Clicking on router in Win7 My Computer Network killed internet until router hard reset!

I blogged about a really odd bug I found in either Win7 and or the verizon fios router, check it out...
http://gregfricke.wordpress.com/2009/12/03/how-windows-7-killed-my-verizon-fios-router/
In a nutshell, double clicking on the router in the network area in my computer, killed the broadband pipe on the router until I hard reset the router.
The verizon rep said this was news to him and he escalated it internally but I wanted to throw it out there for anyone that runs into this

I have an Actiontec router, I tried what you did and got somewhat different results:
1) When I look at my network in Windows 7 I see "Wireless Broadband Router" not "Actiontec ...." Strange. But a right-click on the icon and selecting Properties does show the device as an Actionte.
2) The first time I double-clicked on the router icon, nothing happened, I still had internet connectivity.
3) When I double-clicked on the router icon a second time, I did lose internet connectivity as you did.
4) When I logged into the router it clearly said the WAN was disconnected, same as you.
5) I did a reboot of the router from within the router dialog. When it finished rebooting the WAN showed "connecting". After waiting a few minutes it showed "connected" and all worked normally. No hard reset required
That is strange that it does disable the WAN. But again I was able to get it back with just a reboot. I am one of the original FiOS internet users, I still have a PPPoE connection and my WAN is Ethernet not coax so that might explain the difference, I don't know.
But yeah, Verizon needs to fix that.

  • Computer - computer network and internet sharing

I apologise if this has been discussed elsewhere - please point me to any useful links.
I have a G4 iMac and iBook (running 10.4.6) both with airport extreme cards installed. I would like to use a computer to computer connection for file / printer sharign and most importantly to share the ethernet connection to the internet running through my iMac.
I would be extremely grateful if someone could point out how to do this and incorporate a practicable level of security (I don't want any of the hundreds of people in adjacent flats downloading lord knows what through my connection).
Having accomplished this, I then need to be able to create a similar connection when required so that when required I can share the internet connection from the iMac with our PC laptop running Windows XP service pack 2.
So, the simpler the better, instructions for creating a computer - computer network for internet and file sharing between two Macs and following that between the Mac with the internet connection and a Windows laptop.
Thank you very much in advance.
    G4 iMac USB 2.0 / G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You don't need to setup up computer to computer connection if your using internet sharing. Once you start internet sharing then your 2 computers are connected togther.

The problem you have is that if you enable internet sharing on one of your macs to share its connection over airport then the only level of security you can enable is WEP encryption.
The problem with WEP encryption is that it offers no real security and can easily be cracked. WPA is the only security you should consider using and unfortunately OSX does not have WPA encryption functionality when using the built in internet sharing function.
Your best solution is to get a wireless router that has a SPI firewall an WPA encryption. Depending on what your current internet connection is and how it is provided would determine the best kind of router to get.

I had "do not disturb" on in England. I did take it off airplane mode periodically, but I never actually used the network.  I stuck to local wifi to do brousing and a bit of messaging.  It periodically told me I was on an English network, but I didn't actually use it.  And I had data roaming shut off all together.
when I try to restore, I get this message:
Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable.  Try connecting your iPhone to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple of minutes.  If this problem persists, contact Apple Support at apple.com/support.

  • Go and use my phone and in the top left hand corner it says no service. i have tried restoring the pone, resetting the network settings and also a hard reset as well.

I have an iphone 5s and updated it to the new 7.1 software. A day later I go and use my phone and in the top left hand corner it says no service. i have tried restoring the pone, resetting the network settings and also a hard reset as well. It gains service for a short amount of time but then it loses service. Everyone else on my plan has service and their phones are completely normal but they never did the update... what can i do to fix this problem?

Backup and restore your software via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a NEW device. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file, or maybe it's one of your apps causing the trouble. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • Adding a password to a computer to computer network?

I have made a computer to computer network with internet sharing through air port so I can share my airport between my computers and my ipod touch but I did not add a password to the connection. How can I now go and add a password to that connection so it is secured?

