Clicking "Mail" opens Applications Folder

This used to happen sometimes on Tiger, on a different machine.
Clicking on Mail in the doc doesn't open Mail, but does open a new Applications folder window.
Restarting fixes it (so far) but it's worrying.
Why does Mail keep doing things like this?

With Mail open, please click on Mail in the menubar, choose About Mail, and report the exact info that results as regards version -- I doubt this is a problem, but must be confirmed before moving on.
One thing to try would be to quit Mail, drag the Icon from the Dock to go "Poof", and then open Mail from its Icon in the Applications folder. Then control-click on the resulting Icon in the Dock, Options and select Keep in Dock.

I can see my thumbnails for my events in iphoto, but when I click to open the folder, no photos show up. However, when I hover over the thumbnail, it shows the flicker of images
that should be inside the folder, as well as # of images in each folder. It also occasionally says the following when I try to even open iphoto:  "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." So, I am scared to hit "upgrade" for fear I will never recover any of the images as the wording in this quote seems odd. The photos are not in the trash. Did I lose them all? Do you know if/how I can retrieve them?

    iPhoto 08?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I am unable to open applications folder

All of a sudden I am unable to open applications folder and when I try it tells me I do not have sufficient access privileges. Any ideas anyone??

    Hi,
Are you logged in with an admin account? If the answer is no, log into the admin account go into the system preferences under the 'Sharing' section you will need to change the File sharing options.
Alternatively if you are logged in as an admin try restarting your computer and see if the issue still persists.
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to open Applications folder

I am unable to open my Applications folder and my Pictures folder. When I click on either one of them, this box pops up: "There is no default application specified to open the document Applications (or Pictures, if that is the folder I'm clicking on)." In other words, it appears that the system thinks the Applications and Pictures folders are documents. I can access the contents of these two folders by clicking on "Show Package Contents." I have checked many other folders, and they all open normally. I've also run repair permissions in Disk Utility, but that has not helped. I would appreciate any suggestions to correct this issue.

something caused them to be treated as packages instead of folders
When this has happened in the past what happened is the bundle bit got set on some folder it shouldn't have been. As to WHY that happened, I don't think anyone ever figured it out. If one has installed Xcode I know you can easily check on the bundle bit and reset it. Sometimes Apple has the necessary tools installed without Xcode: you need GetFileInfo and SetFile, which might be in /usr/bin if Apple is installing them by default in Snow Leopard (I used to put them online as a public service, that may not be necessary now).
To check to see if the bundle bit is set you use GetFileInfo in Terminal:
    GetFileInfo ~/Pictures
Pressing return after typing the above will return the following:
    directory: "/Users/francine/Pictures"
    attributes: avbstClinmedz
    created: 12/12/2008 11:05:55
    modified: 03/31/2010 01:23:28
In this case the bundle bit is NOT set (lower case "b") although the custom icon is. If the attributes shows
    avBstclinmedz
as it sounds to me like it would, then the bundle bit is set and can be changed using the SetFile command:
    SetFile -a b ~/Pictures
The situation is a bit trickier if the root level, main Application folder also has the bundle bit set, since that folder belongs to the system. One would have to run the command using sudo.

  • Since updating to 13, in the downloads window, when I right click, the "Open Containig Folder" is dark (so it's available) but when I click it nothing opens

I first noticed this after updating to version 13.x and today I updated to 14.x and hoped the problem would go away but it didn't.
Since 13.x when I see files in the "Downloads" window, if I right-click on one, the "Open Containing Folder" is black (not grayed out) so it indicates that it is available, but when I click on it nothing happens. No folder opens. I can trade down my Windows Explorer and find where it is, but that's a pain, when the "Open Containing Folder" should work and take me right to it.
It does not give me any messages, or ask me to choose any program to use to open, it simply does nothing.
    Any ideas?

