Clicking on a viral email link has caused Safari to play up

I received a link from my aunt through email this morning.  Not realising that it must have been viral I clicked on the link.
It opened up in safari and since then I could not quit out of safari, and the option is greyed out.  I choose instead to reset safari which means I can now use it, however I cannot quit out of safari and every time I try and shut down, my imac now says that I cannot shut down due to it being open?!!!!  .
Please help, I am concerned I now have a virus.
I'm currently on Mountain Lion version 10.8.2, running safari 6.0.1
Thanks...

You do not have a virus.
When you open Safari, is it still loading the same page? If so, force-quit Safari (press command-option-esc, then choose Safari and click the Force Quit button). Then, hold down the shift key and open Safari again. This will prevent it from loading whatever sites were open when it quit.
If that doesn't help, let us know...

  • How can I stop firefox from opening hundreds of tabs when I click on an embedded email link?

Every time I forget and click on an embedded email link, firefox tries to open multiple tabs(sometimes hundreds). I can't shut down firefox when this happens, I can't do anything else. I have to manually shut down the computer and reboot.

Check to make sure that mailto has not been set to open Firefox.
To do that open the Preferences dialog by selecting "Firefox > Preferences". In the Preferences dialog go to the Applications panel. In the "Content Type" column locate mailto, and make sure the Action column is not set to "Use Firefox" This procedure is explained in more depth in the [[Managing file types]] article.

  • Google App has cause Safari to get corrupted.

I did not find this in any of the forums so here it goes. I installed the Google Application on my iPhone (original) and went to check my email. It brought up the login screen in safari and totally froze. Now I can only get to another page by going to another application such as mail and clicking on a URL. As soon as that URL comes up Safari goes back into frozen mode. Any way to reset the program???

Have you tried an iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so?
If so with no change, with Safari available, press and hold the Home button until your iPhone returns to the Home screen - this quits the application.
    Go to Settings > Safari.
Select Clear History, Clear Cookies, and Clear Cache.
Follow this by doing another iPhone reset.

  • When I click on a midi file link I am unable to play it, please what do I have to do to play these files?

When I click to play a particular file on the internet like midi files, a QuickTime window comes up but is unable to play them, if I download a midi file it will then open the windows media player to play it.

Other programs which *might* be able to play midi files include VLC media player.
Download it for free from http://videolan.org/vlc

  • Tip - delete any email address code in the Insert email link prior to use!

I have been using the email link for a while now. I know its not secure, but in certain cases it can be used - I think.
Today I found a strange problem.
I have a recordset with lots of email addresses in it which are shown on an encrypted password and userlevel  protected page.
The idea is to allow users with fully authorised access to the page to be able to email the other users by clicking on a link and opening their email client.
The email addresses are displayed as follows on the page:
    <td>Email address:</td>
               <td><?php echo htmlentities($row_clubedit['club_chair_email'], ENT_COMPAT, 'utf-8'); ?></td>
So after highlighting and copying  the php code, I click on the insert email link in the insert menu.
The insert panel comes up with some code  in the email link field without me paying any attention to it.
I paste my code into the text part of the link panel.
It comes up with the following code:
    <td><a href="mailto:<?php echo $row_joinupset['mail']; ?>"><?php echo htmlentities($row_clubedit['club_chair_email'], ENT_COMPAT, 'utf-8'); ?></a></td>
Note that thre are now two different recordsets in the email address. These recordsets do exist on the page, but I did not insert the  $row_joinupset['mail'] into the code - Dreamweaver did it.
Checking further, I find that earlier on the page I had created an email link by the same method using the joinupset recordset. The insert Email Link panel had not cleared the old email address from it's cache, so all the email adresses after the first one pointed to the same email address.
Because the page showed the correct email address, I did not notice until I tested my code, and found that every one called up the first email address.
I do not know if this is a bug in Dreamweaver, or why it happens, but it does.
Tip - delete any code in the email adress field of the insert panel prior to inserting the correct email address code.