Unfortunately the only type of wireless security that internet sharing supports is WEP encryption. To enable a WEP password goto System Preferences-->sharing.
Then select the port you wish to share from such as 'Share your connection from EN0 to computers using Airport. Then click on the Airport Options Button then you can enable encryption using WEP and set a password.

  • Can I use Airport for a computer to computer network AND my wireless router

    ...at the same time?
I've got a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro which I can happily connect together to share files or do screen sharing via a computer to computer airport network, or I can also switch (via Finder's airport menu) to my router's wireless network to access t'internet.
But, is it possible to NOT have to switch this over? I'd like to be able to share both computers' files AND be online at the same time. I'm hoping that the airport network can access the other Mac AND the wireless router simultaneously.
I'm guessing I couldn't use internet sharing on one of the computers because BOTH of them need to be switched to the ad-hoc computer to computer network.
I apologise if this question has been asked in the forums before, but it's impossible to do a meaningful search with keywords "airport" "internet" "computer to computer network" - those words cover pretty much every network-related post!

Airport can only connect to one wireless interface at a time...
However you are going about things the wrong way, what you want is a LAN... and that is exactly what your router provides, connect both computers to the router and then initiate file sharing and other local protocols.
If it does not work you will have to configure your router to enable devices to communicate with each other.
To do so you enter the *router's IP address* into your web browser's address bar, you can find this under *system preferences> network> airport>*
    i.e. some common router private addresses: 192.168.1.254, 192.168.0.1, 10.0.1.10
This will display the router's web interface, you will need to refer to your router's documentation to find out how to configure it, but many are self explanatory or provide on page help. What most "user friendly" routers call it is "device isolation" or something similar, - this needs to be disabled (to allow all clients to communicate with each other).

HP Laserjet 1022nw running with Win7 64 computer printing multiple copies - won't stop until you shut off.  It resumes printing when you turn the 1022nw  back on
    Have renistalled Driver
It worked fine with Vista and XP

    Hello @Astronav,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the issue of  multiple pages continuously printing from your Windows 7 computer to your HP LaserJet 1022nw Printer. However, in order for me to provide you with accurate support I do need to know how your printer is connected to your Windows 7 computer.
Normally the continuous printing issues are caused by your router. When you send the print command to your printer from your computer than the print command goes from your computer to your router and finally to the printer. If there is a conflict with your router it may constantly send the signal to the printer to 'print' a job. Or, if the printed text is garbled information and weird symbols that your printer is printing it could be commands from the router to your computer that are improperly being sent to your printer and resulting in a page of weird symbols printing.
Therefore, it is very important for me to know how your printer is connected to your computer as that will guide us in the what direction we need to be troubleshooting.
Once I find out how your printer is connected to your computer I will be able to provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to resolve this continuous print issue. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Trouble setting up 3 computer network

    Hi All,
I just purchased A Linksys WRT54G V6.0. I currently have 2 desktop computers hardwired to the router and a laptop connected wirelessly. My problem is that while all 3 can connect to the internet fine, only computer A can connect to the other 2 computers. Let me elaborate. Assume the desktop systems are computers A and B and the laptop is C. When hardwired all three get along fine and files can be shared perfectly. When I disconnect the laptop (C) and rely on the wireless connection, the trouble starts.
    A sees both B and C
    B sees only A
    C sees only A.
All three still connect to the net fine.
Computer A runs XP Pro, B runs XP home and C runs XP Media Edition.
Computers A and B were hardwired through a wired router for the past 2 years with no issues. Computer C was recently acquired and the need was felt for a wireless connection for the laptop.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

Do you have "File and Printer Sharing" set up for your wireless adapter?
On your laptop computer, in Windows, go to:
Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections
Then right click on your wireless card and select "Properties"
On the "General" tab, look for "This connection uses the following items:"
Make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" has a check in the box.  You may also need to check "Client for Microsoft Networks", but I am uncertain about that.  Then click on "OK".  Reboot the computer.  Then test again.
Let me know if this helped or not.

