% Client Count vs SNR

What does this metric in WCS tell us, exactly?  I could not find an explenation in any of the guides.
This is found on the Radio Details - On Demand Statistics page of each WAP.

I found this to be a good explanation of SNR Cutoff recommendations which this graph seems to relate to.  Basically it tells you for the radio
what SNR the clients are reporting for that AP radio.  This gives you an idea of the percentage of clients that are hearing it at a good level versus a bad level.

You may want to ask specific questions regarding power and design in a forum more related to that since I am answering this from the WCS side.

  • Prime 2.1 - Client count report based on ssid

    Dear All,
Is it possible to extract the reports of client count per ap based on ssid..?
Like, AP Name (eg., 2ndFloorAP) --> SSID (Test)--> Client count for past 1day, 1 week, 1 month etc.
As of now i could see overall client count of an ap from prime not based on SSID (under device work center --> unified ap --> client over time --> client count on ap / client traffic on ap)

    Hi Prasan,
Revisiting this issue, if you have your APs assigned to specific campus/building for your company, you can drill down to the specific AP and SSID that you want for that client count. The options that I used to run a report for one AP for one location that we have is as follows:
report title: <enter applicable name for report>
report by: AP by floor area
report criteria: choose edit and search for the location/building/campus and then the specific AP that you want from those fields. Then choose select.
Once back at the report screen you can set the next options:
connection protocol: select from drop down what you want if it is all clients, all wireless, etc.
The next drop down should allow you to select the specific SSID to what you want based upon the individual AP.  Followed by the report time afterward.  This report will output as a line graph showing the total number of clients based upon your search criteria and time frame.  If you want to research client counts and see their mac address and IP ranges then you are limited to only seeing the current associated clients from the operation > work center flow while viewing the specific AP.  Hope that helps.

  • Client Count vs. Performance

    Hello everyone.
I'd like to know your experience regarding how client count affects performance.
What I have seen in a university network, with a very high client densiity, using 3500 APs, is that around 55 clients ping reply time gets over 200 ms; around 60 users there's packet loss; then, as CC increases, somewhere between 60 - 70 the service gets totally lost. Off course, this depends on bandwidth consumption per user, interference, etc.
Also, I'd like to know what we could expect from 802.11ac regarding this topic. Is there any information on tests, or some estimation already published?
Thanks. And sorry if my enghlish is not good enough.

    Julio,
    Welcome to CSC.
I agree with Scotts statement. Although 802.11ac will allow clients transmissions to trigger at a faster PHY, it is still half duplex. Also, 802.11ac will need to be backward compatible to 802.11g and so on. Unless you have a full 802.1ac environment, your performance will suffer from backward compatibly support.

AP-EDHB-018 have 160 assoicated client count reported.  Really mean there were 160 wireless client assoicated at a moment or there were a totally 160 connected at that day?
    Any idea?
    Dick

    Hi Kayle,
Thanks for the response.  I think you are talking about this in the above.
Reports > Report Launch Pad > Client > Client Count > Client Count Report Details
    then
AP by Floor Area  and select "All Campus", "All Building", "All Floor"
By doing this I get 700+ APs daily client count in graphical (pdf) view and need to go through manually each graph to identify the top 50, top 100 in a given day.
Is it possible to only filter the top 50, 100 APs ?
I would like see my daily report gives something similar to the below
    AP Name    Max Client Count
    AP01               96
    AP02               83
    AP50               20
Would it possible to get something like this from WCS reports ?
    Thanks

  • WCS Client Count Report without Map

I have a large campus with a large number of odd shaped buildings for which we do not have accurate floorplans and we need to run historical reports for the client count per AP however as far as I can see this is not possible unless I create maps and floorplans of the site.
Is there any way to get the client count per AP on a historical basis without the need to create maps and floorplans of the whole site.

It's been a while since using WCS, but I've always used maps. I would just suggest you add a fake map even if it's a box and place the AP's on the appropriate floor if possible. An old map is better than no map to be honest. I have had to take the emergency floor plans (old as heck) and copy that or take a picture on my phone and use that on WCS.

  • Cisco LWAP client count concentration

    Hello
I have an environment of Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller and 1142N Access Points. I have a problem with the ratio of concentration of clients connecting to Access points in floors.
Recently I have been turning off 802.11a  on the access points and I am seeing increase in client count in a few of acces points.
    Here is the snapshot..
What is the maximum client count supported by these access points and how do i ensure they are distributed evenly on access points?
    thanks

Can you elaborate on your intentions again?
You are saying that you are shutting off A radios (5Ghz) and expecting to improve the performance of 2.4Ghz?
Generally speaking, the more you move off of 2.4Ghz toward 5Ghz, the better your 2.4Ghz performance will be (less is more).  If you have any dual-band clients, most people would be looking to get those clients onto the 5Ghz (A) Radio which is where the Band Select feature comes in to play....
I guess I'm just not following the logic of disabling 5Ghz radios....
If you're trying to improve performance, I'd chose Band Select over Load-Balancing,  in an attempt to move clients over to 5Ghz.  If your clients are only b/g/n (2.4Ghz) then thats a non issue, and load-balancing would distribute clients across the APs but it comes with an expense of potentially slower roams...

