Clicking sound from hard drive?

Does this mean my hard drive is failing?

Does it sound like any of these?

You could also try running SMART Utility:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/smartutility.html
It seems to be a little more critical than Disk Utility, and may detect impending hard drive failure sooner. You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
Good luck!

  • Clicking sound from hard drive - Satellite U940-100

    Hi people,
I bought a new laptop just 5 days back and I am hearing a clicking sound a few seconds apart. Here's what it sounds like: [https://soundcloud.com/user506186265/toshiba-u940-clicking-sound]
Can anyone help me diagnose the sound, what is it and why is it happening?
This happens every hour or so and is disturbing in a quiet environment. Since I plan to keep the laptop for more than a few years I fear the hard drive will fail very soon. If I cannot resolve this suitably before Nov 20, 2013 I plan to return the laptop to where I bought it.
    Thanks for your help!

This clicking noise comes definitely from the HDD and this sound is produced by reading heads. On some models it is pretty quiet but on some models you can hear it clearly.
In front of me I have U940-103 model and I don't hear such clicking noise, just normal HDD noise and it is not so disturbing for me.
As far as I know you cannot control it somehow. Maybe you can disable some settings like automatic update, back-up or HDD scan to avoid such activity.

  • Clicking noises from hard drive

I have just bought an new mac mini and the hard drive is making random soft clicking noises.  Should this concern me?

Check (Verify) the disc with utility disc.
If you have doubts let an Apple Store check it and remember you can replace it without questions before 14 days after purchase.

  • Bad sound from hard-drive music?

The music stored in iTunes on my mac mini does not reproduce with good fidelity.  E.g., If I import a commercial CD to iTunes, using wav, output is substantially inferior to the source CD -- to the point that it's unlistenable on a decent stereo system.

  • Strange clicking noise from hard drive

My drive just started making this noise in my MBP today. Never heard this before. My drive has always been very quiet. Now ever couple to few seconds I'm hearing this click-like noise. No performance issues yet but I work on computers for a living and noises like this are not good. I'm almost certain my drive needs to be replaced and I don't want to wait until it fails. That is not an option.
Anybody have this problem and have their drive replaced to fix the problem?
BTW, mine is also the Fujitsu 120 GB drive.

Sounds like an issue i had with 2 other drives in my old comp.
Bad blocks/sectors turned out to be the problem then.
Fix: backup all your data, boot up from the OSX dvd and open Disc Utility.
    - Select the "Erase" tab and click the "security options" button below.
    - Select the 2nd option "zero out data" then go ahead and erase.
This will mark all bad blocks on your drive and tells the OS not to use those sections of your drive. Once finished, if this turned out to be the problem, the drive won't make those noises anymore.
Some people say once a drive failed due to bad blocks it becomes less reliable, some say this is not the case... I leave it up to you if you still trust this HD after (if) this has been fixed.
Before doing this i suggest running maintenance apps like DiskWarrior and TechTook Pro to see if other problems might be the cause.
Btw, the zero data procedure takes quite some time with large drives, you might want to go grab some lunch and a movie while you do this

  • Start up issue with clicks from hard drive

My Macbook Pro 17" with Maveric does not load beyond grey apple logo during start up and has intermittent clicks sounding from hard drive. I've tried the following to resolve:
    1. Removed and reinstalled the RAM modules followed by clearing the PRAM on restart... ineffective.
    2. Restarted holding the option key. This showed my 1 year old hard drive was still available. However, selecting it resulted in the same failure at the grey apple logo.
    3. My previous Snow Leopard Recovery disc also ineffective. The eject button does no eject the disc either.
    4. Target disk mode also fails.
    5. Remote Recovery start up (command R) hangs on spinning wheel.
    Please advise.

You may have to resort to using something such as DiskWarrior or Data Rescue 3 to try an repair the drive to the point where you can recover some of your files.
I assume that you have no backups?

  • Clicking sound from speakers!

I have problem with sound but this is strange one and i can't find solution anywhere... I am pretty good with computers and i usualy find solutions on internet when i have problem but this is something i can't solve by myself... My laptop is HP 355 G2 and i have Windows 10 installed on it but the same problem was on Windows 8.1 too... So after clean installation of Win10 the sound was good and worked normaly for 2-3 days and now i only hear a clicking sound from speakers when audio is playing but the strange thing is that when i pick up laptop from the table the sound start to work for few seconds and then the clicking sound comes back again, so i suspect that this has something to do with accelerometer which is built  in laptop for hard disc parking in case of drop or something like that... I tryed to uninstal/disable driver for accelerometer but windows install it again emidiatly after reboot, i tryed clean install few times and problem apears again and again... I just don't know anymore what to try to do in order to solve this so if anyone know anything about this please help... And i forgot to say that headphone jack work normaly and when i plug the headphones or external speakers in headphones jack the sound works but the clicking sound still comes out from built  in speakers... Thanks in advance and sorry for my English, it is not my native language and there is no support forums on my native language witch is Serbian...