  • How to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?

how to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?  My home computer is a Window 8 OS.  Thx.

The easiest way, and it may work from scratch, is to share the folders/drives you want access to on your pc, noticing what are the default parameters (eg "workgroup" etc.).
Then, you can connect your mac directly by ethernet, for instance, and, in Finder, go to > Network, you should see the folders/drives. You may be asked to provide user/password.
Don't get confused by regular/crossed ethernet cable, as mac can cross by software, so a regular cable will be ok.
Anyway, either you isd modem has the ability to connect several devices (multiple ethernet sockets, or wifi), or you can buy a router, which isn't expansive.

  • IChat audio/video not working: bonjour over computer-to-computer network

My girlfriend has a brand new MacBook Pro 15". I have a 3 year old PowerBook. Both running 10.4.9 and iChat 3.1.8. We are currently sitting right next to each other, and yet have been unable to connect to an audio or video chat by any method.
To completely eliminate the router from the equation I created a computer to computer network which she joined. Both of us have our firewalls off, and both of us have our Quicktime streaming speed set to 1.5Mbps. We tried to create an audio connection over Bonjour. I got an error -7 and she got an error -8.
There are many threads reporting the same error, but most of the solutions involve changing router settings. I figured that since this is on a computer-to-computer connection there is no router involved. It would be nice to be able to get this working over the general internet, but I figure if it doesn't work in this very limited setting it will never work. Any help? Much appreciated.

Yep - did that on both computers, to no avail:
Here's the first section of the error messages from both computers. (I can post more if it's helpful.)

  • Is it possible to save a Computer-to-Computer Network?

I might be overlooking something obvious, but I do not see a way to save a "computer-to-computer" network.
For instance, here is what happens:
I create a new "Airport" network on a macbook pro to sync with my iPhone. works great. But when I restart the macbook, the network does not appear in the list.
From here, I check the network settings. AirPort is "On", signal is strong, but no Network is selected. Furthermore, in the dropdown box, my network is not shown in the list.
So my only option is to start all over and re-create the network. Certainly there is a way to save the computer-to-computer network and keep it available after restarting my computer?

After you create it, click on Locations and choose edit Locations, then the + symbol and give the newly added location a name, then click Done.
Next time you login, you will be able to select that setup from the  menu item, Location.

  • "Device" with my SSID showing up in WiFi Menu as computer to computer network

    OK guys this is weird...
A few weeks ago a noticed my SSID showing up unprotected under "device" in my wifi menu across all my ios devices. It shows up as protected in the list of all the networks in my neighborhood, but not under "device". Out of curiosity, I connected to it, and realized it was a computer to computer network. The problem is that I didn't create this network. It just showed up. I do not have internet sharing turned on. The only time it goes away is when I connect to my wireless network. When I switch back to Ethernet, it shows up again. I thought it would be as simple as deleting the network, but it doesn't show up anywhere else. I've tried formatting my hard drive. Still there. I've tried unplugging my router. Still there. I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of this thing, and it just wont go away. This has me slightly concerned.  Any help would be appreciated.

    William,
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure which device it is, if any. It just displays my SSID. One secure, one not. I did not create this network, and I do not have hotspot turned on to my knowledge. I do have all my devices logged in to iCloud so I can message and call on my devices, but I wouldn't think that would automatically create an ad-hoc. I never saw it before last week. I attached a screenshot. Thanks for your help.

  • Setting up computer to computer network caused wifi to stop working

    Hi,
I set up a tether using the FlashArmy App with my Iphone 4S and Macbook Pro.  I created the computer to computer network and all worked well.  However, now I can't return to my wireless network.  It sees the network SSID but won't obtain the IP Address.  Any thoughts?  Also, when using the Assistant, it will bring up the SSID but when I enter the correct password, it indicates the password is incorrect.

Simply turning the router off, waiting 5 minutes, then turning it back on solved this mystery.  I had to restart the Macbook Pro as well but all is back to normal.