I have gone though this process yesterday and worked for me.
I would suggest you to have following things handy before calling Apple
    1. Serial number of apple device which is associated with ur apple id
    2. At least one answer to your old security questions
    3. And you should be logged on to my account page of apple Id so that when customer care demands generation of 4 digit code you can do it.
This complete process is very simple but may take some time but apple guy was very helpful in my case.
Also remember the answers to the security questions are case sensitive.
    Good luck

  • EMail link in Safari

When I select an eMail link in a SAFARI window it defaults to .MAC mail and directs me to set up a .MAC mail account. I want SAFARI to default to my eMail account which is ENTOURAGE. I do not want a .MAC mail account. I have been unable to find out how to get SAFARI to default to ENTOURAGE. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks

    Helpful suggestions from Ken.
To supplement Ken's very helpful suggestions, you'll need to establish a Mail Account. In the initial drop down menu, select POP. Then go through the various screens. Where the installer asks for your providers info, just enter the "example" information. You'll probably get a prompt telling you "couldn't find server" or something to that effect. Doesn't matter. Select "continue".
Once established, you'll have access to the Preferences file>General where you can select your e-mail account.
Seems like this feature ought to be part of System Preferences, rather than Mail. You may want to send feedback to Apple about this situation.

I changed my mailto: to yahoo mail but now when I click an email link it has the mailto: and the subject both in the To: part of the email. I have to delete the incorrect data out. How can I fix this?

  • Email links when clicked causes Firefox to open many multiple tabs, unable to close any of them, in other words, crashes. Anyone else having this problem?

I cannot click on any email links on any pages. It causes Firefox to open many, many multiple tabs, which I cannot close. My only recourse is to quit Firefox and relaunch. It happens most of the time, so that in order to click an email link I must open another browser altogether.

You can look at the network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs on the about:config page.<br />
If network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs are user set (bold) then right-click and Reset them to the default value.<br />
You can open about: pages via the location bar like you open a website.

  • Why does firefox repeatedly send message stating reset link has been sent to email when it never is sent

I'm trying to log in to my account. Firefox says my password is invalid. Firefox also says it has sent a reset link to my email. That reset link never arrives although I repeatedly ask to sent the link, and Firefox repeatedly indicates that link has been successfully sent.

  • When I click on an email link it opens in the email window instead of opening a new window, how to get it to open a new window instead

It's Comcast email, most links are to articles from the Wall Street Journal. Lately an email from Charles Schwab broker with a link to a pdf file has been doing the same. When I click on the link, it opens within the email frame, which is about 1/3 filled up with the toolbar, mailboxes, headings etc. If it opens with 2 bars on the right side to move down, I can see the whole article, but often it opens with only one bar on the right side which will not let me get all the way to the end of the page.
It's been happening for several weeks. I got a new computer and it's still happening. Comcast sounds like they've never heard of it. Most recently happened today. I tried the same email link with IE and it opened a new window.

Firefox sent an email to me to confirm that I had asked the above question. The email had a link to click. When I clicked it from Firefox, nothing happened. Then I opened IE, signed into Comcast, opened the email, clicked the link, and it brought me here.

I did that like over a billon times and i am so desprate to talk with my friends. please please help this is really troubling me. i even tried to put in my apple id and still didn't work all it said check mail but i delete it. plz plz help

The message you go says that Apple sent to the email account you used an email to verify your email account. You have to open up that email message and then click on the link inside to complete verifying the email address.

The idea to jumpstart by change was not the smartest one, but gives you an opportunity to use that "temporary" account as permanent. You do not have a choice cause obviously despite you thinking that old account is no more -it does exist on Apple servers. And if you are unwilling to share your [email protected] with friend, just create one extra [email protected] for your friend. One suggestion - do not use gmail.

  • Why, when I click on an email link in a PDF document, does a new tab open?

I convert an excel spreadsheet to PDF. I click on the email link in the new document and it opens a new FF tab and two, not one, two MS outlook emails. Drives me nuts.

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • Why, when I click on an email link in Firefox 4, GMail hijacks my browser instead of opening Thunderbird??

Suddenly, anytime I click on an email link in Firefox 4, Gmail opens a popup window. This does not happen if I click an email link in IE 8.0 or Google Chrome. In Tools > Options > Applications, Thunderbird is set as my default in Firefox 4. If I go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options, Thunderbird is the default email client as well. Clearing cookies and settings did not resolve this problem. What is going on?