  • Problem Application - can't open Applications folder in finder

    Dear All,
I went to upgrade an application (Transmission) today, but during the upgrade, my macbook requested to be restarted. I did this, and now whenever that application is encountered in finder, it crashes finder. This means I cannot open the folder in finder, or from my dock. If I search for it using spotlight, it also crashes.
I have tried deleting it through terminal, but when I navigate to the applications folder, and type "ls -l", no contents are listed, though I can still load other applications through spotlight.
Does anyone have any idea what I might be able to do to delete this problem application? I was hoping to just do a system restore using my time-machine backups, but I don't have an install CD, and apparently you can't do that without one of those.
Thank you in advance for any advice!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd launch the Console utility and look under ~/Library/Logs and /Library/Logs for a CrashReporter item. If you see a Finder crash log in either of those locations, post the contents here and someone may be able to help you decipher what's wrong.
I'd also use Disk Utility to do a "verify disk" operation on your boot drive to see if that reveals anything.

If all else fails it's probably possible to use commands in the Terminal application to delete the problematic application, but first I'd try the things I suggest above.

  • Lagging when I open applications folder.

I have about 100 apps in my folder... Sometimes or more like every time I open the folder nothing shows up for about 10 to 20 seconds.. Then they appear. What could be causing this? And is there a fix?

  • OS freezes/stalls upon opening Applications folder

    hey
for some reason or another my computer always seems to freeze for about a minute (whilst emitting some very stressed sounding noises from the processor itself) any time I access my Applications folder. I've tried defragging my hard drive, reinstalling the system numerous times, freeing up space on my drives and, sadly due to my inherint lack of any REAL computer knowledge per se...that was all I could think of. Any suggestions anyone??!!?

Hmm. Could you define the "stressed sounds" a bit more? If you have a ton of applications in the folder, it could be the hard drive doing its thing. Do you hear these "stressed sounds" at any other time?

  • Apple Mail open FLAGGED folder by default, NOT Inbox

I have that issue for a while but would like to fix it
Every time i start Apple Mail, it open the Flagged folder not the default INBOX folder
can someone has some input ?
    deleted the .plist
deleted the "Saved Application State" content
    nothing's changed
    Thx
    Denis

Thank you TomJones75.  When I posted this initially, I was running iOS 6.1.3 and not iOS 7.  I don't think editing the order of the inboxes was an option back on iOS 6.1.3.  With your tip, I was able to re-order my inboxes but it still defaults to the Exchange account when opened.
I.e. first account listed under mailboxes is now an Outlook account and the 2nd is an Exhannge account. Mail still defaults to the Exhange account even though the Outlook is my default email address for the iPhone.
    Good tip though!  Thanks!

  • Make Mail Open Application

    Hi -
I want Mail to open a certain application when I send a text from my phone to my email. I have it set u through rules so that is it receives a message with a certain word in it, it is supposed to run AppleScript /Application/iPanic.app. I think this is how you get mail to run an application. But when I send a text to my computer nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Any advice would be appreciated.

Comcast online email is considered '''web mail''' so you need to scroll down that support page to the web mail section.

  • 3 clicks to open applications

Am I missing some shortcut here?
With Leopard when I was in say safari and then I clicked an icon in the doc such as mail that was already open just hidden behind the safari window, the apps would switch and mail would pop up infront of safari straight away.
Now when I click on mail, it highlights/ shadows it but i may have to click it a further 2 times (3 in total) for mails window to actually show infront of safari.
Am I doing something wrong or is this the new "improved" expose?

My apps are behaving the way you want, just as they did in v10.4.11 (I skipped 10.5 altogether.) I only get the hilite/darkening of the screen when I click and hold on the Dock, not if I just click. Maybe there's a mouse setting interfering in a way that makes a click take longer somehow?

  • I phone 4 has changed settings to require double clicking to open applications and cannot scroll the screen anymore.

