Clicking on Mail message causes all text in window to vanish

I've searched for anyone reporting a similar issue and couldn't find anything, so my apologies if this has been reported elsewhere.
I'm having an intermittent issue where clicking on, for example, an attachment in a Mail message causes the contents of the message window to disappear (not the window, just its contents).  This happens whether the message is within a viewer window, or has been opened in a new window by double-clicking from the message list.  Clicking anywhere in the message (not just on attachments) causes this behavior.  Once it starts, quitting and restarting Mail is insufficient to stop this behavior - restart is required.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?

If I’ve understood it correctly, all you have to do is find a way to select the message and delete it without causing Mail to display its contents. Proceed as follows:
1. Launch Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
2. Go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled -- having this setting enabled is a really bad idea for spam-related security reasons anyway.
If you have the preview pane visible, Mail may still crash again as soon as you select the troublesome message. There are at least three ways to select the message so that you can delete it without Mail displaying the message contents:
3a. You can hide the preview pane by dragging the horizontal separator bar between the message list and the preview pane to the bottom of the window, or just double-click within the separator bar, so that the preview pane disappears and only the message list is visible. This would prevent Mail from trying to load the message when it is selected in the message list. To make the preview pane visible again, drag the horizontal separator bar up from the bottom of the window, or just double-click on it again.
3b. If you select the message with the mouse, the message is displayed in the preview pane when the mouse button is released, not when it’s pressed. This allows you to drag the message to the Trash or to any other mailbox without Mail trying to display its contents.
3c. Ctrl-clicking on a message causes a contextual menu to appear, from which you can usually (but not always, don’t ask me why) choose Delete or Move To, without the contents of the message being displayed in the preview pane.

Mail messages disappear - just a blank mail message for all emails.
This happens sporadically since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2.
It happens on all of my machines (Macbook Air, + iMacs) so it must be a software bug.
Is there an update coming through for Mail?

Back up all data. Rebuild the mailbox.

  • View mail messages as plain text by default in Mail (7.0)

It appears as if Apple removed this very useful feature.
I prefer to look at e-mail in plain text. It gets rid of ridiculous formatting choices and inline images and most importantly, web bugs. So I've always set my mail clients to disable any kind of formatting and display the messages in plain text.
I can't do that in Mavericks Mail.app, at least as far as I can tell.
    Bad choice, Apple.

Most mailers recognize plain text and html, and that's all they're expected to do. If you need a special feature like that you'll have to script it yourself.

  • Suddenly I consistently receive 3 or more "Cannot Get Mail" messages but all messages are received

I have over a dozen email accounts on my iPhone, a mix of godaddy, gmail... imap and pop. All of them were working fine, and then last week I started getting "Cannot Get Mail" messages, 2 or 3 back-to-back, every time mail is retrieved.
The thing is, I am receiving all messages from all mail accounts, despite these messages. So I have no way of knowing which service they are a result of. I have gone into settings to each account and resaved it, to see if the validation would fail on any, but all are fine.

    Have checked them online

  • Mail messages open in small, truncated window . . .

I'm running OSX 10.8 on a MacBook Pro Retina. When I click on a Mail message on the list, it opens in a small truncated window at the bottom of my screen. I have to move and resize virtually every piece of email to read it. Is there a fix? Thank you!

I am having a similar issue on my MacBook Air.  On occassion, a mail message will open at about 1/3 of normal size in the bottom left corner of the screen.  It is not consistent, and there doesn't appear to be any pattern to the type of email that causes this.  It happens with both of my email accounts.
The only 2 solutions I've found:
    1) Resize the window which will sometimes correct the problem, but it generally reoccurs shortly thereafter.
    2) Close and reopen Mail.
    Any permanent solutions?

