Clicking sound and MBP does not boot

Two months ago, I upgraded to a MacBook Pro, which today suddenly failed to start. When it happened, I had woken it from sleep and started up EyeTV through its USB-powered antenna. The programme started up normally then the screen froze and the spinning ball appeared. I had to switch off the computer by pressing the main switch for 10 seconds, but when I switched it on again I only could see the grey screen. Suddenly, a light, repeated but irregular clicking sound was clearly audible under the left hand back side below the screen. I found a picture of an opened MBP on the web and it seems that this is not the location of the hard disk but there is no way to start up the computer again, not even from a CD. I cannot fathom why this happened since I never had a similar problem but I am worried that the Eye TV antenna, which has a magnetic foot, might have been too close to the computer, and has altered something inside the machine. As I am currently not close to a Genius help area or even in a country with easy access to an Apple Help Desk, any idea on how to solve this is welcome. Thanks!

Hi,
That sounds very encouraging. I was once able to get it into target disk mode as well, but I can't remember whether it was with the startup DVD in it or not. With the startup disk I can do all the technical check stuff, except anything that requires me to use the HD, which the MBP does not recognize anymore. Can you describe more in detail what steps you took to get it into target disk mode, I mean sequence of events: first connect the two MBPs by Firewire, then start the second MBP, then the first one in Target Mode by holding T when starting up - or in another sequence?
I still believe that something substantial must be wrong with the machine and will give it into repair even I can manage to start it, but it would be divine if I could simply get my data off the HD. Please let me know if your surface scan surfaces anything.
Just out of interest, what does "to send me a box for a repair" mean? In Europe, we have to bring the machine back to the Apple shop in person...
Thanks, Alex

Anyone has been having this problem?

I have the same issue, bteween France and The Netherlands. No solution found yet.
Worse even. My credit card is not from The Netherlands, and the dutch store does not accept a creditcard from outside NL. So i used my french card to buy one app using France has my home country. Luckily the app's language remained English, but now the french store seems to be offering me frech versions of existing (free) apps which i dont want. So i cant use the updates.
i cant change the country back to Neterlands, without using a credit card. I can make a new ID, but the old one remains stuck with the french store, pffff It seems the only solution is to create a new ID via a "purchase" of a free app, but the older free apps all may need to be reinstalled that way.

I may regret having purchased this ipad.....

  • MBP does not boot from a USB external hard disk (backup disk)

My MBP does not manage to boot from an external 1Tb LaCie desktop hard disk (USB 2.0) where I cloned my startup internal hard disk with SuperDuper! (I tried CCC too). Unfortunately, this is exactly the external hard drive I bought to clone my startup disk and I desperately need to have it bootable at startup.
As a matter of fact I cannot see anything at startup (option key pressed or not) without disconnecting it from the USB port. Just it seems that the system hangs up if I keep the drive connected at boot time!!!
    Please, advice.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adolfo

    Hi, thanks for the input.
I produced recovery media with the built in recovery media creator, and with ATI Home 2013. This was in the form of a usb flash drive for both types, and a cd as well in the case of ATI2013.
In all three cases when booting up with any of these media inserted, the boot hangs almost immediately and the Num Lock led lights and that's it.
I have set the boot sequence to
    USB
    CD
    HDD,
Disabled Secure Boot in bios and switched off Fast Start in Power Options.
F12 does allow me to enter bios and change whatever settings I want.
This coupled with the fact that the option to go into recovery console has disappeared during the boot sequence leads me to think it is summat to do with the laptop settings rather than the assorted recovery media I have created.
Thanks again for coming back to me.

  • MBP Does Not Boot.

After attempting to install Leopard on my MBP, it told me i could not complete the installation because on an error (i have no idea what). So i restarted the machine and tried to do it again. The icon representing my Macintosh HD had a /!\ triangular symbol over it, and i could not perform the installation. I thought, oh well i'll continue with Tiger and back up all my things then try again later, only to find that when i restarted my machine that after the grey screen with the apple comes up and the swirly, the screen goes black and it stayed that way for a while.. i wondered what was wrong. i held the power button in til it restarted again but when it did it made a very nasty loud BEEP!
every time i turn it on it goes no further than blackness after the apple screen. the reason for the black screen is because the mac is switched off. very strange. If i insert either my leopard boot disc, or my tiger boot disc and hold the C button it will load them up. After researching another topic, i have ran the disk utility whilst in the tiger boot disc (because i do not want to lose all my files). My HD is "verified", and when i click on Repair Disk, every time it displays these details:
Verify and Repair disk "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure.
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempt on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
then a pop up message displays to me:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
all i can ask is... any help????

Right now you have hard drive issues. Probably directory problems. Whether or not your hard drive can be repaired and boot from Tiger again is another issue. Hopefully you backed up all your files prior to the attempt to install Leopard. You have some options:
    1. In as much as the Tiger install disk can't repair the disk you might try DiskWarrior. No guarantee.
    2. Do an Erase & Install with your Leopard installer disk. (As I mentioned, hopefully you are backed up). You could try using another Mac and connect both using firewire cables and boot your Mac into target disk mode. If your hard drive shows up on the desktop of the other Mac you may be able to get your files that way.

    Hi Support,
I have recently purchased BlackBerry Z3.

In Vibrate Mode, it does only vibrate.
This is the first time I am using Blackberry and I am annoyed with the basic feature not working.

  • My MBP does not boot in the operating system. How can I get it to work again?