  • RSSI, channel utilization, clients counts on APs

    Hello Guy,
    I have around 100 APs
some showing 100% channel utilization with only 2 or 3 Clients connected to it. why ?
Some APs showing 38 clients connected but channel utilization is 24 %. why ?
    Some APs shows 0 value.
Can any one clerify RSSI, channel utilization, clients counts on APs
    thanks

Oh that .. If you look at these aps they dont have clients. That 0 shows the worse clients that the aps hears. No clients .. means no clients to have a signal .. so its zero ..
    Make sense?

  • Wired Client Count - Infrastructure 2.0

    Hi all.
Im getting wired client count on the switche  but im not getting the count on coverage area ect ...ive added the switches to location site. Anyone with the same issue ?
Im getting the total wired / wireless count in general view
I want a view with client count wired / wireless on location basic ( just like the Coverage view )

    Hi Markus,
From my experience PI2.0 has very limited (basically none) custom reporting. The only customising you can do is with existing/preconfigured reports in terms of setting the dates, nr of devices reported on etc etc...
Lets see what the newer versions brings...

  • Server kicks off clients counting each client as two logins

I Have a Mac OSX Server (version 10.3) that has a 20 Client Connection limit. I have 11 client computers all running Mac OSX (also version 10.3). All of the users in these clients are in OpenDirectory and have their home folder on the server. They all also need to access another share on the server all the time. I have Workgroup manager set up to share the required folder and automount it on all clients as /Network/ShareName. All of this works great until I have all 11 clients active at the same time. Apparently each AFP share takes up an individual connection on the server, so nine clients make 18 connections, the server takes up one connection, and the last 2 machines can no longer log in. I have already attempted to change the sharing protocol from AFP to NFS on the secondary share, hopefully circumventing the 20 Client Connection Limit (I didn’t think NFS shares would count toward the total client connection limit, as I thought the total connection limit only counted toward AFP), but as I discovered, the simultaneous client connections govern the whole server, not just AFP. My goal is to make this transparent to the end users who generally know nothing about computers or client/server technology and don’t need to be taught how to use the “Finder -> Go -> Connect To Server” command (and besides, using the Profile tool in Workgroup Manager, this command is disabled for them).
I come from a Linux and Microsoft Windows background and the idea of tracking connections this way does not make sense to me. In Windows a client connection counts for a machine and that machine can use as many resources from the server as they want while still counting as one client connection. And with Linux there is no Client Licensing in this sense. Am I doing something wrong? Is there another solution to map these drives? Coming from my Unix side I thought about just making a link in the users home directories to this share (i.e. /Volumes/Users/<Username>/Share => /Volumes/Share), but when I tried a symbolic link (i.e. ln –s /Volumes/Share /Volumes/Users/<Username>/Share), when it is mapped on the user’s computer it doesn’t work because it looks for the /Volumes/Share on the local computer. And when I tried a hard link (i.e. ln /Volumes/Share /Volumes/Users/<Username>/Share), I got an error message because you can’t link across different volumes. Either of these options would have solved my problem, as would getting each client to only take up one connection to the server even thought they are using two file shares, but I cannot get them to work. Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated!
Unfortunately, my background with this server and network is limited, as I “inherited” it when the regular network admin moved on. As far as I can tell, the server is setup with a big hard drive split in to three volumes, the Boot volume, the User Homes volume and the Reference Material volume (as I called “Share” above).
    \ (Boot)
    |
    |-Volumes
    |-Share
    |-Users
I am sure my linking method would work if everything were on the same volume, but this doesn’t really fix the problem, and I am in no rush to backup, reformat and reinstall this computer. In my opinion this isn’t a proper solution either. I also thought about purchasing more Client Access licenses, but I don’t know if they can be easily added or how that would even work, since the client access license limit is hard coded into the server serial number used when originally setting up the machine. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated as well.

Which version of Mac OS X Server, specifically, are you running?
This article explains that Apple changed (fixed?) the concurrent user count to be based on simultaneous machines, not simultaneous connections in 10.3.3.
Your simplest solution may just be to upgrade the server.
Note also thai the article specifically calls out 'automounted share points'. I don't know if manual mounts count in the same way, but that might be worth looking at.

