Clicking noise from new Toshiba Satellite laptop?

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A5195 (Windows 7 Home Premium). It was bought brand new around 3 weeks ago. I've noticed that, besides the fan noise, the bottom of the laptop makes a clicking or buzzing noise. The laptop has blue screened twice, something about memory management. I don't really mind the noise, I just want to make sure there's nothing wrong with the laptop's hardware.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

With any physical sounds like that, it can be really hard to know if it's something serious or not. Hard drives, optical drives, and fans all have moving parts that can cause noise.
In regards to the blue screens, have you installed many programs? Do you know what you were doing when they occurred?

  • Clicking Noise from New U410

Bought a brand new U410 two weeks ago. Nice computer, but I notice a clicking noise which I assume is originating from the hard drive every so often. It's very low, but noticeable. Tried a few apps to quiet the drive but none worked.
Downloaded a couple of programs to test the hard drive and all is well.
Do others have this clicking noise and if so can I assume it is just the hard drive with power management feature parking the heads?
    TIA!

    Hi
    Welcome to the community.
As your concern clicking noise occurs, I would suggest you to please visit the mentioned below web link and update the Bios.

Set the date to several years in the future
Try to update again - you will get a different error message

  • Equium A100-147 - Clicking noises from the HDD

For a while I have had clicking noises from the HDD and when the laptop failed I assumed the drive had packed up but when trying a replacement nothing happens. I get a blue light for battery and a (faint) blue light for DC supply but nothing for power or disk. However, when I connected an external drive yesterday it booted fine and when I disconnected it the laptop continued working from the internal drive. But again this morning it is dead and cannot boot. I have read that the BIOS can stop recognising the drive or maybe the settings are not being saved when it is turned off. Could it be the motherboard battery ?

If I understand you right your notebook is death now, right?
I really don't know what to do. Remove the battery and HDD and try to start notebook. if the same happen again it is time for new notebook.
I don't think repair is best option because it can be pretty expensive. Satellite A100 is pretty old notebook and you can sell it on eBay. Someone will need it for replacement parts.
Maybe my opinion sounds stupid but I don't know if you have time to search for new parts. I cannot say for sure but there must be some serious problem when you cannot even enter BIOS settings or see anything on the screen.

  • Clicking Noise from hard drive_U410

    Hi,
I hear regular clicking noise from the new Lenovo u410 (windows 8) hard drive.
    How can I fix this?

    Thanks!!
The noise you are hearing might just be the normal sound of the hard drive.  Most hard drives aren't 100% quiet.    The link below is for a Seagate article on hard drive noises for your reference......
    http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/174571en?language=en_US
Are you experiencing any errors or problems with the hard drive ?  Seagate also offers a free SeaTools utility that can be used to check the health of your hard drive.  You can download that free tool at the link below.....
    http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/
As for warranty, the hard drive would be covered under your computer's warranty and that would have expired after 1 year.
As for fixing the noise, the only way to fix the noise would be to replace the hard drive with a new one.  Then again the noise you are hearing maybe just the normal sounds of the drive.
As with any hard drive it is always a good idea to have a back up of your important files on another media. Hard drives have been known to fail without notice.

  • Brand new A655 Satellite Laptop will connect to new Vizio lcd but not older Plasma tv via HDMI

    Hey guys,
So i just purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite A665-S5183X and It works great with my new smaller bedroom LCD TV via HDMI and automatically connects when I plug in the HDMI.
HOWEVER, my older HP 42" Plasma connected via HDMI will not recognize each other.  The TV says it isnt receiving signal and the laptop isnt showing a 2ndary display in the graphics settings.  The HDMI cord works and I watch COX via HDMI to the older plasma tv.....
    what gives???

sorry, let me say im for the most part tech savory. So the FN+f5 only shows the laptop display and not the tv.
If i carry the cable into my bedroom for the newer Vizio LCD tv, the computer automatically detects it and connects it. It is seen in FN+F5 or the graphics control panel.
When i do the same for my main older plama tv, it wont detect it. Nor does my plasma tv sense a signal from the laptop....something must need updated....but what??

