    on" tool on the diagram screen, both loops run as they should.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Many third party drivers default to running in LV's UI thread, and if
    they put the thread to sleep, other LV threads can run, but not the UI.
    It is also possible that one of the loops is hogging while the other
    is being starved.
    So, I've got two suggestions to try. First try putting a delay of a few
    ms in the busy loop. This might help with the starvation. The second
    thing to try is to open up the IOTech VI and try setting the DLL node to
    be reentrant. This will allow the node to run in any thread and not
    force it into the UI thread. Beware that if the DLL isn't threadsafe,
    this could lead to data corruption or crashes, and before leaving it s
    et
    this way, you should probably contact IOTech to see if their DLL is
    threadsafe. If it is not, contact NI tech support and they can help you
    determine if it is safe in this case to leave it running in other threads.

  • Keeping the active window within an app to the front

    Hi, was wondering if I could keep the active window of the app I am working in to the front.
    For example I open Mail, I then start composing an email in a new window. Then I leave mail and work on an Excel spreadsheet. When I click on the Mail icon in my dock it has the Maill window on top with my Compose window behind. I then have to cmd~ to get the Compose window back to the front.
    Hope this all makes sense.
    Thanks

    thanks for the response,
    so when i swipe up to mission control i should click on the app icon in the dock? how will it know which window i would like to see?

  • Urgent!! How to capture the active windows

    I want to write a program to capture the active windows in the Windows desktop. Can anyone help me. I know to use class "Robot" to capture the screen, but how to determine the position of the active windows in the desktop.
    Thanks...

    This code could work to capture the desktop screen:
    Dimension d = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
    Image imgs;
    try{
         Robot r = new Robot();
    Rectangle rect = new Rectangle(0,0,d.width,d.height);
    imgs = r.createScreenCapture(rect);
    }catch(AWTException awe) {
    System.out.println("robot excepton occurred");
    Try this!!!

  • I have a dual monitor setup.  When I paste develop settings from one image to another, Lightroom switches the active window.

    Strange problem.  Lightroom 5.5.  Windows 8.1. Dual monitor setup.
    I'm processing a large batch of photos.  I have Monitor #1 set as my main develop window, with Monitor #2 set only to display a larger version of the image I'm working with. If I copy the develop settings off of one image and try to paste them onto another image, Lightroom will switch from Monitor #1 to Monitor #2 as the main develop window, and will not display anything on Monitor #1.
    If I then try to paste develop settings onto another image on Monitor #2, LR will then display a larger version of the image I'm working with on Monitor #1.
    To work the way I want to, I have to continually drag my develop window back to Monitor #1 every time I try to paste develop settings onto a new image. How can I make this stop?

    I just tried what I think you’re saying you’re doing and I don’t have the problem with LR 5.5 on Windows 7 SP 2.
    Does the same thing happen whether you use the key shortcuts vs the Settings / Copy/Paste options on the menu?
    I ask this because if you’re using the keyboard shortcuts, maybe you have some display-manager program that has bound itself to the Ctrl-Shift-V (paste settings) to the function of move-to-other-monitor which would do at least part of what you describe.
    You can also test this theory by doing a Ctrl-Shift-V with an application other than LR as the active window and see if it moves.  I suppose Ctrl-Shift-C might also play into it so try both of these hot-key combinations with a program that isn’t LR.
    If none of this sheds any light on the situation, then give a more detailed description of the low-level functions you’re doing to accomplish the copy-paste of settings, so someone else could replicate the steps exactly.
    Specific detailed steps, like:
    left-click on source photo’s thumbnail in the filmstrip
    press Ctrl-Shift-C to copy the settings
    click Check-None
    enable the white-balance and calibration checkboxes
    click Ok
    left-click on destination photo's thumbnail in the filmstrip
    click on Settings / Paste Settings in LR’s menus to paste the settings to the selected photo

  • Where did the Activity window go in Safari?

    Updated to Mountain Lion and now the activity window in Safari has disappeared.  I use that a lot so am really hoping it still is accessible.  When I search activity window in Safari help, I get this:
    You can monitor and examine each element of a webpage loaded by Safari. This is useful if you want to view the structure of a webpage.
    Open the website using Safari, and then choose Develop > Show Web Inspector.If the Develop menu isn’t in the menu bar, open Safari preferences, click Advanced, and then select “Show Develop menu in menu bar.”
    To view webpage resources in the Web Inspector’s sidebar, choose Develop > Show Page Resources.
    But there is no menu labeled "Develop" and nothing called "Web Inspector".  So what's up with this?????

    If you still have Lion you can download the Safari 5.0.5 app here: http://siys.blogspot.com/2012/08/safari-505_16.html
    No installation required. Follow the instructions.
    This does not work for Mountain Lion.
    If you have Mountain Lion and truly wish to be able to still use Safari 5 you would need to create a small partition and install Lion. You'd then need to log out of Mountain Lion and login to Lion each time you wish to use Safari 5, which is not all that practical, but it will work.

