Clicking links generates a new tab when I don't want it to

I've designed a basic html site (www.crustycreations.com) with frames. I have links on a top menu frame that open the content on a larger lower body frame. For a long time its worked fine on all browsers, but recently on Chrome when I click the menu links it generates a new tab for the content only with no menu on top. I switched to Opera and for a few weeks things worked fine but now all of a sudden its doing the same thing. So at first I thought it was just a Chrome thing, but with Opera now doing it I am wondering if it might be Dreamweaver despite the fact that I haven't made any changes to the files. Any suggestions to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Frames are bad news for a dozen+ reasons.
Mobile devices have trouble with Frames.
People can't navigate easily on framed sites.
People can't bookmark pages easily.
People can't print pages easily.
The browsers back button is rendered useless on Framed sites.
The expertise to manage Framed sites far outweighs their perceived benefits.
The W3C saw fit to remove Frames from HTML5 web standards because they were a really bad idea from the get go.  Don't use Frames.  Use DW Templates or Server-side includes for your site wide navigation menus.

  • Latest version of firefox keeps opening new tabs when I don't want it to - how can I stop it from doing that?

I'm running 8.01. Another PC next to me is at 8.0, and it doesn't do that.

"Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file ''cookies.sqlite'' that stores the cookies is corrupted.
You can rename (or delete) '''cookies.sqlite''' (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete '''cookies.sqlite-journal''' and '''cookies.txt''', if they exist, in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

When I click links in Mail, it opens Safari, I don't want that, I want Firefox to open, how do I change the default?
I saw no options in either Mail (4.6) or in System Preferences. Very annoying since I never chose that.

  • I have a search window on a new tab that I don't want - how do I change it to show me recently closed tabs and other options?

When I installed the Conduit toolbar, I must have changed a setting because I now see the Conduit Apps search on a new tab rather than my former list of recently closed tabs and other options. How do I change what appears on the new tab when I ask for one to be opened?

  • I want to keep my pinned sites on my new tab, but I don't want history to show up.

When I open a new tab I have favorite sites pinned.
However, random tabs from my history also start to show.
I only want to see the pinned sites and not the history. However, I want to keep my history stored, just not on a new tab.
Is there a way to accomplish this?

The function of the '''New Tabs''' page is to display the sites you go to
the most. You can '''Pin''' the ones you want in place, but that's all.
Are you pinning at position 1, 2, 3 or just pinning where it was?

  • Firefox always opens with two tabs, one the tab I want, plus an additional tab NEW TAB which I don't want. How can I stop the additional NEW TAB?

I open Firefox in new windows for sites I want to go to. I don't open in Tabs. Each time I open an new firefox window and when I restore the windows I had open, each site has an additional tab (2-tabs). The first tab is the site I want up the second tab is NEW TAB. I have to go through 10 to 14 Firefox windowe to close each 2nd and additional NEW TAB to individually close the NEW TABS. I had this before updating to the current Firefox and thought upgrading would solve this issue, but it didn't.

I started in safe Mode. I have the default theme. Starting in safe mode still gave me the same problem. I went back to the normal Firefox and still had the same problem. Yesterday I restarted my computer for 11 Windows updates. I am not going to spend all day starting and restarting my computer and removing my History and whatever else. Firefox should have a direct contact to it's users, to assist them instead of having their users work for them as forum responders and trouble shooters. This has already taken up way too much of my time.
I will say in normal Firefox the additional NEW TAB had no URL in it, but it did have the 12 icons on the page. In Safe Mode it had a URL that began with Chrome and it had a blank page, it didn't have the 12 icons as in normal mode. I don't have anything Chrome on my computer.