  • Strange Problems with Two Brand New Toshiba Satellites

    Hello,
Two weeks ago, I purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite C55-A5300 from Best Buy. Several days ago, it began having strange problems and I had to exchange it for a new one. However, my new one is having the exact same problems as the original. I’ve enjoyed working on and troubleshooting computers in the past, but I’m completely baffled and cannot pinpoint what could be wrong.
Here are some of my symptoms:
Whenever the computer boots up, I cannot click on anything unless I perform Ctrl-Alt-Del.
No matter what web browser I use, there are certain things I cannot click on. For instance, I cannot click the X at the top right corner to exit the browser. When I go on YouTube, I cannot pause the video, adjust the volume, etc.
I cannot drag music onto iTunes from any of my folders or external HDs.
Whenever I try to download a program such as VLC Media Player, the computer won’t let me and considers the file “damaged.”
In Microsoft Excel, if I select one of the cells, I cannot deselect it; and in Microsoft Word, I cannot right click on certain things.
As mentioned, I had these exact same problems on the previous C55-A5300 that I returned. I’ve tried performing system restores, but they do nothing. I haven’t downloaded anything except the programs listed above. Plugging in my external HDs seems to somehow worsen the problem.
I’ve also tried using several mouses, but have still had the same problems. Perchance is there something wrong with my mouse settings, since all my problems seem to be mouse-related?
Any and all feedback is substantially appreciated! Thanks.

glad to hear it fixed itself

  • Clicking noise from back-ups

Since replacing my G5 with a new mac mini I hear frequent clicking noises from the APC Back-UPS that I have it plugged into. The only obvious difference is that the mini has an ungrounded two-prong plug while the G5 had a grounded three-prong plug. The clicking noise consists of two clicks in succession, the second one slightly lower in pitch. This occurs at random intervals but also in response to anything that I'm doing on the computer such as opening or closing an application, resizing a window, visiting or exiting a website, etc. Occassionally it will happen when the computer is asleep in which case I will hear the fan running briefly in the mini although the monitor doesn't wake up. When this happens I will often see the internet activity monitor light flashing on my dsl modem. I don't know if these noises are a sign that something isn't working properly or just an annoyance. In either case I would welcome suggestions on how to stop it as well as any ideas as to what might be causing it. The APC unit provides battery back-up power in the case of a power outage and surge protection. I submitted my question to APC support but got no response. I also talked to someone at AppleCare and he had no idea what was causing this and wasn't even sure if he knew what I was asking about. However lots of people use back-ups units so someone out there must have experienced this phenomena besides me.

I checked that box but wasn't around the sleeping computer long enough to tell if it made a difference. I plugged in a lamp with a dimmer and turned it up and down with no effect. Then I had an idea. I'm going to wait a couple of days before marking this as definitely solved, but here's what happened:
The UPS has three outlets marked "controlled by master." Anything plugged into these gets it's power turned off when the computer is sleeping. I had long ago moved the peripherals to the other outlets because I didn't like having my computer and monitor wake up whenever I turned on the printer just to use the copy function. Near the power button on the UPS is another smaller button with a graphic symbol. If you hold this down for a few seconds it turns off the "master enable" function. After I did this the clicking stopped.
This still leaves some unanswered (though no longer important) questions: Why was this an issue with the mini but not with the G5? Why was I getting clicking noises in response to doing things on the computer even with the usb connection to the UPS disconnected? Why was I also getting them even when the computer was asleep? One possible factor is the usb hub. The old one was on a pci card, while the new one is external with a power cord connected to the UPS. Another factor may be the ungrounded power plug on the mini vs. the grounded one on the G5. At any rate it looks like the problem is solved, at least for now.

