Clicking noise problem (DV6 Quad)

As the title says, my laptop is making random clicking noises. Got it on 2/24/12 brand new. Any idea where the noise is comig from? Please help.

I have the very same issue.  I find it very frustrating that HP is not able to respond with an answer to this.  I saw another post on the same problem just a few minutes ago.  My last few laptops were DELL.  I have purchased only HP printers and always been happy with them, but this the first HP laptop I've purchased.  I've already had an issue with a support technician giving me wrong information.  They told me that since I have AT&T Uverse as my internet service provider, AT&T has software to be installed before I can get connected to my wireless router.  I was pretty sure that wasn't right and found out for sure it wasn't correct after talking to AT&T support.  On top of that, I was speaking to someone in China (I'm assuming) that could hardly speak English and was very difficult to understand.  At this point, I feel I won't be buying another HP laptop.  I was seriously considering returning it because of the support issue.  If they can't resolve something so simple, I can't imagine what it would be like if I had a complicated issue to be resolved.

  • Horrible buzzing and clicking noise from the fan - DV6 3046eo

    Hello!
Two weeks ago the fan on my DV6 3046eo laptop began to make almost continueosly buzzing and clicking noise. My laptop is less than an year old (bought in December 2010) and such noise has never occurred before. I have done some "research" to find the reason, but without luck. I have read on Internet that the fan may be broken or loose. I am just using the web and listening the music. I have to admit I played some demanding games on the computer, like BBC2 and Dirt3. But the problem occured later. I can't imagine what will happen if I play games on my laptop now...
The fan seems to cool down the laptop, but it is like something is hitting it every third second or soand preventing it from running silently. The noise is strange and irritating because the frequency changes rapidly. Sometimes when I move the laptop or hit it a bit gently, the loud noise suddenly disappears and the normal continueosly noise takes over (I am ok with the latter one, though). After some while it appears again. The noise come and go. Reboot doesn't help much. I have also used an airspray can, but to no avail. I am thinking about getting the fan replaced by HP before the 1 year warranty runs out. I am not too comfortable to do so myself. What's the reason for this noise and what should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

  • My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

Please help me, I have a mid 2010 Mac book pro with a toshiba mk3266gsxf harddrive. It started making a clicking noise and then my computer crashed. I proceeded to boot in safe mode, but it doesn't work. When I ran disk utility in recovery mode, it showed no problem with my disk. Does any one know what the problem is?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.

My iphone dosen't doesn't make key tone sounds anymore when I write a text message or when I want to dial a phone number I don't know how to fix this problem, I don't hear the clicking noise anymore does anyone know how to fix this problem? And all the sounds on my phone are on, even the keyboard clicks.

Try restarting your iPhone by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, double check the volume button just in case.  If you still can't hear the tones go into your settings>sounds and make sure the options are on.

  • Problem with clicking noise and using hdapm

I'm having a problem with my 2009 17" MacBook Pro, with Lion. I installed a new, larger hard drive, and ever since then a tinny clicking noise has been emanating from the laptop. I tried to install hdapm, and I am able to successfully download the .dmg file and mount the disk image. However, at this point, all I see is a .pkg file. I clicked to install the program, abd then added the command to Lingon to execute 'hdapm disk0 max' upon startup. However, Console said that it failed to execute this command. I tried entering it directly on Terminal, and still no luck. It should be compatible with my hard drive, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. From what I've gathered, there should be another file in the original disk image that I can move into my Applications folder; however, I could not find it anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to resolve this issue? Thanks!

