Clicking Finder dock icon opens wrong user home

I have a computer with multiple users.
When one user on the machine logs in and clicks on the Finder icon, a different users' home folder is opened with all locked folder icons and the wrong username at the top of the window.
How do I change the default home seen when a user clicks on the Finder icon?

Try....
Finder > Preferences > General:
New Finder Window opens:
Select something appropriate....

  • Finder dock icon does not open a Finder window when a file is dragged onto it

In Snow Leopard and Lion, when you dragged a file onto the Finder dock icon, a Finder window popped open and you could then navigate to where you wished to place the file.
In Mountain Lion, this behaviour has changed.  Now either nothing happens, or Mission Control Expose kicks in with a blank screen since there are no Finder windows already open to show.
Is this just my install or does everyone find this annoying removal-of a-useful-feature behaviour change?  Seems like a mistake to me.

I never knew the feature existed, so I don't miss it. It also isn't something I'd use in my normal workflow.
However, it is disconcerting to lose functionality that was useful to you.

I do NOT like when I click "Find" that it opens in a separate pop-up window. I liked it being at the bottom left of the page and staying there. It's irksome the way it is. Would you please put it back on the bottom left so it will stay open. It is so much easier.
Also, it is a little irksome that Firefox automatically uploaded the new 9.0 version. I was purposefully not uploading it. I thought it was loading updates to 8.0. You need to add more detail and have a way to give us an option not to update when the pop-up appears.

The Find bar is still at the bottom of the browser window, just above the Add-on Bar if you have it set to appear. No change with it in Firefox 9.0.

  • Double click on Dock to open an app?  Seems a change from 10.6.8.

Is it now necessary to double click on an icon in the Dock to open an app?  When did this change get made?  I find it more inconvenient compared to the single click on 10.6.8.  But then again I found 10.6.8 more convenient in general.  Hated losing virtual desktop grid and Back to My Mac.

Thanks for poking me to look at the console logs! That led me to find the error message:
    App Store[762] <Error>: CGBitmapContextGetBitsPerComponent: invalid context 0x112f90060
Which in turn pointed me to https://discussions.apple.com/message/15431640#15431640
Renabling Spotlight (see http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/10/disable-or-enable-spotlight-in-mac-os-x-lion/ ) allowed the App Store to work again!
Just why the App Store requires Spotlight to work is beyond me.

  • Clicking on Dock icon only brings most-recently-used window to front

In Leopard, clicking on the iChat Dock icon would bring all iChat windows (contact lists, chats, etc.) in front of other open applications, and give focus to the most recently used iChat window.
After installing Snow Leopard, clicking on the iChat Dock icon only brings the most recently used iChat window to the front and gives it focus -- other iChat windows remain behind other application windows (if that is where they were before).
Is this just me? My friend tells me that it still behaves like it did in Leopard on his computer. Any ideas?

In the First Post your Specs said Snow Leopard, now they say Tiger
Sorry, I didn't realize it wouldn't remember that setting for me -- I am running Snow Leopard.
With Chax in Leopard/iChat 4 an extra item was added to the Window menu of iChat that says "Always On top"
No, this is not what I was looking for. I have another machine with Leopard, and it does not have Chax -- iChat windows are not always in front, but they all come to the front when clicking on the Dock icon.
I don't use it on the Buddy List as you can set it on Any iChat window.
What do you mean, "you can set it on Any iChat window"? You mean the Chax setting, or something else?
Are any Minimised to the DOCK ?
No, none are minimized to the Dock.
Chax does not work in iChat 5 and may be the cause of the issue.
There is a beta version of Chax for iChat 5.
I would delete Chax and then the com.apple.ichat.plist to remove any thing in it that refers to Chax and then relaunch iChat.
I deleted Chax and every Chax and iChat plist, then restarted my computer. The problem did not go away -- still, only one window comes to the front when I click on the iChat Dock icon -- the others stay behind other windows.

  • Right Click on dock icon freeze the dock

Using Macbook Pro, 10.6.4. A lot of the time when I was trying to right click on a dock icon, the dock freeze, expose and spaces all not working, I have to call up activity monitor to force quit the dock and everything went fine again.
It's very annoying especially when you're in rush for something important.
Anyone has this experience before or know how to fix it?
    Thanks for any kind help.

I've been having some issues with Dock/Exposé/Spaces (they're all related, as far as I know). Not the same though.
Go into ~/Library/Preferences. You'll see a lot of files called com.apple.something.plist. Remove all the files in which something has to do with Dock, Expose, Finder, or Spaces. Reboot. See if that fixes anything. You could also try the 10.6.4 combo update.

  • IPhoto will not stay open on my Desk top when I click on dock icon?

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me why iPhoto will not stay open, and keeps closing into "Applications" file that, incidentally IS also situated on the dock as well?
This is probably an easy answer..but, I just cannot figure it out!
    Thanks!
    Marilyn

and keeps closing into "Applications" file that, incidentally IS also situated on the dock as well?
Iphoto is an application and so is installed in your Applications folder. The icon on the Dock is a shortcut to the application in the Applications Folder. It's not the app, just a shortcut.
Describe what happens when you launch iphoto?

  • How to shorten delay for triggering Expose when holding click on dock icon?

How do I shorten the delay for triggering Expose when holding a click on an application icon in the dock?

Download and install the Secrets prefPane at http://secrets.blacktree.com/ Open it up and check the Dock->Springing delay setting. This is a SWAG, BTW.