  • Question Mark  clicking noise from internal seagate HDD

this morning, my six months old MacBook black (2.16Ghz) screen froze. After force to reboot, my MacBook will not boot anymore while hearing a repeated clicking noise from the hard drive.
I tried Disk Utilities from Original Install Disk but the internal HDD is not recognized.
Then run the Apple Hardware Test, 01 Error found with these code; 4SNS/1/40000000:TB0T.
I don't know what that means.
Boot up MB from Data Rescue II boot CD, still the internal HDD cannot be found.
I know that the internal HDD is not completely dead because I still hear a repeated clicking noise from the hard drive. Is there any ways to recover data from the drive?
Someone suggested me to create "image" out of the hdd by using "dd" command under Terminal.
    Would it be possible?
    I have Apple OEM (Seagate) *ST9160821AS Momentus 5400.3 160gb.*
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've had my share of hard drive failures, and that repeated clicking sound is a telltale sign. Yours is not the infamous Firmware 7.01 drive which were all of the Seagate Momentus 5400.2 series. Sounds like a simple random crash. Unfortunately, these things happen.
You might be able to recover it yourself. If you can't, any repeated efforts to do it yourself could reduce your chances of recovering data if there's something like a failed head.
If your data is that valuable, you might want to bring it to a data recovery service. Most will give an estimate and only charge if they can recover data. Their services will typically be very expensive - around the cost of a new MacBook.

  • Clicking noise on new Mac Mini

I got a new Mac Mini last month and noticed it makes a clicking noise quite frequently. It just started to really bug me, so I looked into it and found this site:
    http://mymacfixes.blogspot.com/2009/06/how-do-i-stop-clicking-noise-from-hard.ht ml
    which says:
On Macs, this is often found in replacement drives for the MacBook and the Mac Mini. Apple modifies the firmware of drives it supplies to avoid this problem, but no one does that for the speedier, larger replacements. Upgraders get more -- or less -- than they bargained for.
How can you tell for sure if your drive is affected? Download a shareware program like smartctl orVolitans Software's Smart Utility and look for the load cycle count. Hard drives are rated for only a few hundred thousand of those. If your drive has gone through thousands or hundreds of thousands in a short time, you're in trouble.
So, I downloaded Volitans Software Smart Utility and see that within the past 10 minutes the Load Cycle Count has a Raw Value that seems pretty high. 15 minutes ago it was 32257 and now it isof 32286... which sounds like about the correct number of clicks that I have heard coming out of this stupid thing.
I noticed above it says "On Macs, this is often found in replacement drives for the MacBook and the Mac Mini" ... hmm, replacement drives? Interesting! I flipped the Mac Mini over to install new RAM after 2 weeks and that is when I noticed 2 big scuffs on the bottom of it. How did they get there? I couldn't believe I had been that rough with it since I was being VERY careful with it. That seemed very strange to me, but now  I think it makes sense. I think they gave me a machine with a replacement drive that was poorly upgraded (and scuffed up in the process).
If I take it in to the Apple Store, will they deny there's a problem (o me it seems pretty obvious there is one)?
Or will they do the right thing and transfer my info to a new machine?

PS - before you reply suggesting I take it back to be on the safe side (which makes sense) can any of you with a relatively new Mac Mini download the trial software above and let me know what your Load Cycle Count is? You just have click the "show all" button under attributes and then find the Raw Value in the right column.
If you can't do that, then could you please make it very quiet in your place and listen for clicking. If your machine clicks a few times every 15-30 seconds or so then either your Mac Mini is screwed up, too, or it's just what Mac Minis do.
    Thanks.

  • Bought brand new Toshiba A500 laptop, but no Windows 7-64 CD/DVD

Bought brand new Toshiba A500 laptop, but no Windows 7-64 CD/DVD's came with it, just the programs installed on the computer. Since I have been a long-time Dell customer, where all programs installed also come with various CDs/DVDs, I am rather surprised, especially when you consider that I bought a complete Win 7 Utl OS. Where are the discs? For me this can be a future deal breaker. Is Toshiba so confident that their machines will never need to see an OS disc?

they havent put the discs in with there products for a few year now. there is a recovery partition on the hard drive you can use for a recovery. they also have a program called recovery media creator on your laptop to make your own recovery media. it is a way that if people dont make the recovery media you have to call and order some and toshiba gets another $25 for the user. there is a section in your users guide( search users guide in start menu) about page 60 shows how to recover from partition.
    hope that helps