This is not a disk failure problem, regardless of how there are disk failure modes that act like this. It is a hard disk firmware situation that conflicts with OS hd controllers. It is a problem that comes and goes, or gets less of a problem or more of a problem depending on OS upgrades. Although I have it happening with a Seagate drive, it is reported on Western Digital drives.
It is also not only exclusively a Mac hardware problem or software problem. There are comments on Dell's forums, and even a Seagate firmware upgrade (which I fear to do.) There are also solutions where people boot to Unix, do the fix there, then reboot to Mac and it disappears and stays disappeared.
==>> N.B. – In Lion and the last couple versions of SL, you need to place a 'sudo' in front of the 'hdapm disk0 max'. Then it will work...for a while...maybe.
I have modified versions of the airport plist in the past from 'always on' to 'when needed' and that helps until the OS changes something. Then the same 'fix' won't make the constant head parking stop.
Different combinations of programs will start it up. Sometimes just getting the head busy for a while, like playing songs on iTunes, will stop it and upon closing iTunes will continue to keep it off. (Playing songs with a lot of percussion will not disguise the problem since by the time you try that you will be sensitized to hear the sound even when it is -96dB from ambient.)
A new variation with Lion has been to get the click going a couple minutes !!!after!!! putting the system to sleep! In fact, this problem has never been so uncontrollable as with Lion.
...and that is why I am back searching the forums to see if anyone has an up-to-date solution.

A "clicking noise" is often a sign that a hard drive is malfunctioning. Suggest that you power down the device and take it to an Apple store to have them take a look, or contact Customer Service at Apple for instructions.

  • My hard drive is doing a strange sound all the time for a week now, it's not like a clicking noise, it's something else, anyone has this problem too?

Hi guys, my macbook pro is doing a strange sound, not a clicking noise like other users could have, I don't have any apple center closer than 2hours drive so if somebody had this problem too and solved it it would be great!

It could be dying, I would copy my users data folders (Music etc) off to a storage drive (not timemachine) as soon as possible.

  • Audio Problems -- "clicking noises"

I'm trying to play the movie I just created but the audio is messed up. Throughout the piece you can hear "clicking noises" as the people speak. How do I get it to stop? Any help would be amazing. Thanks!

    Hi
Where did Your original video and audio originate from ?
.avi, .wmv files or from iTunes ? - often strange results
import audio as .aiff (export out from iTunes as an .aiff audio-CD and
use this in Your movie projects.)
if from a miniDV tape Camera - then playback in Camera to a TV to listen
on the original and find out if rthis sound is OK.
    • Eventually run a cleaning tape in Your Camera (as instruction)
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    Yours Bengt W

Is this thing a piece of junk?  My MacBook Air is running fine.  I've literally only charged the MacBook Pro battery a handful of times -- it's brand new.

At these prices don't screw around.  Just call applecare to arrange an appointment at the nearest apple store.
Alternatively post in the Macbook Pro forum.  This is the Mac Pro forum.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your hard disk is damaged. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 Alternatively, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone onto an external disk.
Then, look for a hard drive. You can use a 2'5" SATA hard drive, and you can buy it at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ Seagate and HGST drives have good performance, and 7200 rpm hard drives will give you a slightly better performance.
After installing it, start up from the clone (if you made a clone) or hold Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting (if you created a backup). In the second case, you just have to choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow the steps.
In the case of a clone, use Disk Utility's Restore feature to restore the external drive content onto the internal disk > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html You may need to format the hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

  • Clicking noise from hard disk

    Hello forum,
one more hard disk noise problem. My new MPB arrived two days ago and I immediately noticed a clicking noise that is presumably emitted by the hard disk. I've got the basic 250GB model, so it's unrelated to the 500GB noise. The sound occurs quite regularly every 20sec or so, but only when the disk is inactive. The system doesn't freeze. The noise appears regardless whether the disk power saving feature is enabled or not. Here is an amplified version of the sound without the normal background noise (fan, hard disk):
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/ah25f1h/n/ClickingNoise_wav
I've learned that clicking noises are a certain sign of hard disk failure. So should I return it immediately and ask for a replacement?
    Regards

    MKG4 wrote:
It sounds like you've got two clicking noises happening back to back, correct? I have the new 250GB drive as well (5400 RPM) and I'm hearing a periodic click similar to the second one in your clip.
I can hear only the second click, too. Only if I mute the background noise and amplify my recording, I hear the first one. Could you perhaps take a record of the sound that your MBP makes so that we can compare the sounds?
Haven't noticed any other problems with the drive, though. Is yours a Fujitsu? Mine is, and according to their web site, "if the drive is idle it will automatically move the heads periodically to prevent lubricant migration." I'm wondering if that's what the noise is.
Interesting. Mine is a Fujitsu, too, and perhaps the two noises come from the disk head starting and parking.
Actually, it sounds a lot like the 500GB noise, except without the beep. I've seen very few, if any, issues with the 250GB drive, but I'm holding out hope that a fix may come along at some point.
I agree. Currently the sound doesn't seem to be harmful, but one never knows.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Running Slow and Pulse/Click Noise (Not Hard Drive)