  • Clicking a link opens a new tab

    Hi!
I've been using Firefox on my laptop for several months now, and have not had this problem until about an hour ago:
Everything I click opens a new tab. And I mean everything. YouTube video? New tab. Trying to view an email? Said email opens in a new tab. Google search? each page of the search opens a new tab. I frequently use multiple tabs, and like to open new links in new tabs, like when I'm on Facebook and want to listen to Youtube. But now, anything and everything opens in a new tab, and I don't want that. I know some websites open new tabs, but these are sites that don't, as I said before. I've tried the about:config fixes I've seen on the web, but nothing works. I've reset Firefox, and it's still opening every. single. link in a new tab, which is annoying. I thought maybe my Ctrl key was stuck, but it's not. Is there a fix for Firefox that will stop this?
    Thanks

Thanks for the responses guys. I reset Firefox and restarted my computer, and it seems to have fixed the issue.
Phillip, i'm not sure how to disconnect the keyboard, or if i even can on my laptop, however, it did not appear to be a stuck key, but as i was also experiencing the same issues with Chrome and Opera, it may have been the sensitive pad under the plastic key was somehow stuck.
Fred, thanks for that, i'll save it in case i ever experience this again. :)

  • Why does rightclick+t on a link open the link in a new tab, yet rightclick+t on a bookmark on the toolbar grays it out?

This happens to be more of an issue using a trackpad. Then you rightclick on a link and then hit "t" it opens the link in a new tab. when you do the same command on on a bookmark on your bookmark toolbar, it grays the bookmark out. none of the settings have been changed on it. the way to fix it, i discovered is to right click on the bookmark and hit "p" no idea why, but this solved it. I can't find any of these command online, partly i don't know how to correctly search the rightclick command, but partly, it would only probably list the commands that actually show up as stuff to click with your mouse.
I would also like to know why for two different locations that both open a link in a new tab, why the mapped shortcuts are different. for a link, it is rightclick+t, for a bookmark it is rightclick+w. I mean, make it the same commands, it makes much more sense that way.

Because the "T" in "Open Link in New <u>T</u>ab" is underscored in the link context menu (right-click menu)
You are on Windows 7 and by default Microsoft hid that useful information by default in all of their menus.
See item #9 on my page [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/windows-7/win7.htm Windows 7 Home Premium]
<b>Restore missing underscored letters in menus</b> (turned off by default in Windows 7)
    <br>Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center (<b>WinKey+U</b>) → <i>Make the keyboard easier to use</i>
<br>&nbsp; [x] Turn on Toggle keys
<br>&nbsp; [x] Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys
<br>&nbsp; [&nbsp; ] Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen.
<p>Toggle keys appears both under mouse and under keyboard in Ease of use / Accessibility options.
<br>Though I would like to activate the last option, preventing windows from being automatically arranged
would also deactivate my favorite Windows 7 added WinKey+&lt;arrowkey&gt; keyboard shortcuts to resize window to left/normal/right side, or to maximize/norm/minimize window.&nbsp; On a dual/extended monitors this would be left/norm/right on each monitor so left/right arrow actually have six positions passing between monitors.

  • Can no longer set firefox to always open links in a new tab

In the previous version I was able to set a preference that had firefox always open a clicked link in a new tab. Now I have to right click and select the option. I'm disappointed, I want that feature again. Is it hidden somewhere?

    Install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-link-in-new-tab/

  • How do I automatically go to a new tab when I go to a new website without loosing the tab I'm working from?

When I'm in Yahoo email, and I hyperlink on another website in the email, I want to go to a new tab but I don't want to loose the email tab that I'm in. Also each time I am in the web browser and change to a new website I want a new tab for each one, not a replacement in the original tab.

    See [[Tabbed browsing]].

  • When clicking on links that open in a new window, the links don't open and Firefox freezes in a way. I can navigate the page I am on but cannot click to open a new tab or bookmark.