  • All text in Finder has vanished

    Hi,
My father-in-law is having problems with his G5 running Tiger; all of the text seems to have vanished from the Finder. The names are missing from his login window, and he can't see what he's typing, but he can log in. All the icons are on his desktop but without names.
I've suggested reinstalling the system software. Any suggestions for a less involved solution? It's hard for him to run any applications given that he can't read anything...
    Any help is appreciated!

Still no joy-- text was still missing in Safe Boot mode. Also, it's not confined to his user account: he logged into the Admin account on his machine and observed the same problem. When he did so it seems like Disk Utility popped up and was giving him alerts-- with no text in any of the boxes or buttons, it was hard to figure out what was going on. Even harder to do all of this diagnosing over the phone.
I've sent him off looking for his Tiger install disk, which he has not been able to locate (you'd know why if you saw his computer room-- anyone else have an in-law like that?). The problem seems to extend beyond a corrupted font; his menus drop all the way down to the bottom of the screen, and are completely blank. I've not encountered anything like this before.
    Thanks for all your help!

  • I just brought iMac OS x version 10.7,  when I try to run Scottrader Streaming quotes, it constantly locks and causes all the other windows frozen. please tell me what should I do, it looks like Apple iMac platform is not good for online trading. thanks

I recently brought a iMac OS X version 10.7 PC, when I try to run Scott Trader real time streaming quotes, it contantly *****, and causes all other widowns frozen, please help me to resolve this problem, or i have to give up this PC and return it to the store....
    thanks

I use e-trade and a couple of times, years back, I found them behind the Java updates.
So, now I install new Java platforms on my backup disk and test the streaming data on that first because I know it will be over-written that evening with my nightly backup.
Of course, since I began doing that there hasn't been a problem. Do the same with printer driver updates.
Anyway, call ScottTrade and howl! Tell them how many Macs are out there and why aren't they in Apple Developers Program?

  • Append a mail message to a text or Filemaker file

Hi I'd like to use Mail's rules to activate an applescript to copy the body of an email (including senders name) and append it to an existing text file (or better yet a filemaker database). Any ideas where to start with this?
    I've tried
save contents of window in "/Users/john/Desktop/test.txt"
    but not much happens
Basically would like each new email to append to end of the file.
    cheers

Your script is too simplistic to do anything - you need to be far more explicit. For example, given the line:
save contents of window in "/Users/john/Desktop/test.txt"
you don't say which window. You also don't use a valid file reference (you just use a text string that looks like a file path, but only to you and I (AppleScript isn't that smart).
So let's step back a bit.
Since you're writing this as a mail rule it doesn't make any sense to use any window reference at all - the rule is run as the message comes in, and before it ever gets displayed in a window. Fortunately Mail.app will pass in a reference to the message(s) so you can use that to determine the message contents.
You also have to bear in mind that there may be more than one message, so you have to have a loop that iterates through the messages.
To make life a little easier, all Mail.app rules will follow the same basic form:
    on performmailaction(theData)
      tell application “Mail”
set theSelectedMessages to |SelectedMessages| of theData
-- now theSelectedMessages contains the messages to be processed, so iterate through them:
        repeat with eachMessage in theSelectedMessages
-- code here to deal with the message
        end repeat
      end tell
    end performmailaction
Now, inside the repeat loop you have a reference to an incoming message to process.
As for saving the content of the message, you can't do this with the save command. You need to use AppleScript file access commands, like:
set theText to content of eachMessage
set theFile to open for access file (path to desktop as text & message.txt") with write permission
    write theText to theFile
    close access theFile
Of course, if there are multiple messages you may need to work out some logic to avoid overwriting the same file.

  • Mail messages stripped of text when received by others

I have been having problems with Apple mail for about a year now.  On occasion I have been called by my boss informing me that I have sent out emails with just attachments and no message.  Problem is, I sent a message with the email but the text was stripped for some reason.  I have the program set to bcc a message to myself so that I can see what I am sending out and can retreive it from the server if anything goes wrong.  These messages are fine.
Is mail encoding the message so that it is unreadable by Entourage or Outlook?  That is the program that at least one of the recipients is using.
Does anyone know what could be going on?

