'Clicking' during vocal recording & playback

Hi guys, I'm new here and I am having a problem with Garageband and recording live. I am using the TC Electronic Konnekt 8 which seems great, the vocals record at a good level, but there is a 'click' that keeps appearing during recording and playback usually in the louder sections. I don't think it's peaking because the red lights aren't highlighted.
Your help would be much appreciated!
Thanks guys,
Tj

Hi again,
I just wanted to say that there is an annoying latency that goes with it too. It's ever so frustrating as I've spent alot of money on the set up and I am trying to record to deadlines. If anyone can please help, I would be most grateful.
Thank you!

  • What is the cause of electronic buzz during voice recording playback?

I have purchased a Sure 8900 microphone and have recorderd a couple of short files using recorder.xhead. It records fine, but upon playback, along with my voice is a very defined electronic humm in the background. I have recorded without my external speakers on - same problem upon playback. There are no dimmer switches in the area - something I've heard can cause such an electronic clip. The mic cord is very long. I have recorded some distance from the computer- same problem. Note: When I turn my speakers up loud, I hear the same noise. When I shut the computer off, this noise goes away, although the speakers are still powered. Please note: The sound seems to mimic and amplify what I believe is the low humm of the hard drive. Could there be a bad ground in the computer allowing this to bleed through to both the mic and the speaker jacks? Any ideas on cause an/or solution?

Thank you all for the input regarding grounding. This was the problem, but not from a power outlet. The Sure 8900 microphone is has a 3-prong "balanced" connector at the microphone, but then is adapted to 1/8 inch connector so that it will fit the "mic" input jack on the iMac. The result - a conversion of a balanced to unbalanced signal. After describing this to a technician a a local electronics store, he immediately said "You can't go from a balanced to an unbalanced input and not have grounding noise. The reason: one channel shares the ground - allowing the AC clipping to occur.
Solution: The 8900 mic comes with a 1/4 inch adapter making the mic "balanced" if connected. Put the 1/4 inch input over the 1/8 inch input, PLUG THIS INTO A USB mixer and into the USB port- problem solved - no more buzzing AND BETTER RECORDING QUALITY!!!

  • Clicking issue IN recording (not while recording)

I am having this issue getting random clicks/static in my recordings. Not just during the recording/playback process; I checked the audio files themselves so I know it's not just a system thing.
I tried tinkering with the buffer size and low latency mode, but even still these clicks won't dissappear.  It is quite frustrating. We had some great guitar and vocal takes but then I go to listen and there are random-*** clicks all over the place...
I'm using Logic X, audio device is a Focusrite 18i8 (via USB2), Macbook Pro:  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Any ideas as to what could be causing the problem?

Well, that's the smallest buffer size, and it is better avoided exactly because of these kind of crackling errors (a small buffer size can also overload Logic very quickly). Try 64, 128 or 256 when recording, and 512 or 1024 when mixing (I use 128 and 1024 respectively).
Higher buffer means more latency, but also less strain on the CPU.
And it is generally not a good idea to record to your system drive, since there's also system activity going on on that disk. If it's only one or two audio tracks, it should be allright, and if your system disk an SSD, it does not matter, but otherwise I strongly recommend an external FireWire disk to record to (not USB 2).
If a higher buffer size (128 or more) doesn't get rid of the clicking, then you should also contact Focusrite.

  • Midi latency problems during record/playback

I am starting to use Garageband for midi recording--I am going through an M-Audio Audiophile interface by firewire--when I preview the software instruments everything is fine but when I record then the recorded notes are dropping out or delayed during record and playback--how can I solve thhis problem?
I have already followed the Garageband help suggestions for settings
    I would welcome any help!

Do they have the same interface as you? I get very little latency on my iBook G4 and I am using usb 2.
Before getting my external drive I had been recording successfully on my iBook's hardrive. Besides eating up hardrive space I had no problems. Much of what I do uses GB's excellent software instruments and MIDI.
Software instruments are strenuous on the cpu and ram. What is your ram situation?
I also lock tracks as I go along, especially with software instruments. Avoid using effects during the recording stage, add the effects afterwards.