When navigating the internet, if I come across a web page that has a link to open a picture or program in a new window, if I click on it, it does not open. Firefox immediately looses functionality in that I cannot open a new tab with the mouse wheel, right click to open a new tab, or use my bookmarks in either the drop down or toolbar to navigate away. I can usually still navigate the page that I am on, for example, (https://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/AppEntry/apply-online/appindex.jsp), when it freezes I cannot click on any of the content at the center of the page but I can still use the links from the list on the far left. For an example of the pictures, (http://www.insect-sale.com/), if you click on "New Arrivals" at the top of the page it takes you to a list of products that can only be viewed by clicking on them. Usually a picture of the item would open in a small window but it does not and Firefox freezes. This has also happen when I try a view a degree audit on a school's website where a program would usually open in a new window. The only thing I have been able to find that still functions properly when this happens is the home page button. I can click on it or use the wheel to open it in a tab just fine, but if I try and go anywhere else I cannot. The only way I can get Firefox back to normal is to use the Task Manager and end the process. Another thing I have noticed, that may or may not be related; is that my Norton Internet Security toolbar, that should show up below the bookmarks toolbar and above the tabs, only shows up about 1 out of every 10 times I open Firefox. Some days it doesn't show up at all. If it does show up and I log into Identity Safe, the autofill for the programed website works, even if the toolbar doesn't show up the next time I open Firefox.

    Go to Tools->Options->Apps
Here you should see two columns: Content Type on the left, Actions on the right.
Find and select excel spreadsheet or any other content type in the left column. There should be a corresponding action in the right column. What is it? You can use the drop-down list to select the option you want:
Always Ask - Firefox will ask each time: What do you want to do with this file?
Save file - Firefox will save this file to your computer
Use - Firefox will give this file to the program to open it
In case of saving, Firefox will either prompt you every time where you want the file to be saved, or save it to the default location. It depends on the preference in
    Tools->Options->General->Download

  • Why does right-click & "Open Link in New Tab" make the original tab name to change to "New Tab" when I back-arrow in the original tab to reach the original page

I use Google as my home page.
When I do a search in Google I have a practice of opening the search links in a new tab by right-clicking on the link and selecting "Open Link in New Tab". That way I can examine multiple links from the search page, which is now open in the first tab.
The problem that occurs is that when I use the back-arrow in the Navagation bar to return the first tab to its original page, I find the tab name of the original page to be "New Tab" rather than "Google" and I have to click on the "Reload current page" in the Navigation bar to return the tab name to "Google".
    I'm using Firefox-25 on a Linux-Mint 64-bit platform with KDE-4.9.5.

The problem is just with the name of the tab, not with the contents of the page -- the page looks normal??
I ask about the page because Firefox 23 seems to have introduced a problem with Firefox's "fast back-forward cache" on the Google search results page. It is related to the "instant prediction results" feature interacting with Firefox is some different way. (More in this thread: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/970863?page=2#answer-485663])
    Might be related. Not sure.

  • Feature of opening link in new tab when middle-click it has just dissapeared.

Hello! Feature of opening link in new tab when middle-click it has just dissapeared; now, when I middle-click the link, nothing happens - no new tab, simply nothing! It's not issue with a mouse, I've tried another mouse, and it's the same, and middle click works in other browsers; right click and "Open link in new tab" (as well as other options from context menu) work properly. Any idea what happened? Thanks!

Well, something of your advices helped; I don't know which one exactly, but it works again now. Thanks a lot, guys!
Edit: Errrm, I didn't know exactly how this works, so I had the idea to click "Solved it" button next to both above posts, as I really was not sure which one solved my issue; now, as I clicked the button next to first answer, I see it appears as chosen answer, and no more button next to second answer; sorry, Cor-el; thanks to both for your willingness to help anyway!

  • When clicking on link in email, new tab NOT being created, but new window on existing tab - I want NEW TAB for each link clicked on...

Up until today, whenever I clicked on link in email, a NEW TAB would be created. Now, when I click on link, a new WINDOW on existing tab is created - I WANT A NEW TAB, not a window...

Hmmm, which mail site is this?
One possibility is that you had a tab-related extension that automatically opened regular links in a new tab, and that the extension was disabled because it was incompatible with the latest version. To check for disabled add-ons, visit the Tools > Add-ons dialog.
As a short term workaround: you probably know you can force a link to open in a new tab by holding Ctrl when you click the link, or by using the "middle" mouse button (often the scroll wheel). I find that quicker than right-clicking the link and choosing Open in new tab.