  • Double Clicking on .indd file opens wrong version of InDesign - Windows 7

Every time I try to just double click on the file to open it opens with InDesign CS5.5. I have CC installed and just went through a whole process online with Adobe Support about removing previous versions using the Cloud tool. I removed all but CC 2014. CS 5.5 does not show up in the Cloud tool. I've also tried to go into my system preferences and set it to open with CC2014 by default. First, it doesn't even show up as an option. Secondly, it doesn't let me select it when I browse for it and select it that way.

Uninstalling older versions after installing a new one is pretty much guaranteed to remove common files you need and mess up program behavior.
In general, unless you hack the registry, Windows will always use the last version of a program that you've installed to open files associated with that program, so reinstalling CC2014 is probably the quickest way to get it associated with .indd files (and to reinstall the icon handler, so you see the correct icons, if you don't now).

  • OSX: FF running, but no windows open - clicking on the dock icon should open a new window.

Running OSX 10.5.8, FF3.6.10. If I close all FF windows, but leave FF running, I should be able to open a new FF window by clicking the dock icon. This doesn't work - it just brings FF to the front, but no windows open. Any ideas how I can fix this?

Is an external display connected and turned off? If not, open Mission Control. Do you see the window(s) in any other spaces?

  • How to force safari to open a new window when dock icon is clicked

If Safari is already running on my MacBook Yosemite, and I click on the Safari icon in the dock, the Safari window is brought forward.  The behavior  I want is whenever I click the safari icon on the dock, is that a new safari browser window is opened.  I don't see this option in preferences (or any keyboard  mouse combination) that would make the dock icon open a new browser window.    (an option is available for new windows if you click on a hyperlink, but not if you click on the dock icon) .
p.s. And I don't want to first  have to place focus on the current running safari and then click File New...too many steps when all I want is a new browser window
    Thanks in advance

    Hi css,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to click on Safari in your Dock and have it open a new Safari Window. As you said in your post, clicking on Safari in the Dock brings the Safari window forward. There are a couple of possibilities to help resolve this situation. You can control-click (right click if enabled) on Safari in your Dock which will give you the option to open a new window. You can also click and hold on Safari, otherwise known as Press, to display these same options.

  • Open Buddies window when clicking dock icon, not Messages window

Fantastically annoying that clicking the dock icon for messages does not open the buddy list..this should be configurable.

Right!?!? Beyond annoying, it's like Apple has gone out of it's way to just make little annoyances.  I wish it would just go back to how iChat was, or like you said, make it configurable.
Also, if you close out of all Messages windows, and then put the computer to sleep (this is something I do quite common), when you return from sleep, Messages has completely quit on its own.  Why....??

  • Detecting Dock Icon Click

    Hi,
I'm building an AppleScript Application in XCode and I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to detected when the dock icon is clicked?
    Cheers
    Chris

    Thanks Camelot,
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work in the AS Application. I've tried linking every application and window event in the Interface Inspector that I can but I can't get any of them to respond when clicking the Dock Icon. I can do what I need if I just check for the application becoming active, ie switching from another app to mine, but this obviously only works if my application is not active in the first place. What I really need is the ability to trap a dock icon click even when my application is active.
    Regards
    Chris

  • Finder -600 error. Can only open Finder in background (open -g /path/) after force quit

    Hey there,
I had multiple instances of finder and it kept relaunching so I force killed it from activity monitor. Now Finder, disk image mounter, and trash are all non functional from the front end and the desktop shortcuts are gone. After that if you tried to open it with the icon on the dock (right click icon > open) or in terminal it gave error code -600, the application "Finder" can't be opened. This is not the same as -10814, which i get only if i try to open it as a bundle (open -b Finder).
I can run Finder in the background using open -g /path/ and the desktop restores and I can get to trash and finder with right clicks from dock icons. =/
And that's all I got. I don't know a whole lot else about the system and I am kind of afraid to restart.
If it matters, I recently had a weird hardware thing where my keyboard, trackpad, and all peripheral usb mice/keyboards would not work and I had to do recovery because recovery mode was the only way I could use my mouse/keyboard.
    Thanks for any insight!

    Do a backup.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • 10.5.1 doesn't fix 802.1X WEP os-logon and Go To Folder in finder dock Bug

    Hi,
I still have a bug when opening folder/directory view from the finder dock icon. it instantly locks the finder and i have to kill it to get it function again. This bug doesnt' work when a finder window is open.. (as referred to be me in http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5768515#5768515)
There is still also a bug when i was using 802.1X WEP encryption at college earlier today. when booting leopard it searches for new or known wireless networks and gives me a password dialog. Since I authenticate against a LDAP server (U/P settings stored in the 802.1X tab) ) and also have a certificate, this dialog box is wrong. If i enter my password it also doesn't work!
When canceling the dialog box and going to the wireless menu in the top right screen and selecting my access point, i get connected right away!!
Come on apple, you can do better then that!
Also, please remove or upgrade the "address book" in the terminal application, its still a shame...
    Regards,
    Rick

In my searching beforehand, there were some rare problems in Finder with fonts in the sidebar causing problems. I figured it couldn't hurt. If I don't get any kind of solution here, I'm just going to wipe the computer (data backed up, of course), since I've accumulated quite a few odd things the past 18 months. Thanks anyway.
edit: I just realized what you meant about the /Library/Fonts folder. I did the ~ one too, but no dice.