  • Clicking sound while recording

I started a podcast with some students at my school. We recorded out second one last week and while garageband records a clicking or tapping sound is in the background. ou can hear it while we record and during playback. I'm sure i is some setting I need to turn off that I accidentally hit, but I cannot figure it out. Any ideas?

If its consistent and regular, its the metronome, if it is irregular and spikey, make sure that everything near the computer and mic are well shielded and that all other apps are turned off when runnign GB. However, hearing it during both recording and playback, as SL-R suggests, must be the metonome count.

  • Saffire clicking sound when recording

I am having a problem with my Saffire. I just got it in today.
I set it up, connected my mic, played around with it to learn the controls, etc. So I load Logic Pro 7.2, and I record on track 1. I then listened to the track playback in my headphones connected to the Saffire. So no problems recording on track 1.
Having only one mic connected to my saffire, I go to track 2, and set it for input 1. I start to record track 2, and I hear a clicking sound. The audio is recorded to track 2, but the entire time recording, I hear this click sound that wasn't there when I was recording track 1.
I thought I maybe did something wrong, so I started a new song. Recorded on track 1 with no problems. Then went to record track 2, I hear the clicking sound during the recording. Playing back both tracks recorded, there is no clicking sound.
Anyone know why this is so? I'm using a MacBook 2.0GHz Core Duo, 2GB ram, recording on the internal drive. I downloaed the universal binary versions of the plugins and software for the saffire, and have the latest firmware. Running the latest version of Mac OS.
Also, when I'm in the saffire control app, I can't choose Preferences from the menu. It's grayed out. Is this normal?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

It's rythmic clickin.. sounds like a metronome, but I don't have one playing. I even deleted the click track. Also, I created a new song.. and I hear the clicking even recording the first track if I have the playback in my headphones. So if I have my Saffire control panel set to TRACK, I hear the clicking when I'm recording to Logic.
I didn't change the I/O buffer size, I'll have to check to see what it's on.

  • OATS - Browser is not getting launched when I click on the record button.

    Hi,
I've just installed Oracle Application Testing Suite in my machine. During the installation process I was intimated that the EmpAppServer in the installation path does not contain the jboss binaries. However, it allowed me to continue with the installation.
I've installed the OATS and the OpenScript. I need to record scripts for a web application. Now when I click on the record button, the browser is not being launched. I don't get any error message too. I'm not sure if this issue has got anything to do with jboss.
Can someone please help me out?
    Thanks!

Try to run the batch files in the OpenScript directory to disable and re-enable the browser helpers. Which browser do you have OpenScript set to launch, IE or FF? Which version of IE and FF are installed on your machine?

  • Logic 8 freezes when clicking on the recording button (audio)

I am a newbie, switched recently.
When I click on the record button, Logic 8 pauses for more than a minute before starting audio recording normally. The external hard drive where my project files are saved becomes "very active" during the pause and then works normally when audio recording starts.
Thsi happens only on the files I imported from the OMF and Midi files created on my previous DAW (Sonar6).
I tried to record audio in a blank project: no problem at all.
This is not a problem of the external drive spinning off when not used because Logic freezes everytime I click on the record button even if I do it immediately after a previous (very short) recording test so the hard drive does not have to spin back on. Tried on my 3 external drives (2 USB, 1 firewire) same problem.
All my external drives are also used with Windows so they
    have the Fat32 format.
Copied a project file to my MacBook desktop: no recording freeze problem!
Might be linked: I am a bit surprised with the project file sizes: 500 to 600 MB each file created from OMF and Midi Sonar exports! (average 5 audio tracks, 5 instrument tracks, I use Stylus RMX for drums).
They were much much smaller on my PC as Cakewalk Sonar files. Are these normal project files sizes with Logic?

At a guess I'd say - is your external drive Mac-formatted or PC formatted? Seeing as you were using Sonar, you've obviously come from the PC. You should not use FAT drives, you should format them to the native Mac format.
All my external drives are also used with Windows so they have the Fat32 format.
    Ah. There you go.

"Normal" is entirely relative. Some people's projects are much smaller. Some are much larger.