Hello. My 13" Macbook Pro mid-2010 (7,1) suddenly began running slow and lagging on certain operations. There is also a light pulse/click noise coming from the center of the keyboard. I am sure this is not a failing hard drive. How, you may ask me, am I so sure??? Well, I originally thought it was a failing hard drive and so replaced the hard drive, and there was absolutely no change, and the lagging and noise still continues. This makes it very frustrating to do basic, low-memory-intensive things like browse on Safari or watch a movie.
I have upgraded to Mavericks, and have 8gb Ram. This problem started suddenly about a month after upgrading to Mavericks. In fact right now my computer is lagging just typing this, Activity Monitor says I am only using 2.75 ram of 8gb.
Steps I have taken with no resolution
    -Replaced the hard drive
    -Reinstalled OSX Mavericks
-Verified and Repaired Permissions (I still get a message the the following item can't be repaired "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent". But I have read that this is a common thing and can be ignored.
-Restarted the computer holding down left shift-option-control and the power key for 10 seconds (not sure exactly what this resets, but some type of system cache thing.
-Reset the PVRAM stuff ( I restarted the computer holding down command-p-r. I'm not sure I did this correctly as it went to the firmware disk repair screen.
Could there be a RAM issue? Does RAM start making noise when it goes bad? I bought my upgraded ram from ebay, it isn't the official Apple Store stuff. Could replacing the ram possibly help? My System Report tells me the RAM is OK.
Putting a message on here for help is the last step before giving up. I can't do much with this computer because it is hiccupy and overall difficult.
    Thanks.

  • HT1363 ipod making clicking noise and won't work

Ipod making clicking noise and won't work. Display see apple store. We live in a rural area so one is not close!

OK, I have the 30G w/video and it does that too. I've had it a year with no problems. My husband went on the treadmill with it a couple days ago and after a few songs it froze. I did the whole regime of toggling and pressing menu/select button, I put in on my Bose speaker/charger and it switched to very low battery warning. When I took it off to move to computer it said to connect to computer and use restore (in a few languages). I connected and it recognized it and I did restore and after a few minutes screen came up saying it could NOT restore. Then ipod was unrecognized and then ipod screen gave me the very sad little ipod picture with the support web site. At that point it began making the clicking nose - morris code does describe it but I was invisioning a little nano sprite in there with a chisel!!So, same as you, I go there and it's like a maze trying to find help!! Of course my warranty was up exactly 6 weeks ago!! I tried linking through all the stuff like finding a service provider in my area, contact the "knowledge base" etc., and I can't get anyone! Now what are we gonna do?

  • Ipod makes clicking noise and won't be recognized by itunes.

I've had this ipod for about 2-3 years (5th generation 30 GB) and all of a sudden it started making clicking noises when i started it. So i connected it to my computer and all it does is (1). Start up with the Apple Logo (2). Make that clicking noise where it sounds a ticking clock. (3.) Please wait, very low battery. (then it goes forward after) (4). Shows some icon with an ipod with dead eyes ( x.x ), emergency icon and it says www.apple.com/support/ipod. Please answer because i have over thousands of songs and i dont have them on my itunes ( i transfer the songs to my itunes. then my ipod but then i had to reformat it and so the songs on itunes are gone and i have only my ipod)

ive got excatly the same problem, my pod (also had it 3yrs 30gb 5th generation) has started making the clicking noise, i get the apple symbol appear or the sad looking face, im unable to restore it and i think the sad face may mean its a hardware problem from wot ive read on the online support. but i dont know what to do or where to send it to be fixed or if it can be fixed, if you find out how it can be fixed please let me know its doin me head in.