I've tried rebooting from the OS DVD but it does not do anything. Now, I can't even get the DVD out to try the MBP install disks. Is there anyway to get this working again?

If it's not an Airprint enabled printer, you can not natively through your iPad.  BUT, there are apps you can purchase in the App Store, like Print Central ($9), which is what I use myself and works well for my needs.

    Hello
    Sounds like a hardware issue...
You could try to remove the battery and AC/DC adaptor. Wait one hour and then connect both devices again.
If it doesnt work you need professional help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and tell you what part must be replaced.
Here you can find your local ASP:

  • MBP does not boot - no startup chime

    Hey folks,
a couple of days ago my MBP (2.16 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 250GB HD, OSX 10.4.11) crashed. The screen froze and I turned it off using the power on/off button. Since then (at least that's when I realized it) it won't turn on any more when it's "hot". When I press the power on button the optical drive spins, fans turn on but the screen stays black and I can't hear the startup chime. No reactions at all - can't use keyboard shortcuts,.... - only chance is to turn it off again with the power button.
If I let it cool down for a couple of hours or use an external fan for this it starts up just if there wasn't anything at all.
    Already repaired permissions, reset PRAM,...
To be a bit more precise what "hot" means: when I check istat pro or something and the CPU is over 40°C /105°F it won't turn on any more.
Has anyone of you experienced similar things?
    I appreciate your help.

    Hi!
I am in love with this MacBook Pro...
But for the last two weeks, starts to get frozen on a random. Then when trying to turn it on, nothing happens (just a tinny noice coming from the board). I went throught Apple Support website and I ended by reseting the Apple portable's System Manager Controler (SMC) which means removing adapter cord and battery, then holding the start button for 5 secs and then releasing it. Then I tryied again to start it up and worked fine. By now it still shuts down time to time but immediatly starts up again itself. Weird, isn't!
Thought has to be something with the termal sensors and the SMC perhaps!
    Any suggestions?

  • New MBP i5 does not boot after hard disk swap

    Hi there,
I received my new i5 MBP today. After booting it once with the installed HDD to check if it's ok, I exchanged the hard disk for the one in my Late 2008 Macbook Pro. After doing this, my Late 2008 Macbook Pro boots fine with the (new) hard disk from the new i5 MBP, but the i5 MBP does not boot with my old hard disk.
    To give you some details:
    - I have installed 10.6.3 on the (old) hard disk that's not booting.
    - The i5 MBP boots fine from the installation DVD
    - Disk utility finds and can read my hard disk, no errors
    - PRAM NVRAM reset did not help
    - when booting in safe mode, I can see the system stop booting after or while loading Extensions.mkext
My guess is, it tries to boot and load the wrong Extensions for the new system (CPU? GPU?). I have no idea how to fix this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Focx,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Inserting the drive from an earlier model MBP will probably not work. The version of the system you have on that HD is designed for earlier hardware so when you put in in your new machine it's going to be recognized. What I'd recommend is re-installing the disk that came with the new machine and of course putting the 2008's disk back in the old machine. Then use Migration Assistant on the new machine and migrate your data from the old machine into the new machine.
This will provide a much more stable system and should work just fine.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • 21" iMac getting white screen and does not boot up

    Hi All!
This is my first time to post here but have been using Mac OS since 2009.
I am having issues with my  Mid 2011 iMac 21". I keep  getting a white screen and it does not boot up.
I am a bit technical so I have done all the necessary steps as below:
    1. Powercycle the system (Shutdown, unplug for 10 seconds and replug) = No go
    2. Reset NVRAM several times = No go
    3. Went to Safe Boot = Vertical white stripes on blue screen appears
    4. Tried booting on Recovery Disk = Vertical white stripes on blue screen appears
I'm thinking my video card is faulty now.
Any help guys? I hope my hard drive is not fried
What's worse, my 3 year extended warranty just expired last June and it's only been 3 months

First i can't send it back becuase it didnt have a warranty i purchased it on ebay. second the guy didnt send the install disks with it as he promised i have tried to follow up with him with no luck so hes been reported to ebay. and due to current buisiness expenses cant afford the new software. is there anything else i can do to at least boot the thing so i can figure out whats wrong with it. and has anybody experienced this before and if so how was the issue resolved. soooo frustrated as buisiness is at a stand still till this machine works. p.s.it has osx leopard latest version.

  • Mac does not boot past white loading screen and disk cannot be repaired?

So when I turn on my Macbook Pro and it does not boot past a white screen with the Apple logo, loading wheel and progress bar. When the progress bar completes, the Macbook shuts down and when I open it again the cycle is repeated. I have opened it in Safe mode and it still showed the same thing. So I opened it in Recovery Mode and had Disk Utility verify and repair Macintosh HD. As it turns out, Disk Utility said Macintosh HD is beyond repair and I need to back up my files and reformat the whole Mac. Unfortunately, I have never used Time Machine since I started using the Mac and I obviously cannot use it now since startup does not even get past the white screen.
How do I reformat the Mac when it does not even go beyond the white screen during startup? My Mac did not come with any recovery or installation disks. Are my unbacked up files gone for good?
    Thanks.

Since you are able to get into Recovery Mode (Command+R), you can erase/format your Mac via Disk Utility.
Your files/data might be OK. One way to get your data off since you have no back up would be to have another Mac and connect the two via a Thunderbolt cable or even an ethernet cable (I think), then restart your 'bad' Mac into Target Mode by restarting and pressing the T key. Then go onto the 'good' Mac and see if you can copy the data files you want over to it.