Sort of. Outlook is a crappy email client unless it is sending and receiving to/from itself. It even has trouble with Microsoft's own products like Entourage, Outlook for Mac and Outlook Express (Windows version).
Depending on the version of Outlook and the Exchange server that is hosting it, various problems will occur.
If you are sending to a known bad version, use Plain text and set the attachments to always at end.  Another thing noted as helpful is setting the attachment to view as icon (right-click on it and choose view as icon).
Changing the font at the beginning of the message is known to work sometimes. Recently, some people have found that adding an empty plain text document as an attachment helps with some versions of Outlook.
Despite that fact that Outlook does not conform to email standards, Apple has tried to keep up with the various idiosyncrasies in Outlook, but Microsoft tends to stay one step ahead with new bugs.

  • Why does embedding Adobe fonts in EPUB cause all text to display as oblique?

I have been having this problem for a while now to various degrees, and I stopped using InDesign to build and export EPUB files for a long time because of it. Lately I have decided to try reintroducing InDesign into my EPUB workflow. However, I have found that whenever I try to export an EPUB 2 file from InDesign CC 2014.1 while embedding Adobe fonts, all the text in the EPUB displays as oblique when I open the resulting file in Sigil or Calibre. Removing and then re-adding the fonts with no obfuscation does not correct the issue. Not embedding the fonts during export -- or removing them from the EPUB entirely -- eliminates the display problem, but obviously I can't expect people to have these fonts installed on their computers.
I do believe most Adobe font licenses allow for embedding, so I don't think this is a security issue. For the sake of this discussion the issue I am having is with Arno Pro OTF (Regular, Italic, Bold).
I can't find anything about this on the web. Can anyone help me with this issue, or has anyone else experienced this at least?
    Thanks!
    Allen

Here's another piece of information to add to the puzzle. The first screenshot is from Calibre on an PC with Windows 8.1 (using Google Chrome as default search engine). The second is from Calibre on a Mac with Yosemite 10.10.1 (using Safari 8.0.2 as default search engine). Both with the same ePub file created on CC2014 on the Mac using Arno Pro for the Latin text, Adobe Song for Chinese, and Deja Vu Sans for the Hexagram

  • Highlight text tool causes all text to disappear on saving.  HELP!

I have lost HOURS of work.  I highlighted a document, as I have for years, but on saving it, ALL of the text has completely disappeared.  The document is now a bunch of yellow boxes - that's it.  What is going wrong all of a sudden???????

    Good day!
One sometimes surprisingly efficient trouble-shooting routine is trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed.

  • Why does 1 speaker crack when i click on different items (not all) after hp/windows updates?

After installing several updates for Windows 7 & HP g72010nr at the same time, 2 problems have occured. 1 speaker cracks real loud when I click on different items (not everything) AND when running DVDs there are ripples all throught the movies. It's been about a month or more & I don't remember which updates they were since this is a new computer, I've had so many of them. Any quick fixes? Thanks in advance.

Cool! If you dont have it already you can download Microsoft Security Essentials, which I use on my personal computer. There are TONS of virus scanners out there but I find this one to work well for me. Here is where you can get it if your interested: http://goo.gl/XF4L1

  • All Mail messages remain bold

New iPad mini-mail messages are all bold. I tried the Edit button but the only options are Flag or mark as unread. It's as if it thinks the messages are read but ALL messages look the same, all with bold headings.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the iPad shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the iPad back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • Mail messages open in new window

Recently when a notification comes in for Mail, if I click on the banner notification or the notication in Notification Centre, the new mail message opens in a new window instead of just going to the mail app and showing me the message there.
As far as I am aware I have not changed any settings. Could anyone help me change this back please?
    Many thanks.

Don't forget to turn off banner notification for Mail in System Preferences!