My I phone 4 was working okay for the 4 months I had it, then all of a sudden the settings changed.
I now have to highlight an item and then double click on it for it to open. It's impossible to try typing anything.
I cannot scroll the screen either, so when I open the settings app, I cannot access anything beyond the item (brightness & wallpaper) at the bottom of the screen. The phone also now reads out what I'm highlighting and other times like when the screen dims or closes (it tells me that the screen is dimming or closing.)

  • Finder crashes when clicking on Applications folder

VERY weird. Beginning a few days ago the finder on my Mac Pro crashes whenever I clicked on the Applications folder. It makes no difference what finder view I am using (icons, columns, etc.). Even if I click on the alias to the Applications folder in the sidebar, the finder crashes. I cannot view the contents of that folder by any method. The only way I can get to an item contained therein is to search for it using Spotlight.
Thinking that maybe my startup disk was hosed somehow, I ran Disk Utility (repaired permissions and verified the disk) and ran all tests within TechTool Deluxe. Both said the disk and filesystem were fine.
I tried copying the entire folder to another disk, but the copy aborts after the first few items (stops with Adobe Photoshop; the next item alphabetically is Aperture). In case Aperture was somehow a problem, I removed it (searched using Spotlight and then dragged it to the trash). No change in behavior.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to replicate the entire drive to another, newly reformatted drive and made that drive the startup disk. No change in behavior.
It sure seems that the issue has to do with some kind of file corruption (that CCC dutifully replicated) rather than a faulty drive, but I have no idea where to look next for a solution (other than reformatting and reinstalling over 100 applications from scratch; ugh).
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here? Until I can fix this, the Mac Pro is pretty much useless (luckily, I also have a MacBook Pro).

Hi - I too am having this issue.
When I click on any of the items in my sidebar (i.e. -desktop, documents, applications, etc...) this causes the finder to crash and restart.
I have tried trashing the com.apple.finder.plist and running disk utility but to no avail.  I also found this other forum discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1336291?start=0&tstart=0) Where this was part of the post

Re: finder crashes when clicking desktop icon in sidebar - any help?
Feb 2, 2008 3:43 PM (in response to choegl)
choegl, that crash is the same place as andreas's but it got there in a different manor. In the manor I would expect it to. It is trying to retarget the window to your selection in the sidebar and setup List View according to the view options for that folder from that folder's .DS_Store. Its specifically trying to get the label for one of the columns in List View (i.e. Size or Name or Date Modified) but the value it gets from the .DS_Store is corrupt/bogus and causes the Finder to crash (specifically a component underneath the Finder call CoreFoundation via a call to CFStringGetLength). Here's how you solve your problem. In /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app type: +cd <path to problem folder>+
    +rm .DS_Store+
+killall Finder+ Pressing return after each line. You can get the path to the problem folder by drag/dropping the folder into the Terminal window. When the Finder comes back up, see if it still crashes when you click on that problem folder (i.e. your Desktop) in the sidebar. Repeat the steps above for any other folders that behave this way when you click on them in the sidebar. Hope that helps everyone...
btw, I wrote up a bug report on your behalf about this issue and sent it off to Apple (# 5721669)."
I tried this as well and nothing!
Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm at a loss and am hating this issue!  BTW, if I right click on any of the items in the sidebar, I can then click on open to get the folder to open.  HASSLE!  and if I forget (which is likely since I move too fast for my own good) then I crash the finder.  Also, this happens on all the users on my mac.
    Thanks!!!!

  • Open Containing Folder give empty Launch Application window

    Using CentOS 6.4, Firefox 24.2.0.
Clicking the "Open Containing Folder" icon under Downloads only opens a "Launch Application" window, prompting me to "Choose an Application". It says "This link needs to be opened with an application." It seems normally the association gets made automatically, because I've never seen this before. What's the application I'm supposed to choose?

Thanks for responding, guigs2. I've since blown away the VM and started again, so I don't have a screenshot. The new Firefox installation doesn't have the problem.