I want to Connect my Mac Mini as a Slave to a Mac pro Server while at the same time using the Mac mini's thunderbolt ports peripherals ( ie monitor, Sound Card, Hard drives) Creating a poor man's new mac Pro. Can this be Done?

Well, I really would love the new unreleased mac pro however , I'm not sure of the expected cost , Everyone speculates from $3,000 to $8,000, in which I may have to wait a while to purchase.
To the point .... I want fully functional thunderbolt ports to be on the current mac pro's .... wonder if anyone had workarounds yet?...  or could I chain the the current mac pro to a mac mini to make that happen?

  • Recovery from hard drive

I was instructed to reset my notebook to repair fingerprint device.
Thought I had backup of data on external hard drive, but not.
Computer illiterate, but wanted to know if it is possible to recover data from hard drive?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please check professional services in your area, normally they charge few hundred dollars depending on recovery rates but never get 100%. There are few tools such as:
        http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-formatted-partition.htm
You may want to try yourself.
    Good luck.

  • HELP moving photo's from hard drive with aperture to hard drive with iphoto

I was trying to move the photo's from hard drive a with aperture to hard drive b and start using iphoto but I have had no luck. In aperture when I select relocate masters a error comes up and say's: unavailable master images cannot be relocated. Either offline or not found. I originally had the masters on a external hard drive, when I got divorced my ex took the external drive for her mac. I am able to view the photos but I don't know how to move them. Thanks

I think you're missing the point - it's a question of where the images are, and it sounds a lot like the images are on the hard disk you used to own.
Managed = you keep the images in the Aperture library
Referenced = the images stay where they are on the hard disk and they're indexed in the library.

delete windows warnings, error messages from hard drive

    Hello @NeoTaino,
I have read your post on how your desktop computer is displaying a "delete Windows warning, error messages from hard drive". Did you install any hardware or software recently? What does the full error message state as it appears on the screen? I would be happy to help you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number. In addition, it will also help if you indicate which operating system you are using; and whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The more information you can provide, the better!

  • Weird clicking sound from PB

This is not my week. Just replaced the harddrive on my PB due to a crashed drive. Before I changed the drive, I had this clicking noice, actually sounds like its coming from the speakers. But I do not think so, as no matter what I do with the volume it remains the same. Well, I did not really pay any attention to it as I assumed it was the faulty drive that caused it. Now when I changed the drive, ran a hardware test and all is ok and the PB is spinning on I realize the clicking noise is not gone. It seems to be coming from the right top side of the computer. Its sporadic, but, it never starts from the beginning when you fire the computer up. Seems like the computer needs to get warm first. Could it be the fan? How would I go about finding the source of this clicking sound, and is there a way to see if you have a faulty fan? Hope someone could point me in the right direction as I do not know where to go from here.
    Thanks in advance
    Fridge

I just plugged in a pair of earphones, and the clicking stopped. So I guess it is the speakers after all then. Is there anything I can do to make it stop? The speakers are in good condition and are not cracked or damaged by any means. Just this clicking sound from the speakers.

  • DV7-6185us wont boot from hard drive.

I recently installed a new hard drive after the one it came with completely crashed. After installation of new hard drives, I inserted and installed all of the recovery disks needed for the new hard drive. Upon completetion it said it needed a restart and after restart I get a message saying I need a OS for the hard drive for boot up.
I went into my bios to make sure the hard drive was first in boot order which it is but when trying to pick where to put from on the bios screen it only give me the cd option. I ran a full diagnostic of the hard drive and everything checks out. I made sure to unplus the hard drive and tried a different slot and still get the same thing. Installation when fine but still won't boot from hard drive.
Is there something that i'm missing? The hard drive is fine. So what could it be?

    Hi,
Assuming this is just a problem with the recovery media, here's an alternative option you could try.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your notebook - this is listed as Windows 7 Home Premium ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source - Digital River.
    Windows 7 Images.
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Any additional drivers and software you may need can be found Here.