  • Toshiba-Satellite Laptop Model C655-55225 stopped working after 90 days

I purchased a Toshiba - Satellite Laptop on 9/30/2011, it completely stopped working on 1/5/12. The laptop was not even used until 12/25/11, as it was a Christmas present for my husband.  I called Customer Service at Best Buy because Toshiba Customer Service has been of no help, only to be told to call Toshiba.  When I called Toshiba the first time they had us run some diagnostics on the laptop, which did not help at all.  The computer will not even power up.  Please keep in mind this laptop was gently used and well taken care of for the two weeks it was in use.  There were no bumps, drops, virus or spills.   I have spent a small fortune on products at Best Buy this holiday season and this is how they treat their customers?  They offered no suggestions or help at all with a product they sold or offered to intercede with Toshiba.  I can tell you with all certainty I will never buy another Toshiba product nor darken a BestBuy entryway.  The customer service is equally awful with both companies.

Did they give you any other reason why they wouldn't send it out? It is a pretty common procedure to send it out under manufacturers warranty and I am surprised they would shoot you down. Did you talk to geeksquad or just customer service?

  • Palm 755P (Sprint) not synchronizing with new Toshiba Satellite L305D operatig Windows Vista.

OK Please help the new guy....
I have a Treo that is a month old. It was previously synchronized with my old computer. My old computer took the dive. I bought a new Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5938t aht is running Windows Vista.
I tried to locate the Palm Desktop via the disk in the Treo box from Sprint. No dice. The Desktop loaded, but I can't synchronize my Treo. There is no available USB connection.
So, I played around with it and tried to get it to connect via bluetooth.... NO DICE.
    Very frustrating.....
Does anyone have any advise at all?
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Anybody out there have a solution?
Has anybody beside me encountered this problem too?
    Please advise.....

Hi.. Welcome to the Palm forums.  My first assumption is your Vista is a 64bit version.  That being the case there are no usb drivers available which is the reason for the problem trying to sync via cable.  You are headed in the right direction as bluetooth is the only way your going to sync.  First the computer has to be bluetooth compatible or you need to purchase a bluetooth dongle and get it installed and then get the two to pair.  From there if you go the the windows hotsync thread here you will find a sticky that explains the process.  Also here is a knowledge base article about how to sync via bluetooth.  http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/nua/launchKB.asp?c=41559

  • Actual dimensions for Toshiba - Satellite Laptop A665-S6050?

    Good Morning Everyone,
    I recently purchased the Toshiba - Satellite Laptop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 16" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Slate Model: A665-S6050 | SKU: 9988697.
I would like to purchase a sleeve for this laptop, but I can't find the true dimensions online.  I don't have the laptop with me, so I can't just measure it.  The specs I'm finding online list the width as 4.2 inches.  Clearly, this is an error.
If anyone has the actual length, width, and thickness of this laptop, please reply.

  • ITunes causes DVD drive to fail in Toshiba Satellite laptops

This seemed unlikely to me and I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences and/or suggestions.
This morning I discovered that the DVD drive on my Toshiba Satellite laptop wasn't working - Device manager said it Failed to Start (code 10). I called Toshiba and they asked what was the last thing I'd done on the PC. When I said, "Updating iTunes," they said that was the problem, due to an interaction between iTunes and Toshiba Satellite laptops.
Sure enough, uninstalling iTunes fixed the DVD drive.
So now I have to install / uninstall iTunes every time I want to update my iPod

Another thing to check on is a device filter conflict:
iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
(One of the applications I' seen conflict in this way with iTunes on a Vista system is HP memories Disc Creator Software, which comes bundled with some HP digital cameras.)
... however, if you're still getting no CD/DVD drive with just the iTunes filters in place, you may be one of the unlucky ones who are getting the issue discussed here:
Optical drives not recognized in Windows Vista after installing iTunes 7
Although it wouldn't necessarily be a short-term thing, keep an eye on that document for updated information about the issue.
In the short term, one workaround might be to use a different application to rip the CDs, and then use the "Add to library" function to get the ripped files into your iTunes. (That way you wouldn't have to continually uninstall/install iTunes.) The following document might be of some help with that:
iTunes: About the Add to Library, Import, and Convert functions
EDIT: sorry Jason, didn't notice you'd already replied here. Didn't mean to butt in.
