Clicking on TM icon in top bar shows "Latest Backup: ---"

I have setup TM to backup only on demand and I usually take a backup every few days.
Now, when the backup completes, it shows "Latest Backup: ---". This has been going for months. I have all the latest software updates.
Thanks,
Richard

Cool! And thanks for the star.
I don't backup every hour because it was causing too many problems. I backup to a partition on an external 1TB USB drive and for some reason, between TM and the machine going to sleep after 30 minute of inactivity, the drive would be hung almost every time I would wake up the machine! I gave up and set TM to on-demand.
Try un-checking the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ option in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
Or try the drive maker's web site; some have ways to disable their internal sleep or "spin down" modes; others have posted firmware and/or driver updates that might fix it.
The problem with "on demand" is, if you're anything like me, you'll realize you forgot just after deleting the wrong thing!

iPhoto will not open with pictures when I click on the icon.  It does show that it is open on top toolbar. What happened to my photos?

Did you run any updaters recently, i.e. like just before this happened?  Try this first fix: make a duplicate copy of the library and try the following:
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences..

  • Stuck with HomeSync icon in top bar

    Hi,
I have Snow Leopard 10.6.2 connected to Active Directory in my company. There were home sync feature enabled in active directory, but now it is disabled by AD administrator.
Now I am stuck with homeSync icon (http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5287/screenshotqj.png) in my top bar and I can't disable it, since I can't get into homeSync preferences from system preferences gui.
I guess I can edit it manualy going into ~/Library/Preferences, but I don't know where I can find setting I am looking for (enabling/disabling homeSync icon in top bar).
Does anyone know where it is?

command+drag the icon off the menu bar.

The icons on the top bar on my Mid 2010 MBP (OSX 10.10.3) keeps disappearing for no apparent reason. I don't believe it is having any effect on my MBP's Performance, but it is just very annoying.

  • Time Machine showing latest backup.

Time Machine is showing my latest backup (Today) in the TM Browser, but then no backups until May. I know I have backed up since then. Backup drive is on the Network and mounts. There are also to two sparsebundle files on the backup drive. Am wondering how to get backups made in August, July and June etc to display in the "Star Wars" window?
    TIA.

    Antony Platt wrote:
Ok! so the missing backups are indeed in the "other" sparsebundle which i was able to browse and mount in the TM Browser window.
Ah, great!   Not sure how or why that happened.  Time Machine should only make a new sparsebundle for a new Mac (or if the logic board is replaced).
Just to be sure which is which, when you go into TM normally, via Enter Time Machine, do you see recent backups?  Or are recent backups in the one you have to use the Browse... option for?
I guess now the question is if i should try and "reconnecd" or merge them so evreything is referenced thru one sparsbundle?
No, that can't be done.  Everything is linked together in an intricate structure that can't be altered from outside.  See the tan box in How Time Machine works its Magic for an explanation.
If TM is now backing-up to the set you see when you Enter Time Machine, you can continue viewing the old set via the Browse... option, and restore via the Restore To... option (#16 in the FAQ).  Once those are no longer needed, you can just delete the sparsebundle (TM won't delete backups from a sparse bundle it isn't backing up to).

  • Trouble clicking on link icons at top of page under the task bar

    Hi,
Two weeks ago my system automatically updated to Fx7 and it caused so many problems with my computer that I deleted it and d/l'ed Fx5 and this seemed to remedy the majority of my problems. Ever since then I have had so many problems which weren't there before Fx7 and feel that I shouldn't have to deal with all these problems and try to resolve them considering it was Fx7 that caused them in the first place.
However, I have noticed that when I'm on Facebook now and wish to click on a game link in the top right hand corner of the page, I can no longer do this. Also if I want to search for something in the Facebook search bar, I can't click on that either. This is most frustrating as I was able to do this before and I'm tearing my hair out wondering what has gone wrong.
Also, I have found out that your program no longer accepts the Google toolbar with Version 5 and others after 5 and wonder why? This is also most annoying as I used it all the time. What I would like to know is; when you enter text into the main Yahoo opening page, does it normally jump to the left side of the page when it brings up replies or information?
These are just a couple of the problems I have experienced but have fixed up a couple of the previous ones.
I certainly would appreciate some help on these issues as I'm not technically minded and am sure I will foul everything up even worse if I try by myself. A real human being who can give me some insights as to what I should do would be a real blessing.
Many thanks for a quick reply.
    Pat

  • Genius Icon in Top Bar

I just upgraded to iTunes 8.0.1.11 and I noticed that upon starting it, Genius ran again (presumably to get info from new music I've added since I last ran genius) and then after that I noticed what I think is a new genius icon appear in the top information bar.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows what this new genius icon does?
When I click on the genius icon, it disappears and so does the "select current track" button (left pointing spiral arrow) until I play the song again.