  • Adobe Connect 9 Meeting Recording Playback & Audio

    Hello All,
I have noticed a strange issue with my meeting recording playbacks.
    First Adobe Connect 9.0.2
    Windows 7 Platform
I have noticed that after the recording is over, and I run playback to confirm we got what we need...the connected telephone feed (pgi/centurylink) does not come through on first press of play.
The video stream (slides, screen share) will run properly, but there is no sound upon first press of play. If I click the scrubber and drag it back to the open, then the audio will start to play.
I am ok with this work around...however my learners/audience will not be. I am looking for "Press Play and Listen" functionality to keep it simple.
A curious note (these are often good clues, so I figured I would share) The MP3 player pod which is running in the lobby prior to the start of the speaker, is PC sound and it plays back in the recording with no issue. It is only when the telephone feed starts (layout change, and speaker introduction) that the issue begins.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

As I understand it, it is on the road map for Adobe. Though I've not heard anything other than rumors, so more information would be hard to provide.
I don't know of any third party extensions, other than using something like Camtasia or another screen capture tool.

  • Microphone record, playback in AIR html js desktop app

    hi,
I want to record, save and playback the microphone audio in an HTML/JS AIR desktop app.
I can't find any examples so my code is based on AS3.
But the app crashes almost right away when the SampleDataEvent handler function is called.
Should it be in a while loop sames as AS3?

  • "Noise" during video recording, normal?

Is it normal to hear a hissing/"noise" sound for lack of a better word during video recording on the ipod touch 4? I could be in a perfectly quiet room and I can still hear it. Is this normal or should I return it to a Apple store for another one? I ordered it online but figure going to the local store would be faster.

It has nothing to do with low light at least not in my case. I'm returning it to Apple, I think it's a bad speaker as I ran the memo app in a quiet room (Didn't say anything) and on playback it still made the sound (A shhhhhhhh sound)
Guess I got a bad one

  • Vocal recording

I am having no luck recording vocals.
    I am using a Shure SM 58 and a MobilePre M-Audio.
I have a line in to the usb port and into the mic jack.
When I set preferences for input and output for M-Audio
    I had no monitor sound.
Returning output to 'built-in audio' gives me monitor sound, but
now pushing record brings up a sign saying 'no audiotrack is enabled for recording.'
Help! I have read history posts on the subject to no avail. I did a lot of vocal recording last year so I know this thing works.

    powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Jim,
As Scott indicated, you can change the language for menus and dialogs in the International Pane in System Preferences. If you are not able to determine how to get to this pane, in OS X 10.4 you would click on the blue apple in the upper left corner, and select the 4th option down. This should open the window for System Preferences. The International Preference is the 5th icon on the row at the top, the icon appears as a blue flag. This should show a list of available languages in the column on the left. Drag English to the top of the list, then restart the computer. If English is not available in the list, you can add it by clicking the button to the right and checking the box next to English, then following the previous steps.
In regard to your GarageBand question, it would be helpful to know what computer and operating system you are using as well as what type of microphone and how it is connected. Post back with this information and hopefully we can assist you.

  • Booklet crashing during fullscreen movie playback

My Nokia 3G Booklet crashes during fullscreen movie playback, usually after 30 minutes. I'm using the booklet to play to a LCD screen @ 1024 x 768 via the HDMI output. The movies aren't even HD, just 600-700MB Avi files. I'm using Windows Media Player version 12.0.7600.16415. Anybody else have this problem? The Booklet gets pretty hot playing movies too.

About the temperature you should not worry to much, I would suggest you just to try another player, such as GOM Player, and to see if you have same issue, also If you could submit some logs with the latest Error Logs from your system, so that we can check if there is a Kernel Power issue or it might be related to overheating of your CPU. I had seen full movies over HDMI and no issue with it. I guess might be some software issue.

  • Vocal recording quality issue

so i've encountered another strange problem that i cant seem to solve...
yesterday during a vocal recording session, everything that was recorded through my USB mic sounded very strange. there was a hissing/fuzzy noise whenever any audio was recorded, and our voices sounded odd and just slightly different too. we used the same mic, on the same EQ tracks, on the same file, in the same vocal booth 3 days earlier and everything was recorded crystal clear. we have no idea what the problem is. we also encountered this problem a month or two ago, but the next time we went to record and every time since then, it has been fine. if anybody has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it. it was very frustrating having this strange issue completely ruin 2 recording sessions now. thanks a lot everybody!
