Clicking the trackpad at the hinge?

Hi there. I've had my MacBook pro for a week, and I assumed the trackpad was one big button. After doing some research, I've discovered the top 1/3 or so is the hinge so it can be difficult to click there. I only did it once or twice yesterday, but I clicked down rather forcefully so that the trackpad recognised my click.
I'm wondering whether pushing down forcefully on the hinge could damage or weaken the hinge in anyway?

I believe the trackpad is glass, so you could snap it if you push too hard.  Besides, you don't want to be doing that on an everyday basis, for usability reasons if nothing else.
What I do is click with my thumb near the bottom as if there were a separate button.  the trackpad seems to be smart enough not to recognize that as a multi-touch gesture...  Although you do have to be careful not to keep your thumb resting on the "button" at all times, or you'll start seeing all kinds of weird zooming as the system interprets that as a pinch.