  • Active Window/Airplay as external monitor

    When I activate Airplay to my AppleTV (as a extended monitor), the active window remains on my laptop.  It should toss the active window up to the AppleTV screen, since that is my active workspace.  IOW, I want it to behave as if I plugged in a physical monitor.
    Thank you for your attention.
    (And excuse my pidgen terminology.)

    Only windows that were last on that display. For instance, if I have a Quicktime video open on the AirPlay display then close the quicktime window, the next time that videos opens with the AirPlay display connected it will open on the AirPlay display (it's last open position). Additionally, if you have a window that was on an external or AirPlay display when that display was disconnected, when you reconnect the AirPlay display the window will return to its previous position.
    What I think you are encountering is an intended behaviour in 10.9, where windows try and restore to their last commanded position, and, in your case, one (or more) or the windows was last placed on the AirPlay display, so it moves there when you connect the AirPlay display.

  • Having issues with setting the "Active Window"

    Hello List,
    I've got a LV installation that runs three LV created EXE's simultaneously. In the "top level" application, the user enters a product model number (by way of a PS2 barcode scanner) to be tested, and that application looks at our network to see if there is a test recipe for the product. If there is, it hides and moves itself to the bottom and maximizes and moves to the top EXE number two. On EXE number two, the user is supposed to scan the product serial number. But on occasion, EXE number two is not the active window, even though it is the frontmost and maximized, so the scan from the barcode reader doesn't go into the field. (Looking at the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, the task for the frontmost & maximized EXE is not "depressed")  A simple mouse click anywhere on the window will make it active, but the users don't have a mouse (or keyboard) (I am able to "remote in" from another computer using a product line "PC Anywhere). I have tried using the "mouse_event" from user32.dll in a "Call Library Function Node", but that doesn't seam to work reliably.
    So my first question is, will the "mouse_event" from user32.dll even fire if my computer doesn't have a mouse plugged in?
    And, if not, does anyone have any better ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    I'm guessing that it would, because Windows has a cursor even if there's no mouse plugged in, but I haven't tried it.
    As for the second question, you could try what I posted here, although you'll probably want to clean up the code - http://lavag.org/topic/12751-how-do-you-make-your-application-window-frontmost/?p=76308

  • How can I make Reader the active window when opening documents?

    I am having trouble with this because right now documents open in the background and Adobe Reader does not become the active window.  This requires an extra click on Adobe to bring the opened document to the foreground.
    Nowhere to be found in Preferences.
    My system is Linux RedHat 2.16.0
    Adobe Reader 9.3.1
    Thanks a bunch.

    Sir,
    Inspect the following methods (all available to, say, a JFrame) - they might help you out:
    setVisible
    setState (to (de)iconify)
    toFront (request to bring to front)
    requestFocus

  • Why doesn't the file progress show in the Activity Window

    In Dreamweaver CS6 the file progress in the Activity Window doesn't show.  In DW CS5 and before you could monitor the file as it uploaded.  You could see how much of the file in increments was uploaded. Now the blue progress bar displays but I have no way of knowing how much of the file has uploaed until it's done.  Is there a way to put that back yo how it was?
    Thanks

    I found the answer to this problem at this link:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/dreamweaver/2012/06/ftp-improvement-in-dreamweaver-cs6.html
    Seems the activity window has in fact changed in CS6.  To see the progress you hold your cursor over the file you are transferring.
    Not sold on DW CS6 so far to be honest...

  • Since yesterday, clicking to read my email gets a blank window, not the email. Same w/ windows where data should be entered (like with online banking). Help!

    Since yesterday, when I click to read my email I get a blank window instead of the usual window with the email itself. The same is happening with windows where data should be entered, like those virtual keyboards for online banking login, or windows where you can add records (like daily electricity and gas consumption). In all these situations, a window should pop-up and pop-up it does - but always blank.
    I already unistalled/reinstalled Firefox and reset it "to its default state".
    Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Problem with the active version of the transfer rule ABAP program with sour

    Hi,
    I have a problem with the active version of the transfer rule ABAP program with source system EXCEL.
    The system does not react to changes done in the transfer rule coding. For FISCPER I have hardcoded the result 'BABABA' and still the results delivered are those from the CSV.
    Resetting the system buffers does not help. The problem is systematic in combination with source system EXCEL (i.e. not only 1 InfoSource).  Checking the active program Extras->Display Program shows the coding (result='BABABA') being there, but
    as stated, the system does not produce the result BABABA, but instead the result of the CSV.
    It seems as if the original version from the very first activation of the transfer rule program remains somewhere and continues to be used.  Does anybody know how to flush it out and get the system to actually use the coding appearing as the active program.
    I have posted an OSS note, but SAP takes it time to answer and I am under time pressure so I figured that maybe one of you know who to solve it before SAP does.
    Greetings and thanks,
    Martin