  • WCS report to get client count history

Hello! I've been poking around the Reports feature of our WCS Controller (version 7.0.164.0) and I'm trying to figure out how to get a history of the number associated clients on a particular AP over a specific date range. Is this possible? Thanks!

  • Setting the Client Count per WLAN and per AP radio

    Hi
We use WLC 5508 with 7.4. We tried to set max allowed clients per AP radio to 30 through GUI. We have APs with 80 clients associeted though.
Has anyone else tried this feature?
When entering config wlan max-associated-clients max-clients wlan-id we got
"WLAN/Guest-Lan/remote-lan is enabled. Please disable to configure max associated clients."
GUI doesn't show that message, should it?  In GUI, Is it necesary to disable WLAN before too?
    Thanks
This is the show wlan output

No, the GUI does some stuff automatically, like disablen/enabling the WLAN when you make the change.
From teh CLI *you* have to do them.

  • Please help me to understand what is the meaning of Acess point Channel utilization?

please help me to understand what is the meaning of Acess point Channel utilization? If i want to mange the capacity of my Office Wi-Fi network what are the factor i need to monitor.

    Hi Ankit,
    Channel Utilization
The 802.11, 802.11b, and 802.11g standards use the same 2.4 GHz band. All must interoperate with each other, which introduces additional overhead reducing channel throughput. Many sites already have products using the Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz band. Additionally, there are many other products that use the same 2.4 GHz frequencies as used by Wi-Fi. Other products include Bluetooth, cordless phones, video game controllers, surveillance cameras, and microwave ovens.
Before the installation of the Cisco Unified Wireless Network, a site can be tested for channel interference and utilization with tools from AirMagnet, Wild Packets, Cognio, and others. The Wireless Control System (WCS) AP On-Demand Statistics Display report provides a spectrum review of the following:
    •Noise by channel
    •Interference by channel
    •Client count versus RSSI
    •Client count versus SNR
    •Channel radar detection versus time

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.1 Client Statistic Report Issues

    Hello Community,
I hope you can help with a couple of issues I am seeing on Prime Infrastructure 2.1, running an evaluation 60 day license.
My PI 2.1 build is currently managing a WLC 5508 running 7.4.121.0, which has been added successfully. No configuration changes were applied to the WLCs, other than SNMP community. No AVC or medianet configuration is applied.
When looking in the 'Operate>Client and Users' dashboard; I can see connected clients and if I select one of them, I can see further details like session, security and client statistics (showing traffic and 802.11 metrics). These are the table views that show current values, however, further down I see graphs but they do not contain any information for RSSI, SNR or traffic sent & received (packets or bytes).
Question: Should I see this information under an evaluation license and if so, what could be stopping it?
Also, when I run the reports 'Report>Report Launch Pad' and select 'Client>Client Traffic' or 'Client>Client Throughput' the resulting report contains 0 bps, when I select 'Report By' AP by Floor Area. I have created a single floor area and placed three access points into it.
Out of interest if I do a report of the same type using 'Report By' All or AP by Controller, I do see traffic graphs for 3 out of 333 access points. Just not the access points that are in my floor area. Also the amount of traffic utilization is tiny (less than a kbps) for a WLC with 800 users.
For a 'Client>Client Count' report using AP by Floor Area, I do see the client numbers connected to the WLC/APs in my configured floor area.
Question: Should I see reports for client traffic and throughput under an evaluation license for floor areas and if so, what could be stopping it?
I have checked the background task and the 'Client Statistics' task is enabled and run time is being updated.
    Kind regards,
    Ian

We have had this "PRX5" problem with Exchange 2013 since the RTM version.  We recently applied CU3, and it did not correct the problem.  We have seen this problem on every Exchange 2013 we manage.  They are all installations where all roles
are installed on the same Windows server, and in our case, they are all Windows virtual machines using Windows 2012 Hyper-V.
We have tried all the "this fixed it for me" solutions regarding DNS, network cards, host file entries and so forth.  None of those "solutions" made any difference whatsoever.  The occurrence of the temporary error PRX5 seems totally random.
About 2 out of 20 incoming mail test by Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer fail with this PRX5 error.
Most people don't ever notice the issue because remote mail servers retry the connection later.  However, telephone voice mail systems that forward voice message files to email, or other such applications such as your scanner, often don't retry and
simply fail.  Our phone system actually disables all further attempts to send voice mail to a particular user if the PRX5 error is returned when the email is sent by the phone system.
Is Microsoft totally oblivious to this problem?
PRX5 is a serious issue that needs an Exchange team resolution, or at least an acknowledgement that the problem actually does exist and has negative consequences for proper mail flow.