Well then, at some point genius was turned on, then. That's what iTunes creates to store the Genius stuff.
Don't know how much time you want to spend on this, but there are absolutely NO Apple support articles on Genius that I can find....
But if it were my PC, I'd
    turn off Genius in iTunes,
    closeiTunes,
delete those Genius and Extras ITL files,
re-open iTunes and start Genius again.
That might fix it, but we're flying blind here. An iTunes repair from Control Panel > Add/Remove programs might also fix it.
For goodness' sakes *don't delete* your iTunes Library.itl file. That holds your ratings and playcounts. Just delete the Genius & Extras files.

  • Sim icon in menu bar showing "No SIM" in menu on MPB. How to remove?

In my menu bar I've got a strange icon showing simcard with exclamation mark. When I click it, it shows tiny menu with "No SIM".
I don't know where it came from and how to get rid of it.
I've removed old mobile phones with modems from list of my bluetooth devices, and removed all mobiles in Networking preferences.
I don't have any peripherals connected that could use SIM. I never had any mobile broadband modems and don't recall installing such software.
Where this icon comes from and how can I get rid of it?

I can't tell you where it comes from, but in general you can remove icons from the right part of the menu bar by holding a "command" key down while you drag the icon down out of the menu bar.

  • Can't see apple script icon in top bar

Even though I have moved scripts into the library/itunes/ folder - I still cannot see the script icon.
Does this have anything to do with my iBook G3?
    Thanks -

The correct path for iTunes scripts is:
To make them available for all users:
    ./Library/iTunes/Scripts
    For single user:
    ./Users/YourUsername/Library/iTunes/Scripts
If the subfolder 'Scripts' does not exist, you have to create it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine HD not showing latest backup, can't restore system

Please forgive the short story, but I'll give as many details as I can:
Last night I successfully installed XP on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. I decided to do the same to my iMac (21.5" 2010 Version). I used Boot Camp to initiate the partition process to create my Windows partition. It told me that I had files that couldn't be moved and I would have to:
    1. Backup my startup disk (the main and only internal hard drive)
    2. Reformat the hard drive I want to create the Windows partition on
    3. Restore from the backup
    4. Use Boot Camp to create the new partition
I completely understand why I have to do this. There's files spread physically all over the drive, and backing up and restoring is the free alternative to defragging. So I use Time Machine to back up my internal drive to an external drive. The total transfer was about 330 GB. I had to leave for about three hours and left it to do its thing. When I came back, the iMac had restarted and was waiting for my password to log on. I did so and looked in Time Machine and saw that the next back was scheduled for 10:37 pm. It was set to backup every hour. Simple math tells me the last backup - the one I had left for three hours - had finished at 9:37 pm. And that made perfect sense.
I then boot the iMac from the OSX disk and use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the main drive. I did this without any qualms since I was sure the backup worked. It wiped and reformatted my drive and I go to Time Machine to restore and.......
    NO BACKUP FILES ARE FOUND
The external was spinning. I could hear it doing something. So I decided to try it manually in Disk Utility. In selecting the source of the restore Image, I navigate through the external and find, not a backup file, but a ".inProgress" file. I'm guessing that the initial backup +did not+ complete correctly and I've now just lost all of my data.
Can anyone please tell me that I'm wrong?

    weerez87 wrote:

Unless you have your Mac set to automatically log you off after a period of inactivity, your Mac should have been as you left it. It does not shut down, restart, or log you off after completing a backup.
Could there have been a power failure?
I'm guessing that the initial backup +did not+ complete
    That seems likely.
and I've now just lost all of my data.
    Maybe, maybe not.
Just to be sure, check the backup drive via the Finder. Be +*very careful+* using the Finder on your backups; if you accidentally move, change, or delete anything, they can be corrupted.
There should be a single Backups.backupdb folder at the top level, containing a single folder named for your Mac.
Inside that should be a folder for each backup, named with the date and time; plus a "latest" alias, plus the in.Progress file (it's actually a "package").
If there are any named, dated folders, those are completed backups; you can restore your entire system from them. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If not, select the "in.Progress" file and see how large it is, via +Get Info.+ That may take a while; the larger it is, the more of your data is there. If it's over about 6 GB (your system folders), right-click it and select +Show Package Contents.+ It should contain the same folder structure as your internal HD; go all the way to the bottom and see how much is actually there (some of the items toward the end may be empty).
If it looks like most everything is there, you may be able to recover most of it, by drag and drop.
If not, +*stop using your internal HD.+* Unless you did a +Secure Erase,+ your stuff is still on the internal disk, and most should be recoverable, but it won't be quick or easy. See [Data Recovery|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Recover.html].
    Keep us posted.
